Abstract:China is the largest egg production and consumption country in the world. As the increasing consumption and centralized processing of eggs, a large number of discarded eggshells not only cause serious environmental pollution, but also result in large waste of resources. It is significant to use the eggshell efficiently. The application of eggshells has been widely studied at home and abroad, but how to use eggshell membrane efficiently is still lack of research. In fact, eggshell membrane is the potential resources of protein and peptide which have a very considerable application value. The eggshell membrane with high added value was overviewed. The keratin, the collagen, the bioactive peptides existed in the membrane were introduced and the corresponding extraction methods were emphasized, which aimed to provide a theoretical reference for the eggshell membrane.

Abstract:Eggshell membranes (ESM) contain 90% protein, 3% lipids, 2% sugars, and small amounts of minerals such as calcium and magnesium. Of the 90% of proteins present, 472 proteins species have been identified. ESM provide the initial mineralization platform for eggshell formation, and can be used for to produce adsorbents, cosmetics, and medical products because of their special physical structure and chemical composition. The special physical structure of the eggshell membrane, with disulfide bonds between and within the protein molecules and the cross-linking of lysine-derived and heterochain chains between the eggshell membrane, makes the membrane very difficult to dissolve, with a maximum solubility rate of only 62%. Also, the insolubility of ESM limits its development and use also any related research. Based on the physical structure and chemical composition of the eggshell membrane, this paper reviews the latest research on eggshell membrane separation and membrane protein solubilization to provide a reference for promoting the separation, dissolution, and rational development and use of the avian eggshell membrane.

Abstract:Eggshell membrane is a kind of cheap, abundant resources with great potential utilization value. A variety of active ingredients in it can be used as raw materials for medicine, light industry and other industries. At present, soluble protein, collagen, keratin, sialic acid, hyaluronic acid and antimicrobial protein have been successfully extracted from eggshell membrane and exploited in various fields. This study aimed to separate the eggshell membrane for fully exploiting the potential utilization value of the eggshell, and reduce the amount of waste discharged, which is conducive to protecting the ecological environment on which we depend. In order to reduce energy consumption of eggshell membrane separation, separate eggshell membranes from eggshells by flash evaporation was investigated. The flash separation conditions were optimized considering three independent variables at three different levels by response surface methodology The results showed that the processing parameters of separating eggshell membranes and eggshells with flash evaporation were 1.0 Mpa pressure, 45% moisture content, and 5 mm eggshells' particle size. Under these conditions, the separation rate was 69.16%. Therefore, flash separation can be a promising approach for separating eggshells and eggshell membranes.

From inner to out,the eggshell model included shell membrane,cone layer,column layer,surface crystal layer and cover. And the result showed that eggshell intensity could be relative with the thickness of shell membrane,fibers of shell membrane,spacing of cone layer and cranny of cover.

Abstract:The microstructure and mineral characteristics of eggshell from Ningxia were researched with SEM,XRD and IR.The research showed that eggshell were composed of four layers such as the surface layer of crystal,the palisade layer,the cone layer and the eggshell membrane layer.There were holes and turtle crack in the eggshell.The mineral phase of eggshell is mainly calcite.The diffraction plane of eggshell powder such as(110),(113) and(202) are orientated to outer surface.The result may be useful for multiple utilization of eggshell.

Abstract:The water has been used as the environmental protective separation substance for the eggshell membrane in this study.The eggshell membrane separation efficiency has been improved significantly when get rid of the eggshell powder whose size more than 200 mesh,and the physical and chemical composition of eggshell and its membrane has not changed.Firstly,five factors influencing effect of eggshell membrane seperation have been studied,including the mixing time,mixing speed,solid-liquid ratio,seperation times and static duration,and the optimal separation conditions have been determined using orthogona1 experiment.The result shows that:when used the yield of eggshell as the indicatrix,the optimum eggshell membrane separation conditions are as below:mixing time 20min,liquid ratio of 1∶10,mixing speed 600 r/min,the separation times 4,can get the yield of eggshell up to 94.47%,the membrane residual rate is 0.271 8%,When used the yield of membrane as the indicatrix,the optimum eggshell membrane separation conditions are as below:mixing time 10 min,liquid ratio of 1∶6,mixing speed 400 r/min,the separation times 4,can get the yield of eggshell membrane up to 4.220%,the membrane residual rate is 3.34%.

Abstract:Using crushing, flotation and low concentration acid treatment methods to obtain pure eggshell membrane were studied in the purpose of the maximum separationrate of the egg membrane. Eggshell was crushed with a universal grinder at the water content of 6.5%.The eggshell powder larger than 80 mesh were flatted using with water as the environmental protective separation substance for the eggshell membrane, the maximum yield of eggshell membrane at 90.5% and the rate of calcium residues reached 3.3%.Low concentration of HCI was chosen in order to remove the residual of eggshell from the eggshell membrane. It could be concluded that the optimum decalcified conditions by orthogonal test were as below： the concentration of HCI was 0.4mol/L, liquid ratio was 1：20,the pickling time was 15min.ln these conditions,the maximum of decalcification rate was 94.51%. This method was simple, low cost and high purity of the extracted egg membrane, it could be applied to produce egg membrane in large-scale.

