Abstract:In classical linguistic modelling for imprecise concepts and uncertain reasoning, a basic idea is to use fuzzy sets to describe the semantics of imprecise concepts, the theoretic foundation of this modelling is fuzzy logic. But in some practical applications, the determination of membership functions associated with vague concepts is difficult or impossible. In this paper, we present a new linguistic modelling technique based on the semantic similarity relation among linguistic labels. In this new linguistic model, a fuzzy relation is utilized to represent the semantic relation among linguistic labels. The elements in the fuzzy relation are interpreted as the degrees of similarities or the degrees of semantic overlapping between the corresponding linguistic labels. We develop an inference method for computing the degree of similarity between any two linguistic expressions which are the logic formulas generated by applying the logic connectives to the linguistic labels. This inference method utilizes the consonant mass assignment functions induced from the fuzzy similarity relation on linguistic labels. We show that the linguistic model presented in this paper satisfies some perfect properties, e.g. the excluded middle law, law of non-contradiction. This new linguistic modelling is illustrated finally in a linguistic decision-making example.

They also cover algebraic perspectives on modal logic, and the interplay of model-theoretic and algebraic techniques. Finally, they include some modern themes such as Lindstrom theorems, new perspectives on interpolation, modal fixed-point logics and infinitary modal logics. Note: These notes were written by Yafeng Wang (Department of Philosophy, Stanford University) as a record of three afternoon sessions on classical mathematical modal logic given by Johan van Benthem at the Berkeley-Stanford Logic Circle, San Francisco, May 2015.

Abstract:From the interpretation of Linear Logic multiplicative disjunction as the $\varepsilon$-product defined by Laurent Schwartz, we construct several models of Differential Linear Logic based on usual mathematical notions of smooth maps. This improves on previous results, by R. Blute, T. Ehrhard and C. Tasson, based on convenient smoothness where only intuitionist models were built. We isolate a completeness condition, called k-quasi-completeness, and an associated notion stable by duality called k-reflexivity, allowing for a $*$-autonomous category of k-reflexive spaces in which the dual of the tensor product is the reflexive version of the $\varepsilon$ product. We adapt Meise's definition of Smooth maps into a first model of Differential Linear Logic, made of k-reflexive spaces. We also build two new models of Linear Logic with conveniently smooth maps, on categories made respectively of Mackey-complete Schwartz spaces and Mackey-complete Nuclear Spaces (with extra reflexivity conditions). Varying slightly the notion of smoothness, one also recovers models of DiLL on the same $*$-autonomous categories. Throughout the article, we work within the setting of Dialogue categories where the tensor product is exactly the $\varepsilon$-product (without reflexivization).

Abstract:In various argumentation systems, under most of situations, only the status of some arguments of the systems should be evaluated, while that of others is not necessary to be figured out. Based on this observation, we first introduce an efficient method to evaluate the status of a part of arguments in an abstract argumentation framework (AF). Given an AF and a subset of arguments within it, the minimal set of arguments that are relevant to this subset (called the set of relevant arguments of the subset) is identified. Under a semantics satisfying the directionality criterion, the set of extensions of the sub-framework induced by the set of relevant arguments of the given subset (called a partial semantics of the AF with respect to this subset) can be evaluated locally. Then, we introduce three basic properties of the partial semantics of argumentation: monotonicity, extensibility and combinability, which lay a foundation for developing efficient algorithms for the status evaluation of a part of arguments in an AF. Finally, we conduct an empirical investigation on the properties of computing the partial semantics of argumentation using answer-set programming. The average results show that the computational benefits of this method is closely related to the edge density of the defeat graph of a given AF.

