Abstract:This thesis is devoted to study the existence and properties of the root polynomial .Relationship between the root polynomial of a complex matrix and its m-th roots is also investigated. We establish the key theorem concerning necessary and sufficient conditions of the existence of the root polynomial .

Abstract:Finding all roots of a polynomial is basic and important work for numerical and algebraic calculation. We develop a method that only simple root is needed computing, either the roots are real or complex, Firstly, a Parallel algorithm for computing the greatest common factor of two polynomials is put forward; Secondly, a standard decomposing for a polynomial is given. Lastly, a method for converting the complex roots of a polynomial to the real roots of another polynomials is obtained.

Abstract:Two new theorems and two corollaries are presented which give sufficient conditions for a polynomial to have all its roots inside the unit circle. These results unify and extend certain earlier stability tests for discrete time systems. The significance of the new results is illustrated by a couple of examples.

Abstract:In a recent article, a complete discrimination system was given for a poly- nomial with symbolic/literal coecients. Such a system is a set of explicit expressions in terms of the coecients, which is sucient for determining the numbers and multiplici- ties of the real and imaginary roots. Sometimes, however, one wants to know the number of roots in a certain range, especially, in a interval. We give here an explicit criterion to determine the number of positive roots of a real polynomial, and hence an ecient algorithm is introduced for determining the number of roots in a general interval.

Abstract:We prove that any lower triangular and totally nonnegative matrix whose diagonal entries are all equal to one gives rise to a family real-rooted polynomials. This is used to develop a general theory for proving that chain polynomials of rank uniform posets are real-rooted. The results obtained extend and unify results of the first author, Brenti, Welker and Athanasiadis. In the process we define a notion of $h$-vectors for a large class of posets which generalize the $h$-vectors commonly associated to simplicial and cubical complexes. This answers a question of Alder on defining a $h$-vectors for $q$-posets. A consequence of our methods is a characterization of the convex hull of all characteristic polynomials of hyperplane arrangements of fixed dimension and over a fixed finite field. This may be seen as a refinement of the critical problem of Crapo and Rota. We also use the methods developed to answer an open problem posed by Forgács and Tran on the real-rootedness of polynomials arising from certain bivariate rational functions.

Abstract:For a tree <math>T</math>, the subtree polynomial of <math>T</math> is the generating polynomial for the number of subtrees of <math>T</math>. We show that the complex roots of the subtree polynomial are contained in the disk <math>z∈ℂ:|z|≤1+33</math>, and that <math>K1,3</math> is the only tree whose subtree polynomial has a root on the boundary. We also prove that the closure of the collection of all real roots of subtree polynomials contains the interval <math>[−2,−1]</math>, while the intervals <math>(−∞,−1−33)</math>, <math>[−1,0)</math>, and <math>(0,∞)</math> are root-free.

Abstract:Univariate polynomial root-finding is a classical subject, still important for modern computing. Frequently one seeks just the real roots of a real coefficient polynomial. They can be approximated at a low computational cost if the polynomial has no nonreal roots, but for high degree polynomials, nonreal roots are typically much more numerous than the real ones. The challenge is known for long time, and the subject has been intensively studied. The Boolean cost bounds for the refinement of the simple and isolated real roots have been decreased to nearly optimal, but the success has been more limited at the stage of the isolation of real roots. We obtain substantial progress by applying the algorithm of of 1982 by Schoenhage for the approximation of the root radii, that is, the distances of the roots to the origin. Namely we isolate the simple and well-conditioned real roots of a polynomial at the Boolean cost dominated by the nearly optimal bounds for the refinement of such roots. We also extend our algorithm to the isolation of complex, possibly multiple, roots and root clusters staying within the same (nearly optimal) asymptotic Boolean cost bound. Our numerical tests with benchmark polynomials performed with the IEEE standard double precision show that our nearly optimal real root-finder is practically promising. Our techniques are simple, and their power and application range may increase in combination with the known efficient methods.

