Abstract:Let Z(n) be the cyclic group of order n. For a sequence S of elements in Z(n), we use f(S) to denote the number of subsequences of S that the sum of whose terms is zero. In this paper, we determine all sequences S of elements in Z(n) for which 5/16 < f(S)/\S\less than or equal to 1/2.

Abstract:Let G be any additive abelian group with cyclic torsion subgroup, and let A, B and C be finite subsets of G with cardinality n > 0. We show that there is a numbering {a(i)}(n)(i=1)of the elements of A, a numbering {b(i)}(n)(i=1) of the elements of B and a numbering {c(i)}(n)(i=1) of the elements of C, such that all the sums a(i) + b(i) + c(i) (1 <= i <= n) are (pairwise) distinct. Consequently, each subcube of the Latin cube formed by the Cayley addition table of Z/NZ contains a Latin transversal. This additive theorem is an essential result which can be further extended via restricted sumsets in a field.

Abstract:Shnirel'man's inequality and Shnirel'man's basis theorem are fundamental results about sums of sets of positive integers in additive number theory. It is proved that these results are inherently order-theoretic and extend to partially ordered abelian and nonabelian groups. One abelian application is an addition theorem for sums of sets of $n$-dimensional lattice points.

Abstract:In this paper we investigate some new problems in additive combinatorics.Our problems mainly involve permutations (or circular permutations) n distinct numbers (or elements of an additive abelian group) a1,…,an with adjacent sums ai + ai+1 (or differences ai-ai+1) pairwise distinct.For an odd prime power q =2n + 1 ＞ 13 with q ≠ 25,we show that there is a circular permutation (a1,…,an) of the elements of S={a2 : a∈(F)q\{0}} such that {a1+a2,…,an-1+an,an+a1} =S,where (F)q denotes the field of order q.For any finite subset A of an additive torsion-free abelian group G with |A| =n ＞ 3,we prove that there is a numbering a1,…,an of the elements of A such that a1 + 2a2,a2 + 2a3,…,an-1 + 2an,an + 2a1 are pairwise distinct.We also pose 30 open conjectures for further research.

Abstract:Let $G$ be an additive finite abelian group of order $n$, and let $S$ be a sequence of $n+k$ elements in $G$, where $k\geq 1$. Suppose that $S$ contains $t$ distinct elements. Let $\sum_n(S)$ denote the set that consists of all elements in $G$ which can be expressed as the sum over a subsequence of length $n$. In this paper we prove that, either $0\in \sum_n(S)$ or $|\sum_n(S)|\geq k+t-1.$ This confirms a conjecture by Y.O. Hamidoune in 2000.

Abstract:Let G be a finite additive abelian group with exponent exp(G) = n > 1 and let A be a nonempty subset of {1, . . . , n - 1}. In this paper, we investigate the smallest positive integer m, denoted by s(A)(G), such that any sequence {c(i)}(i=1)(m) with terms from G has a length n = exp(G) subsequence {c(ij)}(j=1)(n) for which there are a(1), . . . , a(n) is an element of A such that Sigma(n)(j=1) a(i)c(ij) = 0.When G is a p-group, A contains no multiples of p and any two distinct elements of A are incongruent mod p, we show that s(A)(G) <= inverted right perpendicularD(G)/vertical bar A vertical bar inverted left perpendicular + exp(G) - 1 if vertical bar A vertical bar is at least (D(G) - 1)/(exp(G) - 1), where D(G) is the Davenport constant of G and this upper bound for s(A)(G) in terms of vertical bar A vertical bar is essentially best possible. Abstract:For n = 1, 2, 3, ... let S-n be the sum of the first n primes. We mainly show that the sequence a(n) = (n)root S-n/n (n = 1, 2, 3, ... ) is strictly decreasing, and moreover the sequence a(n+1)/a(n) (n = 10, 11, ... ) is strictly increasing. We also formulate similar conjectures involving twin primes or partitions of integers.

Abstract:Let p be an odd prime. In this paper, analogs of Wilson?s and Wolstenholme?s theorems on the solution sets S+ = {n ? Z* p | n ? a + b ? ab (mod p)} and S? = {n ? Z* p | n ? a ? b ? ab (mod p)} are given, where Z* p denote a reduced residue system modulo p. We also establish congruences about sum and product of the quadratic residues in S+ or in S? modulo p. Finally, we raise a problem on how to solve Hadamard?s conjecture in the last section.

