Abstract:We study a new graph separation problem called Multiway Near-Separator. Given an undirected graph $G$, integer $k$, and terminal set $T \subseteq V(G)$, it asks whether there is a vertex set $S \subseteq V(G) \setminus T$ of size at most $k$ such that in graph $G-S$, no pair of distinct terminals can be connected by two pairwise internally vertex-disjoint paths. Hence each terminal pair can be separated in $G-S$ by removing at most one vertex. The problem is therefore a generalization of (Node) Multiway Cut, which asks for a vertex set for which each terminal is in a different component of $G-S$. We develop a fixed-parameter tractable algorithm for Multiway Near-Separator running in time $2^{O(k \log k)} * n^{O(1)}$. Our algorithm is based on a new pushing lemma for solutions with respect to important separators, along with two problem-specific ingredients. The first is a polynomial-time subroutine to reduce the number of terminals in the instance to a polynomial in the solution size $k$ plus the size of a given suboptimal solution. The second is a polynomial-time algorithm that, given a graph $G$ and terminal set $T \subseteq V(G)$ along with a single vertex $x \in V(G)$ that forms a multiway near-separator, computes a 14-approximation for the problem of finding a multiway near-separator not containing $x$.

Shortest Path Separators in Unit Disk Graphs

Abstract:We introduce a new balanced separator theorem for unit-disk graphs involving two shortest paths combined with the 1-hop neighbours of those paths and two other vertices. This answers an open problem of Yan, Xiang and Dragan [CGTA '12] and improves their result that requires removing the 3-hop neighborhood of two shortest paths. Our proof uses very different ideas, including Delaunay triangulations and a generalization of the celebrated balanced separator theorem of Lipton and Tarjan [J. Appl. Math. '79] to systems of non-intersecting paths.

Separator Theorem and Algorithms for Planar Hyperbolic Graphs

Abstract:The hyperbolicity of a graph, informally, measures how close a graph is (metrically) to a tree. Hence, it is intuitively similar to treewidth, but the measures are formally incomparable. Motivated by the broad study of algorithms and separators on planar graphs and their relation to treewidth, we initiate the study of planar graphs of bounded hyperbolicity. Our main technical contribution is a novel balanced separator theorem for planar $\delta$-hyperbolic graphs that is substantially stronger than the classic planar separator theorem. For any fixed $\delta \geq 0$, we can find balanced separator that induces either a single geodesic (shortest) path or a single geodesic cycle in the graph. An important advantage of our separator is that the union of our separator (vertex set $Z$) with any subset of the connected components of $G - Z$ induces again a planar $\delta$-hyperbolic graph, which would not be guaranteed with an arbitrary separator. Our construction runs in near-linear time and guarantees that size of separator is $\mathrm{poly}(\delta) \cdot \log n$. As an application of our separator theorem and its strong properties, we obtain two novel approximation schemes on planar $\delta$-hyperbolic graphs. We prove that Maximum Independent Set and the Traveling Salesperson problem have a near-linear time FPTAS for any constant $\delta$, running in $n\, \mathrm{polylog}(n) \cdot 2^{\mathcal{O}(\delta^2)} \cdot \varepsilon^{-\mathcal{O}(\delta)}$ time. We also show that our approximation scheme for Maximum Independent Set has essentially the best possible running time under the Exponential Time Hypothesis (ETH). This immediately follows from our third contribution: we prove that Maximum Independent Set has no $n^{o(\delta)}$-time algorithm on planar $\delta$-hyperbolic graphs, unless ETH fails.

Abstract:Partitioning the vertices of a graph into two roughly equal parts while minimizing the number of edges crossingthe cut is a fundamental problem (called balanced separator) that arises in many settings. For this problem, andvariants such as the uniform sparsest cut problem where the goal is to minimize the fraction of pairs on oppositesides of the cut that are connected by an edge, there are large gaps between the known approximation algorithms andnonapproximability results. While no constant factor approximation algorithms are known, even APX-hardness is notknown either.In this work we prove that for balanced separator and uniform sparsest cut, semidefinite programs from the Lasserrehierarchy (which are the most powerful relaxations studied in the literature) have an integrality gap bounded awayfrom 1, even for $\Omega(n)$ levels of the hierarchy. This complements recent algorithmic results in Guruswamiand Sinop[ Proceedings of the 52nd Annual Symposium on Foundations of Computer Science (FOCS) , 2011, pp. 482--491]which used the Lasserre hierarchy to give an approximation scheme for these problems (with runtime depending onthe spectrum of the graph). Along the way, we make an observation that simplifies the task of lifting “polynomialconstraints” (such as the global balance constraint in balanced separator) to higher levels of the Lasserre hierarchy.
Induced-Minor-Free Graphs: Separator Theorem, Subexponential Algorithms, and Improved Hardness of Recognition

