Abstract:This paper examines the research assessment exercises in the U.S.,U.K.,Australia,and Holland to identify common evolving themes and development trends.The findings are that the exercises are becoming increasingly complex,the cost-benefit ratio is attracting more attention,and the governmental involvement is becoming more obvious.This author hopes that the findings will shed light on the construction of Chinese research assessment system.
