Abstract:The existing approach of preparing hydrogen through electrocatalytic water splitting is hindered by several factors, including the scarcity of efficient electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction that can function well under a variety of pH settings. The development of compounds with diverse active ingredients could contribute to the heterostructured electrocatalysts' ability to effectively react with a range of reactants. Moreover, assembling active species on a substrate to produce self-supported electrocatalysts can reduce the need for electricity. Here, we utilized nickel foam as the conductive substrate to produce heterostructured electrocatalysts with active species of ZnIn2S4, Ni2P, and NiS (denoted as ZnIn2S4/Ni2P/NiS@NF). The ZnIn2S4/Ni2P/NiS@NF only needs tiny overpotentials to drive high current densities and can be operated with long-term operational durability across a broad pH range.

Abstract:Electrochemical water splitting is a promising technology for sustainable conversion, storage, and transport of hydrogen energy. Searching for earth-abundant hydrogen/oxygen evolution reaction (HER/OER) electrocatalysts with high activity and durability to replace noble-metal-based catalysts plays paramount importance in the scalable application of water electrolysis. A freestanding electrode architecture is highly attractive as compared to the conventional coated powdery form because of enhanced kinetics and stability. Herein, recent progress in developing transition-metal-based HER/OER electrocatalytic materials is reviewed with selected examples of chalcogenides, phosphides, carbides, nitrides, alloys, phosphates, oxides, hydroxides, and oxyhydroxides. Focusing on self-supported electrodes, the latest advances in their structural design, controllable synthesis, mechanistic understanding, and strategies for performance enhancement are presented. Remaining challenges and future perspectives for the further development of self-supported electrocatalysts are also discussed.

Abstract:Developing highly efficient and durable alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) electrocatalysts composed of earth-abundant materials is crucial for large-scale electrochemical hydrogen production. Herein, interfacial chemistry engineering is employed to decouple the restriction of both water discharge and hydrogen adsorption free energy. And low valence state Niδ+ (δ < 1) is proposed as an efficient water-dissociation promoter based on our dual-descriptor method. Moreover, metallic and intrinsic HER-active Ni is introduced and a highly conductive edge-enriched Ni0.2Mo0.8N/Ni hybrid electrocatalyst is constructed. DFT calculations and microkinetics analysis demonstrate that the Ni site and Ni0.2Mo0.8N site have favorable hydroxyl and hydrogen species adsorption energetics, respectively, which can cooperate synergistically towards alkaline hydrogen evolution. The resulting electrocatalyst shows excellent HER electrocatalytic performance with an overpotential of about 70 mV at 300 mA cm−2 and a Tafel slope of 33 mV dec−1. It also offers outstanding operational stability at large current densities up to 200 mA cm−2. Further theoretical calculations suggest a tip-enhanced-like local electric field around the topmost Ni nanoparticles, leading to increased K-ion concentration in the inner Helmholtz plane. The HER kinetics and surface reactant density can be simultaneously improved by this hierarchical Ni0.2Mo0.8N/Ni electrocatalyst. This study might open up new avenues of reasonable design of hierarchical structures for superior electrocatalysts.

Abstract:Hydrogen energy serves as an ideal alternative energy carrier to fossil fuels in the future clean energy system. The hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) occurring at the cathode of water electrocatalysis has been considered as a promising approach to produce hydrogen over the past decades due to zero carbon emission. To gain a deep insight into the advanced electrocatalyst, herein, we provide a comprehensive review with an emphasis on the recent state-of-the-art advances of HER electrocatalysts in view of controlling their local electronic structure, creating defect nanostructures, exposing active sites, altering d band center, and constructing heterogeneous structure. Initially, we start with a brief introduction of the fundamental electrocatalytic mechanisms and the critical electrochemical parameters for evaluating HER. Then, we systemically discuss three representative classes of electrocatalysts, comprised of highly active noble-metal including single atom, nanoparticles, and clusters, earth-abundant transition metal such as transition metal sulfides, phosphides, carbides, nitrides, and oxides, and metal-free functional nanomaterials involving different dimensions of carbonaceous nanomaterials, boron nitrogen, and phosphorous non-carbonaceous nanomaterials by adjusting their tunable electronic structures and architectures/morphologies with a particular emphasis on the structure–function relationships. Finally, we point out the current challenges and opportunities in view of achieving highly active and stable electrocatalysts towards practical applications.