Abstract:In this paper, we apply a class of fuzzy modifiers based on fuzzy relations in description logics (DLs) to represent complex imprecise and incomplete knowledge. We investigate how to introduce the fuzzy modifiers into a fuzzy description logic ALC. The fuzzy description logic ALC with the fuzzy modifiers, called FALCM in the paper, has a more expressive capacity to represent imprecise and incomplete knowledge. At last, we give the reasoning algorithms for the satisfiability of FALCM concepts.
On Sub-Propositional Fragments of Modal Logic

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the well-known modal logics $\mathbf{K}$, $\mathbf{T}$, $\mathbf{K4}$, and $\mathbf{S4}$, and we study some of their sub-propositional fragments, namely the classical Horn fragment, the Krom fragment, the so-called core fragment, defined as the intersection of the Horn and the Krom fragments, plus their sub-fragments obtained by limiting the use of boxes and diamonds in clauses. We focus, first, on the relative expressive power of such languages: we introduce a suitable measure of expressive power, and we obtain a complex hierarchy that encompasses all fragments of the considered logics. Then, after observing the low expressive power, in particular, of the Horn fragments without diamonds, we study the computational complexity of their satisfiability problem, proving that, in general, it becomes polynomial.

Abstract:We investigate the role of coalgebraic predicate logic, a logic for neighborhood frames first proposed by Chang, in the study of monotonic modal logics. We prove analogues of the Goldblatt-Thomason Theorem and Fine's Canonicity Theorem for classes of monotonic neighborhood frames closed under elementary equivalence in coalgebraic predicate logic. The elementary equivalence here can be relativized to the classes of monotonic, quasi-filter, augmented quasi-filter, filter, or augmented filter neighborhood frames, respectively. The original, Kripke-semantic versions of the theorems follow as a special case concerning the classes of augmented filter neighborhood frames.

A New Modal Framework for Epistemic Logic

Abstract:Recent years witnessed a growing interest in non-standard epistemic logics of knowing whether, knowing how, knowing what, knowing why and so on. The new epistemic modalities introduced in those logics all share, in their semantics, the general schema of $\exists x \Box \phi$, e.g., knowing how to achieve $\phi$ roughly means that there exists a way such that you know that it is a way to ensure that $\phi$. Moreover, the resulting logics are decidable. Inspired by those particular logics, in this work, we propose a very general and powerful framework based on quantifier-free predicate language extended by a new modality $\Box^x$, which packs exactly $\exists x \Box$ together. We show that the resulting language, though much more expressive, shares many good properties of the basic propositional modal logic over arbitrary models, such as finite-tree-model property and van Benthem-like characterization w.r.t.\ first-order modal logic. We axiomatize the logic over S5 frames with intuitive axioms to capture the interaction between $\Box^x$ and know-that operator in an epistemic setting.
On the local consequence of modal Product logic: standard completeness and decidability

Abstract:Modal extensions of Product fuzzy logic can be considered both over Kripke models whose accessibility relation is valued, and over Kripke models with classical accessibility relation. We study the local consequence of the previous two modal Product logics. We prove that these logics are standard complete, in the sense that the logic defined over Kripke models evaluated over all product algebras coincides with that defined over Kripke models evaluated over the standard product algebra (with universe [0,1]). This holds both for the logic over classical Kripke frames, and for that over frames with a valued accessibility relation. Second, we prove that the previous logics are decidable.

Abstract:We investigate the topological interpretation of modal logic in modern terms, using a new notion of bisimulation. We look at modal logics with interesting topological content, presenting, among others, a new proof of McKinsey and Tarski's theorem on completeness of S4 with respect to the real line, and a completeness proof for the logic of finite unions of convex sets of reals. We conclude with a broader picture of extended modal languages of space, for which the main logical questions are still wide open.

