Abstract:In this paper, we consider the structure of compactly supported wavelets. And we prove that any wavelet matrix (the polyphase matrix of the scaling filter and wavelet filters) can be factored as the product of fundamental biorthgonal matrices and a constant valued matrix.

Abstract:Polyphase matrix extension of multiscaling vectors is a fundamental approach for the construction of compactly supported biorthogonal multiwavelets. In this paper, canonical form of polyphase matrices of multiscaling vectors and some properties of solutions satisfying the matrix equation of PR condition are studied through unimodular groups over the Laurent polynomial ring. Under the canonical form of polyphase matrices of multiscaling vectors with the same symmetric center and different symmetric centers, explicit symmetric extension formulas expressed by the polyphase matrices of multiscaling vectors can be obtained. As a result, a novel approach for the construction of symmetric compactly supported biorthogonal multiwavelets with multiplicity 2 is proposed. Finally, several examples are given for verification of our proposed approach.

Abstract:Biorthogonal multiple wavelets are generated from refinable function vectors by using the multiresolution analysis. In this paper we provide a general method for the construction of compactly supported biorthogonal multiple wavelets by refinable function vectors which are the solutions of vector refinement equations of the form φ (x) = ∑_α∈ℤ^s a(α )φ (Mx - α ), x ∈ℝ^s , where the vector of functions ϕ = ( ϕ 1 , …, ϕ r ) T is in (L_2 (ℝ^s ))^r ,a = :(a(α ))_α∈ℤ^s is a finitely supported sequence of r × r matrices called the refinement mask, and M is an s × s integer matrix such that lim n →∞ M − n = 0. Our characterizations are in the general setting and the main results of this paper are the real extensions of some known results.

Abstract:In general case, the interpolant in the Walter's wavelet sampling theorem is not necessarily compactly supported. Requiring that it is compactly supported is equivalent to requiring that the corresponding scaling function has the sampling property. Our focus in this paper is on considering the case where the scaling function is not only compactly supported, but also orthogonal and of the sampling property. This paper makes a parameterization of two regular unitary M-band sampling scaling filters of the length 3M, constructs a 3-band sampling scaling function and show that it is not only compactly supported, but also orthogonal and continuous. However, in 2-band case, there is no such scaling function except Haar scaling function. G. Walter's sampling theorem for wavelet subspaces corresponding to this scaling function has the interpolant with compact support. Therefore, the signals in multiresolution subspaces can be reconstructed exactly and fast without truncated errors.

Abstract:In wavelet applications, it is often required that the associated scaling function has advantages such as compact support, orthogonality, linear phase, regularity and interpolation. In the two- and three-band cases, these advantages are incompatible. A novel approach is proposed for designing five-band scaling functions that simultaneously provide the above five advantages, and several interesting examples are presented.

Abstract:This paper presents a novel approach for constructing symmetric compactly supported biorthogonal multiwavelets with short sequences. Starting from the symmetric properties of scaling and wavelet functions, parameterized symmetric forms of the polyphase matrices can be derived, which greatly simplify the construction problem of compactly supported biorthogonal multiwavelets. Moreover, according to the perfect reconstruction matrix equations, the parameters of polyphase matrices can be reduced, which finally leads to our proposed algorithm for the construction of symmetric compactly supported biorthogonal multiwavelets with short sequences.

Abstract:We construct popular biorthogonal wavelet filter banks (BWFBs) having the linear phase and arbitrary multiplicity of vanishing moments (VMs). A novel parametrization construction technique, which is based on the theory of Diophantine equation, is presented and explicit one-parameter expressions of the BWFBs are derived. Using the expressions, any one-parameter family of BWFBs with different VMs can be constructed, and ten families, i.e., 5/7, 6/6, 9/7, 6/10, 5/11, 10/6, 13/7, 6/14, 17/11, and 10/18 families, are constructed here. The free parameter can be used to optimize the resulting BWFBs with respect to other criteria. In particular, in each family, three specific BWFBs with attractive features are obtained by adjusting the free parameter: the first has optimum coding gain and rational coefficients; the second which also has rational coefficients is very close to a quadrature mirror filter (QMF) bank; and the third which has binary coefficients can realize a multiplication-free discrete wavelet transform. In addition, four BWFBs are systematically verified to exhibit performance competitive to several state-of-the-art BWFBs for image compression, and yet require lower computational costs.