Abstract:The fact that a real univariate polynomial misses some real roots is usually overcame by considering complex roots, but the price to pay for, is a complete lost of the sign structure that a set of real roots is endowed with (mutual position on the line, signs of the derivatives, etc...). In this paper we present real substitutes for these missing roots which keep sign properties and which extend of course the existing roots. Moreover these "virtual roots" are the values of semialgebraic continuous -- rather uniformly -- functions defined on the set of monic polynomials. We present some applications.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with the distribution in the complex plane of the roots of a polynomial sequence $\{W_n(x)\}_{n\ge0}$ given by a recursion $W_n(x)=aW_{n-1}(x)+(bx+c)W_{n-2}(x)$, with $W_0(x)=1$ and $W_1(x)=t(x-r)$, where $a>0$, $b>0$, and $c,t,r\in\mathbb{R}$. Our results include proof of the distinct-real-rootedness of every such polynomial $W_n(x)$, derivation of the best bound for the zero-set $\{x\mid W_n(x)=0\ \text{for some $n\ge1$}\}$, and determination of three precise limit points of this zero-set. Also, we give several applications from combinatorics and topological graph theory.

Abstract:A "Littlewood polynomial" is a polynomial whose coefficients are all 1 or -1. The set of all complex roots of all Littlewood polynomials exhibits many complicated, beautiful and fascinating patterns. Some fractal regions of this set closely resemble "dragon sets" formed by iterated function systems. A heuristic argument for this is known, but no precise theorem along these lines has been proved. Abstract:We prove two recent conjectures of Bourn and Erickson (2023) regarding the real-rootedness of a certain family of polynomials $N_n(t)$ as well as the sum of their coefficients. These polynomials arise as the numerators of generating functions in the context of the discrete one-dimensional earth mover's distance (EMD) and have also connection to the Wiener index of minuscule lattices. We also prove that the coefficients of $N_n(x)$ are asymptotically normal, the coefficient matrix of $N_n(x)$ is totally positive and the polynomial sequence $N_n(x)$'s is $x$-log-concave.

Abstract:We study the spectral polynomial of the Treibich-Verdier potential. Such spectral polynomial, which is a generalization of the classical Lame polynomial, plays fundamental roles in both the finite-gap theory and the ODE theory of Heun's equation. In this paper, we prove that all the roots of such spectral polynomial are real and distinct under some assumptions. The proof uses the classical concept of Sturm sequence and isomonodromic theories. We also prove an analogous result for a polynomial associated with a generalized Lame equation. Differently, our new approach is based on the viewpoint of the monodromy data.

Abstract:Polynomial functions are frequently used in mathematics and computer science. The zero-knowledge proof of the roots of a polynomial function is an important application of zero-knowledge, with both theoretical and practical significance. The zero-knowledge proof of the roots of a polynomial function based on the intractablity of computing the discrete logarithm to solve the multi discrete logarithm problem. The solution to the multi discrete logarithm problem is used as a building block to construct the zero-knowledge proof protocol for the roots of polynomial functions. A theoretical analysis shows that the protocol is secure and reliable.

Abstract:A finite linear combination of matrix elements of a finite dimensional representation $\pi$ of a Lie group $K$ is said to be a $\pi$-polynomial on $K$. If $K$ is compact then any $\pi$-polynomial uniquely extends to a holomorphic function on the complexification $K_\C$ of $K$. For a system of $n$ $\pi_i$-polynomials, where $n=\dim(K)$, we consider the proportion of real roots, that is the ratio of roots number to the number of roots in $K_\C$. It turns out that for growing representations $\pi_i$ and random system of $\pi_i$-polynomials, the expected proportion of real roots converges not to $0$, but to a nonzero constant. The limit is calculated in terms of the volumes of some compact convex sets that determine the growth of representation $\pi$. For a $1$-dimensional torus $K$ the limit is $1/\sqrt 3$.

Abstract:In 1970, B.A. Asner, Jr., proved that for a real quasi-stable polynomial, i.e., a polynomial whose zeros lie in the closed left half-plane of the complex plane, its finite Hurwitz matrix is totally nonnegative, i.e., all its minors are nonnegative, and that the converse statement is not true. In this work, we explain this phenomenon in detail, and provide necessary and sufficient conditions for a real polynomial to have a totally nonnegative finite Hurwitz matrix.
