Abstract:Concerns over possible toxicities of conventional metal-containing quantum dots have inspired growing research interests in colloidal silicon nanocrystals (SiNCs), or silicon quantum dots (SiQDs). This is related to their potential applications in a number of fields such as solar cells, optoelectronic devices and fluorescent bio-labelling agents. The past decade has seen significant progress in the understanding of fundamental physics and surface properties of silicon nanocrystals. Such understanding is based on the advances in the preparation and characterization of surface passivated colloidal silicon nanocrystals. In this critical review, we summarize recent advances in the methods of preparing high quality silicon nanocrystals and strategies for forming self-assembled monolayers (SAMs), with a focus on their bioapplications. We highlight some of the major challenges that remain, as well as lessons learnt when working with silicon nanocrystals (239 references).

Abstract:Silica nanoparticles (SiNPs) are composed of silicon dioxide, the most abundant compound on Earth, and are used widely in many applications including the food industry, synthetic processes, medical diagnosis, and drug delivery due to their controllable particle size, large surface area, and great biocompatibility. Building on basic synthetic methods, convenient and economical strategies have been developed for the synthesis of SiNPs. Numerous studies have assessed the biomedical applications of SiNPs, including the surface and structural modification of SiNPs to target various cancers and diagnose diseases. However, studies on the in vitro and in vivo toxicity of SiNPs remain in the exploratory stage, and the toxicity mechanisms of SiNPs are poorly understood. This review covers recent studies on the biomedical applications of SiNPs, including their uses in drug delivery systems to diagnose and treat various diseases in the human body. SiNP toxicity is discussed in terms of the different systems of the human body and the individual organs in those systems. This comprehensive review includes both fundamental discoveries and exploratory progress in SiNP research that may lead to practical developments in the future.

Abstract:Nano silicon dioxide (SiO2) particles are a kind of functional inorganic materials, and the research on nano materials is one of hot spots.Nano materials have been widely applied in the fields of catalyst carrier, polymer composite materials and environmental governance. In this paper, the preparation methods of nano silicon dioxide were reviewed, including precipitation method, reverse microemulsion method and sol-gel method. And the structure and preparation conditions of nano silicon dioxide were discussed as well as its application in the environmental field.

Abstract:Inorganic nanoparticles have received great interests due to their attractive electronic, optical, and thermal properties as well as catalytic properties and potential applications in the fields of physics, chemistry, biology, medicine, and material science and their different interdisciplinary fields. Great deals of synthetic methods Such as aqueous- and organic-phase approaches have been reported to synthesize high-quality inorganic nanoparticles, but the stability of colloid nanoparticles obtained is still a great problem. In addition, most of these methods for preparing nanoparticles were based oil the use of organic ligand, surfactant or polymeric templates. However, the addition of organic ligand, surfactant or polymeric templates may introduce contamination in the final product due to the formation of undesired byproduct ill the reaction medium, Which makes them unsuitable for further application, especially in biology. On the other hand, fluorohores such as dyes has been employed as optical probe by many groups for carrying out bioassay such as detecting target DNA, protein, etc. However, because one DNA or other probes call only be labeled with one or a few fluorophores, the fluorescence signal is too weak to be detected when the target concentration is low. Furthermore, most organic dyes suffer serious photobleaching, often resulting in irreproducible signals for ultratrace bioanalysis. Silica coating of inorganic nanomaterial or fluorohores appears as all attractive alternative for providing enhanced colloidal or photostable stability and suitable functional groups for bioconjugation. Hybrid nanoparticles based oil silica has been pursued Vigorously ill the last few years and ill this review chapter we provide a perspective oil the present status of the subject. Described approaches include encapsulating inorganic nanomaterials using SiO2 Sphere, fluorophore-doped silica nanoparticles, Constructing muti-functional hybrid materials using SiO2 sphere as Supporting material, and some important applications of hybrid nanoparticle based oil silica. Finally, summary and outlook of these hybrid nanoparticles are also presented.

