Abstract:Some new upper and lower bounds on determinants are presented for diagonally dominant matrices and general -matrices by using different methods. These bounds are some improvements of results given by Ostrowski (1952) and (1937), Price (1951), Wang and Zhang (2002), Huang and Liu (2005), and so forth. In addition, these bounds are also used to localize some numerical characters (e.g., the minimum eigenvalues, singular values and condition numbers) of certain matrices.

On the determinants of matrices with elements from arbitrary sets

Abstract:Recently there has been several works estimating the number of $n\times n$ matrices with elements from some finite sets $\mathcal X$ of arithmetic interest and of a given determinant. Typically such results are compared with the trivial upper bound $O(X^{n^2-1})$, where $X$ is the cardinality of $\mathcal X$. Here we show that even for arbitrary sets $\mathcal X\subseteq \mathbb R$,some recent results from additive combinatorics enable us to obtain a stronger bound with a power saving.

Abstract:It is difficult to compute eigenvalues of large-scale matrices accurately.Hence,it is inter- esting to estimate eigenvalues by simple expressions of row sums and column sums.We introduce a transform which does not change eigenvalues of matrices,but gives better row sums and column sums than the original matrices.Based on those sums,new lower bounds for the Perron roots of nonnegative matrices are derived,by using methods introudced by Lu and Ma.

Abstract:In this paper we study some determinant inequalities and matrix inequalities which have a geometrical flavour. We first examine some inequalities which place work of Macbeath [13] in a more general setting and also relate to recent work of Gressman [8]. In particular, we establish optimisers for these determinant inequalities. We then use these inequalities to establish our main theorem which gives a geometric inequality of matrix type which improves and extends some inequalities of Christ in [5].

Abstract:This article evaluates the determinants of two classes of special matrices, which are both from a number theory problem. Applications of the evaluated determinants can be found in [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="math.NT/0509523" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/math.NT/0509523">arXiv:math.NT/0509523</a>]. Note that the two determinants are actually special cases of Theorems 20 and 23 in [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="math.CO/9902004" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/math.CO/9902004">arXiv:math.CO/9902004</a>], respectively. Since this paper does not provide any new results, it will not be published anywhere.

Abstract:We prove two inequalities regarding the ratio $\det(A+D)/\det A$ of the determinant of a positive-definite matrix $A$ and the determinant of its perturbation $A+D$. In the first problem, we study the perturbations that happen when positive matrices are added to diagonal blocks of the original matrix. In the second problem, the perturbations are added to the inverses of the matrices.

Abstract:In the paper, the concept of generalized equidiagonal-dominant matrix is introduced and a necessary and sufficient condition for a non-singular H-matrix is obtained. Abstract:Let $p>3$ be a prime and $(\frac{.}{p})$ be the Legendre symbol. For any integer $d$ with $p\nmid d$ and any positive integer $m$, Sun introduced the determinants $$T_m(d,p)=\det\left[(i^2+dj^2)^m\left(\frac{i^2+dj^2}{p}\right)\right]_{1\leqslant i,j \leqslant (p-1)/2},$$ and $$D_p^{(m)}= \det\left[(i^2-j^2)^m\left(\frac{i^2-j^2}{p}\right)\right]_{1\leq i,j\leq (p-1)/2} .$$ In this paper, we obtain some properties of $T_m (d,p)$ and $ \sqrt{D_p^{(m)}}$ for some $m$. We also confirm some related conjectures posed by Zhi-Wei Sun.

Abstract:We give a lower bound for the Waring rank and cactus rank of forms that are invariant under an action of a connected algebraic group. We use this to improve the Ranestad--Schreyer--Shafiei lower bounds for the Waring ranks and cactus ranks of determinants of generic matrices, Pfaffians of generic skew-symmetric matrices, and determinants of generic symmetric matrices.

Abstract:The permanent of a multidimensional matrix is the sum of products of entries over all diagonals. By Minc's conjecture, there exists a reachable upper bound on the permanent of 2-dimensional (0,1)-matrices. In this paper we obtain some generalizations of Minc's conjecture to the multidimensional case. For this purpose we prove and compare several bounds on the permanent of multidimensional (0,1)-matrices. Most estimates can be used for matrices with nonnegative bounded entries.

Abstract:In this paper we study some determinants and permanents. In particular, we investigate the new type determinants $$\det[(i^2+cij+dj^2)^{p-2}]_{1\le i,j\le p-1}\ \text{and} \ \det[(i^2+cij+dj^2)^{p-2}]_{0\le i,j\le p-1}$$ modulo an odd prime $p$, where $c$ and $d$ are integers.