Abstract:Recently, 2-band interpolating wavelet transform has attracted much attention. It has the following several features: (i) The wavelet series transform coefficients of a signal in the multiresolution subspace are exactly consistent with its discrete wavelet transform coefficients; (ii) good approximation performance; (iii) efficiency in computation. However orthogonal 2-band compactly supported interpolating wavelet transform is only the first order. In order to overcome this shortcoming, the orthogonal M-band compactly supported interpolating wavelet basis is established. First, the unitary interpolating scaling filters of the lengthL =MK are characterized. Second, a scheme is given to design high-order unitary interpolating scaling filters. Third, a parameterization of the unitary interpolating scaling filters of the lengthL = 4M is made. Fourth, the orthogonal 2-order and 3-order three-band compactly supported interpolating scaling functions are constructed. Finally, the properties of the orthogonal M-band compactly supported interpolating wavelets and the approximation performance of the Mallat projection are discussed. For the smooth signal inL 2(ℝ), the asymptotic formula of the approximation enor of the Mallat projection is obtained, and for the band-limited signal, the quantitative estimate of its upper bounds is given. The results show that the Mallat projection has the same approximation order as the orthogonal projection, and particularly for the orthogonal even number-order M-band compactly supported interpolating scaling function, they have the same approximation performance. The quantitative result also shows that the selection of the initial scale depends on the distribution of the signal frequency and the regularity order of the scaling function. For the given scaling function and signal, using these results one can determine the initial scale and at the same time estimate the initial scaling coefficients without prefiltering according to the error requirement

Abstract:For compactly supported m-band (m greater than or equal to 2, m is an element of Z) orthonormal multiwavelet systems, an algorithm to construct compactly supported orthogonal multiwavelets from the associated multi-scaling functions is presented in this paper. This method is simple for computation, does not need to solve a set of nonlinear equations in unknown matrices or factorize a polynomial matrix into a special form, and is not restrained by the multiplicity of multiwavelets. It only needs to solve some linear equations and compute some matrices. As an example, the GHM multiwavelets are derived via this method.

Abstract:This paper introduces some properties of symmetric Laurent polynomials, and then extends Euclidean algorithm to symmetric Laurent polynomials. The new results are used to investigate factorization of polyphase matrix for biorthogonal finite filters. It is shown that there exists one and only one symmetric factorization of the polyphase matrix, and the symmetric factorization can be determined directly and efficiently by Euclidean algorithm for symmetric Laurent polynomials. Finally, symmetric implementation and matrix representation of biorthogonal wavelet transforms are introduced, and the study demonstrates that the symmetric implementation has the least multiplication number in all lifting implementations, and it is equivalent to a matrix transform on finite dimensional vector space.

Abstract:In this paper, a matrix factorization method is presented for reversible integer M-band wavelet transforms. Based on an algebraic construction of orthonormal M-band wavelets with perfect reconstruction, the polyphase matrix can be factorized into a finite sequence of elementary reversible matrices that map integers to integers reversibly. We show that the reversible integer mapping is essentially equivalent to the lifting scheme, thus we extend the classical lifting scheme to a more flexible framework.

Abstract:Bivariate wavelets have become powerful tool of image processing. We get a method for constructing bivariate nonseparable compactly supported biorthogonal filters. These filters can generate bivariate nonseparable compactly supported biorthogonal scaling functions and the related wavelets based on the theory of bivariate multiresolution analysis. Finally, we give two simple numerical examples of bivariate nonseparable compactly supported biorthogonal filters satisfying the perfect reconstruction condition.

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce biorthogonal multiple vector-valued wavelets which are wavelets for vector fields. We proved that, like in the scalar and multiwavelet case, the existence of a pair of biorthogonal multiple vector-valued scaling functions guarantees the existence of a pair of biorthogonal multiple vector-valued wavelet functions. Finally, we investigate the construction of a class of compactly supported biorthogonal multiple vector-valued wavelets.

Abstract:The symmetric biorthogonal low-pass filters of 4-band and the corresponding scaling functions are constructed by using the sum rules.Also,the symmetric or anti-symmetric biorthogonal wavelet filters of 4-band with high order vanishing moment and short support are obtained.Especially,the coefficients of filter constructed are all rational numbers and their denominators are all binary.Therefore,it is very convenient for these filters to be applied.At last,the smoothness index of the scaling functions constructed can be estimated by the method of Hanbin.
