Abstract:We find that certain distance-regular graphs must contain Pappus subgraphs and, as a corollary, are able to rule out the existence of the last bipartite distance-regular graph of diameter 6 in the tables of [2] for which the existence was still undecided.

Abstract:We find an inequality involving the eigenvalues of a regular graph; equality holds if and only if the graph is strongly regular. We apply this inequality to the first subconstituents of a distance-regular graph and obtain a simple proof of the fundamental bound for distance-regular graphs, discovered by Jurisic, Koolen and Terwilliger. Using this we show that for distance-regular graphs with certain intersection arrays, the first subconstituent graphs are strongly regular. From these results we prove the nonexistence of distance-regular graphs associated to 20 feasible intersection arrays from the book Distance-Regular Graphs by Brouwer, Cohen and Neumaier [3]. Abstract:Terwilliger [15] has given the diameter bound d ≤ (s − 1)(k − 1) + 1 for distance-regular graphs with girth 2s and valency k. We show that the only distance-regular graphs with even girth which reach this bound are the hypercubes and the doubled Odd graphs. Also we improve this bound for bipartite distance-regular graphs. Weichsel [17] conjectures that the only distance-regular subgraphs of a hypercube are the even polygons, the hypercubes and the doubled Odd graphs and proves this in the case of girth 4. We show that the only distance-regular subgraphs of a hypercube with girth 6 are the doubled Odd graphs. If the girth is equal to 8, then its valency is at most 12.

Abstract:We construct distance-regular graphs with the same – classical – parameters as the Grassmann graphs on the e-dimensional subspaces of a (2e+1)-dimensional space over an arbitrary finite field. This provides the first known family of non-vertex-transitive distance-regular graphs with unbounded diameter.

Abstract:J.H. Koolen and J. Park found a boundary for the maximum size of the coclique in the neighborhood of a vertex of a distance-regular graph. Using this boundary, we prove that distance-regular graphs with the intersection arrays 83, 54, 21; 1, 6, 63, 80, 54, 12; 1, 6, 60, and 93, 64, 24; 1, 12, 62 do not exist.

Abstract:In their 1984 book "Algebraic Combinatorics I: Association Schemes'', Bannai and Ito conjectured that there are only finitely many distance-regular graphs with fixed valency at least three. In a series of papers they showed that their conjecture holds for the class of bipartite distance-regular graphs. In this paper we prove that the Bannai-Ito conjecture also holds for the more general class of regular near polygons, and for the class of geodetic distance-regular graphs.

Abstract:In [Distrance-regular Cayley graphs on dihedral groups, J. Combin. Theory Ser B 97 (2007) 14--33], Miklavi\v{c} and Poto\v{c}nik proposed the problem of characterizing distance-regular Cayley graphs, which can be viewed as an extension of the problem of identifying strongly regular Cayley graphs, or equivalently, regular partial difference sets. In this paper, all distance-regular Cayley graphs over $\mathbb{Z}_{p^s}\oplus\mathbb{Z}_{p}$ with $p$ being an odd prime are determined. It is shown that every such graph is isomorphic to a complete graph, a complete multipartite graph, or the line graph of a transversal design $TD(r,p)$ with $2\leq r\leq p-1$.

Abstract:Distance-regular graphs are a key concept in Algebraic Combinatorics and have given rise to several generalizations, such as association schemes. Motivated by spectral and other algebraic characterizations of distance-regular graphs, we study `almost distance-regular graphs'. We use this name informally for graphs that share some regularity properties that are related to distance in the graph. For example, a known characterization of a distance-regular graph is the invariance of the number of walks of given length between vertices at a given distance, while a graph is called walk-regular if the number of closed walks of given length rooted at any given vertex is a constant. One of the concepts studied here is a generalization of both distance-regularity and walk-regularity called $m$-walk-regularity. Another studied concept is that of $m$-partial distance-regularity or, informally, distance-regularity up to distance $m$. Using eigenvalues of graphs and the predistance polynomials, we discuss and relate these and other concepts of almost distance-regularity, such as their common generalization of $(\ell,m)$-walk-regularity. We introduce the concepts of punctual distance-regularity and punctual walk-regularity as a fundament upon which almost distance-regular graphs are built. We provide examples that are mostly taken from the Foster census, a collection of symmetric cubic graphs. Two problems are posed that are related to the question of when almost distance-regular becomes whole distance-regular. We also give several characterizations of punctually distance-regular graphs that are generalizations of the spectral excess theorem.

Abstract:We determine which Krein parameters of nonbipartite antipodal distance-regular graphs of diameter 3 and 4 can vanish, and give combinatorial interpretations of their vanishing. We also study tight distance-regular graphs of diameter 3 and 4. In the case of diameter 3, tight graphs are precisely the Taylor graphs. In the case of antipodal distance-regular graphs of diameter 4, tight graphs are precisely the graphs for which the Krein parameter q114 vanishes.

Abstract:Bannai and Ito conjectured in a 1987 paper that there are finitely many distance-regular graphs with fixed degree that is greater than two. In a series of papers they showed that their conjecture held for distance-regular graphs with degrees 3 or 4. In this paper we prove that the Bannai–Ito conjecture holds for degrees 5–7.

Abstract:Earlier it was proved that some distance-regular graphs of diameter 3 with c_2=2 do not exist. Distance-regular graph with intersection array {17,16,10;1,2,8} has strongly regular graph _3 (pseudo-geometric graph for the net pG_9(17,9) ). By symmetrizing the arrays of triple intersection numbers, it is proved that the distance-regular graphs with intersection arrays {17,16,10;1,2,8} and {22,21,4;1,2,14} do not exist.

Abstract:A graph $G$ with $d+1$ distinct eigenvalues is called strongly distance-regular if $G$ itself is distance-regular, and its distance-$d$ graph $G_d$ is strongly-regular. In this note we provide a spectral characterization of those distance-regular graphs with diameter $d=4$ which are strongly distance-regular. As a byproduct, it is shown that all bipartite strongly distance-regular graphs with such a diameter are antipodal.

Abstract:In this paper, we classify non-geometric distance-regular graphs of diameter at least $3$ with smallest eigenvalue at least $-3$. This is progress towards what is hoped to be an eventual complete classification of distance-regular graphs with smallest eigenvalue at least $-3$, analogous to existing classification results available in the case that the smallest eigenvalue is at least $-2$.

Abstract:The regular complete t-partite graphs Kt×s (s,t positive integers at least 2) with valency k=(t−1)s have smallest eigenvalue −s=−k/(t−1), and hence, for fixed t there are infinitely many of them. In this paper we will show that these graphs are exceptional graphs for the class of distance-regular graphs. For this we will show a valency bound for distance-regular graphs with a relatively large, in absolute value, smallest eigenvalue. Using this bound, we classify the non-bipartite distance-regular graphs with diameter at most three with smallest eigenvalue not larger than −k/2, where k is the valency of the graph. As an application we complete the classification of the 3-chromatic distance-regular graphs with diameter three, which was started by Blokhuis, Brouwer and Haemers.

Abstract:The characterization of distance-regular Cayley graphs originated from the problem of identifying strongly regular Cayley graphs, or equivalently, regular partial difference sets. In this paper, a classification of distance-regular Cayley graphs on dicyclic groups is obtained. More specifically, it is shown that every distance-regular Cayley graph on a dicyclic group is a complete graph, a complete multipartite graph, or a non-antipodal bipartite distance-regular graph with diameter $3$ satisfying some additional conditions.