Abstract:There has been renewed interest in recent years in McKinsey and Tarski's interpretation of modal logic in topological spaces and their proof that S4 is the logic of any separable dense-in-itself metric space. Here we extend this work to the modal mu-calculus and to a logic of tangled closure operators that was developed by Fernández-Duque after these two languages had been shown by Dawar and Otto to have the same expressive power over finite transitive Kripke models. We prove that this equivalence remains true over topological spaces. We establish the finite model property in Kripke semantics for various tangled closure logics with and without the universal modality $\forall$. We also extend the McKinsey--Tarski topological `dissection lemma'. These results are used to construct a representation map (also called a d-p-morphism) from any dense-in-itself metric space $X$ onto any finite connected locally connected serial transitive Kripke frame. This yields completeness theorems over $X$ for a number of languages: (i) the modal mu-calculus with the closure operator $\Diamond$; (ii) $\Diamond$ and the tangled closure operators $\langle t \rangle$; (iii) $\Diamond,\forall$; (iv) $\Diamond,\forall,\langle t \rangle$; (v) the derivative operator $\langle d \rangle$; (vi) $\langle d \rangle$ and the associated tangled closure operators $\langle dt \rangle$; (vii) $\langle d \rangle,\forall$; (viii) $\langle d \rangle,\forall,\langle dt \rangle$. Soundness also holds, if: (a) for languages with $\forall$, $X$ is connected; and (b) for languages with $\langle d \rangle$, $X$ validates the well known axiom $\mathrm{G}_1$. For countable languages without $\forall$, we prove strong completeness. We also show that in the presence of $\forall$, strong completeness fails if $X$ is compact and locally connected.

Abstract:We prove new Lindström theorems for the basic modal propositional language, and for some related fragments of first-order logic. We find difficulties with such results for modal languages without a finite-depth property, high-lighting the difference between abstract model theory for fragments and for extensions of first-order logic. In addition we discuss new connections with interpolation properties, and the modal invariance theorem.

Abstract:In a mathematical perspective, neighborhood models for modal logic are generalized quantifiers, parametrized to points in the domain of objects/worlds. We explore this analogy further, connecting generalized quantifier theory and modal neighborhood logic. In particular, we find interesting analogies between conservativity for linguistic quantifiers and the locality of modal logic, and between the role of invariances in both fields. Moreover, we present some new completeness results for modal neighborhood logics of linguistically motivated classes of generalized quantifiers, and raise new types of open problem. With the bridges established here, many further analogies might be explored between the two fields to mutual benefit.

Abstract:Modal dependence logics are modal logics defined on the basis of team semantics and have the downward closure property. In this paper, we introduce sound and complete deduction systems for the major modal dependence logics, especially those with intuitionistic connectives in their languages. We also establish a concrete connection between team semantics and single-world semantics, and show that modal dependence logics can be interpreted as variants of intuitionistic modal logics.

Abstract:We discuss four common mistakes in the teaching and textbooks of modal logic. The first one is missing the axiom $\Diamond\varphi\leftrightarrow\neg\Box\neg\varphi$, when choosing $\Diamond$ as the primitive modal operator, misunderstanding that $\Box$ and $\Diamond$ are symmetric. The second one is forgetting to make the set of formulas for filtration closed under subformulas, when proving the finite model property through filtration, neglecting that $\Box\varphi$ and $\Diamond\varphi$ may be abbreviations of formulas. The third one is giving wrong definitions of canonical relations in minimal canonical models that are unmatched with the primitive modal operators. The final one is misunderstanding the rule of necessitation, without knowing its distinction from the rule of modus ponens. To better understand the rule of necessitation, we summarize six ways of defining deductive consequence in modal logic: omitted definition, classical definition, ternary definition, reduced definition, bounded definition, and deflationary definition, and show that the last three definitions are equivalent to each other.

Abstract:We formulate and prove logical characterizations of crisp simulations and crisp directed simulations between fuzzy labeled transition systems with respect to fuzzy modal logics that use a general t-norm-based semantics. The considered logics are fragments of the fuzzy propositional dynamic logic with the Baaz projection operator. The logical characterizations concern preservation of positive existential (respectively, positive) modal formulas under crisp simulations (respectively, crisp directed simulations), as well as the Hennessy-Milner property of such simulations.
