Abstract:Load balancing and fault tolerance are two key concerns when developing distributed computing applications. The emergence of grid computing environments extends this problem. Based on distributed scheduling architecture, a grid service oriented scheduling model is proposed to enable load balancing in this paper. In this model, the functionalities are characterized by fault tolerance, and implemented by applying intelligent agent technology. Degree of credit is introduced to make that a decision of grid service selection, service instance selection/migration and service instance redundancy, context agents are responsible for sensing the context of grid, and balance agents are enforced to automatically serve the scheduler for dynamic load adjustment and service-level fault tolerance. Between agents, information exchange is conducted via an agent communication language.

Abstract:To deal with the load balancing and fault tolerance in grid computing environment, a distributed scheduling model oriented to tradition and grid service execution mechanisms was proposed. In this model, redundancy and intelligent Agent were applied to enable service-level load balancing and fault tolerance, whilst operation process of the task-level case was considered. To improve the scheduling efficiency, a new definition, degree of credit, was introduced to concisely denote availability of grid resources and grid services, and it was also an important parameter in decision-making and Agent implementation. Context Agents were responsible for sensing the context of the grid, and balance Agents were enforced to automatically serve as the scheduler for dynamic load adjustment and fault tolerance. Among Agents, information exchanges were conducted via an Agent communication language. Corresponding simulation tests were implemented and their results indicated that this model and its supplementary mechanisms were suitable to grid environments.

Abstract:This paper proposes an Extensible Monitoring and Discovery Service for grid environment MASSIVE (MEMDS). The MASSIVE project focuses on developing a multidisciplinary applications-oriented simulation and visualization environment. In the MEMDS, appropriate mechanisms make custom information services established and deployed easily, and the developed APIs simplify the access to the MDS and provide a uniform interface for programmers. Corresponding practices show that the MEMDS improves the extensibility and flexibility of the grid information service.

Abstract:Selecting appropriate resources for running a job efficiently is one of the common objectives in a computational grid. Resource scheduling should consider the specific characteristics of the application, and decide the metrics to be used accordingly. This paper presents a distributed resource scheduling framework mainly consisting of a job scheduler and a local scheduler. In order to meet the requirements of different applications, we adopt HGSA, a Heuristic-based Greedy Scheduling Algorithm, to schedule jobs in the grid, where the heuristic knowledge is the metric weights of the computing resources and the metric workload impact factors. The metric weight is used to control the effect of the metric on the application. For different applications, only metric weights and the metric workload impact factors need to be changed, while the scheduling algorithm remains the same. Experimental results are presented to demonstrate the adaptability of the HGSA.

Concurrency and Computation Practice and Experience

Abstract:The optimal load redistribution problem is solved in this paper for heterogeneous non‐dedicated service grids in a decentralized way. A coordination policy is proposed to make networked servers reach their optimal generic task acceptance rates in order to minimize the average service time of all the generic tasks in a grid. Autonomous servers networked in the grid only need to coordinate with their neighbors iteratively, and their optimal generic acceptance rates are reached by task migration among them. The design scheme of the policy is introduced, and the convergence properties and the implementation aspects of the coordination system are discussed in detail in this paper. A set of computer simulations have been conducted, validating the effectiveness of the proposed approach. Copyright © 2010 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Abstract:To make full use of grid resources and to meet users' requirements, efficient scheduling is a key concern in grid environments. Aiming at grid-based engineering computation applications, this paper proposes a Quality of Service (QoS) driven user-centric scheduling strategy. Firstly, degree of credit and degree of guarantee are defined, and aggregate utility ratio is modeled as a composite QoS; Secondly, for different types of grid users, two scheduling methods and steering-enabled visual interfaces are presented, respectively; Thirdly, four performance metrics and aggregate utility ratio are visualized to facilitate the user's interaction with scheduling; Finally, corresponding post-scheduling mechanisms are designed to cope with scenarios where scheduled tasks could not obtain expected QoS. This study is part of a grid project, MASSIVE, and the experiments show that the visual scheduling strategy presented is suitable for computational grids.

Abstract:Resource co-allocation is a crucial but challenging problem for Grid Computing. With the emergence of WS-Resource Framework and Open Grid Services Architecture, resource co-allocation is commonly associated with a service level agreement (SLA) to determine the achieved QoS level. In this paper, we present an approach for resource co-allocation in Multi-cluster Grid that maximizes the user satisfaction degree while satisfying the QoS requirements defined in a SLA. The QoS metrics considered in this paper include deadline, cluster availability, service reliability and budget. Experimental results are presented to show the effectiveness of our approach.