Abstract:As a clean energy source, hydrogen plays a critical role in the global mission to achieve carbon neutrality. Among varied hydrogen production techniques, water electrolysis driven by clean energy, such as solar or wind energy, is the most promising and viable option, with the advantages of celerity, high efficiency, cleanliness, and sustainability. However, this process necessitates a highly active and durable hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) catalyst to enhance the overall reaction efficiency. This article thoroughly reviews the recent development of electrocatalysts exhibiting high-performance HER. In particular, a comprehensive look at noble metals platinum (Pt), ruthenium (Ru), iridium (Ir), and non-noble metals, including sulfides, carbides, nitrides and phosphides is taken. Synthesis strategies, methods for enhancing performance, and the correlation between structure, composition, and catalytic performance are discussed. We also pay particular attention to density functional theory (DFT) calculations to reveal the mechanisms behind the improvement of HER performance. Finally, the critical challenges associated with electrochemical water splitting and propose coping strategies are presented.

Abstract:The electrolysis of water for sustainable hydrogen producing is a crucial segment of various emerging clean-energy technologies. However, pursuing an efficient and cheap alternative catalyst to substitute state-of-the-art platinum-group electrocatalysts remains a prerequisite for the commercialization of this technology. Typically, precious-metal-free catalysts have always much lower activities towards hydrogen production than that of Pt-group catalysts. To explore high-performance catalysts, maximally exposed active sites, rapid charge transfer ability and desirable electronic configuration are essentially demanded. Herein, the fundamentals of hydrogen evolution reaction will be briefly described and the main focus will be on the interfacial engineering strategies by means of constructing defect structure, creating heterojunction, phase engineering, lattice strain control, designing hierarchical architecture and doping heteroatoms to effectively proliferate the catalytic active sites, facilitate the electron diffusion and regulate the electronic configuration of numerous transition metals and their nitrides, carbides, sulfides, phosphides as well as oxides, achieving a benchmark performance of platinum-free electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction. This review unambiguously offers proof that the conventional cheap and earth-abundant transition metal-based substances can be translated into an active water splitting catalyst by the rational and controllable interfacial designing.

Abstract:The path to searching for sustainable energy has never stopped since the depletion of fossil fuels can lead to serious environmental pollution and energy shortages. Using water electrolysis to produce hydrogen has been proven to be a prioritized approach for green resource production. It is highly crucial to explore inexpensive and high‐performance electrocatalysts for accelerating hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and apply them to industrial cases on a large scale. Here, we summarize the different mechanisms of HER in different pH settings and review recent advances in non‐noble‐metal‐based electrocatalysts. Then, based on the previous efforts, we discuss several universal strategies for designing pH‐independent catalysts and show directions for the future design of pH‐universal catalysts.

Abstract:Hydrogen is considered to be an ideal safe and clean energy source, which can be produced by water splitting. The high overpotential of hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is one of the bottleneck issues for the practical application of water splitting, where high-efficiency electrocatalysts are thus usually required to accommodate and facilitate the reaction. In recent years, a rapid rise in the HER electrocatalysts has been witnessed, especially nanostructured materials. Noble metals are generally regarded as the most effective electrocatalysts for HER, while some other electrocatalysts based on non-noble transition metals, including alloys, chalcogenides, phosphides, carbides and nitrides, can even approach the HER efficiency of noble metal benchmarks. This paper mainly introduces the basic principles of the HER process, evaluates different categories of nanostructured electrocatalytic materials, providing guidance for the design and fabrication of nanostructured HER catalysts. Moreover, recent progress and future research directions regarding the performance of metallic nanostructured materials are also discussed.Graphic

Abstract:Hydrogen, a renewable and clean energy carrier, is the best alternative to fossil fuels. Hydrogen evolution from water electrolysis using renewable electrical energy is quite attractive. Noble-metal-based materials are currently considered the best electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) at the cathode of electrolysis cells. Noble metal nanocluster and single atom electrocatalysts as model materials with an ultra-small size and high atomic utilization have shown promising catalytic HER performance. In this paper, recent research efforts toward developing advanced noble metal nanocluster and single atom electrocatalysts supported on different support materials with high performance for water splitting catalysis are reviewed and analyzed in terms of their design, synthesis, characterization, catalytic mechanisms, and HER performance validation and optimization. The technical challenges in researching and developing such nanocluster and single atom HER electrocatalysts are discussed and future research directions are also proposed for overcoming the challenges toward their practical application.

