Abstract:Donna Haraway’s ‘A Cyborg Manifesto: Science, Technology, and Socialist-Feminism in the Late Twentieth Century’, first published in the Socialist Review in 1985, is by far her best-known work.1 Her proposal to displace the feminist myth of the goddess with that of the cyborg, ‘a hybrid of machine and organism, a creature of social reality as well as a creature of fiction’ (1991: 149), signaled her commitment to a socialist-feminism that is neither technophilic nor technophobic but fully engaged with the problematics of the interpenetration of nature and culture in such diverse realms as biology, ecology, cybernetics, economics, politics and ethics. In Simians, Cyborgs and Women: The Reinvention of Nature (1991), which included a revised version of ‘A Cyborg Manifesto’, and in Modest_Witness@Second_Millennium.FemaleMan©Meets_OncoMouse™: Feminism and Technoscience (1997), Haraway continued her exploration of these issues in rhetorical terms largely consonant with those of the ‘Cyborg Manifesto’. In 2003, however, she adopted a new master trope and discursive idiom in The Companion Species Manifesto: Dogs, People, and Significant Otherness, upon which she expanded in her 2008 study, When Species Meet. In these last two books, her focus is not on cyborgs but on dogs, and specifically her passionate participation in ‘the doghuman sport called agility’ (2008: 26).

Discute-se o ensejo da autora em propor um mito ciborgue, profícuo a um ideário feminista emancipador, pautado na luta contra uma linguagem universal, que, ilusoriamente, seria capaz de codificar fidedignamente a realidade. Além disso, destaca-se a visão da autora acerca da escrita como uma tecnologia ciborgue, em uma luta pela linguagem contra a univocidade da comunicação e de um código que traduza a realidade de modo perfeito. Abstract:This chapter introduces the work of the influential American feminist techno-science studies writer Donna Haraway and shows how it may be used to theorise the new digital technologies used in the health and medical sphere. Haraway’s concept of the cyborg has particularly inspired cultural theorists who have written about the implications of technologies for human embodiment and subjectivity. She argues that all individuals in contemporary Western societies have become cyborgs (a term that melds ‘cybernetic’ and ‘organism’) in their interaction with technologies, blurring the distinction between human and machine. She further uses concept of the cyborg as a metaphor for political contestation and action.

Abstract:In the 80’s representatives of the second wave feminist theory nurtured hopes that new technologies would become an effective instrument of liberating from binary oppositions of patriarchal culture. Donna Haraway saw the potential of social transformations in cybernetic technologies. The fusion of biological, mechanical and cybernetic was to have led to the emergence of new cyborg subjectivity. It should be capable of creating its own culture as well as a new world. Later this narrative would be widely criticized, but in this optimistic form it greatly affected science fiction of the period. The author makes an attempt to present the theoretical components of cyberfeminism as science fiction that engenders cognitive estrangement. Catchy images of cyborgs were born in the performative framework of cyberfeminist theory and popular culture. They continue to affect imagination to the present day. Japanese animation stood at the vanguard of this cultural process. The article considers the visions drawn in Japan as a narrative that represents historical evolution of cyberfeminism. The end of anime’s “golden age” meant the end of a thorough work with cyberfeminism in the language of popular culture. The findings of the study reveal that cyberfeminism is a part of general theory that has subsequently become a part of global discourse of a new posthuman subject. The article emphasises the other part of the phenomenon – cyberfeminist practice – that has successfully adapted to the modern world.

Abstract:In the light Donna Haraway’s work The Cyborg Manifesto this paper analyses the difficulties of adapting Cyborg model of feminism in a developing country like India. Initially the concept of cyborg feminism (Bell, 108) as introduced by Haraway is used to analyse the implicit ideology of Western cyborg science fiction movies. Through the analysis of popular western cyborg movies like Alita: Battle Angel (2019) and Blade Runner 2049 (2017), the absence of gender duality in cyborg world as predicted by Donna Haraway is proved wrong. Later the concept of cyborg feminism in the present society is shown to be inadequate showing the glass ceiling effect and how technology is sided with patriarchy. Finally the limitation of Cyborg feminism especially in a third world country like India is revealed considering its historical, political and cultural diversity. Socialist feminism and identity politics is more essential in the present society than a foreseeing women’s liberation in a technically developed future.

