Abstract:Some key problems were addressed about the context-sensitive L-system in terms of the fundamental data structure.Associated with the syntax of L-system,new solutions based on binary tree were explored,including two new concepts: growth-state tree and growth-manner tree,based on which a context-sensitive Lsystem was re-implemented.Compared with the L-system based on the linear array,the new system captures the essence of logical structure in L-systems,and simplifies the context search process,so as to obtain better timing and spacing performance in the simulation,as well as better extendibility.Finally,the optimization of rendering process was investigated with applications in virtual plants,and some plant samples demonstrated the effectiveness of the new implementation.

Abstract:We present a new data structure for the representation of an integrated circuit layout. It is a modified HV/VH tree using arrays as the primary container in bisector lists and leaf nodes. By grouping and sorting objects within these arrays together with a customized binary search algorithm, our new data structure provides excellent performance in both memory usage and region query speed. Experimental results show that in comparison with the original HV/VH tree, which has been regarded as the best layout data structure to date, the new data structure uses much less memory and can become 30% faster on region query.

Abstract:An algorithm is described which produces the extraction of an object's contours in a binary image while storing only two raster lines at a time during processing. The major data structure used is a block adjacency graph which occupies much less space (typically one hundredth) than the original image. Because this algorithm has very low costs of memory space and processing time, it is a powerful tool for processing large-size engineering drawings. Applications of the method to the recognition of some loop-structure logical symbols are described

Abstract:Rooted trees abound in computing and it is often necessary to draw them for visualization and documentation purposes. In the classical convention for tree drawing, the tree is drawn in a "level" fashion, with nodes (represented by boxes) at depth k lying on a horizontal line at a distance of k units below the root. The parent - child relationships are represented by lines between the boxes. Several algorithms have been developed for constructing a compact layout of a tree in the classical convention.In this paper we investigate algorithms for drawing trees according to two new conventions. In the inclusion convention, nodes are represented by boxes, and the parent - child relationship is represented by inclusion of one box in another. The tip-over convention again represents nodes as boxes, and, like the classical convention, represents the parent - child relationship by lines between the boxes; however, we allow siblings to be arranged vertically rather than horizontally.For many of the cases which arise in visualization of trees (for example, binary trees with textual information at the leaves) we present polynomial time algorithms. However, the general problem of finding minimum size layouts for either of the new conventions is shown to be NP-hard.

Abstract:Compact and I/O-efficient data representations play an important role in efficient algorithm design, as memory bandwidth and latency can present a significant performance bottleneck, slowing the computation by orders of magnitude. While this problem is very well explored in e.g. uniform numerical data processing, structural data applications (e.g. on huge graphs) require different algorithm-dependent approaches. Separable graph classes (i.e. graph classes with balanced separators of size $\mathcal{O}(n^c)$ with $c < 1$) include planar graphs, bounded genus graphs, and minor-free graphs. In this article we present two generalizations of the separator theorem, to partitions with small regions only on average and to weighted graphs. Then we propose I/O-efficient succinct representation and memory layout for random walks in(weighted) separable graphs in the pointer machine model, including an efficient algorithm to compute them. Finally, we present a worst-case I/O-optimal tree layout algorithm for root-leaf path traversal, show an additive (+1)-approximation of optimal compact layout and contrast this with NP-completeness proof of finding an optimal compact layout.

Abstract:A decision tree looks like a simple computational graph without cycles, where only the leaf nodes specify the output values and the non-terminals specify their tests or split conditions. From the numerical perspective, we express decision trees in the language of computational graph. We explicitly parameterize the test phase, traversal phase and prediction phase of decision trees based on the bitvectors of non-terminal nodes. As shown later, the decision tree is a shallow binary network in some sense. Especially, we introduce the bitvector matrix to implement the tree traversal in numerical approach, where the core is to convert the logical `AND' operation to arithmetic operations. And we apply this numerical representation to extend and unify diverse decision trees in concept.

