Abstract:The traditional Confucianism-centred Chinese culture not only shaped the general value system and social behaviour of traditional Chinese people but also dominated the parent-child relationship inside traditional Chinese families. More precisely, to justify the feudal lineage system and the respective ideology of "zunlao (respect the elders)" , the Confucian morality of filial piety that emphasizes "shunqin (obedience to one's parents)" or "wuwei (no resistance)" set the most basic behavioural pattern of traditional Chinese parent-child relationship. Furthermore, the morality of filial piety was then extended from parent-child relationship to teacher-pupil relationship and functioned to buttress seniority rules in general. This constitutes part of the reason why the feudalistic "filial piety" ——the centre of Confucian morality——was targeted by the "May-fourth" new cultural movement since 1919 onward.
