Abstract:We develop a new approach to address some classical questions concerning the size and structure of integer distance sets. Our main result is that any integer distance set in the Euclidean plane has all but a very small number of points lying on a single line or circle. From this, we deduce a near-optimal lower bound on the diameter of any non-collinear integer distance set of size $n$ and a strong upper bound on the size of any integer distance set in $[-N,N]^2$ with no three points on a line and no four points on a circle.

Abstract:We control the number of critical points of a height function arising from the Nash isometric embedding of a compact Riemanniann-manifoldM. The Ln/2 curvature norm ∥R∥ and a similar scalar ∥R∥ are introduced and their integralR(M) andR(M) overM. We prove thatR(M) is bounded below by a constant depending only onn and the Betti numbers ofM. Thus a new sphere theorem is proved by eliminating allith Betti numbers fori = 1, .…n −1. The emphasis is that our sphere theorem imposes no restriction on the range of curvature.

Abstract:A set of lines in $\mathbb{R}^n$ is called equiangular if the angle between each pair of lines is the same. We derive new upper bounds on the cardinality of equiangular lines. Let us denote the maximum cardinality of equiangular lines in $\mathbb{R}^n$ with the common angle $\arccos \alpha$ by $M_{\alpha}(n)$. We prove that $M_{\frac 1 a} (n) \leq \frac 1 2 ( a^2-2) ( a^2-1)$ for any $n \in \mathbb{N}$ in the interval $a^2 -2 \leq n \leq 3 a^2-16$ and $a \geq 3$. Moreover, we discuss the relation between equiangular lines and spherical two-distance sets and we obtain the new results on the maximum spherical two-distance sets in $\mathbb{R}^n$ up to $n \leq 417$.

Abstract:In this paper, we first present some sufficient conditions for the upper semicontinuity and/or the continuity of the Bregman farthest-point map $Q_C^g$ and the relative farthest-point map $S_C^g$ for a nonempty $D$-maximally approximately compact subset $C$ of a Banach space $X$. We next present certain sufficient conditions as well as equivalent conditions for a Klee set to be singleton in a Banach space $X$. Our results extend and/or improve the corresponding ones of [Bauschke, et al., J. Approx. Theory, 158 (2009), pp. 170-183] to infinite dimensional spaces.

Abstract:A set in $\mathbb R^d$ is called almost-equidistant if for any three distinct points in the set, some two are at unit distance apart. First, we give a short proof of the result of Bezdek and Lángi claiming that an almost-equidistant set lying on a $(d-1)$-dimensional sphere of radius $r$, where $r<1/\sqrt{2}$, has at most $2d+2$ points. Second, we prove that an almost-equidistant set $V$ in $\mathbb R^d$ has $O(d)$ points in two cases: if the diameter of $V$ is at most $1$ or if $V$ is a subset of a $d$-dimensional ball of radius at most $1/\sqrt{2}+cd^{-2/3}$, where $c<1/2$. Also, we present a new proof of the result of Kupavskii, Mustafa and Swanepoel that an almost-equidistant set in $\mathbb R^d$ has $O(d^{4/3})$ elements.

Abstract:A finite set of the Euclidean space is called an s -distance set provided that the number of Euclidean distances in the set is s . Determining the largest possible s -distance set for the Euclidean space of a given dimension is challenging. This problem was solved only when dealing with small values of s and dimensions. Lisoněk (J Combin Theory Ser A 77(2):318–338, 1997) achieved the classification of the largest 2-distance sets for dimensions up to 7, using computer assistance and graph representation theory. In this study, we consider a theory analogous to these results of Lisoněk for the pseudo-Euclidean space . We consider an s -indefinite-distance set in a pseudo-Euclidean space that uses the value instead of the Euclidean distance. We develop a representation theory for symmetric matrices in the context of s -indefinite-distance sets, which includes or improves the results of Euclidean s -distance sets with large s values. Moreover, we classify the largest possible 2-indefinite-distance sets for small dimensions.

Abstract:We obtain box-counting estimates for the pinned distance sets of (dense subsets of) planar discrete Ahlfors-regular sets of exponent $s>1$. As a corollary, we improve upon a recent result of Orponen, by showing that if $A$ is Ahlfors-regular of dimension $s>1$, then almost all pinned distance sets of $A$ have lower box-counting dimension $1$. We also show that if $A,B\subset\mathbb{R}^2$ have Hausdorff dimension $>1$ and $A$ is Ahlfors-regular, then the set of distances between $A$ and $B$ has modified lower box-counting dimension $1$, which taking $B=A$ improves Orponen's result in a different direction, by lowering packing dimension to modified lower box-counting dimension. The proofs involve ergodic-theoretic ideas, relying on the theory of CP-processes and projections.

