Abstract:In the process of the establishment of Chinese opera discipline in the 20th century,the formation of the modern scholar groups was a very important factor.The formation of the modern scholar groups had benefited from the changes of personnel training mechanism.The abolition of the imperial examination system had changed the intellectuals' outlook on life,and made them free from the bondage of old education value that "he who excels in study can follow an official career".Therefore,the obstacles of establishing the Chinese modern academic fields,including the opera discipline,had been removed and the mechanism of personnel training had also been solved.The new system of higher education and academic system were important mechanism to the development of opera studies.Two generations of scholars had participated in establishing the discipline of the Chinese opera.The first generation of scholars was the creator of the modern academic,and they were also the pioneers and founders of Chinese opera;the second generation of scholars had consolidated and improved the Chinese opera studies,and they had an important impact on the opera studies in the latter half of the 20th century.Through the joint efforts of the two generations of scholars,the discipline of the Chinese opera had been established.

Abstract:The study of Chinese Kunqu Opera over the past ninety years may be divided into three phases, from the early years of the Public of China to the outbreak of the War of Resistance Against Japan was the first phase. The study of Kunqu came into vogue and flowered at the thirties by opportunity. From the outbreak of the War to the advent of the Great Cultural Revolution was the second phase that was at low tide and the success of the Fifteen Guan had brought forth the performance and study of Kunqu for a short time. The study of Kunqu had made great progress in several ways since the seventies and is now confronted with many plights and challenges. Too much attention was paid to the study of literati, the qu in theater, the standard Kunju and too little to the study of troupers, the qu in refinement singing and folk Kunju in the history of Kunqu. And the theory of Juzhong and theory of the West theatre had swayed most of the study.

Abstract:Small theatre opera originated from the west, is a new style of opera with the characteristics of The Times, this novel form of artistic expression was introduced into China, in the art world in the end of 2001, playwright Chen Wei created and adapted the "Farewell to Cambridge", is the first small theatre opera to be performed in China. The work takes the May 4th New Culture Movement as the background, showing the struggle of Lin Huiyin, Xu Zhimo and other talents and beauties in ideal and reality, reason and emotion. This paper takes "A Peach Blossom" and "Flying Up by Day" in "Farewell to Cambridge" as the research object, and conducts in-depth research and analysis on the background of the creation of the work, Lin Huiyin's character image building and singing skills of the verse. I hope to improve my understanding and performance ability of this character through theoretical research and singing practice, and apply it in the study and research of future works.

Abstract:Wu Mei is not only proficient in opera,but also good at literary creation.His dramatic works about the times and politics,endowed with the characteristics of the era and spirit of critical realism,reflect his political views.His works about love and marriage,describing the social problems caused by the freedom to choose one's spouse,indicate his worry for free love.Hence his conviction of the traditional marriage.His works about anecdotes,conveying his personal interest and mood by depicting the romantic stories of the literati,reveal his early life and feelings.Through these operas we can know Wu Mei's artistic view and creative characteristics,namely,using the traditional opera styles,and paying attention to the melodic norms and harmony.

Abstract:Reviewed by: Ô Gishi ronkô Qianshen Bai (bio) Qi Xiaochun . Ô Gishi ronkô(A Study of Wang Xizhi). Osaka: Tôhô Shuppan, 2001. 457pp. ¥8,400, ISBN 4-88591-720-4. The graceful art of Wang Xizhi (ca. 303-ca. 361) has been accepted as the foremost example of Chinese calligraphic style for more than thirteen hundred years. Since his output was codified in the Tang dynasty (618-907), not only has Wang been deemed—in China, Japan, and Korea—as the Sage ( shusheng) of Calligraphers, but the classical tradition of calligraphy (the "model-book" school of calligraphy, or tiexue) was based and centered on his elegant art. From the Tang onward, the Asian scholastic tradition has produced endless catalogues of Wang's calligraphic canon and discussions of his art. Modern scholarship on Wang Xizhi in East Asia and the West has also been fruitful. In Japan, the distinguished scholar Nakata Yûjirô published two monumental works on Wang, 1and the leading calligrapher Uno Sesson compiled a comprehensive collection of Wang's calligraphy. 2In China, scholars in Wang's home province of Shandong have published his genealogy and a collection of essays on that region's native cultural champion. Scholars outside Shandong such as Wang Yuchi and Liu Tao have conducted additional in-depth research over the last two decades. While Wang Yuchi has been systemically studying Wang Xizhi's letters (many of these have survived because of their calligraphic value), 3Liu Tao's approach incorporates much historical scholarship, especially by those who study the political and cultural history of the Eastern Jin (317-420). 4 A recently published edited volume titled Lanting lunji(Collected essays on the Lanting xu) devotes all of its 539 pages to the discussion of a single masterpiece by Wang Xizhi: the Lanting xu(Preface to the Orchid Pavilion), done by Wang in honor of a famous scholarly gathering. 5In the West, Wang Xizhi has also been a perennial topic of scholarly endeavor. Lothar Ledderose's classic study of the impact of the formation of his canon on Wang's reputation links the establishment [End Page 516]of the classical tradition of Chinese calligraphy, of which Wang's canon was made the foundation, to the interpretation of Wang's art by the Song dynasty literatus Mi Fu (1051-1107), and Ledderose tells how this interpretation shaped the perception of the Wang canon by later generations. 6Stephen Goldberg's study of early Tang court calligraphy, 7Amy McNair's study of Yan Zhenqing (709-785), other essays published by McNair on Song calligraphy, and Peter Sturman's book on Mi Fu 8all deal in varying degrees with the subject of Wang Xizhi. In an important recent publication on calligraphy there is an essay, by Robert Harrist, Jr., on Wang Xizhi and the culture of Chinese calligraphy that represents an attempt to carry the research on Wang into the realm of cultural studies. 9In my own book on Fu Shan (1607-1684 or 1685) (which deals with the formation of the stele school of calligraphy, a calligraphic paradigm that in the Qing dynasty competed with the model-book school), how Wang Xizhi was received, parodied, and challenged in the seventeenth century is an important issue. 10A complete list of the publications on Wang Xizhi would be too long to be included in this short review. Unquestionably, Wang remains an unavoidable subject in any serious study of the art of Chinese calligraphy. Within this rich tradition of scholarship, Qi Xiaochun's new book A Study of Wang Xizhistands out as a new landmark in the field. Because the treatment of Chinese calligraphy as a modern academic discipline is still a relatively young endeavor, much remains to be done in the way of foundational studies. For this reason, Qi's book continues to treat many of the fundamental issues surrounding Wang Xizhi. Qi was trained in Kyoto, and his work, well ensconced in the Kyoto tradition of sinology, is characterized by meticulous textual examination and solid historical analysis. Abstract:Numerous researches are found on The Book of Songs as it is a Confucian classic.Since the Wanli Period of Ming Dynasty,there appeared many literary commentaries which had long been criticized as heresy by some scholars.These works,however,actually open up a new path for the study of The Book of Songs,meeting readers’aesthetic expectations as well as the imperial examination demand of that time.Hence,they were not only well accepted by those scholars who have vision but also became quite popular among the general public in the Ming and Qing Dynasties.These literary commentaries play a positive role in the research and the popularity of the ancient classic.As the valuable legacy of the Chinese literary theory,they are worth further study.

