Abstract:In this paper, we consider a Cauchy problem of the time fractional diffusion equation (TFDE) in x ∈ [0, L]. This problem is ubiquitous in science and engineering applications. The illposedness of the Cauchy problem is explained by its solution in frequency domain. Furthermore, the problem is formulated into a minimization problem with a modified Tikhonov regularization method. The gradient of the regularization functional based on an adjoint problem is deduced and the standard conjugate gradient method is presented for solving the minimization problem. The error estimates for the regularized solutions are obtained under Hp norm priori bound assumptions. Finally, numerical examples illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Abstract:In this paper we introduce an adaptive regularization scheme based on algorithms for minimization of the Tikhonov functional to reconstruct the solution x(dagger) of nonlinear ill-posed problem F(x) = y, where the right-hand side is replaced by noisy data y(delta) is an element of Y with vertical bar vertical bar y - y(delta)vertical bar vertical bar <= delta, and F : D(F) subset of X -> Y is a nonlinear operator between Hilbert spaces X and Y. Under the assumption that Frechet derivative F ' is Lipschitz continuous, a choice of the regularization parameter and the stopping criteria for minimization algorithms are presented. We prove that under a general source condition given in terms of a nonlinear operator F the error vertical bar vertical bar x(dagger) - x(k)vertical bar vertical bar between the regularized approximation x(k) and the solution x(dagger) is of optimal order.

Abstract:An inverse source problem in themodified Helmholtz equation is considered. We give a Tikhonov-type regularization method and set up a theoretical frame to analyze the convergence of such method. A priori and a posteriori choice rules to find the regularization parameter are given. Numerical tests are presented to illustrate the effectiveness and stability of our proposed method.

Abstract:This research studies the inverse boundary value problem for fractional elliptic equation of Tricomi–Gellerstedt–Keldysh type and obtains a condition stability result. To recover the continuous dependence of the solution on the measurement data, a generalized Tikhonov regularization method based on ill-posedness analysis is constructed. Under the a priori and a posterior selection rules for the regularization parameter, corresponding Hölder type convergence results are obtained. On this basis, this thesis verifies the simulation effect of the generalized Tikhonov method through numerical examples. The examples show that the method performs well in dealing with the problem under consideration.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate an ill-posed Cauchy problem involving a stochastic parabolic equation. We first establish a Carleman estimate for this equation. Leveraging this estimate, we derive the conditional stability and convergence rate of the Tikhonov regularization method for the aforementioned ill-posed Cauchy problem. To complement our theoretical analysis, we employ kernel-based learning theory to implement the completed Tikhonov regularization method for several numerical examples.

Abstract:In this paper, we proposed a piecewise Tikhonov regularization scheme to overcome the disadvantage of the classical Tikhonov regularization for solving the Radon integral equation whose solution is piecewise continues arising in CT imaging. In our new scheme, we firstly detect the location of discontinuous interface by applying the classical Tikhonov regularization. Then a so-called piecewise Tikhonov regularization method is applied to reconstruction the smooth solution in each piece. Some numerical examples has also be presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of this two-steps scheme.

Abstract:In this paper, we discuss a classical ill-posed problem-numerical differentiation by the Tikhonov regularization. Based on the conditional stability estimate for this ill-posed problem, a new simple method for choosing regularization parameters is proposed. We show that it has an almost optimal convergence rate when the exact solution is in H-2. The advantages of our method are (1) we can get similar computational results with much less computation, in comparison with other methods, and (2) we can find the discontinuous points numerically.

Abstract:In this article, we consider the identification of an unknown steady source in a class of fractional diffusion equations. A modified Tikhonov regularization method based on Hermite expansion is presented to deal with the ill-posedness of the problem. By using the properties of Hermitian functions, we construct a modified penalty term for the Tikhonov functional. It can be proved that the method can adaptively achieve the order optimal results when we choose the regularization parameter by the discrepancy principle. Some examples are also provided to verify the effectiveness of the method.

Abstract:Unique continuation is one of the most important properties for the solution of partial differential equation, which means the local information of the solution can determine the global one. In this paper, we discuss a special unique continuation for Helmholtz equations on a sphere in , which is different with the classical unique continuation. The unique continuation holds only on the sphere and may not be extended to the domain in . A Hölder type conditional stability of unique continuation is proved by complex extension method. Then a Tikhonov regularized scheme is proposed and the convergence rate is obtained by using the conditional stability estimate. Numerical examples are presented to show the performance of the scheme. It should be remarked here that our results may be applied to the problem of recovering a far field pattern with its local information.

Abstract:In this paper, we discuss local unique continuation for a harmonic function on lines. By using complex extension, we prove a conditional stability estimation for a harmonic function on a line. Our unique continuation is an intermediate property between the classical unique continuation for a harmonic function and the analytic continuation for a holomorphic function. As an application, we show conditional stability up to the boundary ill a Cauchy problem of the Laplace equation.

