Abstract:The conformational changes of quinoxaline-bridged cavitands deposited as Langmuir films were monitored at different pH values of the subphase using surface second harmonic generation during the compression of the monolayer at the water surface. A quantitative analysis of the susceptibility tensor elements was performed for methylene (MeCav)- and quinoxaline (QxCav)-bridged cavitands for pH values varying between 5.7 and 0.1. For MeCav (reference compound), no significant changes were observed for different pHs, confirming that the cavity does not undergo protonation or a drastic conformational change. For the QxCav, however, the results suggest a partial opening of the cavity on the basis of analysis of the compression curves.

Abstract:Surface-sensitive sum-frequency vibrational spectroscopy (SFVS) has grown into a most viable analytical tool to investigate Langmuir monolayer systems. It has been successful in deducing information on many key properties of Langmuir films not obtainable by other techniques. This review gives a survey on the current status of SFVS studies of Langmuir monolayers with emphasis on the structures of both surfactant monolayers and interfacial water under various circumstances.

Abstract:Liquid interfaces play a fundamental role in science and technology. The development of surface-sensitive probes capable of yielding molecular information about these interfaces is of great importance. This paper gives an overview of our and some others' recent work on vibrational spectroscopy of liquid interfaces by the sum-frequency generation (SFG) technique. This technique, being highly surface specific and applicable to all interfaces accessible by light, has been proven to be a most powerful analytical tool for liquid interfaces. A wide range of systems have been studied including neat liquid surfaces, solid/liquid and liquid/liquid interfaces, surfactants at liquid interfaces, and electrochemical interfaces. In many cases, SFG is shown to be the only technique available that can provide detailed information about a liquid interface at the molecular level.

Abstract:A sum-frequency spectroscopy scheme is developed that allows the measurement of vibrational spectra of the interfacial molecular structure of charged water interfaces. The application of this scheme to a prototype lipid-aqueous interface as a demonstration reveals an interfacial hydrogen-bonding water layer structure that responds sensitively to the charge state of the lipid headgroup and its interaction with specific ions. This novel technique provides unique opportunities to search for better understanding of electrochemistry and biological aqueous interfaces at a deeper molecular level.

Abstract:Over the last decade, infrared-visible sum-frequency generation has been developed into a powerful vibrational spectroscopic technique, especially for surface studies. We give here a brief review of the technique and a few recent applications of the technique to liquid and polymer surfaces. We also describe how the technique has found unique applications in our studies of surface melting of ice, ferroelectric ice films, and molecular chirality in chiral liquids. Doubly resonant sum-frequency generation as surface-specific two-dimensional spectroscopy is discussed.

Abstract:Surface second harmonic generation (SHG) was used to probe orientation of cavitand molecules deposited on water as Langmuir films and on fused silica substrates either bare or functionalized with a surfactant. Measurements performed during compression of the Langmuir films reveal that while the surface density may vary, molecules always appear more or less oriented with their long axis perpendicular to the water surface. Phase measurements indicate that the vase-like heads of the molecules cover the water for Langmuir films, but face the air for monolayers spread on surfactant-coated substrates.

Abstract:Sum-frequency vibrational spectroscopy was used as a novel technique to probe the molecular chirality of thin polymer films. Chiral vibrational spectra of poly(bithienylene-phenylene) were obtained, and the two enantiomers were distinguished by an interference method. Vibration-electronic double resonance was responsible for the observation of unusually strong chiral spectra of the phenylene vibration modes.

Abstract:Surface vibrational spectroscopy is of central importance for surface studies. Most of the existing spectroscopic techniques, unfortunately, have serious limitations. Recently, we have developed a new versatile surface spectroscopic tool, infrared-visible sum-frequency generation (SFG)1, that has a number of clear advantages over the existing techniques. Like optical second harmonic generation, SFG is highly surface-specific, and is applicable to all interfaces accessible by light. With the help of ultrashort pump pulses, it has the potential of being able to monitor in-situ surface dynamics, surface reactions, and intermediate transient species with picosecond time resolution.

Abstract:Vibrational spectral line shape contains important detailed information on molecular vibration and reports its specific interactions and couplings to its local environment. In this work, recently developed sub-1 cm–1 high-resolution broadband sum frequency generation vibrational spectroscopy (HR-BB-SFG-VS) was used to measure the −C≡N stretch vibration in the 4-n-octyl-4′-cyanobiphenyl (8CB) Langmuir or Langmuir–Blodgett (LB) monolayer as a unique vibrational probe, and the spectral line shape analysis revealed the local environment and interactions at the air/water, air/glass, air/calcium fluoride, and air/α-quartz interfaces for the first time. The 8CB Langmuir or LB film is uniform, and the vibrational spectral line shape of its −C≡N group has been well characterized, making it a good choice as the surface vibrational probe. Line shape analysis of the 8CB −C≡N stretch SFG vibrational spectra suggests the coherent vibrational dynamics and the structural and dynamic inhomogeneity of the −C≡N group at each interface are uniquely different. In addition, it is also found that there are significantly different roles for water molecules in the LB films on different substrate surfaces. These results demonstrated the novel capabilities of the surface nonlinear spectroscopy in characterization and in understanding the specific structures and chemical interactions at the liquid and solid interfaces in general.

Abstract:We simulate vibrational strong coupling (VSC) and vibrational ultrastrong coupling (V-USC) for liquid water with classical molecular dynamics simulations. When the cavity modes are resonantly coupled to the O-H stretch mode of liquid water, the infrared spectrum shows asymmetric Rabi splitting. The lower polariton (LP) may be suppressed or enhanced relative to the upper polariton (UP) depending on the frequency of the cavity mode. Moreover, although the static properties and the translational diffusion of water are not changed under VSC or V-USC, we do find the modification of the orientational autocorrelation function of H2O molecules especially under V-USC, which could play a role in ground-state chemistry.

