Abstract:The noise distribution in the mechanical system is tightly connected to the structure design and particular operating conditions. The noise source localization can effectively assist with the operating condition monitoring and noise reduction design of the mechanical device. The performance limitation of the array aperture for lower frequency acoustic localization is broken up by the non-synchronous measurement at coprime positions (CP-NSM), while this method has high uncertainty and requires an efficient adaptive regularization method to solve its corresponding acoustic inverse problem. The algorithms under the Bayesian framework with Student-t priors (variational Bayesian approximation and subspace variational Bayesian) are derived and deployed to solve the acoustic inverse problem in the CP-NSM method, and the results are compared with those obtained by the interior-point method and the alternating direction method of the multipliers algorithm. The proposed Bayesian methods have the advantages of adaptive regularization parameter estimation, which can reduce the influence of various interferences in CP-NSM. At the same time, in addition to using simulations and experiments in the anechoic chambers, the proposed Bayesian algorithms are validated further in real industrial applications. The proposed method is applied to improve the noise reduction design of the centrifugal fan, a mechanical device containing more information from noise sources.
A robust super-resolution approach with sparsity constraint for near-field wideband acoustic imaging

Abstract:Acoustic source imaging has nowadays been widely used in source localization and separation. In this paper, based on the deconvolution methods (DAMAS), we propose a robust super-resolution approach with sparsity constraint (SC-RDAMAS) to estimate both the positions and powers of the sources, as well as the noise variance in low Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR) situation. For effectively applying sparsity constraint, we explore a better initialization of source number to determine the bound of total source powers. By simulations and real data, we show that our SC-RDAMAS can obtain more accurate estimations of source positions and averaging powers, and can be more robust to strong noise interference, by comparison with the state of the art methods: the Beamforming, DAMAS, DAMAS with sparsity constraint (SC-DAMAS) and the Covariance Matrix Fitting (CMF) method. Indeed the computation burden of the proposed method is much lower than the CMF, so that our SC-RDAMAS is more applicable to scan the large region with super resolutions.

Abstract:For specific wideband sound source localization tasks performed in underwater environments, high precision, low computational complexity, and high robustness are required to meet the demand for accurate location in real-time processes. Traditional sound source localization methods that rely on models and signal processing techniques perform poorly in complex but common scenarios where noise, reverberation, and array deviations exist. Sound source localization systems based on deep neural networks are proposed recently and show superiority over conventional localization methods. However, lighter neural network structures for common wideband signals localization have been underexplored, which are crucial for improving the operational efficiency and practicability in underwater localization systems. In this paper, we propose a light neural network structure to locate the typical underwater wideband sound sources in communication and localization systems. The network mainly consists of convolutional and residual blocks. We train the network with simulated single tones and finetune it with multiple sets of single tones received in the experiment. As for the training feature, we choose the phase component of the covariance matrix and reshape the upper triangle into one column to reduce the feature dimension. The test signals include chirps, single-carrier modulation quadrature phase shift keying(SC-QPSK), multi-carrier modulations such as multi-tone and orthogonal frequency division multiplexing(OFDM). Both the simulation and experiment results have verified the high accuracy and robustness of our proposed method. Compared with the state-of-the-arts, our method obtains superior performance, especially in scenarios with low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR).
Digital Modulation Recognition Based on Wavelet Denoising and Convolution Neural Network.

Abstract:It is difficult for traditional modulation recognition methods to extract feature parameters manually and their anti-noise ability is weak. The existing deep learning methods have high computational complexity. This paper proposes a digital modulation recognition algorithm based on wavelet denoising and convolution neural network (WD-CNN). In this paper, the signal is firstly processed by wavelet threshold denoising to reduce the interference of noise. Then the signal is mapped to the constellation diagram, and the constellation diagram is input into convolution neural network to extract features after normalizing. At last the modulation mode of signal is identified by the Softmax classifier and the Gradient-weighted Class Activation Mapping (Grad-CAM) is used to explain the performance of the convolution neural network. We use MATLAB R2019b software to generate data sets under different signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) conditions and then teste the sets. The results show that this method has high accuracy of modulation recognition, strong anti-noise ability, low time complexity and low memory consumption.
A Binaural MFCC-CNN Sound Quality Model of High-Speed Train

Abstract:The high-speed train (HST) is one of the most important transport tools in China, and the sound quality of its interior noise affects passengers’ comfort. This paper proposes a HST sound quality model. The model combines Mel-scale frequency cepstral coefficients (MFCCs), the most popular spectral-based input parameter in deep learning models, with convolutional neural networks (CNNs) to evaluate the sound quality of HSTs. Meanwhile, two input channels are applied to simulate binaural hearing so that the different sound signals can be processed separately. The binaural MFCC-CNN model achieves an accuracy of 96.2% and outperforms the traditional shallow neural network model because it considers the time-varying characteristics of noise. The MFCC features are capable of capturing the characteristics of noise and improving the accuracy of sound quality evaluations. Besides, the results suggest that the time and level differences in sound signals are important factors affecting sound quality at low annoyance levels. The proposed model is expected to optimize the comfort of the interior acoustic environment of HSTs.
Study on Analytical Noise Propagation in Convolutional Neural Network Methods Used in Computed Tomography Imaging