Abstract:Let $N_{\alpha,\beta}(d)$ denote the maximum size of a spherical two-distance set in $\mathbb{R}^d$ such that the inner products of distinct vectors only take $\alpha$ and $\beta$. By considering the correspondence between spherical two-distance sets and graphs with specific spectral properties, we determine $N_{\alpha,\beta}(d)$ for fixed $-1\leq\beta<0\leq\alpha<1$ and sufficiently large $d$, which extends the work in [Equiangular lines with a fixed angle, Ann. Math. 194 (2021) 729-743] and [Spherical two-distance sets and eigenvalues of signed graphs, Combinatorica 43 (2023) 203-232]. The limit $\lim_{d\rightarrow\infty}N_{\alpha,\beta}(d)/d$ is also derived from our work, that is, the problem of determining $\lim_{d\rightarrow\infty}N_{\alpha,\beta}(d)/d$ for any fixed $-1\leq\beta<0\leq\alpha<1$ is completely solved in the spherical $\{\alpha,\beta\}$-code setting.

Abstract:Let $\mbox{$\cal F$}\subseteq 2^{[n]}$ be a fixed family of subsets. Let $D(\mbox{$\cal F$})$ stand for the following set of Hamming distances: $$ D(\mbox{$\cal F$}):=\{d_H(F,G):~ F, G\in \mbox{$\cal F$},\ F\neq G\}. $$ $\mbox{$\cal F$}$ is said to be a Hamming symmetric family, if $d\in D(\mbox{$\cal F$})$ implies $n-d\in D(\mbox{$\cal F$})$ for each $d\in D(\mbox{$\cal F$})$. We give sharp upper bounds for the size of Hamming symmetric families. Our proof is based on the linear algebra bound method.

Abstract:For the distance function from any closed subset of any complete Finsler manifold, we prove that the singular set is equal to a countable union of delta‐convex hypersurfaces up to an exceptional set of codimension two. In addition, in dimension two, the whole singular set is equal to a countable union of delta‐convex Jordan arcs up to isolated points. These results are new even in the standard Euclidean space and shown to be optimal in view of regularity.

Abstract:The Erdős-Anning theorem states that every point set in the Euclidean plane with integer distances must be either collinear or finite. More strongly, for any (non-degenerate) triangle of diameter $\delta$, at most $O(\delta^2)$ points can have integer distances from all three triangle vertices. We prove the same results for any strictly convex distance function on the plane, and analogous results for every two-dimensional complete Riemannian manifold of bounded genus and for geodesic distance on the boundary of every three-dimensional Euclidean convex set. As a consequence, we resolve a 1983 question of Richard Guy on the equilateral dimension of Riemannian manifolds. Our proofs are based on the properties of additively weighted Voronoi diagrams of these distances.

On diagonal degrees and star networks

Abstract:Given an open cover $\mathcal{U}$ of a topological space $X$, we introduce the notion of a star network for $\mathcal{U}$. The associated cardinal function $sn(X)$, where $e(X)\leq sn(X)\leq L(X)$, is used to establish new cardinal inequalities involving diagonal degrees. We show $|X|\leq sn(X)^{\Delta(X)}$ for a $T_1$ space $X$, giving a partial answer to a long-standing question of Angelo Bella. Many further results are given using variations of $sn(X)$. One result has as corollaries Buzyakova's theorem that a ccc space with a regular $G_\delta$-diagonal has cardinality at most $\mathfrak{c}$, as well as three results of Gotchev. Further results lead to logical improvements of theorems of Basile, Bella, and Ridderbos, a partial solution to a question of the same authors, and a theorem of Gotchev, Tkachenko, and Tkachuk. Finally, we define the Urysohn extent $Ue(X)$ with the property $Ue(X)\leq\min\{aL(X),e(X)\}$ and use the Erdős-Rado theorem to show that $|X|\leq 2^{Ue(X)\overline{\Delta}(X)}$ for any Urysohn space $X$.

Abstract: Finding the maximum cardinality of a $2$-distance set in Euclidean space is a classical problem in geometry. Lison\v{e}k in 1997 constructed a maximum $2$-distance set in $\mathbb R^8$ with $45$ points. That $2$-distance set constructed by Lison\v{e}k has a distinguished structure of a coherent configuration of type $(2,2;3)$ and is embedded in two concentric spheres in $\mathbb R^8$. In this paper we study whether there exists any other similar embedding of a coherent configuration of type $(2,2;3)$ as a $2$-distance set in $\mathbb R^n$, without assuming any restriction on the size of the set. We prove that there exists no such example other than that of Lison\v{e}k. The key ideas of our proof are as follows: (i) study the geometry of the embedding of the coherent configuration in Euclidean spaces and to drive diophantine equations coming from this embedding. (ii) solve diophantine equations with certain additional conditions of integrality of some parameters of the combinatorial structure by using the method of auxiliary equations.

Abstract:We prove that, for every norm on $\mathbb{R}^d$ and every $E \subseteq \mathbb{R}^d$, the Hausdorff dimension of the distance set of $E$ with respect to that norm is at least $\dim_{\mathrm{H}} E - (d-1)$. An explicit construction follows, demonstrating that this bound is sharp for every polyhedral norm on $\mathbb{R}^d$. The techniques of algorithmic complexity theory underlie both the computations and the construction.

Abstract:In this paper, we study extremal subsets in $n$-dimensional Alexandrov spaces with curvature $\ge\kappa$ and diameter $\le D$. We show that the number of extremal subsets in an Alexandrov space, the Betti number of an extremal subset, and the volume of an extremal subset are uniformly bounded above by some constant depending only on $n$, $\kappa$ and $D$. The proof is an application of essential coverings introduced by T. Yamaguchi.
