Abstract:Localization is of great importance in mobile and wireless network applications. Time Difference of Arrival (TDOA) is one of the widely used localization schemes, in which the target (source) emits a signal and a number of anchors (receivers) record the arriving time of the source signal. By calculating the time difference of different receivers, the location of the target is estimated. In such a scheme, receivers must be precisely time synchronized. But time synchronization adds computational cost, and brings errors which may lower localization accuracy. Previous studies have shown that existing time synchronization approaches using low-cost devices are insufficiently accurate, or even infeasible under high requirement for accuracy. In our scheme (called Whistle), several asynchronous receivers record a target signal and a successive signal that is generated artificially. By two-signal sensing and sample counting techniques, time synchronization requirement can be removed, while high time resolution can be achieved. This design fundamentally changes TDOA in the sense of releasing the synchronization requirement and avoiding many sources of errors caused by time synchronization. We implement Whistle on commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) cell phones with acoustic signal and perform simulations with UWB signal. Especially we use Whistle to localize nodes of large-scale wireless networks, and also achieve desirable results. The extensive real-world experiments and simulations show that Whistle can be widely used with good accuracy.

Abstract:The recent years have witnessed the prosperity of the amateur drones. In spite of the great convenience brought by drones, the potential issues caused by drones, including public security and individual privacy leakage, cannot be overlooked. To counter the abuse of drones, in this paper, we design a novel drone localization system using two tetrahedral acoustic arrays, which can effectively localize drones within 100meter range. We propose a novel time difference of arrival (TDOA) estimation algorithm which combines generalized cross-correlation and probabilistic data association algorithms to accurately estimate TDOA. Different from the existing TDOA estimation algorithms, the proposed algorithm overcomes the multi-path effect and ensures the effectiveness under the low-signal-noise ratio environment. In order to further improve the performance of the proposed algorithm, we develop a novel algorithm to optimize the procedure of TDOA initialization based on dynamic programming. Finally, extensive experiments have been implemented to verify the effectiveness of our system and algorithms.

Abstract:The most state-of-art time-difference-of-arrival (TDOA) localization algorithms are performed under the assumption that all the nodes are synchronized. However, for a widely distributed wireless sensor networks (WSNs), time synchronization between all the nodes is not a trival problem. In this paper, we study the problem of source localization using signal TDOA measurements in the system of nodes part synchronization. Starting from the maximum likelihood estimator (MLE), we develop a semidefinite programming (SDP) approach. Besides, we extend the SDP algorithm to the case of non-accurate sensor position. Simulation results validate the localization performance of the proposed SDP algorithms.

Abstract:Location is of great importance wireless sensor network applications because location information can often be used to identify events. TODA is a typical localization scheme widely used in previous work, but it requires time synchronization over all anchor nodes with known positions. Time synchronization increases the cost and complexity of system, and the errors caused by software and hardware seem subtle but often lead to bad accuracy of localization. A new TDOA localization scheme is presented in this paper, whose basic idea is to use an additional, position-known signal source, S' to change the way of calculating TODA values. After the emission of the source signal S, the new signal S' is emitted. The TDOA of S between different receivers can be derived from the time difference of receiving S and S', called TD2S, at each receiver. This way eliminates the dependence of TODA on time synchronization, and improves the localization accuracy. Experiments under three-dimensional space have been conducted with mobile phones, and the results show that the proposed scheme is not only of high accuracy, but also of easy deployment, low cost, and robustness. © Copyright 2011, Editorial Department of Journal of Software. Ultra-Precise Synchronization for TDoA-based Localization Using Signals of Opportunity

Abstract:Precise localization is one key element of the Internet of Things (IoT). Especially concepts for position estimation when Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) are unavailable have moved into the focus. One crucial component for localization systems in general and precise runtime-based positioning, in particular, is the necessity of ultra-precise clock synchronization between the receiving base stations. Our work presents a software-based approach for the wireless synchronization of spatially separated base stations using a low-cost off-the-shelf frontend architecture. The proposed system estimates the time synchronization, sampling clock offset, and carrier frequency offset using broadcast signals as Signals of Opportunity. In this paper, we derive the theoretical lower bound for the estimation variance according to the Modified Cramer-Rao Bound. We show that a theoretical time synchronization accuracy in the range of ps and a frequency synchronization precision in the range of milli-Hertz is achievable. An algorithm is presented that estimates the desired parameter based on evaluating the Cross-Correlation Function between base stations. Initial measurements are conducted in a real-world environment. It is shown that the presented estimator nearly reaches the theoretical bound within a time and frequency synchronization accuracy of down to 200 ps and 6 mHz, respectively.

