Abstract:This paper investigates the length of sublattice-lattice of finite distributive lattice. The following result is proved. For finite distributive lattices L and K$, then l_*(Sub(L\times K)) = l_*(Sub(L)) + l_*(Sub(K)). Therefore, we have solved the Problem 1 of C.C.Chen in [1].

Abstract:In this paper, we study the covering dimension of finite distributive lattices. By the Birkhoff's representation theorem for finite distributive lattices, we prove that for any finite distributive lattice L , , where is the set of all maximal elements of join-irreducible elements of L . Based on the relationships between the covering dimension of topological spaces and that of bounded distributive lattices, we characterize the covering dimension of finite spaces. Finally, we study the covering dimension of the linear sum, Cartesian product, lexicographic product and rectangular product of two finite distributive lattices.

Abstract:A distributive lattice structure ${\mathbf M}(G)$ has been established on the set of perfect matchings of a plane bipartite graph $G$. We call a lattice {\em matchable distributive lattice} (simply MDL) if it is isomorphic to such a distributive lattice. It is natural to ask which lattices are MDLs. We show that if a plane bipartite graph $G$ is elementary, then ${\mathbf M}(G)$ is irreducible. Based on this result, a decomposition theorem on MDLs is obtained: a finite distributive lattice $\mathbf{L}$ is an MDL if and only if each factor in any cartesian product decomposition of $\mathbf{L}$ is an MDL. Two types of MDLs are presented: $J(\mathbf{m}\times \mathbf{n})$ and $J(\mathbf{T})$, where $\mathbf{m}\times \mathbf{n}$ denotes the cartesian product between $m$-element chain and $n$-element chain, and $\mathbf{T}$ is a poset implied by any orientation of a tree.

Abstract:This paper studies the differential lattice, defined to be a lattice L equipped with a map d:L→L\documentclass[12pt]{minimal}\usepackage{amsmath}\usepackage{wasysym}\usepackage{amsfonts}\usepackage{amssymb}\usepackage{amsbsy}\usepackage{mathrsfs}\usepackage{upgreek}\setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt}\begin{document}$$d:L\rightarrow L$$\end{document} that satisfies a lattice analog of the Leibniz rule for a derivation. Isomorphic differential lattices are studied and classifications of differential lattices are obtained for some basic lattices. Several families of derivations on a lattice are explicitly constructed, giving realizations of the lattice as lattices of derivations. Derivations on a finite distributive lattice are shown to have a natural structure of lattice. Moreover, derivations on a complete infinitely distributive lattice form a complete lattice. For a general lattice, it is conjectured that its poset of derivations is a lattice that uniquely determines the given lattice.

Abstract:Let L be a distributive lattice and M n , q ( L ) (M n ( L ) , resp.) the semigroup (semiring, resp.) of n × q ( n × n , resp.) matrices over L . In this paper, we show that if there is a subdirect embedding from distributive lattice L to the direct product ∏ i = 1 m ‍ L i of distributive lattices L 1 , L 2 , ... , L m , then there will be a corresponding subdirect embedding from the matrix semigroup M n , q ( L ) (semiring M n ( L ) , resp.) to semigroup ∏ i = 1 m ‍ M n , q ( L i ) (semiring ∏ i = 1 m ‍ M n ( L i ) , resp.). Further, it is proved that a matrix over a distributive lattice can be decomposed into the sum of matrices over some of its special subchains. This generalizes and extends the decomposition theorems of matrices over finite distributive lattices, chain semirings, fuzzy semirings, and so forth. Finally, as some applications, we present a method to calculate the indices and periods of the matrices over a distributive lattice and characterize the structures of idempotent and nilpotent matrices over it. We translate the characterizations of idempotent and nilpotent matrices over a distributive lattice into the corresponding ones of the binary Boolean cases, which also generalize the corresponding structures of idempotent and nilpotent matrices over general Boolean algebras, chain semirings, fuzzy semirings, and so forth.
Stanley's conjecture on the Schur positivity of distributive lattices

Abstract:In this paper we solve an open problem on distributive lattices, which was proposed by Stanley in 1998. This problem was motivated by a conjecture due to Griggs, which equivalently states that the incomparability graph of the boolean algebra $B_n$ is nice. Stanley introduced the idea of studying the nice property of a graph by investigating the Schur positivity of its corresponding chromatic symmetric functions. Since the boolean algebras form a special class of distributive lattices, Stanley raised the question of whether the incomparability graph of any distributive lattice is Schur positive. Stanley further noted that this seems quite unlikely. In this paper, we construct a family of distributive lattices which are not nice and hence not Schur positive. We also provide a family of distributive lattices which are nice but not Schur positive.

