Abstract:High purity single crystal C-60 rods with uniform dimensions are synthesized by a rapid and facile approach which can be completed over a timescale of typically a few minutes. The morphology of the fullerene product has been characterized in detail by scanning electron microscopy, scanning transmission electron microscopy, and atomic force microscopy, demonstrating that the resulting materials are solid, hexagonal cross-sectioned rods with novel faceted tips. High resolution transmission electron microscopy investigations reveal that the rods are face-centered cubic packed single crystals. Vibrational and electronic spectroscopy studies provide compelling evidence that the rods are a van der Waals solid since the electronic structure of the component C-60 molecules is largely preserved. The structures obtained are found to possess novel optoelectronic properties exhibiting low energy absorption not reported in related structures and materials to date. Furthermore significant room temperature photoluminescence is obtained from the C-60 rods accompanied by a small blue shift of the spectra which is also observed for the first 'allowed' absorption transitions. Given their rapid synthesis, excellent purity, optical and charge transport properties these fullerene structures are expected to be a promising materials for nanoelectronic devices including thin film organic solar cells and photodetectors.

Abstract:New carbon forms that exhibit extraordinary physicochemical properties can be generated from nanostructured precursors under extreme pressure. Nevertheless, synthesis of such fascinating materials is often not well understood. That is the case of the C-60 precursor, with irreproducible results that impede further progress in the materials design. Here, the semiconducting amorphous carbon, having band gaps of 0.1-0.3 eV and the advantages of isotropic super hardness and superior toughness over single-crystal diamond and inorganic glasses, is produced from fullerene at high pressure and moderate temperatures. A systematic investigation of the structure and bonding evolution is carried out with complementary characterization methods, which helps to build a model of the transformation that can be used in further high-pressure/high-temperature (high p,T) synthesis of novel nano-carbon systems for advanced applications. The amorphous carbon materials produced have the potential of accomplishing the demanding optoelectronic applications that diamond and graphene cannot achieve.

Abstract:Metal–fullerene phase-separated nanocomposite films are reviewed with particular emphasis on the interfacial and charge-transfer interactions between the metal and C60. Interesting physical and structural properties are observed and some novel Ag–C60 and Cu–C60 nanostructures are described. The Figure shows the electron diffraction pattern of an Ag–C60 film prepared at room temperature.

Abstract:We have synthesized C60 in gram quantities using the Kratschmer and Huffman technique. The arc vaporization of a graphite rod was performed at 100 Torr in a static helium atmosphere. The yield by toluene extraction is 7% of the soot produced. C60 in the toluene extract was identified by mass, FTIR, and NMR spectroscopy. The result of analytical HPLC showed the content of C70 to be 13% in the toluene extract and 9% in the samples sublimated at 400-degrees-C. X-ray and electron diffraction studies show that C60 molecules form fcc or hcp crystals, depending on the substrate and sublimation conditions. A new phase with tetragonal symmetry has been found in the sublimated sample, presumably formed by C70 or larger C fullerenes.

Abstract:Amino acid esters react with C60 both thermally and photochemically to give different products. Refluxing a mixture of C60 and glycine ethyl ester afforded C60(Me2CHNHCHCOOEt) 1, whereas irradiation of the same mixture produced C60(EtOOCCHNHCHCOOEt) 2b as the main product. Photochemical reactions between C60 and sarcosine esters yielded two pyrrolidine derivatives C60(CH2N(Me)CHCOOR) 3 and C60(ROOCCHNHCHCOOR) 2 (R = Me, Et, CH2Ph). Compound 2a is also prepared from the photochemical reaction between C60 and iminodiacetic methyl ester in high yield. These ester derivatives are difficult to hydrolyze in excess mineral acids. The fullerene dicarboxylic acid C60(HOOCCHNHCHCOOH) 5 is synthesized from the tert-butyl derivative C60(tBuOOCCHNHCHCOOtBu) 4. A possible radical reaction mechanism for the photochemical reactions is proposed which involves an unprecedented C−N bond breakage.

Abstract:This article only deals with the topic of intense interest to us and to a considerable extent of our own experimental results on the synthesis,characterization and application of C60-con-taining functional polymers such as poly（N-vinylcarbazole）,polystyrene and polyacrylonitrile-based fullerene polymers.The results demonstrate that [60] fullerene can be directly incorporated into a variety of functional polymers by copolymer-ization or grafting,but also can be used to modify or improve the electronic,optical and physicochemical properties of polymers.Both the stereo-electroniceffect and the steric hindrance of C60 have an important influence on the structure and physicochemical properties of the parent polymer.

Abstract:The crystal structure and defect structures of C60 material have been studied by means of X-ray diffraction, high-resolution electron microscopy and electron diffraction. The diffraction measurements show that the C60 Crystal has the face-centered cubic (fcc) structure with lattice parameter a = 1.42 nm. High-resolution electron microscopy observations, combined with the analyses of selected area electron diffraction, indicate that the coherent twins situated in the {1 1 1} planes frequently appear in the C60 crystal. The disordered stacking along the [1 1 1] direction and other kinds of defects appearing in the new material have also been investigated. Upon in situ cooling and heating from 130 K to 700 K, the structural stability of the C60 Crystal has been observed.

