Abstract:Accurate prediction of welding residual stresses is often challenging due to the complexity of the welding process which includes moving heat source, temperature-dependent material properties etc. Over the past two decades or so, the numerical simulation technologies have been widely used in the welding process and a number of numerical models have been proposed to predict temperature field and residual stresses field induce by welding process. In the previous numerical simulations, the weldment was either in Free State or rigidly constrained. Such manipulations can not reflect the realistic constraint conditions of the weldment. In this simulation, clamps and backing board are all included in the model as elastic body and analytical rigid body, respectively. In the thermal analysis, the thermolysis of clamps and backing board can be equivalent to forced convection heat transfer, where the coefficients of forced convection heat transfer are temperature dependent; in the mechanical analysis, both the contact interaction between clamps and weldment and the contact interaction between backing board and weldment are considered, normal and tangent contact interaction properties are assumed as "HARD" contact and Coulomb friction, respectively. After welding process, residual compressive plastic strains existing in the weld zone and HAZ are the sources of residual stresses. Post welding cold rolling is an effective and convenient method to reduce residual compressive plastic strains induces by welding especially for thin-walled structure. In the previous researches, either welding process and cold rolling process were treated as two separate processes or only the residual stresses induced by welding process was considered as initial condition in the cold rolling process. In this simulation, welding residual stresses, plastic strains and deformations are all imported as the initial state of the cold rolling process to increase the accuracy of the numerical simulation. The import of plastic strains will affect the accuracy of the numerical simulation for the material which has obvious work harden effect.