Abstract:Nanoparticles have attracted much attention and already been extensively applied in many areas in the last decade. Due to nano-scaled sizes, nanoparticles exhibit various outstanding properties that differ from those of bulk materials, such as unique performances in fields of chemistry, photology, electricity, magnetism and so on. This review summerizes their classifications based on the different compositions and structures, i. e. organic nanoparticles, inorganic nanoparticles and organic/inorganic hybrid nanoparticles. The review focuses on the synthetic methods of different types of nanoparticles, particularly ones could be applied in biology. In addition, the unique physical and chemical features of the classified nanoparticles, which would be helpful for their biological applications, are clarified respectively. Because of their excellent properties such as large superficial area, high surface energy, environmental sensitivity and biocompatibility, nanoparticles have been widely used in various fields such as photoelectricity, chemistry, biotechnology and so on. We highlight the biological applications of the nanoparticles and introduce some specific examples of stimuli responsive sensors, bio-specific labeling, gene/drug deliveries and so on. At last we propose the prospects of the nanoparticles.

Abstract:Advanced bioanalysis, including accurate quantitation, has driven the need to understand biology and medicine at the molecular level. Bioconjugated silica nanoparticles have the potential to address this emerging challenge. Particularly intriguing diagnostic and therapeutic applications in cancer and infectious disease as well as uses in gene and drug delivery, have also been found for silica nanoparticles. In this review, we describe the synthesis, bioconjugation, and applications of silica nanoparticles in different bioanalysis formats, such as selective tagging, barcoding, and separation of a wide range of biomedically important targets. Overall, we envisage that further development of these nanoparticles will provide a variety of advanced tools for molecular biology, genomics, proteomics and medicine.

Abstract:The advanced high-quality synthesis of dense and porous silica-coated nanostructures is enjoying ever-increasing research interests for their important properties and diverse applications, especially for catalytic, controlled release, colorimetric diagnostics, photothermal therapy, surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) detection, and so forth. In this timely Focus Review, we summarize the up-to-date synthesis strategies, improved properties, and emerging applications of silica-coated metal nanoparticles. In particular, the large scale synthesis of silica-coated metal nanoparticles and the recent development of hollowed-out silica-coated metal nanoparticles by silica dissolution are emphasized for new and practical applications.

Abstract:Recent research has looked to develop innovative and powerful novel biofunctionalized nanometer-sized silica particles, controlling and tailoring their properties in a very predictable manner to meet the needs of specific applications. The silica shells of these particles facilitate a wide variety of surface reactions and allow conjugation with biomolecules like proteins and DNA. There exist a multitude of possible applications of fabricated nanoparticles in biotechnology and medicine. In particular, they have proved to be highly useful for biosensing, assay labelling, bioimaging, and in research on a variety of molecular tags in cellular and molecular biology. Techniques commonly rely on the use of silica-coated semiconductor quantum dots, organic dyes, magnetic particles, and Raman active particles. Inorganic-biological hybrid particles combine the properties of both materials, i.e., the spectroscopic characteristics of the entrapped nanocrystal, and the biomolecular function of the conjugated entity. Rather than being exhaustive, this review focuses on selected examples to illustrate novel concepts and promising applications. Approaches described include the encoding of silica nanoparticles with different groups, and conjugation with various biological entities. Further, promising applications in bioanalysis are considered and discussed.

Abstract:Monodisperse mesoporous silica nanoparticles are of promising applications in many current and emerging areas of technology because of their nature advantages. This review is devoted to the progress made in the last decade in synthesis and biomedical application of monodisperse mesoporous silica nanoparticles. We present a comprehensive overview of synthetic strategies for monodisperse mesoporous silica nanoparticles. These strategies are broadly categorized into three groups, such as dilute solution method, microemulsion method, and introduction of template/different additives to reaction system. Monodisperse mesoporous silica nanoparticles with good dispersion, different morphology and tuning pore sizes are successfully synthesized by means of the above-mentioned methods. Applications of monodisperse mesoporous silica nanoparticles in drug and large biomolecule delivery and controlled release, separation of the large biomolecule, biomarker and biomedical diagnosis are mostly described.

