Abstract:Many authors discussed the interpolation mechanism of fuzzy logic system applied in control. The input and output of fuzzy control system are always restrained in (fuzzy) numbers-associated with fuzzification and defuzzification procedure. In artificial intelligence area we need use common fuzzy sets to represent vague and fuzzy concept. In this paper, we propose a "local relation mapping" theory, which is a corresponding result of interpolation mechanism of fuzzy logical system without fuzzification and defuzzification. This local relation mapping property holds in Mamdani algorithm (Max-Min fuzzy reasoning model). We find that each CRI fuzzy reasoning method based on the multi-valued logic implication operator has an approximate Mamdani algorithm. The fuzzy relation matrix of CRI fuzzy inference method based on the multivalued logic implication operator has an enveloping surface of Mamdani algorithm. So most CRI fuzzy reasoning methods have local relation mapping property approximately

Abstract:In this paper, the perturbation analysis is presented for a class of fuzzy linear systems which can be solved by an embedding method. We deduce the nonlinear upper perturbation bounds for the solutions, and discuss the normwise, mixed and componentwise condition numbers. The results show how the perturbations of the coefficient matrix and the right-hand vector impact the solutions to fuzzy linear systems.

Abstract:With the probability rules and the degree of coverage of elements in the partition set, and the combination of the Fuzzy Set Theory and Rough Set Theory, a new extension of Fuzzy Rough Set theory was proposed. It is defined the maximum of Rough Set membership function, the minimum of Rough Set membership function, the average of Rough Set membership function, the upper minimum of Rough Set membership function and the lower maximum of Rough Set membership function. The properties of the extension for the Rough Set membership functions are also given. This made Fuzzy Set Theory and Rough Set Theory complemented each other and provided a new way to deal with incomplete data.

Abstract:Reasoning, the most important human brain operation, is charactrized by a degree fuzziness. In the present paper we construct a fuzzy model for the reasoning process giving through the calculation of the possibilities of all possible individuals' profiles a quantitative/qualitative view of their behaviour during the above process and we use the centroid defuzzification technique for measuring the reasoning skills. We also present a number of classroom experiments illustrating our results in practice.

Abstract:Purpose For eigenvalue problems containing uncertain inputs characterized by fuzzy basic parameters, first-order perturbation methods have been developed to extract eigen-solutions, but either the result accuracy or the computational efficiency of these methods is less satisfactory. This paper presents an efficient method for estimation of fuzzy eigenvalues with high accuracy. Design/methodology/approach Based on the first order derivatives of eigenvalues and modes with respect to the fuzzy basic parameters, expressions of the second order derivatives of eigenvalues are formulated. Then a second-order perturbation method is introduced to provide more accurate fuzzy eigenvalue solutions. Only one eigenvalue solution is sought for the perturbed formulation, and quadratic programming is performed to simplify the alpha-level optimization. Findings Fuzzy natural frequencies and buckling loads of some structures are estimated with good accuracy, illustrating the high computational efficiency of the proposed method. Originality/value Up to the second order derivatives of the eigenvalues with respect to the basic parameters are represented in functional forms, which are used to introduce a second-order perturbation method for treatment of fuzzy eigenvalue problems. The corresponding alpha-level optimization is thus simplified into quadratic programming. The proposed method provides much more accurate interval solutions at alpha-cuts for the membership functions of fuzzy eigenvalues. Analogously, third- and higher-order perturbation methods can be developed for more stringent accuracy demands or for the treatment of stronger nonlinearity. The present work can be applied to realistic structural analysis in civil engineering, especially for those structures made of dispersed materials such as concrete and soil.

Abstract:In this paper, the theoretical foundation of fuzzy reasoning is analyzed, and the idea that the fuzzy transform given in the fuzzy reasoning method should be continuous with respect to a certain fuzzy distance is proposed. Also, the fuzzy transforms given in the two fuzzy reasoning methods, the Mamdani method and the III method, are proved to be continuous. Based on the continuity of the fuzzy transform, the approximation theorem of the continuous fuzzy number transform is proven. Then, on the basis of the approximation theorem, a simple fuzzy number transform is constructed in order to implement the fuzzy reasoning based on multiple rules. At last, the fuzzy reasoning based on multiple rules implemented by a simple fuzzy number transform is applied to machine scheduling problems, and numerical computational results of different scale scheduling problems with the objective of minimizing the total number of tardy jobs show that it is more effective than usual heuristics based on rules, and in the computational time it has the obvious advantage over the reasoning by fuzzy rules directly.

