Abstract:In [Distrance-regular Cayley graphs on dihedral groups, J. Combin. Theory Ser B 97 (2007) 14--33], Miklavi\v{c} and Poto\v{c}nik proposed the problem of characterizing distance-regular Cayley graphs, which can be viewed as an extension of the problem of identifying strongly regular Cayley graphs, or equivalently, regular partial difference sets. In this paper, all distance-regular Cayley graphs over $\mathbb{Z}_{p^s}\oplus\mathbb{Z}_{p}$ with $p$ being an odd prime are determined. It is shown that every such graph is isomorphic to a complete graph, a complete multipartite graph, or the line graph of a transversal design $TD(r,p)$ with $2\leq r\leq p-1$.

Abstract:Let Γ be a triangle-free distance-regular graph with diameter d≥3, valency k≥3 and intersection number a2≠0. Assume Γ has an eigenvalue with multiplicity k. We show that Γ is 1-homogeneous in the sense of Nomura when d=3 or when d≥4 and a4=0. In the latter case we prove that Γ is an antipodal cover of a strongly regular graph, which means that it has diameter 4 or 5. For d=5 the following infinite family of feasible intersection arrays: {2μ2+μ,2μ2+μ−1,μ2,μ,1;1,μ,μ2,2μ2+μ−1,2μ2+μ},μ∈N, is known. For μ=1 the intersection array is uniquely realized by the dodecahedron. For μ≠1 we show that there are no distance-regular graphs with this intersection array.

Abstract:Earlier it was proved that some distance-regular graphs of diameter 3 with c_2=2 do not exist. Distance-regular graph with intersection array {17,16,10;1,2,8} has strongly regular graph _3 (pseudo-geometric graph for the net pG_9(17,9) ). By symmetrizing the arrays of triple intersection numbers, it is proved that the distance-regular graphs with intersection arrays {17,16,10;1,2,8} and {22,21,4;1,2,14} do not exist.

Abstract:Let $\Gamma=\Gamma(A)$ denote a simple strongly connected digraph with vertex set $X$, diameter $D$, and let $\{A_0,A:=A_1,A_2,\ldots,A_D\}$ denote the set of distance-$i$ matrices of $\Gamma$. Let $\{R_i\}_{i=0}^D$ denote a partition of $X\times X$, where $R_i=\{(x,y)\in X\times X\mid (A_i)_{xy}=1\}$ $(0\le i\le D)$. The digraph $\Gamma$ is distance-regular if and only if $(X,\{R_i\}_{i=0}^D)$ is a commutative association scheme. In this paper, we describe the combinatorial structure of $\Gamma$ in the sense of equitable partition, and from it we derive several new algebraic characterizations of such a graph, including the spectral excess theorem for distance-regular digraph. Along the way, we also rediscover all well-known algebraic characterizations of such graphs.

Abstract:Let Γ be an antipodal distance-regular graph of diameter 4, with eigenvalues $$\theta_0>\theta_1>\theta_2>\theta_3>\theta_4$$ . Then its Krein parameter $$q_{11}^4$$ vanishes precisely when Γ is tight in the sense of Jurišić, Koolen and Terwilliger, and furthermore, precisely when Γ is locally strongly regular with nontrivial eigenvalues $$p:=\theta_2$$ and $$-q:=\theta_3$$ . When this is the case, the intersection parameters of Γ can be parametrized by p , q and the size of the antipodal classes r of Γ.Let Γ be an antipodal tight graph of diameter 4, denoted by AT4 (p, q, r) , and let the μ-graph be a graph that is induced by the common neighbours of two vertices at distance 2. Then we show that all the μ-graphs of Γ are complete multipartite if and only if Γ is AT4( sq , q , q ) for some natural number s . As a consequence, we derive new existence conditions for graphs of the AT4 family whose μ-graphs are not complete multipartite. Another interesting application of our results is also that we were able to show that the μ-graphs of a distance-regular graph with the same intersection array as the Patterson graph are the complete bipartite graph K 4,4 .
On distance-regular Cayley graphs over abelian groups of rank $2$