Abstract:A graph $G$ contains a graph $H$ as an induced minor if $H$ can be obtained from $G$ by vertex deletions and edge contractions. The class of $H$-induced-minor-free graphs generalizes the class of $H$-minor-free graphs, but unlike $H$-minor-free graphs, it can contain dense graphs. We show that if an $n$-vertex $m$-edge graph $G$ does not contain a graph $H$ as an induced minor, then it has a balanced vertex separator of size $O_{H}(\sqrt{m})$, where the $O_{H}(\cdot)$-notation hides factors depending on $H$. More precisely, our upper bound for the size of the balanced separator is $O(\min(|V(H)|^2, \log n) \cdot \sqrt{|V(H)|+|E(H)|} \cdot \sqrt{m})$. We give an algorithm for finding either an induced minor model of $H$ in $G$ or such a separator in randomized polynomial-time. We apply this to obtain subexponential $2^{O_{H}(n^{2/3} \log n)}$ time algorithms on $H$-induced-minor-free graphs for a large class of problems including maximum independent set, minimum feedback vertex set, 3-coloring, and planarization. For graphs $H$ where every edge is incident to a vertex of degree at most 2, our results imply a $2^{O_{H}(n^{2/3} \log n)}$ time algorithm for testing if $G$ contains $H$ as an induced minor. Our second main result is that there exists a fixed tree $T$, so that there is no $2^{o(n/\log^3 n)}$ time algorithm for testing if a given $n$-vertex graph contains $T$ as an induced minor unless the Exponential Time Hypothesis (ETH) fails. Our reduction also gives NP-hardness, which solves an open problem asked by Fellows, Kratochvíl, Middendorf, and Pfeiffer [Algorithmica, 1995], who asked if there exists a fixed planar graph $H$ so that testing for $H$ as an induced minor is NP-hard.

On the Size of Minimal Separators for Treedepth Decomposition

Abstract:Treedepth decomposition has several practical applications and can be used to speed up many parameterized algorithms. There are several works aiming to design a scalable algorithm to compute exact treedepth decompositions. Those include works based on a set of all minimal separators. In those algorithms, although a number of minimal separators are enumerated, the minimal separators that are used for an optimal solution are empirically very small. Therefore, analyzing the upper bound on the size of minimal separators is an important problem because it has the potential to significantly reduce the computation time. A minimal separator $S$ is called an optimal top separator if $td(G) = |S| + td(G \backslash S)$, where $td(G)$ denotes the treedepth of $G$. Then, we have two theoretical results on the size of optimal top separators. (1) For any $G$, there is an optimal top separator $S$ such that $|S| \le 2tw(G)$, where $tw(G)$ is the treewidth of $G$. (2) For any $c < 2$, there exists a graph $G$ such that any optimal top separator $S$ of $G$ have $|S| > c \cdot tw(G)$, i.e., the first result gives a tight bound on the size of an optimal top separator.

Abstract:Minimal separators in graphs are an important concept in algorithmic graph theory. In particular, many problems that are NP-hard for general graphs are known to become polynomial-time solvable for classes of graphs with a polynomially bounded number of minimal separators. Several well-known graph classes have this property, including chordal graphs, permutation graphs, circular-arc graphs, and circle graphs. We perform a systematic study of the question which classes of graphs defined by small forbidden induced subgraphs have a polynomially bounded number of minimal separators. We focus on sets of forbidden induced subgraphs with at most four vertices and obtain an almost complete dichotomy, leaving open only two cases.

