Abstract:Load balancing and fault tolerance are two key concerns when developing distributed computing applications. The emergence of grid computing environments extends this problem. Based on distributed scheduling architecture, a grid service oriented scheduling model is proposed to enable load balancing in this paper. In this model, the functionalities are characterized by fault tolerance, and implemented by applying intelligent agent technology. Degree of credit is introduced to make that a decision of grid service selection, service instance selection/migration and service instance redundancy, context agents are responsible for sensing the context of grid, and balance agents are enforced to automatically serve the scheduler for dynamic load adjustment and service-level fault tolerance. Between agents, information exchange is conducted via an agent communication language.

The dynamic characteristic and scalability of grid is introduced and analyzed, especially the important factors in modeling grid service. Abstract:Grid computing is becoming a new computing infrastructure for large-scale scientific computation and cooperative work. The Globus toolkit is the most popular grid environment and de facto grid standard, and it has adopted OGSA architecture to provide applications with grid service level. This study focuses on the requirement for scientists in engineering computation field and narrows the gap between grid service and the engineering community. The engineering computation architecture supplies the users with a visual application development and deployment environment for engineering computation. The whole is characterized by grid service. At the same time, QoS driven user-centric scheduling, community-based efficient authorization and flexible task management are designed and implemented.

Abstract:To make full use of grid resources and to meet users' requirements, efficient scheduling is a key concern in grid environments. Aiming at grid-based engineering computation applications, this paper proposes a Quality of Service (QoS) driven user-centric scheduling strategy. Firstly, degree of credit and degree of guarantee are defined, and aggregate utility ratio is modeled as a composite QoS; Secondly, for different types of grid users, two scheduling methods and steering-enabled visual interfaces are presented, respectively; Thirdly, four performance metrics and aggregate utility ratio are visualized to facilitate the user's interaction with scheduling; Finally, corresponding post-scheduling mechanisms are designed to cope with scenarios where scheduled tasks could not obtain expected QoS. This study is part of a grid project, MASSIVE, and the experiments show that the visual scheduling strategy presented is suitable for computational grids.

Abstract:Equipment grid aims to facilitate easy access to expensive scientific instruments by, grid services and consists of the following, three components: service pool alliance, service pool, and geographically distributed physical instruments. When users submit experiments to equipment grid, service pool alliance will allocate instruments in related service pools to conduct the experiments, which may need coordination and cooperation of several physical instruments that constitute service chains. After experiments have finished and results have returned, users evaluate the performance of related service chains. In this work, a scheduling algorithm using provenance information is proposed to enhance performance of equipment grid by increasing dispatch probability of instruments with high QoS. In this algorithm, we express QoS of instruments and user appraisals in fuzzy linguistic values, taking the vagueness of user opinions on experiment results and various criteria to evaluate instrument QoS into account. Simulation results show that with this algorithm, equipment grid can better satisfy the users.

Abstract:To deal with the load balancing and fault tolerance in grid computing environment, a distributed scheduling model oriented to tradition and grid service execution mechanisms was proposed. In this model, redundancy and intelligent Agent were applied to enable service-level load balancing and fault tolerance, whilst operation process of the task-level case was considered. To improve the scheduling efficiency, a new definition, degree of credit, was introduced to concisely denote availability of grid resources and grid services, and it was also an important parameter in decision-making and Agent implementation. Context Agents were responsible for sensing the context of the grid, and balance Agents were enforced to automatically serve as the scheduler for dynamic load adjustment and fault tolerance. Among Agents, information exchanges were conducted via an Agent communication language. Corresponding simulation tests were implemented and their results indicated that this model and its supplementary mechanisms were suitable to grid environments.

Abstract:This paper proposes an Extensible Monitoring and Discovery Service for grid environment MASSIVE (MEMDS). The MASSIVE project focuses on developing a multidisciplinary applications-oriented simulation and visualization environment. In the MEMDS, appropriate mechanisms make custom information services established and deployed easily, and the developed APIs simplify the access to the MDS and provide a uniform interface for programmers. Corresponding practices show that the MEMDS improves the extensibility and flexibility of the grid information service.

Abstract:Resource co-allocation is a crucial but challenging problem for Grid Computing. With the emergence of WS-Resource Framework and Open Grid Services Architecture, resource co-allocation is commonly associated with a service level agreement (SLA) to determine the achieved QoS level. In this paper, we present an approach for resource co-allocation in Multi-cluster Grid that maximizes the user satisfaction degree while satisfying the QoS requirements defined in a SLA. The QoS metrics considered in this paper include deadline, cluster availability, service reliability and budget. Experimental results are presented to show the effectiveness of our approach.