Abstract:OGSA-compliant Grid Computing has emerged as an important technology for large scale service sharing and integration. However, the management of massive, distributed, heterogeneous, and dynamic Grid services is becoming increasingly complex. This paper proposes a model of agent-enabling autonomic Grid service system to relieve the management burdens such as configuration, deployment, discovery, composition, and monitoring of Grid services. We adopt intelligent agents as autonomic elements to manage Grid services from two aspects: internal management and external transaction and cooperation. On the one hand, within an autonomic element (agent), goal-based planning and scheduling mechanism autonomously (re-) configures, and monitors the enforcement of, managed elements (Grid services or other agents). On the other hand, the automated discovery, negotiation, and contract-based service providing and monitoring among various agents treat with the relationships among autonomic elements.

Abstract:Service is accepted as an effective way for mobile ad hoc communications and collaboration in ubiquitous computing environments. Although many effort have been devoted on the service discovery protocols, fewer works focus on the problem of service selection when the same service is provided by multiple mobile notes. However, the service selection result can greatly affect the system performance thus should be paid more attention. In this paper, we present an integrated service selection approach. Experiment results show that our approaches can achieve better overall result compared with the existing works.

Abstract:Service oriented architecture is expected to be implemented as an effective way for mobile ad hoc communications and collaboration in ubiquitous computing environments. Much effort has been devoted on the service discovery protocols, while fewer works focus on the problem of service selection. The approaches proposed in previous works of service selection are mostly hop based approaches which aim at reducing the average response time. However the network lifetime which measures the durability of the network is also of great importance and should be paid more attention. In this paper, we first present a definition of the network lifetime from the aspect of the service oriented architecture. Then, a heuristic approach to service selection which focuses on optimizing the network lifetime is proposed. Experiments results prove the approach can significantly prolong the network lifetime while at the same time achieve comparably short average response time.

Abstract:With the wide application of Web services, its performance has caused the extensive concern and becomes one of the key factors of determining whether it is widely applied further. Based on the idea of differentiating Web services, the paper presents a SLA-based Web services performance guarantee model to improve Web services runtime environment, and expatiates on the key techniques of realizing the model: the request class utility function, the predicting model of response time, the genetic algorithm-based resource allocation and the dynamic weight-based weighted round-robin scheduling algorithm. Experiments prove the model can guarantee the response performance of Web services requests and improve the stability of the system.

Abstract:Mobile business is now becoming into reality with the ubiquitous Internet connectivity, the powerful of mobile devices and the vast amount of available cloud services. However, the characteristics of mobile environment such as mobility, unpredictability and variation of the signal-strength of mobile network bring great challenges for the selection of optimal services for orchestration. Traditional Qos-aware methods selecting services with the best QoS may not always result in a best orchestration as the constant mobility makes the performance of service invocation unpredictable and location-based. This work-in-progress paper presents the challenges of this problem and defines the problem in a formal way. After that, it proposes a service selection approach based on negative selection algorithm to address this problem.

Abstract:This paper proposes a kind of grid resource discovery model which is compartmentalized into three layers including ordinary node layer, super node layer and directory node layer, in order to reduce network traffic and enhance communications efficiency. In this model, mobile Agent is used to carry on the interaction between two layers. On the super node layer and the directory node layer, LDAP directory servers acts as a unified interface of the grid information's storage and access, and the metadata of ontology's concept cluster is used to describe the node information in the leaf nodes of the LDAP directory server. Thus, by using the LDAP directory structure, the ontology is introduced and a semantic grid of spatial information is constructed in order to enhance the intelligence of the grid resource discovery and obtain a better result. At last, resources' registration process in the LDAP server and the step of resource discovery is described.

Abstract:In recent years, extensive research has been conducted in the area of Service Level Agreement (SLA) for utility computing systems. An SLA is a formal contract used to guarantee that consumers’ service quality expectation can be achieved. In utility computing systems, the level of customer satisfaction is crucial, making SLAs significantly important in these environments. Fundamental issue is the management of SLAs, including SLA autonomy management or trade off among multiple Quality of Service (QoS) parameters. Many SLA languages and frameworks have been developed as solutions; however, there is no overall classification for these extensive works. Therefore, the aim of this chapter is to present a comprehensive survey of how SLAs are created, managed and used in utility computing environment. We discuss existing use cases from Grid and Cloud computing systems to identify the level of SLA realization in state-of-art systems and emerging challenges for future research.