Abstract:Silica nanoparticles, amino-terminated silica nanoparticles and fluorescent silica nanoparticles were prepared respectively via the formation of hydrolysis of tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) with the synchronous modification of amino functional group in water-in-oil microemulsion. The diameter of the prepared nanoparticles was tested to be 40 nm through TEM analysis, and Zeta potential of the silica nanoparticles surface modified was tested to be 16 mV with zeta potentioneter under the condition of neutral pH value. Agarose gel electrophoresis photos indicate that the amino-terminated silica nanoparticles can bind effectively with DNA molecule, and moreover, nanoparticles-DNA complexes formed could resist digestion of DNase in the serum. The tests of cell by microscopy show that the most of nanoparticles can enter the cells when fluorescence nanoparticles are cultured with live HT1080 cells. Toxicity experiments in vitro indicate that there is no significant influence silica nanoparticles when they are cultured with normal cells. Finally, transfection tests of silica nanoparticles in the cultured cells reveal that plasmid DNA (pEGFP-N1_green fluorescence protein) can obtain expression with certain efficiency when the complexes formed with silica nanoparticles modified and DNA (pEGFP-N1) are cultured with Hela cells.

Abstract:Fine particulate matter(PM2.5) has become a worldwide air pollution concern. Natural and artificial ultrafine silica particles exist widely in atmospheric particulate matters. The increasing application and production of nano-silica have inevitably resulted in its releasing into the environment. The special physicochemical properties make its toxicological effects upon organisms very different from conventional particulate matters. In the present paper, both domestic and international studies on the toxic effects of nano-silica were reviewed, including membrane toxicity, oxidative damage and inflammation, the impacts on cell apoptosis and the changes of cell cycle, DNA damage, and gene expressions. The paper pointed out that the cytotoxicity was influenced by many factors such as particle size and dosage. The mechanism of toxicology of nano-silica should be further studied.

Abstract:Silica-nanobead-based sensing systems have been developed and employed in various analytical and bioanalytical applications due to their attractive features, such as ideal modifiable surface, effective combining capacity with other nanomaterials, and good biocompatibility. The typical construction of silica-nanobead-based sensors includes the preparation of silica nanobeads and is followed by surfacechemistry modifications. In this review, we first cover the synthesis methods of different kinds of silica nanobeads in detail. We discuss the critical functional strategies for silica-nanobead-based sensing systems. This article also reviews silica-nanobead-based sensing and biosensing technologies, and highlights recent advances of representative examples with different sensing concepts. Finally, we conclude with a perspective on the opportunities and the challenges facing silica-nanobead-based sensors for further developments in this research field. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:Abstract Compared with traditional materials, the application of nanomaterials in biomedical fields will bring many excellent performances. This review summarizes some new developments and applications of nanoparticles in recent years from the perspective of biology and medicine, including magnetic resonance imaging, treatment for Alzheimer’s disease, diabetes and plant infection disease, oxygen-releasing scaffolds, engineered water nanostructures (EWNS) based sanitizer, drug loading system and cancer treatment. This article summarized and discussed the synthesis methods, characterization, advantages, and applications based on these aspects. Introducing nanoparticles into biomedical fields can provide useful ideas for applying nanoparticles in biology and pharmacy in the future.

Abstract:The application of nanotechnology to biomedical research is expected to have a major impact leading to the development of new types of diagnostic and therapeutic tools. One focus in nanobiotechnology is to develop safe and efficient drug/gene delivery vehicles. Research into the rational delivery and targeting of pharmaceutical, therapeutic and diagnostic agents is at the forefront of projects in nanomedicine. Silica, as a major and natural component of sand and glass, is a versatile material due to the variety of available chemical and physical modifications that are available, and recently have been widely applied in nanobiotechnology as drug/gene carriers or fluorescent nano-probes. The goal of this brief review is to illustrate selected examples of various functionalized silica nanoparticles as drug/gene delivery systems that have been applied to the arenas of human disease therapy or detection (molecular and cellular imaging).

Abstract:Multimodal imaging, as an important approach to circumvent the limitations of single imaging modality, has attracted extensive attention in recent years. With the rapid development of nanotechnology and the ongoing efforts to improve their targeting capability and endow multiple imaging ability, nanoprobes are expected to play crucial roles in multimodal imaging through integrating different imaging moieties or molecules into a single nanoparticle, where silica has been used intensively as a carrier or a medium for the construction of the nanoprobes due to its preferable characteristics including good biocompatibility, long blood circulation time, and ease of modification. Based on the types of the silica used for the fabrication of nanoprobes, solid silica-based and mesoporous silica-based nanoparticles were developed for multimodal imaging. Herein, the newly developed silica-based nanoparticles as multimodal imaging agents for disease diagnosis and therapy in the last 5 years were summarized, along with their fabrication process, specific applications, and especially the role of the silica.
