Abstract:In the Late Qing and the Republic of China,scholars had developed different paths in transforming traditional academics and bridging Sino-Western and old-new in the context of the evolution of Classical Studies and Historiography.Two distinct schools of Confucianism came into being in the Republic of China: one was the historical ″Guwen″ represented by Zhang Taiyan and his students,the other was the philosophic Jinwen represented by Liaoping and his students.With the aggravation of the National Calamity in the 1930s and revival of Confucianism,it was a common practice to promote Chinese culture and national spirits.Thus the transformation and practice of Confucianism became the focus in the discussion between the two different schools.During the dispute Meng Wentong and Li Yuancheng,Liao Ping's students,argued with Zhang Taiyan and Huang Kan constantly about sinology and Neo-Confucianism,″Jinwen″ and ″Guwen,″ and ″Classical Studies″ and ″Historiography″ to clarify the origin and development of Confucian philosophy. After a careful study of Qing's academic history and looking into the relations between Dai Zhen's philosophy and Xun Zi,Zhang Taiyan emphasized the unique significance of Dai Zhen in Qing's Academic history.On the contrary,Meng Wentong and Li Yuancheng resorted to traditional sinology and Confucian theories to question the construction of Dai Zhen's theory.Based on the examination of Examine Goodness,Li Yuancheng criticized Dai Zhen's doctrine of Ethics,Desire and Goodness as a misunderstanding of Mencius.Based on Guwen and centreing around the separation of Confucianism and Buddhism,Zhang Taiyan stressed the reliability of the historical account of the Six Classics to respond to the Skeptical School and illustrated the ideological and cultural tradition of China in the past two thousand years.Li Yuancheng had developed Liao Ping's theory and discussed with Zhang Taiyan the Rites and Spring and Autumn aiming to link ″Jinwen″ and ″Guwen″ and to reiterate the Great Righteousness of Spring and Autumn.Meng Wentong,through his study of the development of Confucian philosophy in Zhou dynasty,Qin dynasty and the two Han dynasties,attempted to find the succession of Confucianism and Mencius's thoughts,to analyze the philosophy of ″humanity and destiny,″ to interpret the controversies over Mencius and Xun Zi,to clarify the origin of sinology,and to challenge Cheng Zhu Confucian Orthodoxy.In short,Liao Ping's students had constructed a Confucian system based on the ″Goodness″ of Mencius,theoretically paving the way for for Jinwen and Confucian historiography. The school of Zhang Taiyan-Huang Kan purported to explore the development of national cultures,focused on the language and history,and advocated the cultivation of mind and behavior.Thus,it had associated moral ethics with political and social pragmaticism and had started the practical academics of Classical Studies and Historiography.In contrast,Liao Ping's students emphasized on constructing an dynamic interaction between the meanings of Classics,institution,and historical facts,carrying forward the ″New Confucianism of Qin and Han,″ and elucidating the revolutionary spirit of Jinwen and system design.Dispute of ″Jinwen″ and ″Guwen″ manifested the core difference of the academic interests between the schools of Zhang Taiyan-Huang Kan and Liao Ping's students.A clarification of their differences and disputes is of importance in interpreting the diversification of modern Confucianism and providing intellectual resources for the building of a nation-state or a civilization-state.

Abstract:It is with Chinese traditional culture as the reference culture that GUO Song tao was understanding western culture . Because of his overall understanding of Chinese and western culture, he could break the culture selection-and-rejection formula which was called Zhong Ti Xi Yong when he was comparing and selecting between Chinese and western culture. Meanwhile, the background of early modern exchange between Chinese and western culture also limited his views on western culture, which led to a series of contradictions and reflected obvious times limitation.

Abstract:Liang Shu-ming started his discussion from the concept of "intention': the selection leads to different life directions,to different cultural patterns and to unique cultural systems.His cultural pluralist standpoint derives 'three world cultural approaches' and 'three recurrence stages of world cultures'.His macroscopic comparison of the Chinese,Western and Indian cultures explores the national identity of Chinese culture and points out the future direction of development with the advent of the surge of western thoughts.Reflections on his thoughts are conducive to understanding the twists and turns of the development of the traditional Chinese culture in modern times and also to judging the future and the value of Chinese culture.

