Abstract:In order to promote ACM SIGSPATIAL and corresponding research area in China, and encourage collaboration between SIGSPATIAL researchers in China and researchers worldwide, in Oct. 2009, we have established ACM SIGSPATIAL China chapter, with the strong support of SIGSPATIAL executive committee. Till now, we have 31 professional members in SIGSPATIAL China. They come from Chinese universities/research institutes such as Wuhan University, Renmin University, University of Science and Technology of China, Zhejiang University, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and industry labs such as Microsoft Research Asia and Nokia Research China.

In order to promote ACM SIGSPATIAL and the corresponding research area in China, and encourage collaboration between SIGSPATIAL researchers in China and researchers worldwide, in late September 2009, Wuhan University, Renmin University and Microsoft Research Asia worked together to submit an application for establishing the ACM SIGSPATIAL China Chapter. The application was approved by the SIGSPATIAL Executive Committee in late October 2009.

Abstract:With the announcement of open information policy by the Chinese government, there has been lots of development in government statistics, Census data, and GIS data. That information provides rich reference for regional analysis in China. The primary challenges under rapid data growth include how to efficiently integrate those space-time data, provide methodology for different research targets, and promote their applications in different fields. This report will present some recent developments of spatial intelligence technologies for spatial data integration, data analysis, as well as their applications. The report will introduce the newly developed spatial explorer (China Geo-Explorer) as a joint effort by the University of Michigan China Data Center and Wuhan University. It will demonstrate how space-time data of different formats and sources can be integrated, visualized, analyzed and reported in a web based system. Some applications in disaster assessment, environment and health, cultural and religious studies will be discussed for China and global studies.

Abstract:More and more researchers from different fields find it essential to combine GIS data to do survey data analysis and multi-disciplinary studies. Spatial intelligence allows efficient data integration for spatial and non-spatial data, quick and accurate location analysis and spatial assessment. In this paper, we present an updated version of China Geo-Explorer, a web based platform for spatial intelligence, which integrates multi-source spatial data and non-spatial data from various fields including demography, business and religion, etc. The platform interacts with users through many flexible spatial selection methods to generate time-saving, easy-to-use, and pre-formatted reports as well as customized reports, provides different kinds of observations points on fields like economy and hydrology for spatial selection and time-series data visualization, comparison and analysis, and creates dynamic theme map on demand. Finally we discuss two case studies on business intelligence and multi-disciplinary studies as applications of the platform.

Abstract:With the advent of Web 2.0, new technologies for spatial data service, and demanding needs in spatial data sharing, and advanced analysis, both geographic information system and spatial statistics are facing challenges from different disciplines never met before. Due to their mutual beneficial roles in highlevel decision making, it's quite essential to make research on the integration of Web 2.0 based WebGIS with spatial statistics. Thus, to promote spatial intelligence, this study made an example of this integration by incorporating spatial cluster analysis seamlessly into China Geo-Explorer platform, a web-based platform for spatial & aspatial data integration and analysis. This integration made good use of benefits of WebGIS and spatial statistics, through data sharing, mapping and reporting, enabling spatial clusters identification with exploratory analysis and post-discovering knowledge from results of spatial pattern analysis. Some application scenario was introduced to demonstrate its great potential in spatial decision making.

Abstract:Scholars, policy makers, and journalists are requesting comprehensive information about the geographic locations, religious services, and socio-economic environments of Chinese religions. As an effort to promote international collaborations on spatial studies of Chinese religions and society, a spatial information network for the studies of Christianity in China has been established by a group of scholars from several institutions in the U.S. and China. The objectives of the project include: (1) to establish a centralized information infrastructure; (2) to provide effective tools and technical support for interested users through spatial intelligence information technology; (3) to create an online research forum designed to promote information sharing and improve understanding of Christianity in China; and (4) to render comprehensive information about teaching, learning, and training on the studies of Chinese Christianity. This paper will present some results from the project, including an online spatial information platform, which will integrate data, methodology and research references for the studies of Chinese Christianity. This paper will discuss the information structure, methodology, and technology applied in this system. The system allows easy access to comprehensive demographic, economic, and religious information in China as well as some online tools for spatial data analysis. It will demonstrate how space-time data of different formats and sources can be integrated, visualized, and reported in a web based system for religious studies. Some case studies for Chinese religions and future directions will be discussed.