Set Enumeration Tree based Image Representation for Gray Level Image Storage and Retrieval

Abstract:The recent growth of communications and multimedia applications had led to the requirement of mass storage space as well as efficient retrieval technique especially for multimedia data. In this paper, a novel approach for representing gray level image for data storage and image retrieval is proposed. The proposed approach used set enumeration tree data structures where only unique image pattern is stored in the image data structure. The overall structure involves two types of tree data structures; the first tree is low-level image pattern tree to store the unique gray level image pattern and the second tree is used to store the image path by referring to the first tree data structure. The low-level image pattern tree is predefined and will not expand throughout the image encoding process. The size of the second tree is gradually expanded as the result of addition of new image path during image encoding. Through unique image pattern encoding into a tree, there will be no redundant image features, thus leading to saving storing space. Caltech-101 gray level image datasets were used to test the proposed approach and the results showed that it could lead to saving storage space while provide promising performance in image retrieval.

Abstract:The Block Tree (BT) is a novel compact data structure designed to compress sequence collections. It obtains compression ratios close to Lempel-Ziv and supports efficient direct access to any substring. The BT divides the text recursively into fixed-size blocks and those appearing earlier are represented with pointers. On repetitive collections, a few blocks can represent all the others, and thus the BT reduces the size by orders of magnitude. In this paper we extend the BT to two dimensions, to exploit repetitiveness in collections of images, graphs, and maps. This two-dimensional Block Tree divides the image regularly into subimages and replaces some of them by pointers to other occurrences thereof. We develop a specific variant aimed at compressing the adjacency matrices of Web graphs, obtaining space reductions of up to 50\% compared with the $k^2$-tree, which is the best alternative supporting direct and reverse navigation in the graph.

Abstract:Bitmap is an efficient data compression technology for linear storage structures.It has been used in various cases to improve the performance of network processing.This paper proves the effectiveness of bitmap technology in storage requirement reduction for data structures of existing algorithms.A mathematical model is provided to illustrate the benefits of the bitmap technology,and experiment results also demonstrates the compression ability of bitmap technology.This paper also analyzes the advantages and disadvantages of using the bitmap technology,to indicate that bitmap,as an efficient technology for improving storage performance,provides an implicational guideline for future algorithms designing.

Abstract:In order to overcome the incontinuity and redundancy of data storage caused by the grids in representing the multi-resolution terrain, an adaptive hierarchical triangulation based on binary tree is used to represent the multi-resolution terrain model. It realizes the representation of the terrain data at different levels of detail and enables data compression by local omission of data values. The structure of binary tree is stored using a bit code of the underlying binary tree, while the height data are stored using an array, and relative pointers which allow a selective tree traversal. This method realizes the continuity and reduces the data volume in data storage of multi-resolution digital elevation model (DEM), and it is possible to work directly on the compressed data. We show that significant compression rates can be obtained already for small threshold values, and in a visualization application, it is possible to extracted and drawn triangulations at interactive rates.

Abstract:Graph is widely used to model data in various applications. With the rapid growth of many emerging applications such as Internet of Things, it is urgent to require the processing capability on large scale graphs with billions of vertices. Web graph is a typical case of graph data that is widely used for analyzing the structure, behavior and evolution of the World Wide Web. In this paper, we focus on optimal representation of large-scale Web graphs. Our work is motivated by the need of fit large-scale graphs into the main memory and carry out analyze on them. By analyzing the adjacency matrix of Web graphs, we find two characteristics on the distribution of 1s in the matrix. Firstly, only a very small proportion of elements in the matrix are 1s. Secondly, majority of 1s gather around the principal diagonal and form a few number of clusters in the matrix. Based on these characteristics, we first develop a clustering mechanism to locate the clusters of 1s in the adjacency matrix. Then, we combine this clustering mechanism with a structure named K2-tree and propose an approach for representing large-scale Web graphs compactly. Basic idea of the approach is trying to compress a large number of zeros as a single zero. Experimental results show that, our approach not only reduces the space for representing a Web graph, but also reduces the time consumption for operations such as retrieving neighbors of any nodes on the graph; compared with existing approaches, our approach achieves the best space/time tradeoff.