Abstract:Neural network methods have recently emerged as a hot topic in computed tomography(CT)imaging owing to their powerful fitting ability;however,their potential applications still need to be carefully studied because their results are often difficult to interpret and are ambiguous in generalizability.Thus,quality assessments of the results obtained from a neural network are necessary to evaluate the neural network.Assessing the image quality of neural networks using traditional objective measurements is not appropriate because neural networks are nonsta-tionary and nonlinear.In contrast,subjective assessments are trustworthy,although they are time-and energy-con-suming for radiologists.Model observers that mimic sub-jective assessment require the mean and covariance of images,which are calculated from numerous image sam-ples;however,this has not yet been applied to the evalu-ation of neural networks.In this study,we propose an analytical method for noise propagation from a single projection to efficiently evaluate convolutional neural networks(CNNs)in the CT imaging field.We propagate noise through nonlinear layers in a CNN using the Taylor expansion.Nesting of the linear and nonlinear layer noise propagation constitutes the covariance estimation of the CNN.A commonly used U-net structure is adopted for validation.The results reveal that the covariance estimation obtained from the proposed analytical method agrees well with that obtained from the image samples for different phantoms,noise levels,and activation functions,demon-strating that propagating noise from only a single projec-tion is feasible for CNN methods in CT reconstruction.In addition,we use covariance estimation to provide three measurements for the qualitative and quantitative perfor-mance evaluation of U-net.The results indicate that the network cannot be applied to projections with high noise levels and possesses limitations in terms of efficiency for processing low-noise projections.U-net is more effective in improving the image quality of smooth regions com-pared with that of the edge.LeakyReLU outperforms Swish in terms of noise reduction.

Abstract:Experiments on modulation automatic recognition combined with previous deep convolutional neural network models show that most feature extraction models have low recognition accuracy under a low signal-to-noise ratio, and the problems of more model parameters and high computational complexity are ignored while pursuing high recognition accuracy, so the research focuses on adaptive noise reduction and balancing model accuracy and computational complexity. A lightweight convolutional neural network model based on adaptive noise reduction is proposed, and a phase accumulation method based on forward propagation is proposed to enhance the feature representation of signal samples in the training concentration and an adaptive noise reduction module based on attention mechanism to reduce the noise of signal samples, and time-frequency features are extracted serially by a convolutional neural network (CNN) and gated recurrent unit (GRU), and the recognition accuracy of the method is maintained at 0dB signal-to-noise ratio on the benchmark data set, and the recognition rate is more than 87.82%, and the overall recognition accuracy is high, the model parameters are small-scale.

Abstract:A micro vibration signal extraction method based on deep neural network is proposed. Rough surface of vibrating object modulates the illuminating laser wave front and generates speckle pattern, which is recorded by a linear array CMOS and preprocessed and input into a 16-layer convolution neural network (CNN) trained with specially prepared data. The optical experimental setup is analyzed to fulfil the temporal and spatial Shannon sampling theorem. The output audio signals are evaluated with standard algorithms and show enhanced segmental SNR and intelligibility. The effects of different input audio types and quality of raw audio signals are investigated, and the results show that the neural network is robust to the input. The CNN structure is optimized and the results show the performance decrease with the reduction of convolution layers. The performances of three popular deep neural networks are compared and the performance of CNN is better.
Intelligent Modulation Recognition Based on Neural Networks with Sparse Filtering

Abstract:To overcome the disadvantage that the feature extraction in traditional automated modulation recognition is heavily dependent on manual experience, this paper proposes an intelligent modulation recognition algorithm for communication signals, which is based on antinoise processing and sparse filtering convolutional neural network (AN-SF-CNN). The cyclic spectra of modulated signals are calculated, then low-rank representation is performed on cyclic spectra to reduce noises and disturbances existed in signals. After that, before fine-tuning the convolutional neural network, we propose a sparse filtering criterion to conduct the unsupervised pre-train of the network layer-by-layer, so as to improve the generalization performance effectively. Simulation results demonstrate that the average correct classification rate of proposed method can even reach to 94.2% when the signal to noise ratio is 0 dB, it is superior to traditional methods and some popular deep learning methods.