Abstract:The problem of constructing or characterizing strongly regular Cayley graphs (or equivalently, regular partial difference sets) has garnered significant attention over the past half-century. In [European J. Combin. 24 (2023) 777--784], Miklavič and Potočnik expanded upon this field, achieving a complete characterization of distance-regular Cayley graphs over cyclic groups by employing the method of Schur rings. In [J. Combin. Theory Ser. B 97 (2007) 14--33], they formally proposed the problem of characterizing distance-regular Cayley graphs for any given class of groups. In this context, abelian groups are of particular importance, as a considerable number of distance-regular graphs with classical parameters are precisely Cayley graphs over abelian groups. In this paper, we address the Miklavič-Potočnik problem for abelian groups of rank $2$. More specifically, we identify all distance-regular Cayley graphs over the group $\mathbb{Z}_n \oplus \mathbb{Z}_p$, where $p$ is an odd prime. Our proof utilizes novel tools such as polynomial addition sets, Desarguesian affine planes, and the duality of Schur rings over abelian groups.

Abstract:We find that certain distance-regular graphs must contain Pappus subgraphs and, as a corollary, are able to rule out the existence of the last bipartite distance-regular graph of diameter 6 in the tables of [2] for which the existence was still undecided.

Abstract:In this paper we study distance-regular graphs with intersection array (1){(t+1)s,ts,(t-1)(s+1-@j);1,2,(t+1)@j} where s,t,@j are integers satisfying t=2 and 1@?@j@?s. Geometric distance-regular graphs with diameter three and c"2=2 have such an intersection array. We first show that if a distance-regular graph with intersection array (1) exists, then s is bounded above by a function in t. Using this we show that for a fixed integer t=2, there are only finitely many distance-regular graphs of order (s,t) with smallest eigenvalue -t-1, diameter D=3 and intersection number c"2=2 except for Hamming graphs with diameter three. Moreover, we will show that if a distance-regular graph with intersection array (1) for t=2 exists then (s,@j)=(15,9). As Gavrilyuk and Makhnev (2013) [9] proved that the case (s,@j)=(15,9) does not exist, this enables us to finish the classification of geometric distance-regular graphs with smallest eigenvalue -3, diameter D=3 and c"2=2 which was started by the first author (Bang, 2013) [1].

Abstract:A non-complete geometric distance-regular graph is the point graph of a partial linear space in which the set of lines is a set of Delsarte cliques. In this paper, we prove that for a fixed integer m >= 2, there are only finitely many non-geometric distance-regular graphs with smallest eigenvalue at least -m, diameter at least three and intersection number c(2) >= 2. Abstract:For a distance-regular graph of diameter three Γ, the statement that distance-3 graph Γ3 of Γ is strongly regular is equivalent to that Γ has eigenvalue −1. There are many distance-regular graphs of diameter 3 having eigenvalue −1, such as the folded 7-cube, generalized hexagons of order (s,s) and antipodal nonbipartite distance-regular graphs of diameter 3. In this paper, we show that for a fixed positive integer α (β, respectively), there are only finitely many distance-regular graphs of diameter 3 having eigenvalue −1 and a3=α (b1c2=β and a3≠0, respectively). Such distance-regular graphs for small numbers α=1,2 or β=3 with a3≠0 are classified. We show that there are no distance-regular graphs with intersection array {44,35,3;1,5,42}. Moreover, we classify the distance-regular graphs with diameter 3 and smallest eigenvalue greater than −3.

On Structural and Spectral Properties of Distance Magic Graphs

Abstract:A graph $G=(V,E)$ is said to be distance magic if there is a bijection $f$ from a vertex set of $G$ to the first $|V(G)|$ natural numbers such that for each vertex $v$, its weight given by $\sum_{u \in N(v)}f(u)$ is constant, where $N(v)$ is an open neighborhood of a vertex $v$. In this paper, we introduce the concept of $p$-distance magic labeling and establish the necessary and sufficient condition for a graph to be distance magic. Additionally, we introduce necessary and sufficient conditions for a connected regular graph to exhibit distance magic properties in terms of the eigenvalues of its adjacency and Laplacian matrices. Furthermore, we study the spectra of distance magic graphs, focusing on singular distance magic graphs. Also, we show that the number of distance magic labelings of a graph is, at most, the size of its automorphism group.