Abstract:Wang Guo-wei is a representative of modern history study and was once regarded as "Pioneer of New History Study".His studies on literature,philosophy,history and so on are far more outstanding than his research on Jingxue due to the fact that Jingxue was neglected in modern times.However,after he took his travel to Japan and turned his research focus from literature and philosophy to history,Jingxue became a break-through for his great achievements in the later years.To Wang Guo-wei,Jingxue did not belong to Jinwen tradition as seen by Kang Youwei,neither did it belong to Guwen tradition perceived by Zhang Taiyan.It's no doubt that his work bears the most distinctive features in the argument on Jinwen and Guwen during late Qing and early Minguo period: through his study on the meanings of "Guwen" in "Shiji",he reveals the real sense of the works in early Han Dynasty;through his similar study on "Guwen" in "Hanshu",he makes clear the meanings of the works in early Eastern Han Dynasty;by studying "Shuowenjiezi",he understands what is discussed in "Shuowen";by studying the classics of Wei Dynasty carved in three different script styles,he understands the "Guwen Theory" in Wei,Jin and Six Kingdoms;It is also through his systematic study on Han Guwen school of thoughts that he realizes the significance of "Guwen" turning from script style to school of thoughts.In a word,by employing a new perspective,that is,by taking the advantage of the newly discovered new materials such as the excavated Jiaguwen as well as Jinwen(金文),Wang Guo-wei enables the research on Jingxue and its history to be more convincing and reliable.

Abstract:In the new works named Chinese Literature in 20 Century and Culture of China and Foreign Country,Mr.Chen discusses two fold compact on Chinese literature in 20 Century from culture of foreign country and tradition of the Chinese nation and mutual relations which are between social transformation in modern China and literary variation,literary trends and writings,religious consciousness and artistic spirit.These propositions have not be involved or not deeply explored by the former researchers.In discussion of Mr.Chen,creative opinions,convincing conclusions,sound research and sufficient demonstration not only possess strongly historical and inquiring consciousness,but also maintain his consistently fair and sensible academic research style.These should provide inspiration and beneficial effect for later researchers.

Abstract:This article holds the different views about the Gao Pingling Coup,which differs from the views of Chen Yinque's book Shi Zhong Huizhuan four literary section after completion of the beginning and Mr. Wang's Biography of Wang Bi.There is neither obvious dispute about politics behind the evolution in Wei and Jin Dynasties,nor the struggle over ideology and culture behind the Gao Pingling Coup.This reveals that Confucianism has accumulated and bred the main part of Chinese culture,both political and ideological culture,after nearly four hundred years' official ideology of Confucianism throughout the Han Dynasties. Therefore,both parties of the Gao Pingling Coup have more similarities than differences in the political and ideological culture.

Abstract:It might be improper to overrate the importance of the ideological chasm between the Ming and Qing. The Qing intellectuals obviously could not take themselves out of the tradition of Song-Ming when they faced the relation between Confucianism and religion,and from this angle,an ideological continuality is found in the Ming-Qing thoughts. This paper focuses on Qing Confucians' interpretation of the religious classics,the religious culture and the narration of the supernatural. It brings a new angle for the ideology,morality and cultural characters of the post-16th Century's Chinese society,which might be able to link the Ming-Qing thoughts to the Song-Ming Confucianism.

Abstract:Sima Guang is one of the foregoers of Confucian interpreters in the Song Dynasty.His book Zhong Yong Guang Yi was lost long ago,though.It is difficult for the later scholars to understand his ideas carried in this book.This paper is trying to discuss the two core conceptions of Xing and Cheng in Zhong Yong from the angle of Sima by collecting several pieces of material from Wei Shi's Li Ji Ji Shuo and combining them with the interrelated pieces from Sima's Collections(Wen Ji).Those questions from Sima,either on xing or cheng,have all become the core vocabularies of later Daoism.Therefore,on one side,Sima inherited the tradition of the Han and Tang dynasties.On the other side,he approaches the new ethos of the Song and Ming dynasties.

Abstract:CAI Yuan-pei's view on the Chinese and Western Culture constitutes an important and most characteristic part of his school of thought.In regard to traditional culture,he advocated deconstructing Confucian ideology,stood for the reform on Chinese characters and criticized the non-scientific feature of traditional medicine,all of which are basically consistent with the New Culture Movement.On the other hand,he himself respected Confucius enormously and was in great favor of the Doctrine of the Mean of the Confucian school.With regard to Western culture,CAI Yuan-pei emphasizes greatly the importance of learning scientific concepts from the European culture,saying that Europeanization means scientification.He defined the New Culture Movement as the Chinese Renaissance.CAI Yuan-pei's view on the Chinese culture and the Western culture is of significant instructional value in the construction of the academic atmosphere at Peking University.