Abstract:A minimal separator of a graph $G$ is a set $S \subseteq V(G)$ such that there exist vertices $a,b \in V(G) \setminus S$ with the property that $S$ separates $a$ from $b$ in $G$, but no proper subset of $S$ does. For an integer $k\ge 0$, we say that a minimal separator is $k$-simplicial if it can be covered by $k$ cliques and denote by $\mathcal{G}_k$ the class of all graphs in which each minimal separator is $k$-simplicial. We show that for each $k \geq 0$, the class $\mathcal{G}_k$ is closed under induced minors, and we use this to show that the Maximum Weight Stable Set problem can be solved in polynomial time for $\mathcal{G}_k$. We also give a complete list of minimal forbidden induced minors for $\mathcal{G}_2$. Next, we show that, for $k \geq 1$, every nonnull graph in $\mathcal{G}_k$ has a $k$-simplicial vertex, i.e., a vertex whose neighborhood is a union of $k$ cliques; we deduce that the Maximum Weight Clique problem can be solved in polynomial time for graphs in $\mathcal{G}_2$. Further, we show that, for $k \geq 3$, it is NP-hard to recognize graphs in $\mathcal{G}_k$; the time complexity of recognizing graphs in $\mathcal{G}_2$ is unknown. We also show that the Maximum Clique problem is NP-hard for graphs in $\mathcal{G}_3$. Finally, we prove a decomposition theorem for diamond-free graphs in $\mathcal{G}_2$ (where the diamond is the graph obtained from $K_4$ by deleting one edge), and we use this theorem to obtain polynomial-time algorithms for the Vertex Coloring and recognition problems for diamond-free graphs in $\mathcal{G}_2$, and improved running times for the Maximum Weight Clique and Maximum Weight Stable Set problems for this class of graphs.

Finding Almost-Perfect Graph Bisections.

Abstract:We give a polynomial time algorithm that given a graph which admits a bisection cutting a fraction (1 − e) of edges, finds a bisection cutting a (1 − g(e)) fraction of edges where g(e) → 0 as e→ 0. One can take g(e) = O( 3 √ e log(1/e)). Previously known algorithms for Max Bisection could only guarantee finding a bisection that cuts a fraction of edges bounded away from 1 (in fact less than 3/4) in such graphs. The known Unique-Games hardness results for Max Cut imply that one cannot achieve g(e) 6 C √ e for some absolute constant C. Likewise, for the Min Bisection problem, if the graph has a bisection cutting at most e-fraction of the edges, our methods enable finding a bisection cutting at most O( 3 √ e log(1/e))-fraction of the edges. The algorithms can also find cuts that are nearly-balanced (say with imbalance of at most 0.01) with value at least 1 − O( √ e) (for Max Bisection) and at most O( √ e) (for Min Bisection). These guarantees are optimal up to constant factors in the O( √ e) term under the Unique Games and related conjectures. Our general approach is simple to describe: First, we show how to solve the problems if the graph is an expander or if the graph consists of many disjoint components, each of small measure. Then, we show that every graph can be decomposed into disjoint components that are either expanders or have small measure, and how the cuts on different pieces may be merged appropriately.

I address this question by introducing 'Local Separators' of graphs. Applications include: 1. Abstract:We introduce the Red-Blue Separation problem on graphs, where we are given a graph G=(V,E) whose vertices are colored either red or blue, and we want to select a (small) subset S⊆V , called red-blue separating set , such that for every red-blue pair of vertices, there is a vertex s∈S whose closed neighborhood contains exactly one of the two vertices of the pair. We study the computational complexity of Red-Blue Separation , in which one asks whether a given red-blue colored graph has a red-blue separating set of size at most a given integer. We prove that the problem is NP-complete even for restricted graph classes. We also show that it is always approximable in polynomial time within a factor of 2ln⁡n , where n is the order of the input graph. In contrast, for triangle-free graphs and for graphs of bounded maximum degree, we show that Red-Blue Separation is solvable in polynomial time when the size of the smaller color class is bounded by a constant. However, on general graphs, we show that the problem is W[2] -hard even when parameterized by the solution size plus the size of the smaller color class. We also consider the problem Max Red-Blue Separation where the coloring of the graph is not part of the input. Here, given an input graph G , we want to determine the smallest integer k such that, for every possible red-blue coloring of G , there is a red-blue separating set of size at most k . We show that Max Red-Blue Separation is NP-hard, even for graphs of bounded maximum degree, but can be approximated in polynomial time within a factor of O(ln2⁡n) , where n is the order of the input graph. We derive tight bounds on the cardinality of an optimal solution of Max Red-Blue Separation , showing that it can range from logarithmic in the graph order, up to the order minus one. We also give bounds with respect to related parameters. For trees however, we prove an upper bound of two-thirds the order.

Abstract:We consider the problem of partitioning the node set of a graph into $k$ sets of given sizes in order to \emph{minimize the cut} obtained using (removing) the $k$-th set. If the resulting cut has value $0$, then we have obtained a vertex separator. This problem is closely related to the graph partitioning problem. In fact, the model we use is the same as that for the graph partitioning problem except for a different \emph{quadratic} objective function. We look at known and new bounds obtained from various relaxations for this NP-hard problem. This includes: the standard eigenvalue bound, projected eigenvalue bounds using both the adjacency matrix and the Laplacian, quadratic programming (QP) bounds based on recent successful QP bounds for the quadratic assignment problems, and semidefinite programming bounds. We include numerical tests for large and \emph{huge} problems that illustrate the efficiency of the bounds in terms of strength and time.