Abstract:In her oft-cited “A Cyborg Manifesto,” Donna Haraway conceptualizes the cyborg as a feminist possibility, emphasizing the need for a self-created, self-engendered female (150). In How We Became Posthuman (1999), N. Katherine Hayles examines the development of cybernetic theory from the 1940s to the present, linking its history to portrayals of cyborgs and artificial intelligence in science fiction. I argue that the combination of change and tradition embodied by Brazilian cyborgs must be understood within the history and paradigms of Latin American culture and its ambivalent attitudes towards modernity. To understand Brazil’s female cyborgs, I apply Bolívar Echeverría’s concept of the Latin American “baroque ethos,” which acts a form of resistance to capitalism in the works by Caio Fernando Abreu, Roberto de Sousa Causo and João Paulo Cuenca, whose female cyborgs question or refute societal expectations, while searching for acceptance in romantic partnerships or family structures. The presence of female cyborgs in Brazil during distinct moments of economic and technological change—from the period of the military dictatorship and state sponsored industrialization in the 1970s to the contemporary digital global economy in the 2000s—illustrates how cyborg body functions as feminized avatars of labor, mourning, survival and resistance.

Abstract:In her widely cited and influential "cyborg manifesto", Donna Haraway argues that "cyborg imagery" can provide a way out of the maze of dualisms we have used to explain our bodies and our tools to ourselves and concludes by asserting that she would rather be a cyborg than a goddess. We depart from the cyborg/goddess distinction by invoking a widely recognised archetype in Japanese popular media, namely the mahou shoujo (magical girl), who holds a dual identity as an earthly being (usually an adolescent schoolgirl) and a heavenly being (a super-powered girl/woman on a mission against sinister beings). We demonstrate that the distinctively Japanese figurations of the "magical girl" and the "heavenly woman" can generate "lines of flight" that invite Anglophone science educators to move beyond the Anglosphere's "maze of dualisms" and science education's regulation by dominant systems of signification. Specifically, we invite science educators to rethink representations of gender and technology (e.g. artificial intelligence, robotics) in the light of Masumune Shirou's manga (comic/graphic novel), The Ghost in the Shell, and its adaptation in Mamouri Oshii's similarly titled anime (animated film).

Abstract:Feminist digital geographies are an important part of the digital turn currently underway in geographic scholarship. At the same time, feminist movements are taking advantage of, and emerging from, digital spaces. This article considers how the digital intersects with gender and what opportunities the digital affords feminist movements. We do so by drawing on a case study of feminist activism within Destroy the Joint (DTJ), an online social media activist group, and build a qualitative analysis of a dynamic, reflexive digital space. Qualitative studies of emotion, affect and the power of digital geographies, including social media spaces populated by groups like DTJ, demonstrate how cultural and social practices are changing along with technologies. This research does not draw on a techno-deterministic approach to digital geographies but forwards a feminist perspective that critically engages with the constraints and possibilities of the complex, paradoxical and contingent within the digital.

