Software Internationalization and Localization: an Industrial Experience

Abstract:Software internationalization and localization are important steps in distributing and deploying software to different regions of the world. Internationalization refers to the process of reengineering a system such that it could support various languages and regions without further modification. Localization refers to the process of adapting an internationalized software for a specific language or region. Due to various reasons, many large legacy systems did not consider internationalization and localization at the early stage of development. In this paper, we present our experience on, and propose a process along with tool supports for software internationalization and localization. We reengineer a large legacy commercial financial system called PAM of State Street Corporation, which is written in C/C++, containing 30 different modules, and more than 5 millions of lines of source code. We propose a source code ranker that recovers important source code to be analyzed. Based on this code, we extract general patterns of the source code that need to be reengineered for internationalization. We divide the patterns into 2 categories: convertible patterns and suspicious patterns. To locate the source code that need to be modified, we develop an automated tool I18nLocator, that consumes these patterns and outputs the locations that match the patterns. The source codes matching the convertible patterns are automatically converted, and those matching the suspicious patterns are converted by developers considering the context of the corresponding codes. For localization, we extract hard-coded strings, translate them, and store them into resource data files. Out of the 504 thousands of lines of source code that are modified using our proposed approach, we can automatically modify 79.76% of them, saving much valuable developers' time. The quality of the resultant system is also good. The number of bugs per lines of code modified found during user acceptance test and deployment to the production environment is 0.000218 bugs/LOC.

Abstract:Based on many achievements and experiences in artificial intelligence and software engineering about program design automation, a new special-domain and stepwise intelligent development method is proposed in this paper. Referencing to the lifecycle method and the prototype method, the intelligent developments of detail design, outline design and requirement analysis are discussed in detail successively. Then the relations among those three intelligent development steps are explained clearly. Finally, the characteristics and the advantages of this method are analyzed in depth, which shows that it is a feasible development way for intelligent information system.

Abstract:Information technologies and information systems play an increasingly important role in gaining and sustaining competitive edge for enterprises. A large quantity of Chinese enterprises endeavored to establish or upgrade their information systems. However, the failure rate of such projects remains high in China. There have been a large number of analyses of critical factors of information system projects in the literature, and this paper attempts to categorize the critical failure factors mentioned in the literature and to do a questionnaire survey accordingly. The survey is conducted in Zhejiang Province of China, to understand which failure factors are perceived as the most influential by the respondents.

Abstract:The unique information sharing requirements of domestic small and medium-sized enterprises were studied to optimize the information technology systems.A net-based enterprise information integration system was developed using Java 2 enterprise edition(J2EE) and extensible markup language(XML) with a 2D/3D collaborative viewing and mark-up tool.Two versions of the system(one for individual enterprises and one for enterprise alliances) were successfully developed. The system effectively integrates heterogeneous information to enable enterprises to work collaboratively on product development and commerce in a network environment.The system has good openness,expansibility and maintainability because of the four-tier browser/server system architecture.

Abstract:Driven by the difficult business environment, nowadays enterprises more and more resort to information technology to manage nearly everything internal and to conduct business activities. This puts forward high requirements on information systems and in turn, raises a great challenge to software vendors. In this paper, an enterprise information infrastructure (EII), which delivers some common functions to management and business, is proposed for software vendors to rapidly develop various enterprise information systems while at a cost as low as possible. The paper details the philosophy behind EII and explains its approaches to integration, automation and business agility. A scenario is also presented illustrating the usage of EII.

Abstract:We use a time-dependent dynamical mean-field-hydrodynamic model to study mixing-demixing in a degenerate fermion-fermion mixture (DFFM). It is demonstrated that with the increase of interspecies repulsion and/or trapping frequencies, a mixed state of DFFM could turn into a fully demixed state in both three-dimensional spherically-symmetric as well as quasi-one-dimensional configurations. Such a demixed state of a DFFM could be experimentally realized by varying an external magnetic field near a fermion-fermion Feshbach resonance, which will result in an increase of interspecies fermion-fermion repulsion, and/or by increasing the external trap frequencies.

Abstract:Facing the great challenges from various changes, the traditional enterprise information system is becoming obsolescent. The timely response to market changes has become the competitive advantage. In this paper, business component-based development of modem enterprise information system is studied. Based on the business component and its technology, business component-based software development process is proposed. A clustering algorithm is used to identify the business components from requirement model and a rules library is used to assemble the business components to a business application. Component-based hierarchy architecture of enterprise information system is established, which are software infrastructure layer, middleware container layer, business entity layer, business process layer and application interface layer. The business component-based enterprise information system has the rapid reconfigurability, reusability and extensibility to adapt itself to the changes of business environment.

Abstract:Because of the lack of methodology, there are many difficulties in the requirement analysis phase and system design phase of the enterprise information engineering. An enterprise business driven method of the analysis of information system’s business requirement, utilizing enterprise modeling, is proposed based on the idea of the total solution of enterprise informatization. Utilizing the method of Quality Function Deployment (QFD) to link the business requirement with the function structure of information system, the implementation approach and decision principle are also proposed for the requirement anaylsis phase and the initial design phase of the information engineering.

Abstract:It is estimated that the success rate of IT project maintain below 30%, and this figure are even lower in china. There must be some common factors that led to an unsuccessful project. This paper tries to treat the problem with following method. Firstly, we give the criteria of a failure project based on the research of the definition of success, and extract five major factors that contribute to the failure on the basis of the related literature, then establish the model on software failure; secondly, we collect the data via questionnaires and have interviews with project managers; thirdly, we use the Structural Equation Model to analyse those data, and draw conclusions. At last, we give summary of which are the most important factors that contribute to the failure, and also give some suggestions to avoid the failure of software project.

Abstract:China and the European Union both face the challenge of building dynamic and internationally focused knowledge economies. Information Technology (IT) is a key enabler of such economies and IT education must be at the forefront of any strategy to meet the challenges of building them. Recognising this, the School of Computing in Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT), Ireland, the National Pilot School of Software in Harbin Institute of Technology (HIT), China, and the School of Computing and Information Technology in the University of Wolverhampton (UW), United Kingdom, established a collaboration which resulted in the EMERSION (Education to Meet the Requirements of Software Industry and Beyond - Establishing, Implementing and Evaluating an Industry-Oriented Education Model in China) project. This project designed, implemented, and evaluated an education model with an industrial ethos to deliver sustainable, high-quality, and effective IT education in HIT. The project was completed in 2006, and this chapter presents a review of the main lessons that emerged from it.
Research on project risk generation mechanism for small and medium software enterprises

Abstract:Base on literatures review and interview with managers of small and medium software enterprises, this paper identify 6 significant regressive risk factors of software projects (external user demand, technical development, project interface, organization management, internal communication, scheme implementation and risk consequences) and find out 23 key risk variables in projects of the small and medium software enterprises. After collecting questionnaires from 31 software enterprises of the East China region, we analyze questionnaire data by statistical method, including descriptive statistics, factor analysis and regression analysis. Then we use Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) to describe the path relationships between risk factors and risk consequences in projects of the small and medium software enterprises, and find out the risk generation mechanism of projects. The results of analysis reveal that not all risk factors have direct effects on project risk consequences, and several risk factors changes influence the consequences via some other factors indirectly.