Abstract:In the flow of history, ancient writing mediums are akin to precious relics, carrying the legacy of millennia of wisdom and culture. A book titled "Script on Bamboo and Silk - Ancient Chinese Textual Records," published by Century Library in 2004, serves as a window through time, guiding us on a marvelous journey into the world of ancient Chinese writing mediums. The author of this book, Qian Cunxun, with his profound research and insightful perspectives, presents to us the historical trajectory of ancient writing mediums such as bamboo slips and silk fabric, exploring their significance and influence in the transmission of ancient culture. Ancient Chinese textual records form an extensive ocean, spanning from the earliest oracle bone script to later paper writing. Within this expanse, bamboo slips and silk fabric, as representatives of ancient writing mediums, uniquely radiate the brilliance of civilization. Bamboo slips once bore witness to the clash of ideas during the Warring States period and the competition between Legalist and Confucianist schools of thought. Abstract:Yang Zhishui's New Evidence for Descriptions of Names in the Book of Songs, Yao Xiao ou's The Three Odes in The Book of Songs and the Pre-Qin Ritual and Music Culture, and Li Shan's The Several Illustrated Pieces in Ya of The Book of Songs and the Partial Equivalence Discovered Hereafter between Ya and Song are, among other things, the key accomplishments in the studies of The Book of Songs in recent years. While they insist on the agreement between The Book of Songs and the ritual - music culture from different levels, these works also attempt to explore the actualities of The Three Hundred Pieces in The Book of Songs, and therefore are all aimed at their "primitiveness," burdened with the heavy load of tradition.

It unearths the historical significance of this art form, spanning from the Qing dynasty's Qianlong era to 1912, reaffirming its profound cultural roots within Yunnan. By identifying distinguished performers like Wenping Yang and Guoqiong Li, the research sheds light on the individual contributions that have shaped this traditional opera. Additionally, it observes the contemporary cultural adaptation known as "Lantern Opera Square Dance" in the Songming region, marking the opera's resilience and adaptability in the 21st century. Furthermore, the study traces the evolution of musical elements within Songming lantern opera, notably the shift from percussion to string music, providing valuable insights into its musical development. These findings collectively contribute to a richer understanding and preservation of Songming lantern opera, a vital component of Yunnan's cultural heritage.

Abstract:“Ji Chun Tai” is a collection of Huaben novels written by dissatisfied literati in Zhongjiang of Sichuan Province during the Guangxu Period of the Qing dynasty. It contains a large number of Sichuan Opera elements, which are mainly reflected in its structure and language. The structure of the 40 Huaben novels in “Ji Chun Tai” is divided into five parts, namely, the title, the beginning poem, the forewords, the main body and the ending, which is similar to the structure of the Sichuan Opera—opening words, the spoken parts, the libretto and the exit poetry. The language of “Ji Chun Tai” has many features of Sichuan Opera such as the use of Sichuan dialects, the singing of rhyme and libretto and the popularization of language.

Abstract:Research on the classic emendation is one of the important traditions of China's library science.However, the tradition has been disappearing slowly in recent years.The monograph of Zheng Qiao and Zhang Xuecheng's Broad-sensed Emendation Research written by Zhou Yujiao inherits the tradition very well.In the book, Zhou analyzes the content, character, advantages and disadvantages of Zheng Qiao and Zhang Xuecheng's emendation theory systematically and puts forward some new viewpoints.The main shortage of the book is that Zhou didn't study Chinese classic emendation from a macro perspective.