Abstract:The microstructural features of the powder C60 material have been studied by using scanning microscopy, electron diffraction, and high resolution electron microscopy. Scanning electron microscopy observation reveals that the grains in the samples are packed by extensively disordered crystallites as well as amorphous granules. Electron diffraction measurements have identified that the crystals of C60 have two kinds of structure, one is face-centered-cubic (fcc) with unit cell parameter a = 1.41 nm, and the other has the hexagonal closest packed (hcp) structure with cell parameters a = 0.958 nm and c = 1.63 nm. High resolution electron microscopy as well as electron diffraction observations clearly show the random crystallites packing in the C60 grains.

Abstract:The allotropes of carbon have been the focus of attention in recent years. In this work, we reported a molecular allotrope of carbon, C60-endohedral: (C═C═C═C)@C60. The smallest vibrational frequency is 226.0 cm–1, which confirms that (C═C═C═C)@C60 is a minimum on the potential energy hypersurface. Its geometry, NMR diagram, IR spectrum, heat of formation, and bonding interactions have been predicted using the density functional theory (DFT) method at the B3LYP/6-311G(d) level of theory. Since there must be a large family of the fullerene–endohedral allotropes of carbon, the research studies on these allotropes of carbon will open an avenue for allotropes of carbon.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:Fullerene C60 is a ubiquitous material for application in organic electronics and nanotechnology, due to its desirable optoelectronic properties including good molecular orbital alignment with electron-rich donor materials, as well as high and isotropic charge carrier mobility. However, C60 possesses two limitations that hinder its integration into large-scale devices: (1) poor solubility in common organic solvents leading to expensive device processing, and (2) poor optical absorbance in the visible portion of the spectrum. Covalent functionalization has long been the standard for introducing structural tunability into molecular design, but non-covalent interactions have emerged as an alternative strategy to tailor C60-based materials, offering a versatile and tuneable alternative to novel functional materials and applications. In this work, we report a straightforward non-covalent functionalization of C60 with a branched polyethylene (BPE), which occurs spontaneously in dilute chloroform solution under ambient conditions. A detailed characterization strategy, based on UV-vis spectroscopy and gel-permeation chromatography was performed to verify and investigate the structure of the C60+BPE complex. Among others, our work reveals that the supramolecular complex has an order of magnitude higher molecular weight than its C60 and BPE constituents and points towards oxidation as the driving force behind complexation. The C60+BPE complex also possesses significantly broadened optical absorbance compared to unfunctionalized C60, extending further into the visible portion of the spectrum. This non-covalent approach presents an inexpensive route to address the shortcomings of C60 for electronic applications, situating the C60+BPE complex as a promising candidate for further investigation in organic electronic devices.

Abstract:Carbon structures with covalent bonds connecting C 60 molecules have been reported 1 – 3 , but their production methods typically result in very small amounts of sample, which restrict the detailed characterization and exploration necessary for potential applications. We report the gram-scale preparation of a new type of carbon, long-range ordered porous carbon (LOPC), from C 60 powder catalysed by α-Li 3 N at ambient pressure. LOPC consists of connected broken C 60 cages that maintain long-range periodicity, and has been characterized by X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, magic-angle spinning solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, aberration-corrected transmission electron microscopy and neutron scattering. Numerical simulations based on a neural network show that LOPC is a metastable structure produced during the transformation from fullerene-type to graphene-type carbons. At a lower temperature, shorter annealing time or by using less α-Li 3 N, a well-known polymerized C 60 crystal forms owing to the electron transfer from α-Li 3 N to C 60 . The carbon K-edge near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure shows a higher degree of delocalization of electrons in LOPC than in C 60 (s). The electrical conductivity is 1.17 × 10 −2 S cm −1 at room temperature, and conduction at T < 30 K appears to result from a combination of metallic-like transport over short distances punctuated by carrier hopping. The preparation of LOPC enables the discovery of other crystalline carbons starting from C 60 (s).

Abstract:A novel starlike C60(CH3)x(PAN)x copolymer was prepared by reaction of the living nButyl-terminated polyacrylonitrile (PAN) with C60, followed by a capping reaction with methyl iodine. Multiple PAN arms are attached to the C60 core. The characterization techniques employed are UV-vis, FT-IR, 13C NMR, TGA, XRD, ESR and SEM. This starlike polymer has a visibly yellow cast when compared with the unfunctionalized polymer. The chemical and physical properties of this polymer depend largely on the concentrations of the fullerene covalently bound to the polymer matrix and on the chain-length of PAN units attached to a C60 center. A qualitative comparison of the submicro-morphological structures of the copolymer and the pure nButyl-terminated poly-acrylonitrile is given.

Abstract:Addition of bulky C-60 moiety, a powerful electron acceptor (EA = 2.6-2.8 eV), to the poly(p-bromostyrene) (PBS) by a novel organometallic reaction considerably changes the chemical and physical properties of this polymer. The product obtained is a "charm-bracelet" non-crosslinked brownish yellow polymer which is easily soluble in many common organic solvents, and has a single glass transition temperature [134.0 degrees C vs. 83.2 degrees C for poly(p-bromostyrene)], this being congruent with its chemical structure. Covalent attachment of C-60 to the brominated polystyrene backbone is confirmed by a variety of techniques such as UV-VIS, FT-IR, TGA, DSC, SEM, ESR, GPC, and C-13-NMR. The results show that both the stereo-electronic effect and the steric hindrance of C-60 have an important influence on the structure and physical properties of polymer.
