Abstract:Grid computing presents a new trend to distributed computation and Internet applications, which can construct a virtual single image of heterogeneous resources, provide uniform application interface and integrate widespread computational resources into super, ubiquitous and transparent aggregation. In the adoption of Grid computing, China, who is facing more resource heterogeneity and other specific demands, has put much effort on both research and practical utilization. In this paper, we introduce the major China Grid research projects and their perspective applications. First we give the overview of the four government-sponsored programs in Grid, namely the China National Grid, ChinaGrid, NSFC Grid, and ShanghaiGrid. Then we present six representative ongoing Grid systems in details, which are categorized into Grid middleware and Grid application. This paper provides the general picture of Grid computing in China, and shows the great efforts, devotion and confidence in China to use Grid technology to boost the society, economics and scientific research.

Abstract:Space grid structures are widely used in the field of structural engineering due to their good mechanical properties and simple construction procedures. This paper reviews the development of space grid structures and mainly introduces the development of space grid structures in China in recent years. Some typical applications of space grid structures are introduced and the technical developments are summarized. It shows that China not only has a large number of engineering applications of space grid structures, but also a rapid development of related technologies. Finally, some prospects for space grid structures are discussed.

Abstract:Grids aim at constructing a virtual single image of heterogeneous resources and provide uniform interface for distributed internet applications. China also devotes much passion and endeavour to the evolution of grid projects. Based on the experience in building and enhancing Chinese grids in collaboration with colleagues from around the globe, it is important to choose grid technologies that support and work on a wide variety of resources. Grid middleware research and development in China is described in this paper. First we give the overview of the three government-sponsored grid programmes, namely, China National Grid, ChinaGrid and NSFCGrid. Then three representative grid middleware, ChinaGrid Support Platform (CGSP), China National Grid Operation System (GOS), China Research and Development Environment Over Wide-area Network (CROWN) are introduced in detail from six aspects: design motivation, architecture, function modules, main features, interoperability, current status and applications. Finally, we abstract the main characteristics of these three middleware systems and put forward a comparison among them.

Abstract:This paper summarizes recent activities at Institute of Computing Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, in developing superservers for cluster and grid computing. We first identify market and technical trends observed from a Chinese perspective. Then we describe the research work in developing the Dawning series high performance computers and the China computational grid. We also highlight some on-going research work in developing grid-oriented superserver systems.

Abstract:As an effective way to solve various problems in modern power systems,microgrid is increasingly adopted in many developed countries.Via detailing the concept and schemes of microgrid worldwide,the paper aims to clarify the differences and similarities between microgrid and distributed generation(DG),and give some advices on its application in China.Firstly,the transition from DG to microgrid is presented and a typical topological structure of microgrid is employed to demonstrate its unique characteristics.Secondly,researches and developments on microgrid in various countries are summarized.The key topics and ongoing research and development programs are also listed and analyzed.Finally,based on the energy strategies and status of power systems in China,the developing potentials and the possible applications of microgrid in China are discussed.

Abstract:The nearest goal of ShanghaiGrid is to going to connect all supercomputers in this metropolis together to form a sharing environment for massive storage and grid computing. The first stage projects of ShanghaiGrid comprise four sub-projects, including 1) research on environment, protocols and standards of information gird infrastructure; 2) development of system software for information grid and establishment of four major grid nodes; 3) development of peer-to-peer based virtual research platform; 4) research on the application of grid based traffic-jam control and guidance. This paper introduces the background of ShanghaiGrid, provides a glimpse at features and challenges of its sub-projects, and summarizes the general goal of them.

Abstract:The goal of ShanghaiGrid is providing information services to the people. ShanghaiGrid is a long term plan sponsored by Science and Technology Commission of Shanghai Municipality with 50 million RMB funds (about 6 million USD) from the government and others. It aims at constructing metropolis-area information services grid infrastructure and establishing an open standard for widespread upper-layer applications from both research communities and official departments. This paper reviews the state of the art of the advances in ShanghaiGrid, the one of the top five grand grid projects in China.

Abstract:The weakness of new drug R&D capacity has restricted the development of bio-medicine industry of China. This paper analyzes the requirements of the key activities in bio-medicine R&D process. It points out that those requirements can be met through the application of Grid technology which aims at resource sharing and collaborative work. Grid technology application can bring the capacity of super computing, bio-medicine data integration, equipment sharing and collaborative work environment. Those together can provide support to and enhance the R&D capacity of China's bio-medicine industry.

Abstract:The Smart Grid is the latest direction for the future power system development. In this paper, firstly the background of Smart Grid, its meaning, as well as the concept and structure were presented. Typical diagram of Smart Grid was illustrated. Then, the current development of Smart Grid in United States and Europe were described, development ideas and the future trends in these countries were summarized and compared as well. Besides, the driving force of Smart Grid in China was analyzed, with detailed introduction of current related projects in China. The relation between the UHV Power Grid and the Smart Grid was discussed. Finally, the potential role of Smart Grid in future power grids in China was prospected and a new direction for China's Smart Grid development was charted.

Abstract:Smart Grid presages an advanced power grid that revolutionizes the century-old traditional power grid and the way mankind uses energy. In China, the pressure on the current grid exerted by growing demand, environmental issues and the unbalanced energy use structure makes the transition to a 'smarter' and 'cleaner' grid inevitable. This paper firstly contrasts the concepts and research priorities of Smart Grid of China and other developed countries; then turns to the situation of Chinese energy and power use. China has the largest generating capacity, 79% of which is coal-fired plants. And China is also the largest carbon emitter in the world. Despite the challenges, China is also the most promising market for Smart Grid. The components of Smart Grid, especially the development of renewable energy, electric vehicles and smart substation are reinforced in the Chinese 12th Five-Year Plan (2011-2015). The paper examines also efforts by government, power utilities and research institutes. The paper concludes that developing Smart Grid will be beneficial both to China and the world. © 2013 Taylor & Francis.

Abstract:The current grid technology can be viewed as an extension or application of this framework to create a more generic resource sharing context. Grid technology is widely emerging. Still, there is an eminent shortage of real grid users, due to the absence of two important catalysts. A widely accepted vision on how applications can substantially benefit from grids, and second a toolkit of higher-level grid services, tailored to application needs. The grid aims to provide fundamentally new capabilities for applications to exploit the power of grid computing. We present a architecture of grid, middleware and its application technology, a large-scale, grid-empowered applications and then discuss grid general architecture and its grid application. We illustrate how applications can be grid-enabled and discuss grid as an tool for computing services.