Abstract:Eggshells and eggshell membranes have high-value recycling applications and have been widely used in pharmaceutical, chemical, and food research. The separation of eggshells and eggshell membranes is a prerequisite to efficiently using both. Therefore, the pressure-vacuum experiment equipment was designed. In this study, research on the separation of eggshells and eggshell membranes from waste eggshells using the pressure-vacuum experiment equipment was carried out. The flash evaporation experiment process controlled the experimental factors to obtain a sufficient moisture content between the eggshell and eggshell membrane with vigorous flash evaporation. The effects of experimental factors such as superheat (5-10 degrees C), temperature (50-70 degrees C), initial pressure (0.6-0.8 MPa), pressurization time (0-40 min), and particle size (6-8 mm) on the separation rate were investigated in the pressure-vacuum experiment process. Through single-factor and orthogonal experiments, it was found that the separation rate was most affected by changes in temperature, initial pressure, and particle size, followed by the interaction of temperature and particle size. The experimental results suggested that the optimum separation of eggshell membranes from eggshells was achieved at higher superheat, higher temperature, higher initial pressure, medium pressurization time, and smaller particle size. Through optimization by response surface methodology, the optimal conditions for the separation of eggshells and eggshell membranes using the flash evaporation method were determined as 15 degrees C of superheat, 70 degrees C of temperature, 0.8 MPa of initial pressure, and 6 mm of particle size. Flash evaporation method is an effective and environmentally friendly method, which provides a new solution for the recycling of waste eggshells. Practical ApplicationIn this study, pressure-vacuum experiment equipment was utilized to reuse of waste eggshells, and an innovative and environmentally friendly method of eggshell membrane and eggshell separation was established. The pressure-vacuum experiment equipment has a simple structure and low energy consumption. The results of flash evaporation experiments are instructive for further in-depth studies on the separation of eggshells and eggshell membranes. Furthermore, the separation of eggshells and egg membranes by flash evaporation is of great research value. Most importantly, the separated eggshells and eggshell membrane are available for high-value applications in food, chemical, and biological fields.

Abstract:Chicken eggshells (ESs) consist of 96%–97% calcium carbonate, while about 3%–4% consists of organic substances, mainly in the form of protein‐based membranes and occluded organic matter. Recently, ESs have been studied as a filler in polymer composite materials, which represents an innovative solution to address ES valorization. In this study, thermal and chemical treatments were investigated for membrane removal since the membrane may alter various properties when the ES fillers are added to the composite material. A nanoindentation method was used to measure changes in the ES mechanical properties. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and Fourier‐transform infrared (FT‐IR) spectroscopy were used to characterize the ES membrane removal through chemical treatment. The results showed that even at a heating temperature of 100°C, the ES mechanical properties were negatively affected, while a low concentration of bleach solution (25% bleach solution and 10 min of holding time) was able to remove the membrane without reducing the ES mechanical properties. The chemical treatment method offers a means for ES membrane removal while conserving the quality of the mineral fraction (calcite; CaCO3).

Abstract:The eggshell membrane (ESM), mainly composed of collagen-like proteins, is readily available as a waste product of the egg industry. As a novel biomaterial, ESM is attractive for its applications in the nutraceutical, cosmetic, and pharmaceutical fields. This review provides the main information about the structure and chemical composition of the ESM as well as some approaches for its isolation and solubilization. In addition, the review focuses on the role and performance of bioactive ESM-derived products in various applications, while a detailed literature survey is provided. The evaluation of the safety of ESM is also summarized. Finally, new perspectives regarding the potential of ESM as a novel biomaterial in various engineering fields are discussed. This review provides promising future directions for comprehensive application of ESM.

Abstract:To explore the relationships between the quality and elemental composition,ultra-microstructure of eggshell,sixty-five eggs collected at the same day were used for quality determination.The quality of the eggshell was evaluated by routine methods.The element composition of eggshell was analyzed by X-ray energy dispersive spectroscopy(EDS).The ultra-microstructure of eggshell was observed by environmental scanning electron microscope(SEM).The results showed that the difference of the relative content of elements in eggshells with different strength was not significant.The quality of eggshell was decided by the ultra-microstructure of eggshell,while the effective thickness of mastoid layer and mastoid gap had an important influence on the eggshell strength.The effective thickness of mastoid layer and mastoid gap of high intensity treatment were lower than middle intensity and low intensity treatments by 23.01%(P0.01) and 14.94%(P0.05),73.43%(P0.01) and 25.06%(P0.05) respectively.It was concluded that the density of eggshell ultra-microstructure and the effective thickness of mastoid layer directly influenced the eggshell quality.The relationship between elemental composition and eggshell quality was not significant.

Abstract:The preparation, characterization and biocompatibility of soluble eggshell membrane (SEP) are reported. The dissolution process, which is the key step of the preparation of SEP, has been followed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to observe the changes of the surfaces and thickness of the eggshell membrane (ESM). The composition of SEP has been investigated by amino acid analysis and elemental analysis. Based on the fact that SEP losses significantly cystine, and that SEP has a higher content of sulfur, an assumption involving combination with 3-mercaptopropionic acid (the reagent used for reductive cleavage of disulfide bonds) following the cleavage of the original disulfide bonds has been proposed, which explains the solubility of SEP. The thermal and surface properties have been studied by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and contact angle measurement. The biocompatibility of SEP, as demonstrated by cell culture of NIH3T3, is comparable to collagen type I and superior to raw ESM either inside or outside surface.