Abstract:Modulation recognition has always been an important task in the development of the cognitive radio. At present, there are two main application methods for signal data, namely, directly using the signal sequence and using some conversions such as constellation diagram. In this paper, the converted contour stella images are adopted as data source for research. The deep learning method has been proposed, which is called Image-based CNN with Attention Model (ICAM). ICAM is based on Residual Neural Network (ResNet). To evaluate the performance of ICAM, we generate a dataset which contains contour stella images involving of 8 kinds of modulation types with signal to noise ratio (SNR) from -6dB to 20dB. Compared with other state-of-the-art image-based methods, which are including those using constellation diagram and contour stellar images, ICAM makes more satisfactory performance. Besides, the Grad-Cam technology is applied to visualize and prove the effectiveness of ICAM.
A Physics-Based Noise Formation Model for Optical Coherence Tomography System Denoising

Abstract:Optical coherence tomography (OCT) as an interferometric imaging technique, suffers from massive noise. Denoisingmethods are applied essentially to improve image quality in OCT community. The conventional methods rely onpost image processing algorithms such as non-local mean filtering, block-matching and 3D filtering algorithm. However, these conventional noise reduction methods could inevitably cause the destruction of image details, reduce the contrast at the edge of OCT images, and result in a degeneration of image quality. Current deep learning methods often ignorethespecificity of system, therefore haven’t taken advantages of the unique characteristics of different systems. In this work, we present a deep learning noise reduction method using the network architecture trained from synthetic OCTsignalswith random noise that are generated from the noise formation model characterized by our custom-built specificSD-OCT (Spectrum-Domain optical coherence tomography) system. We analyze the signal formation process and the noisegeneration pathway of our system, thereby enabling the construction of a noise formation model. DN-Unet (DenoisingUnity Network) is applied to train the datasets generated by our proposed noise formation model and the multi-to-singlestrategy is developed to enhance the network capability. Preliminary empirical results collectively showthat the networkcan reach an average of 25 dB signal to noise ratio (SNR) improvement while preserving detail structures, whichdemonstrates the effectiveness of our noise reduction method. This method has the potential to be adopted byother systems without the need for large number of golden-standard image generation.
Acoustic spatial patterns recognition based on convolutional neural network and acoustic visualization

Abstract:In this work, a convolutional neural network (CNN) is applied to recognize acoustic spatial patterns with the aid of acoustic visualization. The acoustic spatial patterns are obtained by the singular value decomposition of an acoustic radiation operator built with the boundary integral equation. It is to explore the powerful capability of the CNN in the image processing by analogously rendering the measured acoustic spatial patterns into images. Due to practical limitations, a higher resolution of an acoustic image is achieved by interpolating the pressure on a coarse grid. Steady-state analysis of acoustic problems is a complex domain problem. The acoustic fields are then supplied into a CNN scheme as two-channel data which are real and imaginary components of the pressure. Random noises and incident waves with varying energy are added to the measured data to simulate influences from uncorrelated and correlated noises, respectively. It is demonstrated that once the CNN scheme is built and trained with adequate data, which is numerically synthesized, the patterns can be more accurately and robustly recognized by comparing it with the cross-correlation based methods. The hierarchical feature representative as well as nonlinear perception makes the proposed method a promising approach for fault diagnosis and condition monitoring based on spatial acoustic measurements.

Abstract:International Journal of Pattern Recognition and Artificial Intelligence, Ahead of Print. Neural networks, including conventional neural networks (CNNs) and long- and short-term memory (LSTM) networks, have gained considerable attention in recent years due to their remarkable ability to recognize signals, which make them an ideal option for communication applications in aquatic environments. Despite the promising results achieved through the integration of various algorithms and CNN-LSTM networks, the utilization of these networks necessitates a significant amount of data for training which results in increased complexity of recognition systems. Therefore, it is crucial to explore new solutions that can mitigate these issues while also enhancing the overall performance of underwater acoustic communication systems. Therefore, this paper proposes a VCB framework that integrates the variational modal decomposition (VMD) algorithm, CNN and Bidirectional LSTM (BiLSTM) networks. This framework employs the VMD algorithm to extract energy characteristics from signals that are modulated by filter bank multi-carrier (FBMC) technologies. One-dimensional convolution (Conv1D) is then employed to extract the abstract features, which are subsequently fed into LSTM for time correlation analysis, from the energy values at each time step. Experimental results indicate that the neural network framework utilized in this study significantly diminishes data volume and enhances the recognition rate of FBMC signals, resulting in a lower bit error rate (BER).

