Abstract:Large quadruped robots have shown potential for a wide range of everyday tasks due to their superior terrain adaptation. However, small-scale quadruped robots have limited payloads and thus cannot carry sufficient sensing and computational resources, which imposes limitations on their environmental adaptability. To address this challenge, we proposed an efficient closed-loop adaptive controller by simplified pose estimation and control strategy that utilizes only inertial measurement unit sensors, which drastically reduces the control computation. Accordingly, we integrated this control system into a small-scale quadruped robot, SQuRo, and conducted a series of experiments to verify the environmental adaptation performance of SQuRo. The results demonstrated that SQuRo has achieved 6 kinds of robust motion: slope stabilization motion, linear tracking motion, autonomous fall recovery motion, uneven terrain walk, slope walk, and obstacle avoidance. This work paves the way for small-scale quadruped robots to autonomously perform tasks in challenging environments.

Abstract:This paper introduces a quadruped robot with a wide range of motion for joints, which provides a basis for the robot to change its configuration. Two basic configurations are defined for the robot, including mammal-like configuration, which the front and hind knees point to each other and one reptile-like configuration with sprawling legs. Different control modes are configured to make the robot can switch between different configuration, which gives it ability to face different environments. For the mammal-like configuration, a parametric trotting gait is designed to traverse structural terrain level ground. For the reptile-like configuration, a turtle gait is designed to achieve robust locomotion on uneven terrain. Simulations and experiments show that the robot is capable to move on multiple terrains, including doorsills, slopes, stones. This paper demonstrates that through the design of leg foot configuration, some difficult tasks can be achieved in a rather simple way without using complicated control algorithms, which shows the potential of multi configuration in the application of quadruped robot.

Deep Reinforcement Learning Based Co-Optimization of Morphology and Gait for Small-Scale Legged Robot

Abstract:Small-scale legged robots have found widespread utilization in various industrial and biomedical applications due to their compact size and superior locomotion capabilities. Reducing the number of actuators is often desirable to decrease the robot's size and weight, which comes at the expense of the robot's workspace. Our study proposes a method to enhance the mobility of small-scale legged robots with limited degrees of actuators (DoAs) by co-optimizing both morphology parameters and control policy. The co-optimization is formulated as a bi-level optimization problem, where the control policy is designed using deep reinforcement learning algorithms and central pattern generators (CPGs) at the lower level. The inclusion of CPGs significantly speeds up training and enables the application of simulation results in real-world scenarios. At the upper level, morphology optimization is achieved through Bayesian optimization based on dual-networks. This approach eliminates the need to train a policy for each morphology candidate from scratch, leveraging previous experience to enhance efficiency. Through simulation and physical experiments, the effectiveness of our proposed approach is demonstrated, showcasing its ability to discover optimal morphology and gait for small-scale legged robots with limited DoAs. These findings have potential long-term impacts on small-scale legged robot design and locomotion control.

Abstract:The ability to modify morphology in response to environmental changes represents a highly advantageous feature in biological organisms, facilitating their adaptation to diverse environmental conditions. While some robots have the capability to modify their morphology by utilizing adaptive body parts, the practical implementation of morphological transformations in robotic systems is still relatively restricted. This limitation can be attributed, in part, to the intricate nature of achieving such transformations, which necessitates the integration of advanced materials, control systems, and design approaches. In nature, a range of morphology adaptation strategies is employed to achieve optimal performance and efficiency, such as those employed by crocodiles and alligators, who adjust their body posture depending on the speed and the surface they traverse on. Drawing inspiration from these biological examples, this paper introduces Adjustbot, a quadruped robot with an undulating body capable of adjusting its body posture. Its adaptive morphology allows it to traverse a wide range of terradynamically challenging surfaces and facilitates avoidance of collisions, navigation through narrow channels, obstacle traversal, and incline negotiation.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a quadruped robot with asymmetric bionic legs and a bionic spine with one degree of freedom (DOF). The robot’s forelimb has a joint configuration of 1T (translational joint) + 3R (rotational joint), while the hindlimb has a joint configuration of 4R. This paper provides a bionic mechanism design and verification method that applies reinforcement learning to the controller of the newly designed quadruped robot, which addresses the increasing complexity and number of joints. The control strategy presented in the paper is utilized to adapt the robot to rough and sloped terrain in both the simulated environment and the actual world. On the one hand, this study illustrates the adaptability of the new configuration robot to rough and sloped terrains and, on the other, that the suggested approach can efficiently verify the new bionic mechanism and speed up the process of mechanism design iterations.