Abstract:Qian Qian- yi, a famous writer in the last years of the Ming Dynasty and the early years of the Qing Dynasty was a historical figure with complex thoughts and characters. His eventful life was marked with bitter experiences and unstable mental states. There was a mixture of the bad habit of indulgence particular to intellectuals in the last years of the Ming Dynasty and adherence to traditional moral standards. He claimed to hold aloof from those in power but was frequently involved in political whirlpool in pursuit of personal name and gain. Therefore, his fame was badly ruined. In his later years, encouraged by Liu Ru- shi, he participated in the restoration activities. His poems and history works at that time reflect the mental state of an intellectual adhering to the old order of the Ming Dynasty.

Abstract:The chair's words The western learning into the east began in the late Ming dynasty and early Qing dy-nasty. The European missionaries brought many western things and meanwhile some knowledge such as astronomy, calendar, mathematics and others that influenced Chinese community of knowledge. In the late Qing dynasty political awareness, philosophical thoughts, cultural ideas and others besides advanced technology were introduced into China. New kind of education and translated works influenced Chinese way of living and thinking that led to asking for novelty and changes, which changed the mode of rigid and exclusive thinking and recognition. Today studies on this history should focus on its realistic mean-ing, that's to say, howto viewthe traditional Chinese culture and recent western culture and the relation-ship of Chinese and western cultures in the rising heat of“ancient Chinese knowledge”. Only in this way can we put history as a mirror and push ahead China's reform and opening up to the outside world as well as modernization.

Abstract:The paper tries to point out the three contributions made by Mr.Qian Zhongshu in the comparative study of Chinese and Western philosophies.First,he pushed over the position that "Chinese isn't more thoughtful than German" by the fact that "the opposite meanings in a word" are exerted widely in Chinese philosophy.Second,he proved the identity of the way of human's philosophical thinking by the fact that the same thoughts of "harmony between human and nature" and "harmonious but different" in the West.Third,he proved the identity of the heart of poem and literature by comparative aesthetics.Mr.Qian maybe ignores the subtle differences between them,although he has demonstrated the universal law of "the hearts of the East and the West are the same".The deficiency may be remedied by Liang Zongdai's some points.

Abstract:As the founders of Contemporary Neo-Confucianism, Mou Zongsan and Tang Junyi developed different interpretations of Zhang Zai’s and Wang Fuzhi’s philosophies of qi. In this essay, both the strength and weakness of their interpretations will be critically examined. As a contrast, an alternative interpretation of the School of qi in Song-Ming Neo-Confucianism will be outlined. This new interpretation will uncover that, like Leibniz, Zhang Zai and Wang Fuzhi introduced a non-substantivalist approach in natural philosophy in terms of an innovative concept of force. This interpretation not only helps to show the limitations of Mou Zongsan’s and Tang Junyi’s understandings of Zhang Zai’s and Wang Fuzhi’s doctrines of qi, but also indicates a way to bridge the traditional Chinese philosophy of nature and modern physics. More generally, our critical discussions will bring to light a new angle with which to re-appreciate Mou Zongsan’s and Tang Junyi’s contributions to the development of Confucianism.

Abstract:Mr Gu Yanwu was a great enlightener and thinker of China in the 17th century.With the background of the replacement of the Ming Dynasty by the Qing Dynasty,Mr Gu gave a good summary of the historical lessons of the collapse of the Ming dynasty and reevaluated the economy,politics,ideology and culture of the Chinese tradition and proposed the far-sighted idea of learning the past for the future.He summarized the wisdom of the great men in the past 3,000 years in China and critically inherited the new ideas since the late Ming Dynasty in China.His new theoretical contributions to philosophy,history,ethics,economy,politics,religion and literature made him a great master of learning and exerted a far-reaching influence on the ideological emancipation and the social reform in the late Qing Dynasty.

Frontiers of Philosophy in China

Abstract:By analyzing Zhu Xi and Zhang Zai’s three representative explanatory paradigms—that of Feng Youlan, Mou Zongsan and Zhang Dainian, the paper tries to show that studying Chinese philosophy in a Western way and emphasizing logical consistency will unavoidably lead to the defects of simplicity and partiality. In addition to Buddhism and Daoism, Song-Ming philosophy had also absorbed thoughts from the Pre-Qin, Han, Wei and Jin dynasties. The existence of multiple philosophical thoughts and their new synthesis lead to internal contradictions in Song-Ming philosophy and Li Xue 理学 (Neo-Confucianism in the Song and Ming dynasties). The contradiction between the doctrine of tiandao 天道 (the way in which the world runs) and that of xinxing 心性 (mind and human nature) was even sharper. Li Xue and Xin Xue also overlapped one another. The transition from the doctrine of tiandao to that of xinxing was a long journey. It was begun by Zhu Xi in his later years, and was finally completed by Wang Yangming. Unveiling the complexity and special characteristics of Song-Ming philosophy is a task for scholars on the history of Chinese philosophy.
