Abstract:In 2023, mainland China had approximately 296 million older adults aged 60 and above, accounting for 21.1% of the total population. Of these, about 216 million were aged 65 and above, making up 15.4% of the population. The year 2021 was a critical period for China as the country navigated the COVID-19 pandemic, during which its aging population first exceeded 14%. This demographic milestone is often considered a significant trigger for the introduction of major social policies aimed at supporting older adults. For example, in 2019, China launched a national health plan to address dementia, spearheaded by the National Health Commission. In 2020, the long-term care insurance policy expanded from 35 pilot cities to 49 cities, further extending care coverage for the frail older population. By around 2035, the population aged 60 and above in China is expected to exceed 400 million, representing over 30% of the total population. This demographic shift presents substantial challenges for social policymaking and underscores the need for a professional workforce of gerontological social workers to engage in evidence-based practices in China.