Abstract:The cyborg is the most important futurological character, and its analysis is the purpose of this article. In order for the understanding of the Cyborg not to be limited to the idea of the complementation of man and machine, philosophical reflection is required. Methodological basis of the research: the method of topological reflection allows analyzing works of mass art as the “subconscious” of culture. The author analyzes the topos and the Cyborg concept, comparing them. The article considers the computer game “Cyberpunk 2077” as a Cyborg topos. The concept of the cyborg is analyzed mainly on the example of the philosophical concept of “cybergotics” (N. Land). The author suggests a thought experiment: taking into account the arguments of the “materialistic” direction of media theory and the concept of a Cyborg, present the concept of a game about a Cyborg, and then compare it with the analyzed topos. As a result, it becomes clear that the concept and the topos of the Cyborg represent opposite cultural strategies, although we are talking about the same futurological character. This internal conflict allows us to talk about the Cyborg as a “new Proteus”: he is “multi-faceted” and is associated with the “art of concealment”. The Cyborg “hides” deep intentions, and this prevents us from considering the Cyborg in the spirit of exclusively transhumanism. The author shows that the connotations of the machinery in this image are related to the needs of the “upgrade”. It is designed to preserve human identity. The scientific novelty of the research is to develop a reflexive approach to the Cyborg as an important media figure, as well as to explore its futurological potential. The differentiation of the concept and the topos allows for a more comprehensive view of a complex cultural phenomenon. A new interpretation of the Cyborg is proposed. The results of the conducted research can be used in philosophical futurology (as arguments against excessive optimism of transhumanistic ideas), in media studies. In addition, the proposed approach can contribute to the development of the method of topological reflection.

Abstract:In "A Cyborg Manifesto", Donna Haraway (2006. "A Cyborg Manifesto: Science, Technology, and Socialist-Feminism in the Late twentieth Century." In The International Handbook of Virtual Learning Environments, edited by Joel Weiss, Jason Nolan, Jeremy Hunsinger, and Peter Trifonas, 117–158. New York: Springer) set forth the cyborg as figure that could symbolize a move beyond the binaries and categorizations that have defined feminist identity politics, toward hybridities that exist along a continuum of organic-inorganic, fiction-reality, nature-culture. In the concrete manifestations of the cyborg and the cyborg body in science fiction, however, this has not been the case, with gender binaries reinscribed more often than challenged. In the case of the female cyborg, these characters find inclusion in many science fiction narratives only as fetishistic caricatures or are infantilized, existing only as manifestations of their use value, existing to satisfy the sexual needs of human men rather than as fully realized beings. However, Bruna Husky of Rosa Montero's eponymous trilogy – comprising Lágrimas en la lluvia, El peso del corazón and Los tiempos del odio – breaks this restrictive mold. This essay proposes that through Bruna in Lágrimas en la lluvia, Montero destabilizes masculinist gendered conceptions and performativity of the female cyborg body that permeate science fiction. Bruna demonstrates what Ramzi Fawaz (2016. The New Mutants: Superheroes and the Radical Imagination of American Comics. New York: New York University Press) calls "fluxability", that is, a state of continual material and psychic becoming rather than being, capable of going beyond binaries and negotiating multiple, contradictory identities and/or affiliations. Furthermore, in Bruna's interactions with human and nonhuman life, Montero highlights how the limits of humanity–inhumanity become blurred, porous and highly relational in the posthuman reality of the future world she depicts.

