Abstract:A moduli algebraA(V ) of an isolated hypersurface singularity (V ,0) = {(z0, . . . , zn) : f (z0, . . . , zn) = 0} ⊆ Cn+1 is a finite dimensional C-algebra C{z0, . . . , zn}(f, ∂f ∂z0 , . . . , ∂f ∂zn ). In [2], Mather and Yau proved that two germs of complex analytic hypersurfaces of the same dimension with isolated singularities are biholomorphically equivalent if a nd only if their moduli algebras are isomorphic. This means that we should be able to determine the singularity by means of studying its corresponding commutative Artinian local algebra. In his paper [3], Saito computed j -invariants for the singularities̃ E6, Ẽ7, andẼ8. Each of these is determined by the elliptic curve which occurs as exceptinal divisor in the minimal resolution of the singularity. Seeley andYau [4] studied certain Lie algebras as sociated with the moduli algebras of Ẽ7 andẼ8 singularities. They defined a nilpotent Lie algebra Nt for each of these singularities and showed that Ns ∼= Nt if and only if the singularityVs is analytically equivalent to the Vt . They did this without reference to the resolution of the singularity, in fact even to the singularity itself. In this way, they were able to algebraically produce a modulus which was, up to a fractional linear transformation, equal to Saito’s j -invariant. The caseẼ6 is different in that the nilpotent Lie algebra Nt is independent of the parameter t [5]. Thus we have the following challenging problem for algebraist: Find the modulus of the one parameter family of commutative Artinian local algebras arising from̃E6 singularities without reference to the singularities. Abstract:Finite dimensional Lie algebras are semi-direct product of the semisimple Lie algebras and solvable Lie algebras. Brieskorn gave the connection between simple Lie algebras and simple singularities. Simple Lie algebras have been well understood, but not the solvable (nilpotent) Lie algebras. It is extremely important to establish connections between singularities and solvable (nilpotent) Lie algebras. In this article, a new natural connection between the set of complex analytic isolated hypersurface singularities and the set of finite dimensional solvable (nilpotent) Lie algebras has been constructed. We construct finite dimensional solvable (nilpotent) Lie algebras naturally from isolated hypersurface singularities. These constructions help us to understand the solvable (nilpotent) Lie algebras from the geometric point of view. Moreover, it is known that the classification of nilpotent Lie algebras in higher dimensions (> 7) remains to be a vast open area. There are one-parameter families of non-isomorphic nilpotent Lie algebras (but no two-parameter families) in dimension seven. Dimension seven is the watershed of the existence of such families. It is well-known that no such family exists in dimension less than seven, while it is hard to construct one-parameter family in dimension greater than seven. In this article, we construct an one-parameter family of solvable (resp. nilpotent) Lie algebras of dimension 11 (resp. 10) from (E) over tilde (7) singularities and show that the weak Torelli-type theorem holds. We shall also construct an one-parameter family of solvable (resp. nilpotent) Lie algebras of dimension 12 (resp. 11) from (E) over tilde (8) singularities and show that the Torelli-type theorem holds. Moreover, we investigate the numerical relation between the dimensions of the new Lie algebras and Yau algebras. Finally, the new Lie algebras arising from fewnomial isolated singularities are also computed.
Singular algebraic curves and infinite symplectic staircases

Abstract:We show that the infinite staircases which arise in the ellipsoid embedding functions of rigid del Pezzo surfaces can be entirely explained in terms of rational sesquicuspidal symplectic curves. Moreover, we show that these curves can all be realized algebraically, giving various new families of algebraic curves with one cusp singularity. Our main techniques are (i) a generalized Orevkov twist, and (ii) the interplay between algebraic $\Q$-Gorenstein smoothings and symplectic almost toric fibrations. Along the way we develop various methods for constructing singular algebraic (and hence symplectic) curves which may be of independent interest.

Algebraic solutions of linear differential equations: an arithmetic approach

Abstract:Given a linear differential equation with coefficients in $\mathbb{Q}(x)$, an important question is to know whether its full space of solutions consists of algebraic functions, or at least if one of its specific solutions is algebraic. After presenting motivating examples coming from various branches of mathematics, we advertise in an elementary way a beautiful local-global arithmetic approach to these questions, initiated by Grothendieck in the late sixties. This approach has deep ramifications and leads to the still unsolved Grothendieck-Katz $p$-curvature conjecture.

Local Euler characteristics of $A_n$-singularities and their application to hyperbolicity

Abstract:Wahl's local Euler characteristic measures the local contributions of a singularity to the usual Euler characteristic of a sheaf. Using tools from toric geometry, we study the local Euler characteristic of sheaves of symmetric differentials for isolated surface singularities of type $A_n$. We prove an explicit formula for the local Euler characteristic of the $m$th symmetric power of the cotangent bundle; this is a quasi-polynomial in $m$ of period $n+1$. We also express the components of the local Euler characteristic as a count of lattice points in a non-convex polyhedron, again showing it is a quasi-polynomial. We apply our computations to obtain new examples of algebraic quasi-hyperbolic surfaces in $\mathbb{P}^3$ of low degree. We show that an explicit family of surfaces with many singularities constructed by Labs has no genus $0$ curves for the members of degree at least $8$ and no curves of genus $0$ or $1$ for degree at least $10$.