Abstract:Positioning with one single communication between base stations and user devices can effectively save air time and thus expand the user volume to infinite. However, this usually demands accurate synchronization between base stations. Wireless synchronization between base stations can simplify the deployment of the positioning system but requires accurate clock offset estimation between base stations. A time division multiple access (TDMA) localization system in which user devices only receive signals from base stations to generate time of arrival (TOA) measurements to position themselves and no cables are needed to interconnect base stations for clock synchronization is proposed, implemented and tested. In this system, the user devices can easily join in or exit without influence to other users and the update rate of each user can be easily adjusted independently according to its specific requirement.

Abstract:Abstract Time Difference of Arrival (TDOA) algorithm is a widely used wireless network-based localization algorithm. However, with the increasing complexity of real-life localization environments, the disturbances of noise, perturbations and multi-path effect have limited the performance of the classical TDOA algorithm. In view of these, we design an Interaction-derived Sequence Selection (IDSS) method and an Interaction-derived Sequence Adjustment (IDSA) method to reduce localization error caused by Non Line of Sight (NLOS) environments. Furthermore, an Interacting Multiple Model (IMM) framework is proposed to deal with the localization problem in complex mixed environments. Experimental results demonstrate that the IDSS and IDSA methods can enhance TDOA localization performance in NLOS environments, and the IMM framework can maintain strong adaptability in complex mixed environments.

Abstract:With the popularity of smart devices, applications based on location services have been widely used, and wireless positioning technology can provide accurate positioning information. However, due to the effect of non-line-of-sight (NLOS) errors, the performance of the system can drop significantly. Accordingly, this paper introduces the theory of quadratic programming optimization based on the research of the time difference of arrival (TDOA) theory and proposes an optimization algorithm that can effectively suppress the influence of NLOS error. Simulation results show that compared with other common wireless location algorithms, the proposed algorithm has more reliable positioning accuracy under different environment models and has better system stability.

Abstract:Nowadays, accurate localization plays an essential role in many fields, such as target tracking and path planning. The challenges of indoor localization include inadequate localization accuracy, unreasonable anchor deployment in complex scenarios, lack of stability, and the high cost. So, the universal positioning technologies cannot meet the real application requirements scarcely. To overcome these shortcomings, a comprehensive ultra wide-band (UWB)-based real-time localization system (RTLS) is presented in this paper. We introduce the architecture of a real-time localization system, then propose a new wireless clock synchronization (WCS) scheme, and finally discuss the time difference of arrival (TDoA) algorithm. We define the time-base selection strategy for the TDoA algorithm, and we analyze the relationship between anchor deployment and positioning accuracy. The extended Kalman filter (EKF) method is presented for non-linear dynamic localization estimation, and it performs well in terms of stability and accuracy on moving targets.

Abstract:In a precision positioning system, one important source of positioning error is the clock synchronization problem, which is caused by multiple base stations. Therefore, eliminating the clock synchronization problem in a no-line-of-sight (NLOS) environment plays an important role in reducing errors in a positioning system. To address this problem, this study designs a practical experimental environment and proposes the concepts of Time Difference of Arrival (TDOA) and non-line-of-sight-Time Difference of Arrival (N-TDOA). First, the improved TDOA algorithm is used to determine the tag’s position; second, the tag’s trajectory is drawn at different times; then, a map of the monitored area is loaded, and the tag trajectory is displayed in the actual experimental environment. The experimental results show that the N-TDOA algorithm synchronizes the base stations at the algorithmic layer; thus, deploying network cables or wires to achieve clock synchronization is unnecessary: wireless deployment can be used. In an NLOS environment, the N-TDOA method significantly improves the positioning accuracy compared with that of other algorithms, which facilitates further trajectory tracking research. Overall, the proposed approach improves both the accuracy and stability of trajectory tracking.

