Abstract:Superalloys (Ni-based) fabricated using laser melting deposition have long suffered from micro-cracks, pores, and unfused defects, which seriously limit their quality and applications. In this work, a novel solution of applying synchronously followed thermal environment (SFTE) is proposed to reduce or eliminate micro-cracks and thus improve mechanical properties of the FGH4096 superalloy. The finite element analysis results show that SFTE not only facilitates the temperature inside the samples increase, but also significantly slows down the temperature gradient. However, the change is not linear, and it shows a downward trend from 20 to 200 °C and 400-800 °C. The experimental results show that an appropriate SFTE temperature is demonstrated to reduce or eliminate micro-cracks and unfused defects. However, further increasing SFTE temperature results in the formation of a large number of long horizontal lath-like cracks. The mechanical properties show a trend of first increasing and then decreasing with the increase in SFTE temperature, which validates the results of finite element analysis and microstructure observations. Among them, the tensile and yield strengths, as well as elongation of the FGH4096 sample with SFTE temperature of 200 °C are maximum, which increases 7.08, 8.81, and 44.4% compared to the as-fabricated sample, respectively.