Abstract:Abstract : Measurement of the nonlinear vibrational spectrum of molecules at a liquid/liquid interface has recently been achieved by the use of total internal reflection sum frequency vibrational spectroscopy (TIR SFVS). This report describes this nonlinear optical technique and gives examples of the type of information which has been obtained about interfacial water and surfactants adsorbed at this interface. The surfactants examined include simple alkyl cationic and anionic surfactants commonly used in cleaning products, and phosphatidylcholines which comprise the major component of cell membranes. Studies of interfacial water involve comparative studies at air/water and oil/water interfaces, and the effect of adsorbed surfactant on the water structure and orientation at these two interfaces.

Abstract:The rich chemistry of oxide/aqueous interfaces originates from the interfacial layer formed by surface charges and adjoining water molecules. Yet not much is clear about such layers, because they are difficult to access, and measurements unavoidably collect signals from the diffuse layer nearby, which is perturbed by the surface potential extending into the bulk water. Here we show that gating of a semiconductor/oxide/water junction can effectively vary the surface charge density at the oxide/water interface but keep the surface potential low and barely varying, allowing effective removal of the diffuse layer contribution. With sum-frequency vibrational spectroscopy on a silicon/silica/deionized-water model junction, the variation of the bonded layer water structure in response to surface charging can be readily detected. This new scheme is generally applicable to all oxide/water interfaces, providing opportunities for future investigations at a deeper molecular level.

Abstract:In the present work, we provide an electronic structure based method for the "on-the-fly" determination of vibrational sum frequency generation (v-SFG) spectra. The predictive power of this scheme is demonstrated at the air-water interface. While the instantaneous fluctuations in dipole moment are obtained using the maximally localized Wannier functions, the fluctuations in polarizability are approximated to be proportional to the second moment of Wannier functions. The spectrum henceforth obtained captures the signatures of hydrogen bond stretching, bending, as well as low-frequency librational modes.

Abstract:Precisely controlling well-defined, stable single-molecule junctions represents a pillar of single-molecule electronics. Early attempts to establish computing with molecular switching arrays were partly challenged by limitations in the direct chemical characterization of metal molecule metal junctions. While cryogenic scanning probe studies have advanced the mechanistic understanding of current- and voltage-induced conformational switching, metal molecule metal conformations are still largely inferred from indirect evidence. Hence, the development of robust, chemically sensitive techniques is instrumental for advancement in the field. Here we probe the conformation of a two-state molecular switch with vibrational spectroscopy, while simultaneously operating it by means of the applied voltage. Our study emphasizes measurements of single-molecule Raman spectra in a room-temperature stable single-molecule switch presenting a signal modulation of nearly 2 orders of magnitude.

Abstract:Experimental insight into the elementary processes underlying charge transfer across interfaces has blossomed with the wide-spread availability of ultra-high vacuum set-ups that allow the preparation and characterization of solid surfaces with well-defined molecular adsorbates over a wide ranges of temperatures. Thick layers of molecular adsorbates or heterostructures of 2D materials generally preclude the use of electrons or atoms as probes in such characterization. However with linear photon-in/photon-out techniques it is often challenging to assign the observed optical response to a particular portion of the interface. We and prior workers have demonstrated in work under ambient conditions that by full characterization of the symmetry of the second order nonlinear optical susceptibility, i.e. the $\chi^{(2)}$, in sum frequency generation (SFG) spectroscopy, this problem can be overcome. Here we describe an ultra-high vacuum system built to allow conventional UHV sample preparation and characterization, femtosecond and polarization resolved SFG spectroscopy, the azimuthal sample rotation necessary to fully describe $\chi^{(2)}$ symmetry and with sufficient stability to allow scanning SFG microscopy. We demonstrate these capabilities in proof-of-principle measurements on CO adsorbed on Pt(111) and of the clean Ag(111) surface. Because this set-up allows both full characterization of the nonlinear susceptibility and the temperature control and sample preparation/characterization of conventional UHV set-ups we expect it to be of great utility in investigation of both the basic physics and applications of solid, 2D material heterostructures.

Abstract:Recent developments in sum frequency generation-vibrational spectroscopy (SFG-VS) have shown that SFG-VS is not only a spectroscopic probe of the molecular interfaces but also an important tool for studying molecular spectroscopy in general. It has been demonstrated that through polarization and symmetry analysis a few sets of polarization selection rules can explicitly help the vibrational spectral assignment. This worked because of the coherent nature and the strong orientational dependence of the SFG process from the molecular interfaces or films. In this work, we further discuss the dependence on the experimental configurations in the SFG-VS polarization analysis. Such experiment and analysis can further increase the ability of the SFG-VS as the tool for discerning spectral details and overlapping spectral features, as well as the ability to obtain detailed molecular orientational information. The experimental configuration dependence of the SFG spectra is most significant in the ppp polarization combination, less significant in the sps and ssp polarization combinations, due to the fact that ppp is the result of the combination of four different susceptibility tensor elements, while both ssp and sps are of a single tensor element. Such complexity of the ppp spectrum, which is very useful as demonstrated in this work, used to be avoided in the SFG-VS studies. The spectral details of the SFG-VS from the vapor/methanol, vapor/ethanol, and vapor/ethylene glycol interfaces are studied in different experimental configurations. The strong experimental configuration dependence observed for these liquid interfaces also indicated that they possess well-ordered interfacial structures. The concepts and conclusions in this report may find future applications in studying more complex molecular interfaces and films.