Abstract:The space-time behavior approach has become an influential methodology in Chinese urban geography. In this article I provide an overview of space-time behavior research in China, focusing on theoretical and methodological progress as well as key themes and findings from recent empirical studies. I argue that space-time behavior research offers a new perspective for understanding the complexity and diversity of human behavior patterns during the large-scale spatial and institutional transition in Chinese cities. Yet although Chinese urban geographers have made more methodological progress in data collection and analytic tools, theoretical development still lags behind compared to the space-time behavior approach in the West. The article concludes by discussing key theoretical and practical challenges for future development of space-time activity research in China.
Spatially Explicit Assessment of Social Vulnerability in Coastal China

Abstract:Social vulnerability assessment has been recognized as a reliable and effective measure for informing coastal hazard management. Although significant advances have been made in the study of social vulnerability for over two decades, China’s social vulnerability profiles are mainly based on administrative unit. Consequently, no detailed distribution is provided, and the capability to diagnose human risks is hindered. In this study, we established a social vulnerability index (SoVI) in 2000 and 2010 at a spatial resolution of 250 m for China’s coastal zone by combining the potential exposure index (PEI) and social resilience index (SRI). The PEI with a 250 m resolution was obtained by fitting the census data and multisource remote sensing data in random forest model. The county-level SRI was evaluated through principal component analysis based on 33 socioeconomic variables. For identifying the spatiotemporal change, we used global and local Moran’s I to map clusters of SoVI and its percent change in the decade. The results suggest the following: (1) Counties in the Yangtze River Delta, Pearl River Delta, and eastern Guangzhou, except several small hot spots, exhibited the most vulnerability, especially in urban areas, whereas those in Hainan and southern Liaoning presented the least vulnerability. (2) Notable increases were emphasized in Tianjin, Yangtze River Delta, and Pearl River Delta. The spatiotemporal variation and heterogeneity in social vulnerability obtained through this analysis will provide a scientific basis to decision-makers to focus risk mitigation effort.

Abstract:This report focuses on spatial data intelligent large models, delving into the principles, methods, and cutting-edge applications of these models. It provides an in-depth discussion on the definition, development history, current status, and trends of spatial data intelligent large models, as well as the challenges they face. The report systematically elucidates the key technologies of spatial data intelligent large models and their applications in urban environments, aerospace remote sensing, geography, transportation, and other scenarios. Additionally, it summarizes the latest application cases of spatial data intelligent large models in themes such as urban development, multimodal systems, remote sensing, smart transportation, and resource environments. Finally, the report concludes with an overview and outlook on the development prospects of spatial data intelligent large models.

Abstract:Assessing urban environments is crucial for promoting sustainable urban development. However, current studies often lack a dynamic processes-oriented perspective and are geographically limited. This study utilizes the Comprehensive Evaluation Index (CEI), derived from multi-source data, to evaluate the environmental conditions of the 36 Chinese metropolitan areas from 2000 to 2021 and captures spatiotemporal non-stationarity through trend analysis and the Dynamic Time Warping algorithm. The results indicate a tendency of deterioration followed by improvement in the urban environment, with an inflection point in 2013. Initially, the environmental conditions in the core areas lagged behind those in the expanded areas, but eventually, the core areas surpassed the expanded areas. The trajectory of environmental change displays regional variations and spatial clustering. The contribution of surface fine particulate matter began to decline around 2013, while land surface temperature and vegetation coverage emerged as the primary contributors. Our object-oriented management approach can provide directional guidance for future urban environmental management. This study contributes to promoting sustainable development.

Abstract:Geospatial Artificial Intelligence (GeoAI) is an interdisciplinary field enjoying tremendous adoption. However, the efficient design and implementation of GeoAI systems face many open challenges. This is mainly due to the lack of non-standardized approaches to artificial intelligence tool development, inadequate platforms, and a lack of multidisciplinary engagements, which all motivate domain experts to seek a shared stage with scientists and engineers to solve problems of significant impact on society. Since its inception in 2017, the GeoAI series of workshops has been co-located with the Association for Computing Machinery International Conference on Advances in Geographic Information Systems. The workshop series has fostered a nexus for geoscientists, computer scientists, engineers, entrepreneurs, and decision-makers, from academia, industry, and government to engage in artificial intelligence, spatiotemporal data computing, and geospatial data science research, motivated by various challenges. In this article, we revisit and discuss the state of GeoAI open research directions, the recent developments, and an emerging agenda calling for a continued cross-disciplinary community engagement.

