Abstract:Let N be the set of all positive integers. A list assignment of a graph G is a function L:V(G)⟶2N that assigns each vertex v a list L(v) for all v∈V(G). We say that G is L-(2,1)-choosable if there exists a function ϕ such that ϕ(v)∈L(v) for all v∈V(G), |ϕ(u)−ϕ(v)|≥2 if u and v are adjacent, and |ϕ(u)−ϕ(v)|≥1 if u and v are at distance 2. The list-L(2,1)-labeling number λl(G) of G is the minimum k such that for every list assignment L={L(v):|L(v)|=k,v∈V(G)}, G is L-(2,1)-choosable. We prove that if G is a planar graph with girth g≥8 and its maximum degree Δ is large enough, then λl(G)≤Δ+3. There are graphs with large enough Δ and g≥8 having λl(G)=Δ+3.

Abstract:An L(d,1)-labeling of a graph G=(V,E) is a function f from the vertex set V(G) to the set of nonnegative integers such that the labels on adjacent vertices differ by at least d and the labels on vertices at distance two differ by at least one, where d≥1. The span of f is the difference between the largest and the smallest numbers in f(V). The λ1d-number of G, denoted by λ1d(G), is the minimum span over all L(d,1)-labelings of G. We prove that λ1d(X)≤2d+2, with equality if 1≤d≤4, for direct graph bundle X=Cm×σlCn and Cartesian graph bundle X=Cm□σlCn, if certain conditions are imposed on the lengths of the cycles and on the cyclic l-shift σl.

Abstract:An $L(d,1)$-labeling of a graph $G$ is an assignment of nonnegative integers to the vertices such that adjacent vertices receive labels that differ by at least $d$ and those at a distance of two receive labels that differ by at least one, where $d\geq 1$. Let $\lambda^d_1 (G)$ denote the least $\lambda$ such that $G$ admits an $L(d,1)$-labeling using labels from $\{0,1,\ldots , \lambda \}$. We prove that $\lambda^d_1(X)\leq 2d+2$ for certain direct graph bundle $X= C_m\times^{\sigma_\ell} C_n$ and certain Cartesian graph bundle $X= C_m\Box^{\sigma_\ell} C_n$, where $\sigma_\ell$ is a cyclic $\ell$-shift, with equality if $1\leq d\leq 4$.

An L (2, 1)-labeling of must satisfy two conditions: adjacent vertices in should get labels which differ by at least two, and vertices at a distance of two from each other should get distinct labels. The -number of , denoted by , represents the smallest positive integer for which an L (2, 1)-labeling exists, the vertices of are provided labels from the set . Let be a zero-divisor graph of a finite commutative ring R with unity. In , vertices represent zero-divisors of R , and two vertices x and y are adjacent if and only if in R . The methodology of the research involves a detailed investigation into the structural aspects of zero-divisor graphs associated with specific classes of local and mixed rings, such as , , and . This exploration leads us to compute the exact value of L (2, 1)-labeling number of these graphs.

We prove that if $X= C_m\boxtimes^{\sigma_\ell} C_{n}$ is a direct graph bundle with fiber $C_{n}$ and base $C_m$, $n$ is a multiple of 11 and $\ell$ has a form of $\ell =[11k+(-1)^a 4m]\mod n$ or of $\ell =[11k+(-1)^a 3m]\mod n$, where $a\in \{1,2\}$ and $k\in \ZZ$, then $\lambda (X)=10$.

Abstract:Given a graph G=(V,E) of maximum degree Δ, denoting by d(x,y) the distance in G between nodes x,y∈V , an L(3,2,1) -labeling of G is an assignment l from V to the set of non-negative integers such that |l(x)−l(y)|≥3 if x and y are adjacent, |l(x)−l(y)|≥2 if d(x,y)=2 , and |l(x)−l(y)|≥1 if d(x,y)=3 , for all x and y in V . The L(3,2,1) -number λ(G) is the smallest positive integer such that G admits an L(3,2,1) -labeling with labels from {0,1,...,λ(G)} . In this paper, the L(3,2,1) -number of certain planar graphs is determined, proving that it is linear in Δ, although the general upper bound for the L(3,2,1) -number of planar graphs is quadratic in Δ.

