Abstract:PLL frequency synthesizers with low jitter are essential for mm-Wave high-speed wireless communication systems and data converters. By doing away with the frequency doubler, low jitter synthesizers with the 2 ND harmonic output can simplify their architecture. Additionally, to produce high-quality local oscillator signals for 2ND harmonic output, it is beneficial to suppress the fundamental frequency component at 2 ND harmonic output. In general, lowering the voltagecontrolled oscillator's phase noise (PN) and reducing the PLL's bandwidth to suppress in-band noise are the two most popular ways to minimize PN of PLL. The phase noise of N-core VCO reduce PN by 10logN, which is an effective method for obtaining low PN. Additionally, increasing the reference clock frequency hence decreasing the loop frequency division ratio can decrease PN. Literature [1] used a reference clock frequency of 500MHz with 175mW to implement the PLL of 52-fs <inf xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">rms</inf> Jitter. Ref. [2] adopted a folded transformer-based series resonance CMOS VCO, the PN of which achieved -130.8dBc/Hz@1MHz, consumed 242mW while reducing the core area. Ref. [3] uses a clock frequency of 250MHz to reduce the overall contribution of VCO through wideband PLL, while suppressing the noise introduced by the reference clock through the design of double-sampling phase detector (SPD). Ref. [4] uses the high gain of phase-frequency detector (PFD) with time amplification to suppress the gain of CP, thus achieving the performance of 60-fs <inf xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">rms</inf> Jitter. This study presents the construction of a PLL based on a 4-core resistance-synchronized VCO that achieves 47-fs <inf xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">rms</inf> Jitter and produces 2 ND harmonic with fundamental frequency suppression.