Abstract:QoS (Quality of Service) guarantee has emerged as one of the most important technologies for the grid computing. Because the existing QoS control systems focus on designing independent executive management system, some problems still remain to be addressed, including low efficiency, bad scalability, and inadequate QoS automatic control. To address the above problems, this paper presents a novel SLA-driven system framework with verification and planning for QoS. The framework integrates functions of executive management with system services, achieves the optimization of system monitoring & management and automatic QoS control through a novel automatic combination of services, and scales well. The system framework with verification and planning for QoS is applied to heuristic scheduling to improve the Min-Min algorithm. An illustrative example and experimental results show that the system framework with verification and planning for QoS can effectively improve the efficiency of monitoring and management for QoS and facilitate automatic QoS control.

Abstract:OGSA-compliant Grid Computing has emerged as an important technology for large scale service sharing and integration. However, the management of massive, distributed, heterogeneous, and dynamic Grid services is becoming increasingly complex. This paper proposes a model of agent-enabling autonomic Grid service system to relieve the management burdens such as configuration, deployment, discovery, composition, and monitoring of Grid services. We adopt intelligent agents as autonomic elements to manage Grid services from two aspects: internal management and external transaction and cooperation. On the one hand, within an autonomic element (agent), goal-based planning and scheduling mechanism autonomously (re-) configures, and monitors the enforcement of, managed elements (Grid services or other agents). On the other hand, the automated discovery, negotiation, and contract-based service providing and monitoring among various agents treat with the relationships among autonomic elements.

Abstract:A uniform and efficient service model is very important to integrate conveniently heterogeneous grid resources, to improve the efficiency of grid applications, and to facilitate consumers to use grid resources. This paper introduces the open grid service architecture (OGSA), proposes a service model based on OGSA, investigates service publication, discovery, invocation and security mechanisms in the model, and validates the feasibility of the model by an application. Thus, the model provides powerful support for commercial grid applications.

Abstract:Based on Web Services and grid technology, a structure of virtual organization (VO) in favor of co-operative services was studied, and an entity model of members of Grid-based VO and a really dynamic model of VO applicable to Grid Technology-an abstract model of VO holding with wide world/region scheduling service center was constructed. According to this model, a practical network model of VO structure based on Open Grid Service Architecture (OGSA) was constructed finally, a key technology of VO co-operative service was brought forward and solved, and rules of task scheduling satisfied with both network services required and the least service cost was brought forward.

Abstract:In recent years, extensive research has been conducted in the area of Service Level Agreement (SLA) for utility computing systems. An SLA is a formal contract used to guarantee that consumers’ service quality expectation can be achieved. In utility computing systems, the level of customer satisfaction is crucial, making SLAs significantly important in these environments. Fundamental issue is the management of SLAs, including SLA autonomy management or trade off among multiple Quality of Service (QoS) parameters. Many SLA languages and frameworks have been developed as solutions; however, there is no overall classification for these extensive works. Therefore, the aim of this chapter is to present a comprehensive survey of how SLAs are created, managed and used in utility computing environment. We discuss existing use cases from Grid and Cloud computing systems to identify the level of SLA realization in state-of-art systems and emerging challenges for future research.

Abstract:With the wide application of Web services, its performance has caused the extensive concern and becomes one of the key factors of determining whether it is widely applied further. Based on the idea of differentiating Web services, the paper presents a SLA-based Web services performance guarantee model to improve Web services runtime environment, and expatiates on the key techniques of realizing the model: the request class utility function, the predicting model of response time, the genetic algorithm-based resource allocation and the dynamic weight-based weighted round-robin scheduling algorithm. Experiments prove the model can guarantee the response performance of Web services requests and improve the stability of the system.

Abstract:In contrast to the existing optimization services lacking support to general optimization requests of users and flexible approaches to resource sharing,a computing service system is proposed to take advantage of the grid environment and enable computational resources in the network to provide service oriented optimization in parallel and cooperative mode.Dynamic task scheduling algorithm is designed to adapt the system to typical characters of complex process system optimization and grid environment.Accordingly,the system manages its tasks and resources through multi-task-queues and groups of computing nodes,respectively,which is the base of the realization of its scheduling strategy.Testing results have demonstrated good performance of the optimization service system with such scheduling algorithm,and provided reference for designing efficient parallel algorithms running in the system.