Abstract:Wireless Localization is an important application in wireless sensor networks(WSNs).But poor localization accuracy and performance are still there.This paper describes the research on an UWB(Ultra-Wideband) localization system which uses hybrid TDOA/AOA methods.It analyses localization accuracy degree of the system and meliorates its performance of localization by combining iterative refining and Kalman filter during data-processing period.This approach increases the reliability of the system in localization.The data collected from on-site experiment shows that it works.

Abstract:To provide high-precision positioning for Internet of Things (IoT) scenarios, we optimize the indoor positioning technique based on Ultra-Wideband (UWB) Time Difference of Arrival (TDOA) equipment. This paper analyzes sources of positioning error and improves the time synchronization algorithm based on the synchronization packet. Then we use the labels of the known position to further optimize the time synchronization performance, and hence improve TDOA measurements. After time synchronization optimization, a Weighted Least Square (WLS) and Taylor coordination algorithm is derived. Experiments show that our optimization reduces the average positioning error from 54.8 cm to 12.6 cm.

Robust Localization Based on Full Tdoa Set

Abstract:Time difference of arrival (TDOA) algorithms have attracted extensive attention among researchers in recent years. Instead of its widely studied non-redundant set counterpart, localization based on the full TDOA set is discussed herein. The non-redundant set is a subset of the full TDOA set. In the line-of-sight (LOS) scenarios, projecting the full TDOA set into a nonredundant set is a conventional way to reduce the computational complexity. In the non-LOS (NLOS) scenarios, it is no longer appropriate since the full TDOA set contains exploitable information and can not be transformed to an equivalent subset. Besides, the variety of NLOS errors is also a challenge. Alternatively, robust localization technologies can be used, yet it is not easy to combine the special data structures in the full TDOA set therewith. In this paper, we propose a new robust algorithm to perform NLOS-resistant localization using the full TDOA set. An essential contribution is that the proposed method jointly mitigates the negative effects of multiple types of NLOS bias errors in the optimization formulation. Simulation and experimental results demonstrate that the proposed scheme can outperform the state-of-the-art full TDOA set based approaches.

Abstract:With the overwhelming surge in position and context-aware applications, indoor localization has attracted tremendous attention in recent years. In this paper, we present an enhanced Time Difference of Arrival (TDoA) approach based on RSS-assisted Cross-correlation (RACC) method to mitigate the effect of multipath interference. Then, an integrated localization prototype implemented on Software Defined Radio (SDR) platform is constructed for validation of RACC. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed system achieves decimeter range localization precision, providing a promising solution for tracking electronic terminals.

Abstract:Localization is a fundamental issue of wireless sensor networks that has been extensively studied in the literature. Our real-world experience from GreenOrbs, a sensor network system deployed in a forest, shows that localization in the wild remains very challenging due to various interfering factors. In this paper, we propose CDL, a Combined and Differentiated Localization approach for localization that exploits the strength of range-free approaches and range-based approaches using received signal strength indicator (RSSI). A critical observation is that ranging quality greatly impacts the overall localization accuracy. To achieve a better ranging quality, our method CDL incorporates virtual-hop localization, local filtration, and ranging-quality aware calibration. We have implemented and evaluated CDL by extensive real-world experiments in GreenOrbs and large-scale simulations. Our experimental and simulation results demonstrate that CDL outperforms current state-of-art localization approaches with a more accurate and consistent performance. For example, the average location error using CDL in GreenOrbs system is 2.9 m, while the previous best method SISR has an average error of 4.6 m.