Side Scan Sonar Segmentation Using Deep Convolutional Neural Network

Abstract:Side scan sonar (SSS) is a vital sensor for autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) to do ocean survey. Many methods have been proposed to carry out SSS image segmentation, among which machine learning algorithms provide outstanding performance. Machine learning algorithms like support vector machine (SVM) and convolutional neural networks (CNN) are the most used. When SVM is used to do pixel-level classification or segmentation, image features should be chosen based on researchers' experience. So the result may be not the optimal one. On the other hand, deep CNN can extract features of images automatically through its special architecture and can capture highly nonlinear mappings between inputs and outputs. Therefore, in this paper, we propose to use deep CNN to segment images of SSS into three parts: highlight areas with objects, regions of shadow and sea-bottom reverberation areas. The CNN used in this paper is derived from fully convolutional networks (FCN) which is trained by manually segmented sonar data, takes patches of the same size as inputs while training and outputs the segmentation results of images directly. It is an end-to-end architecture which can output segmentation results of side scan sonar images with any size after training. Then we post-process the results of CNN by using Markov random fields (MRF). Experimental results demonstrate that segmentation method based on CNN and MRF is applicable in SSS image segmentation.
PCNN: A Lightweight Parallel Conformer Neural Network for Efficient Monaural Speech Enhancement

Abstract:Convolutional neural networks (CNN) and Transformer have wildly succeeded in multimedia applications. However, more effort needs to be made to harmonize these two architectures effectively to satisfy speech enhancement. This paper aims to unify these two architectures and presents a Parallel Conformer for speech enhancement. In particular, the CNN and the self-attention (SA) in the Transformer are fully exploited for local format patterns and global structure representations. Based on the small receptive field size of CNN and the high computational complexity of SA, we specially designed a multi-branch dilated convolution (MBDC) and a self-channel-time-frequency attention (Self-CTFA) module. MBDC contains three convolutional layers with different dilation rates for the feature from local to non-local processing. Experimental results show that our method performs better than state-of-the-art methods in most evaluation criteria while maintaining the lowest model parameters.

Abstract:Recent convolutional neural networks (CNNs)-based image processing methods have proven that CNNs are good at extracting features of spatial data. In this letter, we present a CNN-based modulation recognition framework for the detection of radio signals in communication systems. Since the frequency variation with time is the most important distinction among radio signals with different modulation types, we transform 1-D radio signals into spectrogram images using the short-time discrete Fourier transform. Furthermore, we analyze statistical features of the radio signals and use a Gaussian filter to reduce noise. We compare the proposed CNN framework with two existing methods from literature in terms of recognition accuracy and computational complexity. The experiments show that the proposed CNN architecture with spectrogram images as signal representation achieves better recognition accuracy than existing deep learning-based methods.

Modulation Classification Based On Denoising Autoencoder And Convolutional Neural Network With Gnu Radio

Abstract:In this article, a machine learning method to classify signal with Gaussian noise based on denoising auto encoder (DAE) and convolutional neural network (CNN) is proposed. We combine denoising autoencoder's denoising ability with CNN's feature extraction capability. First, a six-layer neural network is built, including three CNN layers. Then a dataset containing noiseless signal of 11 modulation is generated. In the simulation, we apply this dataset to train neural network and achieve an accuracy of 94%, which is much higher than performance with noisy signal, meaning that noise can greatly influence the accuracy of neural network. Next, we build a denoising autoencoder and train it with signal of 5dB signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Compared with neural network without denoising autoencoder, adding a denoising autoencoder can achieve an accuracy of 84% at signal of 18dB SNR, improved by 58%.

Abstract:Most binaural speech source localization models perform poorly in unprecedentedly noisy and reverberant situations. Here, this issue is approached by modelling a multiscale dilated convolutional neural network (CNN). The time-related crosscorrelation function (CCF) and energy-related interaural level differences (ILD) are preprocessed in separate branches of dilated convolutional network. The multiscale dilated CNN can encode discriminative representations for CCF and ILD, respectively. After encoding, the individual interaural representations are fused to map source direction. Furthermore, in order to improve the parameter adaptation, a novel semiadaptive entropy is proposed to train the network under directional constraints. Experimental results show the proposed method can adaptively locate speech sources in simulated noisy and reverberant environments.

Abstract:Improving intelligibility of a speech signal of interest from its observations (with a single microphone) corrupted by additive noise has long been a challenging problem. Motivated by important findings achieved in the psychoacoustic field, we propose in this work a deep learning based method to render the noise and desired speech in the perceptual space such that the perception of the desired speech is least affected by the noise. Specifically, we adopt the temporal convolutional network (TCN) based structure to map the single-channel noisy observations into two binaural signals, one for the left ear and the other for the right ear. The TCN is trained in such a way that the desired speech and noise will be perceived to be in opposite directions when the listener listens to the binaural signals. This antiphasic binaural presentation enables the listener to better distinguish the desired speech from the annoying noise for improved speech intelligibility. The modified rhyme test is performed for evaluation and the results justify the superiority of the proposed method for speech intelligibility improvement.
