Abstract:In recent years, we have witnessed in China a trend of growing research activities in Grid and cooperative computing. Thousands of staff and graduate students nationwide are involved in research and development activities in this area. Dr M. A. Songde, Deputy Minister of Science and Technology of China, explained why: ‘When we review the history of human civilization, especially the advances of science and technology in the past century, we can make the following observation: although the source that triggered significant changes in our society might be the invention of some novel product, such as steam engine, electricity generator, telephone, and computer, the real changes, the massive effect, must rely on the availability of a Grid of related products and services, or a Grid-enabled infrastructure. The vision of computational Grid and the active international research in this area, enable us to see, with increasing clarity, the emergence of a new infrastructure for the coming Information Society. This new infrastructure will not only bring revolutionary and structural changes to the ways we obtain, distribute, transmit, and efficiently use information resources, but also fundamentally change the ways we do research, education, work, and live our lives.’. Publicly funded Grid research started in China around 1999, when the Ministry of Science and Technology of China, through its National High-Tech Program (the 863 Program), funded a two-year project to develop a testbed of a National High-Performance Computing Environment, to explore Grid technology and related applications. Starting from 2002, more government agencies became involved. The National High-Tech Program funded a comprehensive four-year project called China National Grid (CNGrid). The Ministry of Education of China started a multi-phase project called China Education and Research Grid (ChinaGrid). The National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) launched a four-year project called ‘Network-Based Scientific Research Environment’. The National Basic Research Program of China (the 973 Program) recently funded two five-year projects related to Grid and cooperative computing, focusing on the Semantic Grid and the Virtual Computing Environment. Grid research in China has exhibited several characteristics as follows.