Abstract:This progress report summarizes the recent advances in the electrocatalysts design guided by active intermediates of the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Emphasis is focused on the discussion of key intermediates that determine HER activity and the strategies to tune the interaction between active sites and reaction intermediates. Prospects for the future development of electrocatalysts based on the active intermediates are also provided. Hydrogen production from water electrolysis plays an important role for the development of hydrogen‐based energy sources. Developing efficient electrocatalysts is crucial for accelerating the reaction kinetics and achieving large‐scale water electrolysis. Despite the significant advancements in electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) achieved over the past few decades, there remains a lack of comprehensive discussion on the in‐depth mechanism for the enhanced activity, particularly with regard to the active intermediates. Recently, with the development of state‐of‐the‐art characterization methods and theoretical computation, optimizing interaction between reaction intermediates and corresponding active sites has been demonstrated as an effective strategy to enhance the intrinsic catalytic activity. Herein, the recent advances in the electrocatalysts design guided by active intermediates of HER are presented. Emphasis is focused on the discussion of key intermediates that determine HER activity and the strategies to tune the interaction between active sites and reaction intermediates. Finally, an outlook on future challenges and perspectives on the development of electrocatalysts based on the active intermediates is given.

Abstract:The electrocatalytic hydrogen-evolution reaction (HER), as the main step of water splitting and the cornerstone of exploring the mechanism of other multi-electron transfer electrochemical processes, is the subject of extensive studies. A large number of high-performance electrocatalysts have been developed for HER accompanied by recent significant advances in exploring its electrochemical nature. Herein we present a critical appraisal of both theoretical and experimental studies of HER electrocatalysts with special emphasis on the electronic structure, surface (electro)chemistry, and molecular design. It addresses the importance of correlating theoretical calculations and electrochemical measurements toward better understanding of HER electrocatalysis at the atomic level. Fundamental concepts in the computational quantum chemistry and its relation to experimental electrochemistry are also presented along with some featured examples.

Abstract:Sustainable electrocatalytic hydrogen production is a vital method for producing clean energy. However, the current platinum catalysts are costly and complicated to prepare with low catalytic activity. To obtain efficient catalysts, a facile method with a rational electrode design is essential to improve platinum activity and stability, facilitating the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Herein, we fabricated a self-supported HER composite electrode with abundant platinum activity sites by a simple metal–organic chemical vapor deposition, and nanostructured pine-like platinum was supported on carbon cloth (Pt/CC). Benefiting from the nanostructured pine-like platinum geometry, fast charge transfer, and good structure stability, this Pt/CC composite electrode exhibited excellent HER electrocatalytic activity. For HER, this electrode achieved a low overpotential of only 17.6 mV at 10 mA cm–2 in 1 M KOH. Moreover, Pt/CC exhibits long-term electrochemical durability, maintaining its catalytic activity for more than 30 h. What is more, this strategy can also be used on other self-supported substrates, e.g., nickel foam, to achieve high electrocatalytic activity. Thus, this work provides a simple and versatile method for the preparation of efficient HER catalysts.

Abstract:Considering the importance of earth‐abundant, cost‐effective, and highly active Fe‐based self‐supported electrocatalysts, their various preparation methods according to their engineering strategies, the corresponding electrochemical performance, underlying mechanisms, and respective challenges are discussed as well. Electrochemical water splitting plays a vital role in facilitating the transition towards a sustainable energy future by enabling renewable hydrogen (H2) production, energy storage, and emission‐free transportation. Developing earth‐abundant electrocatalysts with outstanding overall water‐splitting performance, excellent catalytic activity, and robust long‐term stability is highly important in the practical application of water electrolysis. Self‐supported electrocatalysts have emerged as the most appealing candidate for practical H2 production due to their increased active site loading, rapid mass and charge transfer, and strong interaction with the underneath conducting support. Additionally, these electrocatalysts also provide enhanced reaction kinetics and stability. Here, a comprehensive review of recent progress in developing self‐supported Fe‐based electrocatalysts for water splitting and selective oxidation reactions is presented with examples of oxyhydroxides, layered double hydroxides, oxides, chalcogenides, phosphides, nitrides, and other Fe‐containing electrocatalysts. A comprehensive historical development in the synthesis of self‐supported Fe‐based electrocatalysts is provided, with an emphasis on the various deposition methods and the choice of self‐supported conducting substrates considering large‐scale commercial applications. An overview of mechanistic understanding and approaches for enhanced H2 production are also presented. Finally, the challenges and opportunities associated with developing Fe‐based electrocatalysts for practical applications in water splitting and alternative oxidation reactions are discussed.

