Abstract:The famous question “Who do we need , Kant or Hegel?”, which was raised by Chinese phi-losophers in 1980 ’ s, hadn’ t been answered adequately at that time .After a long period of chasing all kinds of current western philosophical trends , we find that this question remains unanswered yet even at the present age.By comparing Kant ’ s and Hegel’ s philosophical system as a whole , we can identify three great advanta-ges in either of them.In Kant’s philosophy, the enormous inclusiveness or openness , a humanist ethical per-spective and a conservative -transcendent idealism constitute the most significant characteristics .While the sense of reality based on the unity of history and logic , the dialectics ( which signifies the unity of ontology , logic and history ) as logic of freedom and the comprehensive insight into the inner development of human spirit from a broad cultural perspective , are the distinct traits of Hegel ’ s philosophy .It is worth noticing that Kant ’ s advantages correspond to Hegel ’ s disadvantages and vice versa .This leads to the conclusion that they are complementary to each other .If my arguments above are true , then the proper answer to the famous question is that we need both Kant and Hegel .Both Kant’s and Hegel’s philosophical thoughts could play a crucial role in the cultural transformation in contemporary China .