Abstract:In raster graphics, a line is displayed as a sequence of connected pixels that best approximate the line with minimum deviation. The displacement code of a line is a sequence of binary codes, each of which represents the displacement of a pixel on the line to its immediate predecessor pixel on the line. In fact, the displacement code records the entire process of drawing a line with successive pixels and it is deterministic for each specific line. In this paper, we study the important properties of the binary representation of displacement code, called BRDC, including calculation formula, periodicity, complement, decomposition etc. At last, we put forward an efficient adaptive multi-pixel line drawing algorithm based on exploited properties of BRDC, which demonstrates that BRDC is significant for designing efficient line drawing algorithms.

Abstract:A general methodology for performance modeling and optimization of hierarchical B pictures used in video coding is proposed in this study. First, an approach of directed tree decomposition is used to denote hierarchical B pictures. In combination with a proposed linear model for compression efficiency, the performance of any hierarchical B prediction structure can be evaluated conveniently from the directed tree. Then with a dynamic programming method, the optimal tree for any group length of hierarchical B pictures can be set up elegantly from recursive subtrees. This method can be adapted to tradeoff between compression efficiency and random access ability. Besides, experimental results show that the optimal tree of compression efficiency achieves higher performance than the existing hierarchical B prediction structures. © 2010 Asian Network for Scientific Information.

Abstract:Remote sensing data is usually stored by the raster form,the structure of objects is implied in it. From the view of object recognition of image,the purpose of this paper is to demonstrate how a tree structure may be used to represent the digital image. It focus on the structure feature of the object,which is different from quad tree.By the tree structure,the pixels can be organized to unites.In the end, the storage method of remote sensing data based on the tree structure and the method of changing an image to the tree structure were presented by an example of recognition of a high-resolution airport runway scene.

Abstract:Current image processing methods usually operate on the finest-granularity unit; that is, the pixel, which leads to challenges in terms of efficiency, robustness, and understandability in deep learning models. We present an improved granular-ball computing method to represent the image as a graph, in which each node expresses a structural block in the image and each edge represents the association between two nodes. Specifically:(1) We design a gradient-based strategy for the adaptive reorganization of all pixels in the image into numerous rectangular regions, each of which can be regarded as one node. (2) Each node has a connection edge with the nodes with which it shares regions. (3) We design a low-dimensional vector as the attribute of each node. All nodes and their corresponding edges form a graphical representation of a digital image. In the experiments, our proposed graph representation is applied to benchmark datasets for image classification tasks, and the efficiency and good understandability demonstrate that our proposed method offers significant potential in artificial intelligence theory and application.

Abstract:We will show how to implement binary decision tree traversal in the language of matrix computation. Our main contribution is to propose some equivalent algorithms of binary tree traversal based on a novel matrix representation of the hierarchical structure of the decision tree. Our key idea is to travel the binary decision tree by maximum inner product search. We not only implement decision tree methods without the recursive traverse but also delve into the partitioning nature of tree-based methods.

Abstract:Best match graphs (BMG) are a key intermediate in graph-based orthology detection and contain a large amount of information on the gene tree. We provide a near-cubic algorithm to determine whether a BMG is binary-explainable, i.e., whether it can be explained by a fully resolved gene tree and, if so, to construct such a tree. Moreover, we show that all such binary trees are refinements of the unique binary-resolvable tree (BRT), which in general is a substantial refinement of the also unique least resolved tree of a BMG. Finally, we show that the problem of editing an arbitrary vertex-colored graph to a binary-explainable BMG is NP-complete and provide an integer linear program formulation for this task.