Abstract:We study singular real-analytic Levi-flat hypersurfaces in complex projective space. We define the rank of an algebraic Levi-flat hypersurface and study the connections between rank, degree, and the type and size of the singularity. In particular, we study degenerate singularities of algebraic Levi-flat hypersurfaces. We then give necessary and sufficient conditions for a Levi-flat hypersurface to be a pullback of a real-analytic curve in $\mathbb{C}$ via a meromorphic function. Among other examples, we construct a nonalgebraic semianalytic Levi-flat hypersurface with compact leaves that is a perturbation of an algebraic Levi-flat variety.

Abstract:There are many numerical methods for solving partial different equations (PDEs) on manifolds such as classical implicit, finite difference, finite element, and isogeometric analysis methods which aim at improving the interoperability between finite element method and computer aided design (CAD) software. However, these approaches have difficulty when the domain has singularities since the solution at the singularity may be multivalued. This paper develops a novel numerical approach to solve elliptic PDEs on real, closed, connected, orientable, and almost smooth algebraic curves and surfaces. Our method integrates numerical algebraic geometry, differential geometry, and a finite difference scheme which is demonstrated on several examples.

Abstract:Yuan and Zhang introduced arithmetic intersection numbers for adelic line bundles on quasi-projective varieties over a number field. Burgos and Kramer generalized this approach allowing more singular metrics at archimedean places. We introduce abstract divisorial spaces as a tool to generalize these arithmetic intersection numbers to the setting of a proper adelic base curve in the sense of Chen and Moriwaki. We also allow more singular metrics at non-archimedean places using relative mixed energy there as well.

On supercritical elliptic problems: existence, multiplicity of positive and symmetry breaking solutions

Abstract:The main thrust of our current work is to exploit very specific characteristics of a given problem in order to acquire improved compactness for supercritical problems and to prove existence of new types of solutions. To this end, we shall develop a variational machinery in order to construct a new type of classical solutions for a large class of supercritical elliptic partial differential equations.\\ The issue of symmetry and symmetry breaking is challenging and fundamental in mathematics and physics. Symmetry breaking is the source of many interesting phenomena namely phase transitions, instabilities, segregation, etc. As a consequence of our results we shall establish the existence of several symmetry breaking solutions when the underlying problem is fully symmetric. Our methodology is variational, and we are not seeking non symmetric solutions which bifurcate from the symmetric one. Instead, we construct many new positive solutions by developing a minimax principle for general semilinear elliptic problems restricted to a given convex subset instead of the whole space. As a byproduct of our investigation, several new Sobolev embeddings are established for functions having a mild monotonicity on symmetric monotonic domains.

Abstract:The Levi theorem tells us that every finite-dimensional Lie algebra is the semi-direct product of a semi-simple Lie algebra and a solvable Lie algebra. In this paper, we give a new connection between nilpotent Lie algebras and nilradicals of derivation Lie algebras of isolated complete intersection singularities. As an application, we obtain the correspondence between the nilpotent Lie algebras of dimension less than or equal to 7 and the nilradicals of derivation Lie algebras of isolated complete intersection singularities with modality less than or equal to 1. Moreover, we give a new characterization theorem for zero-dimensional simple complete intersection singularities.

Abstract:We provide a theoretical study of Algebraic Geometry codes constructed from abelian surfaces defined over finite fields. We give a general bound on their minimum distance and we investigate how this estimation can be sharpened under the assumption that the abelian surface does not contain low genus curves. This approach naturally leads us to consider Weil restrictions of elliptic curves and abelian surfaces which do not admit a principal polarization.

Abstract:We revisit the group structure on elliptic curves and give a simple and elementary proof of the associativity of the addition. We do this by providing an explicit formula for the sum of three points, only using the explicit definition of the group structure. In the process we find a nice geometric interpretation of the sum of three points on the elliptic curve.

Abstract:Singular ruled surface is an interesting research object and is the breakthrough point of exploring new problems. However, because of singularity, it’s difficult to study the properties of singular ruled surfaces. In this paper, we combine singularity theory and Clifford algebra to study singular ruled surfaces. We take advantage of the dual number of Clifford algebra to make the singular ruled surfaces transform into the dual singular curves on the dual unit sphere. By using the research method on the singular curves, we give the definition of the dual evolute of the dual front in the dual unit sphere, we further provide the k -th dual evolute of the dual front. Moreover, we consider the ruled surface corresponding to the dual evolute and k -th dual evolute and provide the developable conditions of these ruled surfaces.