It builds on 1992 notes of the author (available on ResearchGate), and in so doing heeds a wish of the late Gian-Carlo Rota. Part A is in fairly final form and mainly features known material, exceptions being a short proof of the distributivity of congruence lattices of lattices, as well as the concept of a point-splitting (which applies to arbitrary partial linear spaces). The planned content of Parts B,C,D is given in the introduction of Part A. Abstract:A lattice $\Lambda$ is said to be an extension of a sublattice $L$ of smaller rank if $L$ is equal to the intersection of $\Lambda$ with the subspace spanned by $L$. The goal of this paper is to initiate a systematic study of the geometry of lattice extensions. We start by proving the existence of a small-determinant extension of a given lattice, and then look at successive minima and covering radius. To this end, we investigate extensions (within an ambient lattice) preserving the successive minima of the given lattice, as well as extensions preserving the covering radius. We also exhibit some interesting arithmetic properties of deep holes of planar lattices.

Abstract:Analogous to subfactor theory, employing Watatani's notions of index and $C^*$-basic construction of certain inclusions of $C^*$-algebras, (a) we develop a Fourier theory (consisting of Fourier transforms, rotation maps and shift operators) on the relative commutants of any inclusion of simple unital $C^*$-algebras with finite Watatani index, and (b) we introduce the notions of interior and exterior angles between intermediate $C^*$-subalgebras of any inclusion of unital $C^*$-algebras admitting a finite index conditional expectation. Then, on the lines of [2], we apply these concepts to obtain a bound for the cardinality of the lattice of intermediate $C^*$-subalgebras of any irreducible inclusion as in (a), and improve Longo's bound for the cardinality of intermediate subfactors of an inclusion of type $III$ factors with finite index. Moreover, we also show that for a fairly large class of inclusions of finite von Neumann algebras, the lattice of intermediate von Neumann subalgebras is always finite.

On the lattice of closed subgroups of a profinite group

Abstract:The subgroup lattice of a group is a great source of information about the structure of the group itself. The aim of this paper is to use a similar tool for studying profinite groups. In more detail, we study the lattices of closed or open subgroups of a profinite group and its relation with the whole group. We show, for example, that procyclic groups are the only profinite groups with a distributive lattice of closed or open subgroups, and we give a sharp characterization of profinite groups whose lattice of closed (or open) subgroups satisfies the Dedekind modular law; we actually give a precise description of the behaviour of modular elements of the lattice of closed subgroups. We also deal with the problem of carrying some structural information from a profinite group to another one having an isomorphic lattice of closed (or open) subgroups. Some interesting consequences and related results concerning decomposability and the number of profinite groups with a given lattice of closed (or open) subgroups are also obtained.

Abstract:We develop a new class of lattices called Onion lattices, analyse the properties of Onion lattices and further prove that the set of idempotent lattice functions on a bounded lattice L is closed under convolution operations if and only if L is an Onion lattice. This solves the second open problem posed by De Miguel, Bustince and De Baets (2018) [1]. Furthermore, we study in depth the lattice function algebraic system with the properties of the Birkhoff system proposed in [1]. We obtain that the set of idempotent lattice functions under the operations ⊓ and ⊔ constitutes a Birkhoff system if and only if the domain of the idempotent lattice functions is the Onion lattice. And we explore some algebraic properties of Birkhoff systems consisting of sets of idempotent lattice functions.

The fundamental theorem of finite semidistributive lattices

Abstract:We prove a Fundamental Theorem of Finite Semidistributive Lattices (FTFSDL), modelled on Birkhoff's Fundamental Theorem of Finite Distributive Lattices. Our FTFSDL is of the form "A poset L is a finite semidistributive lattice if and only if there exists a set Sha with some additional structure, such that L is isomorphic to the admissible subsets of Sha ordered by inclusion; in this case, Sha and its additional structure are uniquely determined by L." The additional structure on Sha is a combinatorial abstraction of the notion of torsion pairs from representation theory and has geometric meaning in the case of posets of regions of hyperplane arrangements. We show how the FTFSDL clarifies many constructions in lattice theory, such as canonical join representations and passing to quotients, and how the semidistributive property interacts with other major classes of lattices. Many of our results also apply to infinite lattices.