Abstract:Fuzzy reasoning gathered significant attention for its extensive utility since it was introduced. This work puts emphasis on its theoretical aspects and presents a framework for fuzzy logic reasoning considering time-varying uncertainty based on robust control theory. The proposed framework is built upon one basic setting, the Fundamental Axiom of Reasoning, which provides a criterion to demonstrate the validness of a chain reasoning by analytically quantifying its truth value based on multiple fuzzy implication models. The fuzzy reasoning system is casted to a dynamic system where the reasoning process is proactively controlled without violating the basic setting. The time-varying uncertainty in system variables or parameters is addressed by involving the delicately designed robust control. Furthermore, the diverse ways in which time-varying uncertainty impacts the system are also discussed, from modeling stage to control stage. Finally, an automated speed control problem with time-varying uncertainty is considered to demonstrate how to apply the proposed framework.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the fuzzy reasoning based on a new fuzzy rough set. First, we define a broad family of new lower and upper approximation operators of fuzzy sets between different universes using a set of axioms. Then, based on the approximation operators above, we propose the fuzzy reasoning based on the new fuzzy rough set. By means of the above fuzzy reasoning based on the new fuzzy rough set, for a given premise, we can obtain the fuzzy reasoning consequence expressed by the fuzzy interval constructed by the above two approximations of fuzzy sets. Furthermore, through the defuzzification of the lower and upper approximations, we can get the corresponding two values constructing the interval used as the fuzzy reasoning consequence after defuzzification. Then, from the above interval, a suitable value can be selected as the final reasoning consequence so that some special constraints are satisfied as possibly. At last, we apply the fuzzy reasoning based on the new fuzzy rough set to the scheduling problems, and numerical computational results show that the fuzzy reasoning based on the new fuzzy rough set is more suitable for the scheduling problems compared with the fuzzy reasoning based on the CRI method and the III method.

Abstract:In a decision-making process, we may face a hybrid environment where linguistic and frequent imprecision nature coexists. The problem of frequent imprecision can be solved by probability theory, while the problem of linguistic imprecision can be tackled by possibility theory. Therefore, to solve this hybrid decision-making problem, it is necessary to combine both theories effectively. In this paper, we restrict our attention to this hybrid decision-making problem, where the input data are imprecise and described by fuzzy random variables. Fuzzy random variable is a mapping from a probability space to a collection of fuzzy variables, it is an appropriate tool to deal with twofold uncertainty with fuzziness and randomness in an optimization framework. The purpose of this paper is to present reasonable chances of a fuzzy random event characterized by fuzzy random variables so that they can connect with the expected value operators of a fuzzy random variable via Choquet integrals, just like the relation between the probability of a random event and the mathematical expectation of a random variable, and that between the credibility of a fuzzy event and the expected value operator of a fuzzy variable. Toward that end, we take fuzzy measure and fuzzy integral theory as our research tool, and present three kinds of mean chances of a fuzzy random event via Choquet integrals. After discussing the duality of the mean chances, we use the mean chances to define the expected value operators of a fuzzy random variable via Choquet integrals. To show the reasonableness of the mean chance approach, we prove the expected value operators defined in this paper coincide with those presented in our previous work. Using the mean chances, we present a new class of fuzzy random minimum-risk problems, where the objective and the constraints are all defined by the mean chances. To solve general fuzzy random minimum-risk optimization problems, a hybrid intelligent algorithm, which integrates fuzzy random simulations, genetic algorithm and neural network, is designed, and its feasibility and effectiveness are illustrated by numerical examples. Abstract:By the development of Semantic Web, increasing de- mands for vague information representation have triggered a mass of theoretical and applied researches of fuzzy ontologies, whose main logical infrastructures are fuzzy description logics. However, cur- rent tableau algorithms can not supply complete reasoning support within fuzzy ontology: reasoning with general TBox is still a dif- ficult problem in fuzzy description logics. The main trouble is that fuzzy description logics adopt fuzzy models with continuous but not discrete membership degrees. In this paper, we propose a novel se- mantical discretization to discretize membership degrees in fuzzy description logic FSHIN . Based on this discretization, we design discrete tableau algorithms to achieve reasoning with general TBox.

Abstract:Adversarial decision making is aimed at determining optimal strategies against an adversarial and adaptive opponent. One defense against this intrusion into our cognitive process is to make decisions that are intended to confuse the observer, although our rewards can be diminished.In this work, we propose a mathematical framework that allows studying the balance between inducing confusion and attaining payoff in adversarial decision making.Computational experiments are performed to evaluate how the payoff and the number of correct predictions are affected by the strategies selected for each participant and by the number of decisions available.