Abstract:Different from the traditional approach of using the reduced set of time-difference-of-arrival (TDOA) measurements, localization by the full TDOA set is discussed here. It avoids choosing a specific reference sensor and exploits more measurements, conferring robustness against outliers. Nevertheless, the none-line-of-sight (NLOS) propagation still presents challenges for the existing full-set positioning algorithms. In this work, we develop an iterative scheme that utilizes the full TDOA measurements for localization capable of simultaneously mitigating the influence of outliers and NLOS-path measurements. The proposed scheme consists of the localization and identification modules, and they are designed with low complexity to meet real-time positioning demands. The theoretical optimal TDOA methods using full-set measurements are proposed in the localization module. Besides, to identify the NLOS measurements, the identification module adopts a greedy search-based random sample consensus (GS-RSC) algorithm. It can work cooperatively with the proposed lightweight localization module, returning a set free of outliers, NLOS measurements, and an accurate source location estimate. The theoretical analysis and experiments illustrate the superiority of the proposed scheme over the state-of-the-art TDOA full-set algorithms for handling outliers and NLOS measurements in localization.
Design and Implementation of a Wireless Time Synchronization Based Positioning System

Abstract:Positioning systems using radio frequency signals can be realized by various approaches among which a system with fixed base stations and mobile user devices is a typical implementation scheme. For such systems based on the time of arrival (TOA) measurement of wireless signals, positioning accuracy is affected by multiple factors. Specifically for a system using time difference of arrival (TDOA) measurements, the time synchronization error between base stations is a significant error source for the final user position result. In this work, a wireless synchronization scheme is proposed to estimate and compensate the time offsets between base stations. Furthermore, based on this scheme, a TDOA positioning system in which the user device transmits ultra-wide band signals and the base stations receive is designed and implemented. Test results shows a 100-picosecond level synchronization precision and a centimeter-level position accuracy.

Abstract:With the increasing demand for location-based services, indoor localization technology based on wireless sensor networks (WSNs) has recently received significant attention. Bluetooth low energy (BLE) has become a research hotspot among the numerous WSNs due to its ubiquitous deployment, low power consumption, and low cost. Many previous BLE-based indoor localization technologies can only use received signal strength indication (RSSI) for localization in the 2-dimensional (2D) plane and achieve coarse accuracy. However, high-accuracy location information is required in an increasing number of applications, e.g., elderly fall detection for medical applications, which urgently requires a new BLE-based localization technology in 3D space. To this end, we propose Spotlight, an angle-based fine-grained indoor localization system in 3D space using BLE sensors. The critical idea of the Spotlight is to measure the angle of arrival (AoA) and elevation of angle (EoA) of the signal from the target to the BLE receivers and utilize them to achieve accurate 3D localization. Specifically, we develop offset elimination algorithm and data stitching algorithm, utilizing the second-order cone (SoC) programming to obtain accurate angle estimates. Then the simulated annealing algorithm (SAA) is used to search for the target location in 3D space. Finally, we develop the prototype system with commercial off-the-shelf BLE sensors and conduct extensive experimental measurements in real-world scenarios. The results demonstrate that the proposed system can achieve a median localization error of 36 cm in 2D plane and 48 cm in 3D space.

Parameterized TDOA: Instantaneous TDOA Estimation and Localization for Mobile Targets in a Time-Division Broadcast Positioning System

Abstract:Localization of mobile targets is a fundamental problem across various domains. One-way ranging-based downlink localization has gained significant attention due to its ability to support an unlimited number of targets and enable autonomous navigation by performing localization at the target side. Time-difference-of-arrival (TDOA)-based methods are particularly advantageous as they obviate the need for target-anchor synchronization, unlike time-of-arrival (TOA)-based approaches. However, existing TDOA estimation methods inherently rely on the quasi-static assumption (QSA), which assumes that targets remain stationary during the measurement period, thereby limiting their applicability in dynamic environments. In this paper, we propose a novel instantaneous TDOA estimation method for dynamic environments, termed Parameterized TDOA (P-TDOA). We first characterize the nonlinear, time-varying TDOA measurements using polynomial models and construct a system of linear equations for the model parameters through dedicated transformations, employing a novel successive time difference strategy (STDS). Subsequently, we solve the parameters with a weighted least squares (WLS) solution, thereby obtaining instantaneous TDOA estimates. Furthermore, we develop a mobile target localization approach that leverages instantaneous TDOA estimates from multiple anchor pairs at the same instant. Theoretical analysis shows that our proposed method can approach the Cramer-Rao lower bound (CRLB) of instantaneous TDOA estimation and localization in concurrent TOA scenarios, despite actual TOA measurements being obtained sequentially. Extensive numerical simulations validate our theoretical analysis and demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method, highlighting its superiority over state-of-the-art approaches across various scenarios.