A polynomial-time $\text{OPT}^ε$-approximation algorithm for maximum independent set of connected subgraphs in a planar graph

Abstract:In the Maximum Independent Set of Objects problem, we are given an $n$-vertex planar graph $G$ and a family $\mathcal{D}$ of $N$ objects, where each object is a connected subgraph of $G$. The task is to find a subfamily $\mathcal{F} \subseteq \mathcal{D}$ of maximum cardinality that consists of pairwise disjoint objects. This problem is $\mathsf{NP}$-hard and is equivalent to the problem of finding the maximum number of pairwise disjoint polygons in a given family of polygons in the plane. As shown by Adamaszek et al. (J. ACM '19), the problem admits a \emph{quasi-polynomial time approximation scheme} (QPTAS): a $(1-\varepsilon)$-approximation algorithm whose running time is bounded by $2^{\mathrm{poly}(\log(N),1/\epsilon)} \cdot n^{\mathcal{O}(1)}$. Nevertheless, to the best of our knowledge, in the polynomial-time regime only the trivial $\mathcal{O}(N)$-approximation is known for the problem in full generality. In the restricted setting where the objects are pseudolines in the plane, Fox and Pach (SODA '11) gave an $N^{\varepsilon}$-approximation algorithm with running time $N^{2^{\tilde{\mathcal{O}}(1/\varepsilon)}}$, for any $\varepsilon>0$. In this work, we present an $\text{OPT}^{\varepsilon}$-approximation algorithm for the problem that runs in time $N^{\tilde{\mathcal{O}}(1/\varepsilon^2)} n^{\mathcal{O}(1)}$, for any $\varepsilon>0$, thus improving upon the result of Fox and Pach both in terms of generality and in terms of the running time. Our approach combines the methodology of Voronoi separators, introduced by Marx and Pilipczuk (TALG '22), with a new analysis of the approximation factor.

Abstract:We consider the problem of dynamically maintaining (approximate) all-pairs effective resistances in separable graphs, which are those that admit an $n^{c}$-separator theorem for some $c<1$. We give a fully dynamic algorithm that maintains $(1+\varepsilon)$-approximations of the all-pairs effective resistances of an $n$-vertex graph $G$ undergoing edge insertions and deletions with $\tilde{O}(\sqrt{n}/\varepsilon^2)$ worst-case update time and $\tilde{O}(\sqrt{n}/\varepsilon^2)$ worst-case query time, if $G$ is guaranteed to be $\sqrt{n}$-separable (i.e., it is taken from a class satisfying a $\sqrt{n}$-separator theorem) and its separator can be computed in $\tilde{O}(n)$ time. Our algorithm is built upon a dynamic algorithm for maintaining \emph{approximate Schur complement} that approximately preserves pairwise effective resistances among a set of terminals for separable graphs, which might be of independent interest. We complement our result by proving that for any two fixed vertices $s$ and $t$, no incremental or decremental algorithm can maintain the $s-t$ effective resistance for $\sqrt{n}$-separable graphs with worst-case update time $O(n^{1/2-\delta})$ and query time $O(n^{1-\delta})$ for any $\delta>0$, unless the Online Matrix Vector Multiplication (OMv) conjecture is false. We further show that for \emph{general} graphs, no incremental or decremental algorithm can maintain the $s-t$ effective resistance problem with worst-case update time $O(n^{1-\delta})$ and query-time $O(n^{2-\delta})$ for any $\delta >0$, unless the OMv conjecture is false.

Abstract:This write-up contains some minor results and notes related to our work [HQ15] (some of them already known in the literature). In particular, it shows the following: - We show that a graph with polynomial expansion have sublinear separators. - We show that hereditary sublinear separators imply that a graph have small divisions. - We show a natural condition on a set of segments, such that they have low density. This might be of independent interest in trying to define a realistic input model for a set of segments. Unlike the previous two results, this is new. For context and more details, see the main paper.

Abstract:We consider the Minimum Steiner Cut problem on undirected planar graphs with non-negative edge weights. This problem involves finding the minimum cut of the graph that separates a specified subset $X$ of vertices (terminals) into two parts. This problem is of theoretical interest because it generalizes two classical optimization problems, Minimum $s$-$t$ Cut and Minimum Cut, and of practical importance because of its application to computing a lower bound for Steiner (Subset) TSP. Our algorithm has running time $O(n\log{n}\log{k})$ where $k$ is the number of terminals.