Abstract:As a unique perspective for understanding the complex relationships between human activities and urban environments in space and time,the space-time behavior approach has become an influential methodology in China's urban geography since 1990s.Aiming at promoting communications and exchanges among urban geographers in different contexts,this article provides a critical review of space-time behavior research in China.Ever since time geography and activity-based model were introduced to China's urban geography,space-time behavior research in China has benefited from the fruitful theoretical and methodological progress made in Western geographical research.On one hand,GPS and mobile phone tracking technologies have been integrated into activity-diary surveys to collect more accurate and real-time activity-travel information.On the other hand,advanced statistical models and geocomputational and 3D geovisualization methods have been adopted in more recent empirical literature in China.Yet,while Chinese urban geographers have made more methodological progress in data collection and analytic tools thanks to the development of GPS and GIS technology,theoretical development still lags behind.However,space-time behavior research in China,with planning-oriented characteristics,offers a unique framework for understanding urban transformation in China.It has become a new perspective for understanding the complexity and diversity of human behavior patterns in the transitional cities in China.In other words,space-time behavior research tries to describe and interpret urban spatial structures and spatial reconstructing in urban China from the perspective of individuals' behaviors.The impacts of danwei-based urban spatial organization and its disappearance,as well as the impacts of suburbanization on individuals' daily activities,have been studied carefully.Especially,this approach emphazes how spatial restructuring impact individuals' daily life experiences,which in turn are related to the issues such as life quality,social equity and environmental sustainability.Urban geographers in China have begun to apply the space-time activity approach to the socio-spatial issues in the cities by focusing on daily-activity experiences of low SES(socioeconomic status) populations.And the development of the low-carbon city movement in China has prompted the application of the space-time behavior approach in understanding the impacts of land use characteristics on travel-related carbon-dioxide emissions through individuals' travel decisions.At the same time,planning practices based on the space-time behavior approach is carried out in urban transportation,tourism,and urban planning.The space-time behavior approach has become a very useful human-oriented approach to land use and transportation planning in China.The article concludes by discussing key theoretical and practical challenges for future development of space-time activity research in China.

Abstract:With great volumes of geospatial data and data from different fields distributed across Internet, the sharing and utilization of these data have presented great challenges for research and application in geographical information science. Moreover, the new concepts and technologies of Web 2.0 represent new user demands for user-oriented interaction, and collaboration. There is an emerging need to provide users with an integrated tool for spatial exploration, and spatial analysis in supporting common advanced needs from multiple disciples of research and application. This paper introduced China geo-explorer - a new Web based platform with advanced functions for spatial data integration, data selection, data analysis, and data service for research, education and decision support as a joint effort by the China Data Center at the University of Michigan, Wuhan University and All China Marketing Research. It demonstrated how space-time data of different formats and sources can be integrated, visualized, and reported in a Web based system. Due to its flexibility in architecture, interoperability in data sharing, rich experience in user interaction, and deeper consideration in promoting spatial analysis, it was suitable for kinds of applications from various domains. Some case studies in disaster assessment, environment, health, and regional development as the application of the system were discussed.

Abstract:The chapter provides a historical perspective on recent methodological developments and theoretical insights in the theme of spatial analysis and simulation. The research questions and how they developed are first described. Contributions of different countries to this theme are then assessed in light of bibliometric results, followed by the analysis on the role of NSFC in supporting the research. Five key topics are refined based on the bibliometric result of keywords and reviewed systematically: the geo-ontology, spatial relationship analysis, the spatial estimation, the spatial simulation and the geovisualization. The future direction and dissimilarities between domestic research and overseas are also summarized in the end.

Abstract:Spatial Computing integrates technologies like Mixed Reality, Artificial Intelligence, and the Global Positioning System, enabling immersive, natural, and intelligent multi-modal interactions in physical and virtual spaces. With the huge potential to benefit users in multiple scenarios (e.g., gaming, education, design, and healthcare), Spatial Computing is growing at an incredible rate, with different attempts to define and capitalize on the growth in both industry and academia. Beyond the location, shape, and relationship of geographic objects, Spatial Computing delves into the social, emotional, and cognitive dimensions of shared spaces. However, the human-computer interaction research on Spatial Computing faces a notable gap, particularly in user experience areas like collaboration, trust, ethics, and accessibility. Addressing this gap, this Special Interest Group (SIG) seeks to unite experts from academia and industry to explore current and future trends in Spatial Computing.

Space-Time Behavior Survey For Smart Travel Planning In Beijing, China

Abstract:In China, smart travel planning, trying to influence traveler behavior using information and communication technologies, has attracted growing interest from governments and scholars because of its potential to alleviate urban transportation problems. The implementation of smart travel planning should be based on in-depth investigations and analysis of activity-travel behavior; it is necessary to use space-time behavior data and studies in smart travel planning. This chapter argues the necessity of space-time behavior surveys for smart travel planning in China and discusses a recent example. The survey was carried out in the Shangdi-Qinghe area of Beijing and involved 709 residents recruited through a multi-stage cluster sampling procedure. GPS tracking technologies were integrated with Web-based activity-travel diaries to collect data of high spatial and temporal resolution. The data shows that, on average, respondents participated in 8.19 activities and 2.66 trips per person per day. Despite several defects, the data provides a good quantitative foundation for smart travel planning in the study area.