Abstract:Locating the active sites and understanding the reaction mechanism are crucial for the design and preparation of higher hydrogen evolution activity catalysts. If these theoretical knowledges can be combined with practical large-scale hydrogen production, the development of electrochemical water splitting will be further promoted. In this review, we have first summarized the active sites of recent reported HER catalysts, including transition metals molybdenum, iron, nickel, cobalt and noble metal-based materials. At the same time, the mechanisms of hydrogen evolution followed by each catalyst and corresponding strategies for improving their catalytic activity are also discussed. In addition, from the point of practical application, the testing conditions, achievements already made and challenges that to be faced for each type of material are also proposed. The implementation of this work is helpful for researchers to master the electrocatalyst from a deeper perspective (including hydrogen adsorption energy, water adsorption energy, water dissociation energy, active surface and active site.), thus promoting the development of water electrolysis.

Abstract:A robust and efficient non-precious metal catalyst for hydrogen evolution reaction is one of the key components for carbon dioxide-free hydrogen production. Here we report that a hierarchical nanoporous copper-titanium bimetallic electrocatalyst is able to produce hydrogen from water under a mild overpotential at more than twice the rate of state-of-the-art carbon-supported platinum catalyst. Although both copper and titanium are known to be poor hydrogen evolution catalysts, the combination of these two elements creates unique copper-copper-titanium hollow sites, which have a hydrogen-binding energy very similar to that of platinum, resulting in an exceptional hydrogen evolution activity. In addition, the hierarchical porosity of the nanoporous copper-titanium catalyst also contributes to its high hydrogen evolution activity, because it provides a large-surface area for electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution, and improves the mass transport properties. Moreover, the catalyst is self-supported, eliminating the overpotential associated with the catalyst/support interface.

Abstract:Surface high‐entropy NiFeCoCuTi alloy on hierarchical nanoporous Ni skeleton holds great promise as low‐cost efficient electrocatalysts with multisite electroactive center for ampere‐level current‐density hydrogen evolution. Associated with column‐nanostructured nanoporous Ni skeleton that facilitates electron transfer/mass transportation and enables highly accessible and abundant electroactive sites, self‐supported monolithic nanoporous high‐entropy NiFeCoCuTi alloy exhibits superior nonacidic hydrogen‐evolution reaction electrocatalysis with exceptional stability. Developing robust nonprecious metal‐based electrocatalysts toward hydrogen evolution reaction is crucial for large‐scale hydrogen production via electrochemical water splitting. Herein, surface high‐entropy NiFeCoCuTi alloy on column‐nanostructured nanoporous Ni skeleton is reported as multisite electrocatalyst for highly efficient hydrogen evolution in nonacidic environments by making use of surface heterogeneous atoms with distinct hydrogen and hydroxyl adsorption behaviors to accelerate water dissociation and mediate adsorption of hydrogen intermediates for combination into molecules. Associated with the column‐nanostructured nanoporous Ni skeleton that facilitates electron transfer/mass transportation and enables highly accessible and abundant electroactive sites, self‐supported monolithic nanoporous high‐entropy NiFeCoCuTi alloy electrode exhibits superior nonacidic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) electrocatalysis, with low onset overpotentials and Tafel slopes. It only takes overpotential of as low as ≈209 mV to deliver ultrahigh current density of 2 A cm−2, along with exceptional stability for more than 240 h, in 1 m KOH electrolyte. These outstanding properties make nanoporous NiFeCoCuTi high‐entropy alloy (HEA) electrode attractive candidate as cathode material in the water electrolysis for large‐scale hydrogen production and suggest HEAs as ideal platform to develop multisite electrocatalysts.