Abstract:Fuzzy logic, especially fuzzy reasoning, has been widely used in many real-world applications for its tremendous practical value. This paper mainly focuses on a new theoretical principle of fuzzy logic, fuzzy reasoning, and its applications. It starts with enunciating a novel foundation: the Fundamental Axiom of Reasoning. We then propose a practical framework, which enables the Fundamental Axiom of Reasoning to be applied to various applications. This framework is divided into discrete case and continuous case. In the discrete case, we first solve the sorites paradox. We then proceed to a pattern recognition problem. So far, these are all passive approach in that the Fundamental Axiom of Reasoning is used as is to measure if the reasoning is valid. In the continuous case, we proceed to actively designing the reasoning so that the Fundamental Axiom of Reasoning is always guaranteed through Lyapunov stability approaches. This is formulated as a control-theoretic task. The problem of reasoning is converted to a control design one. This is then applied to a vehicle following problem. Through theoretical analysis and practical demonstrations, we show how the Fundamental Axiom of Reasoning can be conceptualized, articulated, and formalized in fuzzy reasoning.

Abstract:The methodology of fuzzy reasoning has been shown to be very useful technology for modeling complex nonlinear systems. However, the most commonly used method for reasoning with fuzzy systems models, the Mamdani-Zadeh paradigm, faces many criticisms, particularly from the probability community. A new mathematical representation of linguistic concepts is presented in this paper. With the new model of normal compatibility clouds and a virtual rule engine, a novel uncertainty reasoning technology is proposed. It not only serves as a foundation of linguistic control, but also integrating fuzziness and randomness in an inseparable way. A case study is given to clean up many doubts raised in the debate between fuzzy theory and probability theory researchers, and to give a good interpretation of the Mamdani-Zadeh operations for the defuzzification strategy as well. The architecture of such a controller shows the advantages in hardware implementations.

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce a membership function used to form the fuzzy Mandelbric set and investigate the structural effects of additive and multiplicative dynamic noises on it. The newly defined membership function of this fuzzy set and its perturbations is a generalization of the indicator function for the classical Mandelbric set. We present an algorithm for detecting each complex number's fuzzy membership degree. Through the use of the membership degrees of each complex number and experimental mathematics based on the visualizations of a variety of versions by utilizing computer-aided design, we gain a deep foresight for the structure characteristics of the additive and multiplicative perturbed fuzzy Mandelbric sets. Our novel approach allows us to identify the symmetry states of the Mandelbric set and its perturbations by the membership degrees of complex numbers, unlike the existing methods described in the literature.

Abstract:This paper presents an original method of fuzzy approximate reasoning that can open a new direction of research in the uncertainty inference of Artificial Intelligence(AI) and Computational Intelligence(CI). Fuzzy modus ponens (FMP) and fuzzy modus tollens(FMT) are two fundamental and basic models of general fuzzy approximate reasoning in various fuzzy systems. And the reductive property is one of the essential and important properties in the approximate reasoning theory and it is a lot of applications. This paper suggests a kind of extended distance measure (EDM) based approximate reasoning method in the single input single output(SISO) fuzzy system with discrete fuzzy set vectors of different dimensions. The EDM based fuzzy approximate reasoning method is consists of two part, i.e., FMP-EDM and FMT-EDM. The distance measure based fuzzy reasoning method that the dimension of the antecedent discrete fuzzy set is equal to one of the consequent discrete fuzzy set has already solved in other paper. In this paper discrete fuzzy set vectors of different dimensions mean that the dimension of the antecedent discrete fuzzy set differs from one of the consequent discrete fuzzy set in the SISO fuzzy system. That is, this paper is based on EDM. The experimental results highlight that the proposed approximate reasoning method is comparatively clear and effective with respect to the reductive property, and in accordance with human thinking than existing fuzzy reasoning methods.

Abstract:In this paper, we present a theoretical framework of fuzzy reasoning model under quotient space structure. It consists of (1) introducing quotient space structure into fuzzy sets, i.e., constructing fuzzy set representations of different grain-size spaces and their relationships; (2) introducing the concept of fuzzy sets into quotient space theory, i.e., introducing fuzzy equivalence relation and discussing its corresponding reasoning in different grain-size spaces; and (3) discussing the relationship and transformation among different granular computing methodologies. The framework proposed is aimed to combine two powerful abilities in order to enhance the efficiency of fuzzy reasoning: one is the ability of computing with words based on fuzzy set methodology, the other is the ability of hierarchical problem solving based on quotient space approach.

Abstract:To deal with uncertainty in reasoning, interval-valued logic has been developed. But uniform intervals cannot capture the difference in degrees of belief for different values in the interval. To salvage the problem triangular and trapezoidal fuzzy numbers are used as the set of truth values along with traditional intervals. Preorder-based truth and knowledge ordering are defined over the set of fuzzy numbers defined over $[0,1]$. Based on this enhanced set of epistemic states, an answer set framework is developed, with properly defined logical connectives. This type of framework is efficient in knowledge representation and reasoning with vague and uncertain information under nonmonotonic environment where rules may posses exceptions.
