Abstract:In this paper, we study the existence of multiple solutions to the $L_{p}$-Minkowski problem. We prove if $p<-n$, then for any integer $N>0$, there exists a smooth positive function f on $\mathbb S^n$ such that the $L_{p}$-Minkowski problem admits at least N different smooth solutions. We also construct nonsmooth, positive function f for which the $L_{p}$-Minkowski problem has infinitely many $C^{1,1}$ solutions.

Abstract:We consider the solutions of refinement equations written in the form [ φ( x ) = ∑_α∈ℤ^sa( α)φ( Mx - α) + g( x ), x ∈ℝ^s ,; ] where the vector of functions ϕ = ( ϕ 1 , ..., ϕ r ) T is unknown, g is a given vector of compactly supported functions on ℝ s , a is a finitely supported sequence of r × r matrices called the refinement mask, and M is an s × s dilation matrix with m = |det M |. Inhomogeneous refinement equations appear in the construction of multiwavelets and the constructions of wavelets on a finite interval. The cascade algorithm with mask a, g , and dilation M generates a sequence ϕ n , n = 1, 2, ..., by the iterative process [ φ _n( x ) = ∑_α∈ℤ^sa( α)φ _n - 1( Mx - α) + g( x ), x ∈ℝ^s ,; ] from a starting vector of function ϕ 0 . We characterize the L p -convergence (0 < p < 1) of the cascade algorithm in terms of the p -norm joint spectral radius of a collection of linear operators associated with the refinement mask. We also obtain a smoothness property of the solutions of the refinement equations associated with the homogeneous refinement equation.

Abstract:We consider the problem of document indexing and representation. Recently, Locality Preserving Indexing (LPI) was proposed for learning a compact document subspace. Different from Latent Semantic Indexing which is optimal in the sense of global Euclidean structure, LPI is optimal in the sense of local manifold structure. However, LPI is extremely sensitive to the number of dimensions. This makes it difficult to estimate the intrinsic dimensionality, while inaccurately estimated dimensionality would drastically degrade its performance. One reason leading to this problem is that LPI is non-orthogonal. Non-orthogonality distorts the metric structure of the document space. In this paper, we propose a new algorithm called Orthogonal LPI. Orthogonal LPI iteratively computes the mutually orthogonal basis functions which respect the local geometrical structure. Moreover, our empirical study shows that OLPI can have more locality preserving power than LPI. We compare the new algorithm to LSI and LPI. Extensive experimental results show that Orthogonal LPI obtains better performance than both LSI and LPI. More crucially, it is insensitive to the number of dimensions, which makes it an efficient data preprocessing method for text clustering, classification, retrieval, etc.

Abstract:We study $p$-adic multiresolution analyses (MRAs). A complete characterisation of test functions generating a MRA (scaling functions) is given. We prove that only 1-periodic test functions may be taken as orthogonal scaling functions and that all such scaling functions generate Haar MRA. We also suggest a method of constructing sets of wavelet functions and prove that any set of wavelet functions generates a $p$-adic wavelet frame.

Abstract:Generalized multiresolution analyses are increasing sequences of subspaces of a Hilbert space $\H$ that fail to be multiresolution analyses in the sense of wavelet theory because the core subspace does not have an orthonormal basis generated by a fixed scaling function. Previous authors have studied a multiplicity function $m$ which, loosely speaking, measures the failure of the GMRA to be an MRA. When the Hilbert space $\H$ is $L^2(\mathbb R^n)$, the possible multiplicity functions have been characterized by Baggett and Merrill. Here we start with a function $m$ satisfying a consistency condition which is known to be necessary, and build a GMRA in an abstract Hilbert space with multiplicity function $m$.