Winding number and circular 4-coloring of signed graphs

Abstract:Concerning the recent notion of circular chromatic number of signed graphs, for each given integer $k$ we introduce two signed bipartite graphs, each on $2k^2-k+1$ vertices, having shortest negative cycle of length $2k$, and the circular chromatic number 4. Each of the construction can be viewed as a bipartite analogue of the generalized Mycielski graphs on odd cycles, $M_{\ell}(C_{2k+1})$. In the course of proving our result, we also obtain a simple proof of the fact that $M_{\ell}(C_{2k+1})$ and some similar quadrangulations of the projective plane have circular chromatic number 4. These proofs have the advantage that they illuminate, in an elementary manner, the strong relation between algebraic topology and graph coloring problems.

Abstract:Given a graph G , an L(3,2,1) -labeling of G is an assignment f of non-negative integers (labels) to the vertices of G such that |f(u)−f(v)|≥4−i if dist(u,v)=i ( i = 1, 2, 3). For a non-negative integer k , a k - L(3,2,1) -labeling is an L(3,2,1) -labeling such that no label is greater than k . The L(3,2,1) -labeling number of G , denoted by λ3,2,1(G) , is the smallest number k such that G has a k - L(3,2,1) -labeling. Chia proved that the L(3,2,1) -labeling number of a tree T with maximum degree Δ can have one of three values: 2Δ+1, 2Δ+2 and 2Δ+3 . This paper gives some sufficient conditions for λ3,2,1(T)≥2Δ+2 and λ3,2,1(T)=2Δ+3 , respectively. As a result, the L(3,2,1) -labeling numbers of complete m -ary trees, spiders and banana trees are completely determined.

Abstract:Let G be a graph with vertex set V(G) and edge set E(G), and f be a 0−1 labeling of E(G) so that the absolute difference in the number of edges labeled 1 and 0 is no more than one. Call such a labeling f edge-friendly. We say an edge-friendly labeling induces a partial vertex labeling if vertices which are incident to more edges labeled 1 than 0, are labeled 1, and vertices which are incident to more edges labeled 0 than 1, are labeled 0. Vertices that are incident to an equal number of edges of both labels we call unlabeled. Call a procedure on a labeled graph a label switching algorithm if it consists of pairwise switches of labels. Given an edge-friendly labeling of Kn, we show a label switching algorithm producing an edge-friendly relabeling of Kn such that all the vertices are labeled. We call such a labeling opinionated.

Labeling regions in deformations of graphical arrangements

Abstract:Combining a variant of the Farkas lemma with the Flow Decomposition Theorem we show that the regions of any deformation of a graphical arrangement may be bijectively labeled with a set of weighted digraphs containing directed cycles of negative weight only. Bounded regions correspond to strongly connected digraphs. The study of the resulting labelings allows us to add the omitted details in Stanley's proof on the injectivity of the Stanley-Pak labeling of the regions of the extended Shi arrangement and to introduce a new labeling of the regions in the $a$-Catalan arrangement. We also point out that Athanasiadis-Linusson labelings may be used to directly count regions in a class of arrangements properly containing the extended Shi arrangement and the Fuss-Catalan arrangement.

Abstract:A distance labeling scheme is an assignments of labels, that is binary strings, to all nodes of a graph, so that the distance between any two nodes can be computed from their labels and the labels are as short as possible. A major open problem is to determine the complexity of distance labeling in unweighted and undirected planar graphs. It is known that, in such a graph on $n$ nodes, some labels must consist of $\Omega(n^{1/3})$ bits, but the best known labeling scheme uses labels of length $O(\sqrt{n}\log n)$ [Gavoille, Peleg, Pérennes, and Raz, J. Algorithms, 2004]. We show that, in fact, labels of length $O(\sqrt{n})$ are enough.

Distance Labeling for Families of Cycles

Abstract:For an arbitrary finite family of graphs, the distance labeling problem asks to assign labels to all nodes of every graph in the family in a way that allows one to recover the distance between any two nodes of any graph from their labels. The main goal is to minimize the number of unique labels used. We study this problem for the families $\mathcal{C}_n$ consisting of cycles of all lengths between 3 and $n$. We observe that the exact solution for directed cycles is straightforward and focus on the undirected case. We design a labeling scheme requiring $\frac{n\sqrt{n}}{\sqrt{6}}+O(n)$ labels, which is almost twice less than is required by the earlier known scheme. Using the computer search, we find an optimal labeling for each $n\le 17$, showing that our scheme gives the results that are very close to the optimum.