Abstract:Let A = {a(s) + n(s)Z}(k)(s=1) (n(1) less than or equal to ...less than or equal to n(k)) be a system of arithmetic sequences where a(1),..., a(k), is an element of Z and n(1),..., n(k), is an element of Z(+). For m is an element of Z(+) system A will be called an (exact) m-cover of Z if every integer is covered by A at least (exactly) m times. In this paper we reveal further connections between the common differences in an (exact) m-cover of Z and Egyptian fractions. Here are some typical results for those m-covers A of Z: (a) For any m(1),..., m(k) is an element of Z(+) there are at least m positive integers in the form Sigma(s is an element of I)m(s)/(n), where I subset of or equal to {1,..., k}. Abstract:Let $G$ be a finite abeilian group. A sequence $S$ with terms from $G$ is zero-sum if the sum of terms in $S$ equals zero. It is a minimal zero-sum sequence if no proper, nontrivial subsequence is zero-sum. The maximal length of a minimal zero-sum subsequence in $G$ is the Davenport constant, denoted $D(G)$. For a rank 2 group $G=C_n \oplus C_n$, it is known that $D(G)=2n-1$. However, the structure of all maximal length minimal zero-sum sequences remains open. If every such sequence contains a term with multiplicity $n-1$, then $C_n \oplus C_n$ is said to have Property B, and it is conjectured that this is true for all rank 2 groups $C_n \oplus C_n$. In this paper, we show that Property B is multiplicative, namely, if $G=C_n \oplus C_n$ and $G=C_m \oplus C_m$ both satisfy Property B, with $m, n\geq 3$ odd and $mn>9$, then $C_{mn}\oplus C_{mn}$ satisfies Property B also. Combined with previous work in the literature, this reduces the question of establishing Property B to the prime cases, and in such case the complete structural description of the sequence follows.

Abstract:We show connections between a special type of addition formulas and a theorem of Stieltjes and Rogers. We use different techniques to derive the desirable addition formulas. We apply our approach to derive special addition theorems for Bessel functions and confluent hypergeometric functions. We also derive several additions theorems for basic hypergeometric functions. Applications to the evaluation of Hankel determinants are also given .

Abstract:Let G be an additive abelian group. The zero-sum problem for G asks for the least positive integer k such that for any a1, · · · , ak ∈ G there is an I ⊆ {1, · · · , k} of required cardinality satisfying ∑ i∈I ai = 0. In this talk we will introduce the famous theorem of P. Erdős, A. Ginzburg and A. Ziv (for G = Zn), and recent results of L. Rónya on the Kemnitz conjecture concerning the group Zn ⊕Zn, where Zn = Z/nZ is the additive cyclic group of residue classes modulo n. 1. The Erdős-Ginzburg-Ziv Theorem In 1961 P. Erdős, A. Ginzburg and A. Ziv [Bull. Research Council Israel, 10(1961)] established the following celebrated theorem. EGZ Theorem. Let n be any positive integer, and S = {ai} i=1 be a sequence of integers. Then there is an I ⊆ {1, · · · , 2n − 1} with |I| = n such that ∑ i∈I ai ≡ 0 (mod n). This can be viewed as the first nontrivial result on zero-sum problems. Let G be a finite additive abelian group. Abstract:We confirm Sun's conjecture that ((n+1)root Fn+1/(n)root F-n)(n >= 4) is strictly decreasing to the limit 1, where (Fn) n 0 is the Fibonacci sequence. We also prove that the sequence (n+ 1v Dn+ 1/ nv Dn) n 3 is strictly decreasing with limit 1, where Dn is the n- th derangement number. For m- th order harmonic numbers H (m) n = n k= 1 1/ k m (n = 1, 2, 3,...), we show that n+ 1 H (m) n+ 1 / n H (m) n n 3 is strictly increasing.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a finite additive abelian group with exponent $n>1$, and let $a_1,\ldots,a_{n-1}\in G$. We show that there is a permutation $\sigma\in S_{n-1}$ such that all the elements $sa_{\sigma(s)}\ (s=1,\ldots,n-1)$ are nonzero if and only if $$\left|\left\{1\le s<n:\ \frac{n}{d}a_s\ne 0\right\}\right|\ge d-1\ \ \textrm{ for every positive divisor }\ d\ \textrm{ of }\ n.$$ When $G$ is the cyclic group $\mathbb Z/n\mathbb Z$, this confirms a conjecture of Z.-W. Sun.

Abstract:Let G be an additive abelian group of order n, and S= { ai }i2n= 1 a sequence of 2n - 1elements in G. For a ∈ G let r ( S, a ) denote the number of ways we can write a as a sum of n terms of S. If G is a subgroup of the additive group of F, where F is a field of prime characteristic p , then we have r(S,0)≡1 (mod p), and r(S,a)≡0 (mod p) for a∈ G \ {0}. This extends Gao's work[21 on a theorem of Erdos, Ginzburg and Ziv.