Abstract:We have developed an improved adaptive iterative method based on the nonstationary iterative Tikhonov regularization method for performing a downward continuation of the potential-field data from a horizontal plane. Our method uses the Tikhonov regularization result as initial value and has an incremental geometric choice of the regularization parameter. We compared our method with previous methods (Tikhonov regularization, Landweber iteration, and integral-iteration method). The downward-continuation performance of these methods in spatial and wavenumber domains were compared with the aspects of their iterative schemes, filter functions, and downward-continuation operators. Applications to synthetic gravity and real aeromagnetic data showed that our iterative method yields a better downward continuation of the data than other methods. Our method shows fast computation times and a stable convergence. In addition, the [Formula: see text]-curve criterion for choosing the regularization parameter is expressed here in the wavenumber domain and used to speed up computations and to adapt the wavenumber-domain iterative method.

Abstract:We investigate a backward problem in time of diffusion equation with Laplace and Riesz-Feller space fractional operators. Firstly, inspired by the classical Landweber iterative method, a modified iterative regularization method is proposed to restore the continuous dependence of solution on the measurement data, and then under the a-priori and a-posteriori selection rules of regularization parameter, we give and prove the convergence estimations of regularization solution. Finally, we verify the regularization effect of modified iterative method by doing some numerical experiments. Numerical results show that this method is stable and feasible when it is used to deal with the inverse problem in this article.

Abstract:In this article, local unique continuation on a line for solutions of the Helmholtz equation is discussed. The fundamental solution of the exterior problem for the Helmholtz equation have a logarithmic singularity which behaves similar to those of the interior problem for the Laplace equation in two dimension. A Holder-type conditional stability estimate of the proposed exterior problem for the Helmholtz equation is obtained by adopting the complex extension method in Cheng and Yamamoto [J. Cheng and M. Yamamoto, Unique continuation on a line for harmonic functions, Inverse Probl. 14 (1998), pp. 869-882]. Finally, a regularization scheme based on the collocation method is compatible with the Holder-type stability estimate provided that the line does not intersect the boundary of the domain for both the Laplace and the Helmholtz equations.

Abstract:In this article, we discuss a classical ill-posed problem on numerical differentiation by a Tikhonov regularization method based on the discrete cosine transform (DCT). After implementing an eigenvalue decomposition of the second-order difference matrix in the penalty we obtain an explicit minimizer of the Tikhonov functional in a linear combination of DCT-2 components. The choice of the regularization parameter thus can be properly chosen after calling a single variable bounded nonlinear function minimization. Moreover, we propose two approaches to weaken the Gibbs phenomena appearing near the boundary of the reconstructed derivatives. Several numerical examples are provided to show the computational efficiency of our proposed algorithm. Finally, the extension to the multidimensional numerical differentiation leads the approach to a wider scope.

Abstract:We study the influence of analytical regularization used in the generalized function (distribution) space to the Tikhonov regularization procedure utilized in the different versions of Moore-Penrose's inversion. By introducing a new analytical term to the Tikhonov regularization of Moore-Penrose's inversion procedure, we derive new optimization conditions that extend the Tikhonov regularization framework and influence the fitting parameter. This enhancement yields a more robust and accurate reconstruction of physical quantities, demonstrating its potential impact on various studies. We illustrate the significance of new term through schematic examples of physical applications, highlighting its relevance to diverse fields. Our findings provide a valuable tool for improving inversion methods and their applications in physics and beyond.

Abstract:We consider continuation of solutions u to elliptic and parabolic equations limited on hyperplane under some symmetry conditions of the coefficients: for two domains gamma and Gamma on a hyperplane in R-d satisfying gamma subset of subset of Gamma, we prove conditional stability estimates of u vertical bar(Gamma) by u vertical bar(gamma) for an elliptic equation and u vertical bar(Gamma xI) by u vertical bar(gamma x(0,T)) for a parabolic equation with open interval I subset of subset of (0, T). The proof is based on the even extension and conditional stability for Cauchy problems for elliptic and parabolic equations. We apply the result to prove the uniqueness for an inverse source problem for a heat equation of determining a spatial factor on Gamma only by data on gamma. Furthermore we provide characterizations of hyperplanes admitting such continuation. Finally we discuss such continuation for semi-linear elliptic equations.

Abstract:Consider a two-dimensional backward heat conduction problem for a general domain with a boundary. Based on the fundamental solution to the heat equation, we propose to solve this problem by the boundary integral equation method, which generates a coupled ill-posed integral equation. Then the well posedness of the proposed regularizing problem and convergence property of the regularizing solution to the exact one are proven. Our regularizing scheme can be considered a quasi Tikhonov regularization, with the advantage of a relatively small amount of computation compared with the classical Tikhonov regularization. Numerical performances are given to show the validity of our inversion method.