Abstract:J.H. Koolen and J. Park found a boundary for the maximum size of the coclique in the neighborhood of a vertex of a distance-regular graph. Using this boundary, we prove that distance-regular graphs with the intersection arrays 83, 54, 21; 1, 6, 63, 80, 54, 12; 1, 6, 60, and 93, 64, 24; 1, 12, 62 do not exist.
Tetravalent distance magic graphs of small order and an infinite family of examples

Abstract:A graph of order $n$ is distance magic if it admits a bijective labeling of its vertices with integers from $1$ to $n$ such that each vertex has the same sum of the labels of its neighbors. This paper contributes to the long term project of characterizing all tetravalent distance magic graphs. With the help of a computer we find that out of almost nine million connected tetravalent graphs up to order $16$ only nine are distance magic. In fact, besides the six well known wreath graphs there are only three other examples, one of each of the orders $12$, $14$ and $16$. We introduce a generalization of wreath graphs, the so-called quasi wreath graphs, and classify all distance magic graphs among them. This way we obtain infinitely many new tetravalent distance magic graphs. Moreover, the two non-wreath graphs of orders $12$ and $14$ are quasi wreath graphs while the one of order $16$ can be obtained from a quasi wreath graph of order $14$ using a simple construction due to Kovář, Fronček and Kovářová.

Abstract:Distance-regular graphs are a class of regualr graphs with pretty combinatorial symmetry. In 2007, Miklavič and Potočnik proposed the problem of charaterizing distance-regular Cayley graphs, which can be viewed as a natural extension of the problem of characterizing strongly-regular Cayley graphs (or equivalently, regular partial difference sets). In this paper, we provide a partial characterization for distance-regular Cayley graphs over semi-dihedral groups and pseudo-semi-dihedral groups, both of which are $2$-groups with a cyclic subgroup of index $2$.

Abstract:Given a finite group G acting freely on a compact metric space M , and , we define the G -Borsuk graph on M by drawing edges whenever there is a non-identity such that . We show that when is small, its chromatic number is determined by the topology of M via its G -covering number, which is the minimum k such that there is a closed cover with for all . We are interested in bounding this number. We give lower bounds using G -actions on Hom-complexes, and upper bounds using a recursive formula on the dimension of M . We conjecture that the true chromatic number coincides with the lower bound, and give computational evidence. We also study random G -Borsuk graphs, which are random induced subgraphs. For these, we compute thresholds for that guarantee that the chromatic number is still that of the whole G -Borsuk graph. Our results are tight (up to a constant) when the G -index and dimension of M coincide.

Abstract:We find an inequality involving the eigenvalues of a regular graph; equality holds if and only if the graph is strongly regular. We apply this inequality to the first subconstituents of a distance-regular graph and obtain a simple proof of the fundamental bound for distance-regular graphs, discovered by Jurisic, Koolen and Terwilliger. Using this we show that for distance-regular graphs with certain intersection arrays, the first subconstituent graphs are strongly regular. From these results we prove the nonexistence of distance-regular graphs associated to 20 feasible intersection arrays from the book Distance-Regular Graphs by Brouwer, Cohen and Neumaier [3]. Abstract:Distance-regular graphs are a key concept in Algebraic Combinatorics and have given rise to several generalizations, such as association schemes. Motivated by spectral and other algebraic characterizations of distance-regular graphs, we study `almost distance-regular graphs'. We use this name informally for graphs that share some regularity properties that are related to distance in the graph. For example, a known characterization of a distance-regular graph is the invariance of the number of walks of given length between vertices at a given distance, while a graph is called walk-regular if the number of closed walks of given length rooted at any given vertex is a constant. One of the concepts studied here is a generalization of both distance-regularity and walk-regularity called $m$-walk-regularity. Another studied concept is that of $m$-partial distance-regularity or, informally, distance-regularity up to distance $m$. Using eigenvalues of graphs and the predistance polynomials, we discuss and relate these and other concepts of almost distance-regularity, such as their common generalization of $(\ell,m)$-walk-regularity. We introduce the concepts of punctual distance-regularity and punctual walk-regularity as a fundament upon which almost distance-regular graphs are built. We provide examples that are mostly taken from the Foster census, a collection of symmetric cubic graphs. Two problems are posed that are related to the question of when almost distance-regular becomes whole distance-regular. We also give several characterizations of punctually distance-regular graphs that are generalizations of the spectral excess theorem.