Uniformly closed sublattices of finite codimension

Abstract:The paper investigates uniformly closed subspaces, sublattices, and ideals of finite codimension in Archimedean vector lattices. It is shown that every uniformly closed subspace (or sublattice) of finite codimension may be written as an intersection of uniformly closed subspaces (respectively, sublattices) of codimension one. Every uniformly closed sublattice of codimension $n$ contains a uniformly closed ideal of codimension at most $2n$. If the vector lattice is uniformly complete then every ideal of finite codimension is uniformly closed. Results of the paper extend (and are motivated by) results of [AL90a,AL90b] and , as well as Kakutani's characterization of closed sublattices of $C(K)$ spaces.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the lattice Subf S of full subsemigroups of an inverse semigroup S. Our first main theorem states that for any inverse semigroup S, Subf S is a subdirect product of the lattices of full subsemigroups of its principal factors, so that Subf S is distributive [meet semidistributive, join semidistributive, modular, semimodular] if and only if the lattice of full subsemigroups of each principal factor is. To examine such inverse semigroups, therefore, we need essentially only consider those which are 0-simple. For a 0-simple inverse semigroup S (not a group with zero), we show that in fact each of modularity, meet semidistributivity and join semidistributivity of Subf S is equivalent to distributivity of S, that is, S is the combinatorial Brandt semigroup with exactly two nonzero idempotents and two nonidempotents. About semimodularity, however, we concentrate only on the completely 0-simple case, that is, Brandt semigroups. For a Brandt semigroup S (not a group with zero), semimodularity of Subf S is equivalent to distributivity of Subf S. Finally, we characterize an inverse semigroup S for which Subf S is a chain.
Covering Distributive Lattices by Intervals

Abstract:We consider the convex subset $[A,B]$ of all elements between two levels $A$ and $B$ of a finite distributive lattice, as a union of (or covered by) intervals $[a,b]$. A 1988 result of Voigt and Wegener shows that for such convex subsets of finite Boolean lattices, covers using $\max(|A|,|B|)$ intervals (the minimum possible number) exist. In 1992 Bouchemakh and Engel pointed out that this result holds more generally for finite products of finite chains. In this paper we show that covers of size $\max(|A|,|B|)$ exist for $[A,B]$ when $A$ is the set of atoms and $B$ the set of coatoms of any finite distributive lattice. This is a consequence of a more general result for finite partially ordered sets. We also speculate on the situation when other levels of finite distributive lattices are considered, and prove a couple of theorems supporting these speculations.

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce the Maximum Distance Sublattice Problem (MDSP). We observed that the problem of solving an instance of the Closest Vector Problem (CVP) in a lattice $\mathcal{L}$ is the same as solving an instance of MDSP in the dual lattice of $\mathcal{L}$. We give an alternate reduction between the CVP and MDSP. This alternate reduction does not use the concept of dual lattice.

Abstract:In the latest developments in the theory of skew lattices, distributivity has been one of the main topics of study. The largest classes of examples of such algebras are distributive. Unlike what happens in lattices, the properties of cancellation and distributivity are independent for skew lattices. In this paper we will discuss several aspects of distributivity in the absence of commutativity, review the recent results by Kinyon and Leech on these matters and have an insight on the coset structure of those algebras that satisfy this property. We will also discuss combinatorial implications of these results.

Abstract:Dedekind's problem, dating back to 1897, asks for the total number $\psi(n)$ of antichains contained in the Boolean lattice $B_n$ on $n$ elements. We study Dedekind's problem using a recently developed method based on the cluster expansion from statistical physics and as a result, obtain several new results on the number and typical structure of antichains in $B_n$. We obtain detailed estimates for both $\psi(n)$ and the number of antichains of size $\beta \binom{n}{\lfloor n/2 \rfloor}$ for any fixed $\beta>0$. We also establish a sparse version of Sperner's theorem: we determine the sharp threshold and scaling window for the property that almost every antichain of size $m$ is contained in a middle layer of $B_n$.
