Abstract:Purpose The past 40 years of reform and opening up have seen the role of core competence receive unprecedented attention because of the impact of the new normal economy as well as the pressure of transformation and upgrading. Few Chinese enterprises have effectively constructed core competence, and there is also a lack of strategic perspective and contextual embedding of its construction process in theory. This study aims to analyse the unique contextual characteristics of China in the transitional period and the impact on the core competence construction of Chinese enterprises and proposes its construction mechanism for Chinese enterprises. Design/methodology/approach Through theoretical deduction and speculation, this paper analyses the process of concept formation, clarifies the concept, analyses its connotations and structure and emphasises its relativity. Based on a review of the theoretical research on the core competence construction process and an analysis of dual contextual impact, this paper puts forward a mechanism for core competence construction. Findings The results reveal that four specific characteristics of entrepreneurs in balancing and coping with the dual nature of external context constitute the key driving force for a Chinese enterprises’ core competence construction; under the influence of this driving force, the core competence construction mechanism includes process mode, knowledge source, management mode and key success factors. Originality/value Approaching it from a Chinese context, this study deepens the concept of core competence; enriches and develops the research related to the core strategic research proposition of its construction; and provides positive significance for Chinese enterprises to effectively build, develop and strengthen core competence and enhance their international competitiveness.

Abstract:In strategic management area of business enterprise, source of competitive advantage is always the focus that scholars debated and cared. The text firstly divided dominant competitive advantage theories into three streams according to different analytic level: stream of exogenous theory (industry-level), stream of endogenous theory (firm-level) and stream of network theory (network-level), and elaborated and analyzed main standpoint of the three streams; Based on this, the text put forwards an integrated frame of three theoretical streams: competitive advantage view based on strategic network capability. The frame brought into three levels' factors of competitive advantage (firm, industry and network) and offered us a new angle for obtaining competitive advantage; lastly, the text put forward some measures of constructing competitive advantage for firms.

Abstract:The study of College Students' Core Competency Model(CSCCM) based on the future career development is a preliminary exploration on the necessary competencies that a college student should develop.Grounded on literature analysis and interviews with 6 experts,the College Students' Core Competency(behavior) Dictionary was constructed.It included 21 core competencies,with their definitions and levels of behavioral indicators.After BEI and coding of two groups(outstanding graduates and ordinary graduates,10 for each group),the College Students' Core Competency Model(CSCCM) was developed.It consisted of 8 dimensions: down-to-earth,development by learning,responsibility,self-confidence,interpersonal relationship,oral expression,perseverance and need for achievement.

Abstract:The structure of core competencies is the key to constructing the "Chinese Standards" of engineering education and cultivating quality emerging engineering talent. This article synthesized the research results of existing theoretical analyses and educational practices. In total, 11 core competencies of emerging engineering talent were extracted via a literature review and the Delphi method, of which the hierarchical relationships and correlation paths between the core competencies of emerging engineering talent were determined via the use of Interpretive Structural Modeling (ISM) and Matrice d' Impacts Croisés Multiplication Appliqués à un Classement (MICMAC), where corresponding improvement strategies were eventually proposed. It was found that professional knowledge and engineering thinking, as independent factors, have the greatest impact on the core competencies of emerging engineering talent. Taking the lead in cultivating the core competencies, which are dependence factors, including entrepreneurial ability, lifelong learning ability, professional ethics, patriotism and collectivism, and intercultural competence, is more conducive to improving the quality of emerging engineering talent, enabling the cultivation of high-quality composite talent with strong engineering practical abilities, innovation abilities, and international competitiveness. The hierarchical relationships and correlation paths determined in this study provide theoretical support for developing scientific objectives for emerging engineering talent training, carrying out educational practice, and reducing the difficulty in application practices. The results of this research support the viewpoint that "professional foundation and practical ability" should be stressed. Limited by the disciplinary backgrounds of the authors, the compatibility between the core competencies' framework of emerging engineering talent proposed in this article based on the construction industry and other industries still needs to be further explored.

Abstract:What's the current state of core competence of China's enterprises? Is it the source of sustainable competitive advantage? These are key issues that both the academics and practitioners pay attention to. Based on the definition of core competence, a measurement system of core competence is provided. Then a questionnaire survey was organized. Forty one qualified responded questionnaires from 33 firms are received. The statistic analysis based these questionnaire shows that core competence is the source of sustainable advantages. Profitability and growth of a firm depend on its core competence. China's enterprises have experienced the strategic core competence and organizational core competence based competition. In the next stage, they would compete based on technological core competence.

Abstract:Core competencies are the crown jewels of a company and, therefore, should be carefully nurtured and developed. Companies can determine their future business directions based on the strengths of competencies. However, because generalized terms such as resource, asset, capability, and competence are not clearly explained in connection with competence theory, these posing difficulties in understanding many contemporary management concepts. In this paper, we provide a summary of the recent management theories by comparing their salient features. We then propose a linking mechanism between assets, resources, capabilities, competencies, and core competencies. We provide a methodology to identify core competencies by isolating unique and flexible capabilities of the firm. We use this framework to identify the core competencies of a U.K. manufacturing company. The results of our analyses is to help the company to make more informed strategic management decision regarding capability development, outsourcing, focusing, or diversification, with regards to new products, services, or markets. The framework is generic in nature and is applicable to benchmark a manufacturing, public, or service sector organization.

Abstract:There is much research discussing the issues of core competence, core capability, business performance and corporate growth. But the lack of studies exploring their causality is an important research gap. In this research, we develop a framework of a core capabilities operation system, which systematically integrates these critical initiatives, and can be used to develop the extended model of business development. In order to conduct the empirical study, we also design a strategic map of an enterprises' long-term development model. In this model the elements of a fundamental field cultivate the core competences, and further develop the core capabilities. These core competences and capabilities are the drivers of core competitiveness, which force the long-term development and excellent business. Based on this framework, we can develop the structure equation model, and the related questionnaire for the empirical study, in order to determine the critical initiatives and the relationships among these constructs. Based on the analytic results, the causalities among these critical initiatives can be confirmed. We also discover that ‘good organisation culture’ and ‘excellent management team’ are the most important firm’ fundamentals, which support the successful implementation of core competences and core capabilities. Herewith the ‘specialised technologies’, ‘powerful IT system’ and capturing the customers' needs' are the core competences, and ‘product lifetime management’ and ‘total quality management’ are the important capabilities. Core competitiveness is composed of ‘business development strategies’, ‘leader of core products’, and ‘innovative products’, which can result in the firm's excellent business performances.
