Abstract:During the past 20 years, a major challenge facing the Chinese offshore engineering community has been evaluating the feasibility of using gravity base platforms on extremely weak soils frequently encountered along the coast of China. Such structures are not well suited for weak soils because the foundation generally provides both inadequate vertical bearing capacity and horizontal sliding stability.Several measures are presented that either enhance the soil capacity or incorporate design features into the foundation base to make it more tolerant of weak soils. These include the use of geotextiles, fabriforms, bottom wedges (modified skirts related to North Sea design), spud piles, and sand wells for drainage (often called weak drains). Analysis has shown that such measures can adequately improve foundation stability for certain soil conditions. The economic incentive that gravity platforms have for offshore China is that a single structure can be moved to serve several marginal reservoirs.