Constructing Multiresolution Analysis via Wavelet Packets on Sobolev Space in Local Fields

Abstract:We define Sobolev spaces $H^{\mathfrak{s}}(K_q)$ over a local field $K_q$ of finite characteristic $p>0$, where $q=p^c$ for a prime $p$ and $c\in \mathbb{N}$. This paper introduces novel fractal functions, such as the Weierstrass type and 3-adic Cantor type, as intriguing examples within these spaces and a few others. Employing prime elements, we develop a Multi-Resolution Analysis (MRA) and examine wavelet expansions, focusing on the orthogonality of both basic and fractal wavelet packets at various scales. We utilize convolution theory to construct Haar wavelet packets and demonstrate the orthogonality of all discussed wavelet packets within $H^{\mathfrak{s}}(K_q)$, enhancing the analytical capabilities of these Sobolev spaces.

Abstract:We discuss how generalized multiresolution analyses (GMRAs), both classical and those defined on abstract Hilbert spaces, can be classified by their multiplicity functions $m$ and matrix-valued filter functions $H$. Given a natural number valued function $m$ and a system of functions encoded in a matrix $H$ satisfying certain conditions, a construction procedure is described that produces an abstract GMRA with multiplicity function $m $ and filter system $H$. An equivalence relation on GMRAs is defined and described in terms of their associated pairs $(m,H)$. This classification system is applied to classical examples in $L^2 (\mathbb R^d)$ as well as to previously studied abstract examples.

Abstract:We study generalized filters that are associated to multiplicity functions and homomorphisms of the dual of an abelian group. These notions are based on the structure of generalized multiresolution analyses. We investigate when the Ruelle operator corresponding to such a filter is a pure isometry, and then use that characterization to study the problem of when a collection of closed subspaces, which satisfies all the conditions of a GMRA except the trivial intersection condition, must in fact have a trivial intersection. In this context, we obtain a generalization of a theorem of Bownik and Rzeszotnik.

Abstract:We define the notion of "projective" multiresolution analyses, for which, by definition, the initial space corresponds to a finitely generated projective module over the algebra $C(\btn)$ of continuous complex-valued functions on an $n$-torus. The case of ordinary multi-wavelets is that in which the projective module is actually free. We discuss the properties of projective multiresolution analyses, including the frames which they provide for $L^2(\brn)$. Then we show how to construct examples for the case of any diagonal $2 \times 2$ dilation matrix with integer entries, with initial module specified to be any fixed finitely generated projective $C(\mathbb T^2)$-module. We compute the isomorphism classes of the corresponding wavelet modules.

Abstract:Recently, a nonconvex relaxation of low-rank matrix recovery (LMR), called the Schatten- $p$ quasi-norm minimization ($0< p< 1$), was introduced instead of the previous nuclear norm minimization in order to approximate the problem of LMR closer. In this paper, we introduce a notion of the restricted $p$-isometry constants ( $0< p\\leq 1$) and derive a $p$ -RIP condition for exact reconstruction of LMR via Schatten-$p$ quasi-norm minimization. In particular, we determine how many random, Gaussian measurements are needed for the $p$-RIP condition to hold with high probability, which gives a theoretical result that it needs fewer measurements with small $p$ for exact recovery via Schatten- $p$ quasi-norm minimization than when $p=1$.

Abstract:We characterize scaling functions of nonstationary matrix-valued multiresolution analysis in the matrix-valued function space , l is a natural number. This is inspired by the work of Novikov, Protasov and Skopina on nonstationary multiresolution analysis of the space . Using a sequence of diagonal matrix-valued scaling functions in , the construction of matrixvalued nonstationary orthonormal wavelets associated with the affine group is presented. Nonstationary matrix-valued wavelet frames in terms of frames of closed subspaces associated with a given nonstationary multiresolution analysis are given. Finally, we give sufficient conditions for the sequence of scaling functions of nonstationary matrix-valued multiresolution analysis in the frequency domain.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with approximation on variable Lρp(·) spaces associated with a general exponent function p and a general bounded Borel measure ρ on an open subset Ω of Rd. We mainly consider approximation by Bernstein type linear operators. Under an assumption of log-Hölder continuity of the exponent function p, we verify a conjecture raised previously about the uniform boundedness of Bernstein-Durrmeyer and Bernstein-Kantorovich operators on the Lρp(·) space. Quantitative estimates for the approximation are provided for high orders of approximation by linear combinations of such positive linear operators. Motivating connections to classification and quantile regression problems in learning theory are also described.