But social media closes down that space, Megarry’s caution is right there in the title of this book, No Space of Our Own.” (Kathleen Barry, author of The Prostitution of Sexuality & Susan B. Anthony: A Biography) #MeToo. Digital networking. Facebook groups. Social media continues to be positioned by social movement scholars as an exciting new tool that has propelled feminism into a dynamic fourth wave of the movement. But how does male power play out on social media, and what is the political significance of women using male-controlled and algorithmically curated platforms for feminism? To answer these questions, Megarry foregrounds an analysis of the practices and ethics of the historical Women’s Liberation Movement (WLM), including the revolutionary characteristics of face-to-face organising and the development of an autonomous print culture. Centering discussions of time, space and surveillance, she utilises radical and lesbian feminist theory to expose the contradictions between the political project of women’s liberation and the dominant celebratory narratives of Web 2.0. This is the first book to seriously consider how social media perpetuates the enduring logic of patriarchy and howdigital activism shapes women’s oppression in the 21st century. Drawing on interviews with intergenerational feminist activists from the UK, the USA, Australia, Canada and New Zealand, as well as archival and digital activist materials, Megarry boldly concludes that feminists should abandon social media and return to the transformative powers of older forms of women-centred political praxis. This book will be of interest to scholars and students of Women’s and Gender Studies, Lesbian and Queer Studies, Social Movement Studies, Critical Internet Studies and Political Communication, as well as anyone with an interest in feminist activism and the history of the WLM. Abstract:The authors review theoretical trends in HMC research, as well as recent critical interventions in the HMC journal that usefully reshape and expand our research terrain. Conventional research such as positivist and quantified approaches are identified as restraining research questions and delimiting understandings of concepts including subjects, agency and interactivity. Feminist cybernetic, critical race, postcolonial and crip theoretical approaches are offered, examining how they fill research gaps in HMC, expanding content areas explored, and addressing diverse intersectional pressures, situated, and time/space dynamics that impact human machine interaction. The authors suggest these shifts are essential to expanding HMC research to address diverse populations, regional realities around the globe, and engage in vibrant scholarly debates occurring outside HMC. They contend these shifts will outfit HMC to weigh in on important issues of justice, equity, and access that arise with emerging technologies, climate change, and globalization dynamics.

Abstract:Machines, from artificially intelligent digital assistants to embodied robots, are becoming more pervasive in everyday life. Drawing on feminist science and technology studies (STS) perspectives, we demonstrate how machine designers are not just crafting neutral objects, but relationships between machines and humans that are entangled in human social issues such as gender and power dynamics. Thus, in order to create a more ethical and just future, the dominant assumptions currently underpinning the design of these human-machine relations must be challenged and reoriented toward relations of justice and inclusivity. This paper contributes the "social machine" as a model for technology designers who seek to recognize the importance, diversity and complexity of the social in their work, and to engage with the agential power of machines. In our model, the social machine is imagined as a potentially equitable relationship partner that has agency and as an "other" that is distinct from, yet related to, humans, objects, and animals. We critically examine and contrast our model with tendencies in robotics that consider robots as tools, human companions, animals or creatures, and/or slaves. In doing so, we demonstrate ingrained dominant assumptions about human-machine relations and reveal the challenges of radical thinking in the social machine design space. Finally, we present two design challenges based on non-anthropomorphic figuration and mutuality, and call for experimentation, unlearning dominant tendencies, and reimagining of sociotechnical futures.

Abstract:Fritz Lang’s ground-breaking science-fiction film Metropolis (1927) has long held a particular fascination with film critics because of its exploration of the exploited proletariat and the dangers of human-machine interaction. While much academic interest in the film has focused on it as capitalist allegory – seen in the separation of the bourgeoisie above-ground from the proletariat underground – less attention has been paid to the film’s representation of the cyborg, and, more specifically, the cyborg femme. Drawing on posthuman theory, and in particular cyborg theory as proposed by Donna Haraway, this article investigates to what degree the film denies the true symbolic potency of the cyborg by casting its creation as reminiscent of Frankenstein’s monster. It asserts that Lang denies the film an imaginary, visual space within which the cyborg femme, though seeming human, is not afforded any agency—as Derrida asserts about the machine-animal—or her own will towards self-determination. Though interrogating what it means to possess human capacity, the article further asserts that Ridley Scott’s characterization of the replicants Rachael, Zohra and Pris in Blade Runner (1982) casts these cyborg femmes as expendable or dependent on the human to protect them, thereby denying them love.

Abstract:Cybernetics saturates the humanities. Norbert Wiener’s movement gave vocabulary and hardware to developments all across the early digital era, and still does so today to those who seek to interpret it. Even while the Macy Conferences were still taking place in the early 1950s, talk of feedback and information and pattern had spread to popular culture – and to Europe. The new science created a shared language and culture for surpassing political and intellectual ideas that could be relegated to a pre-computing tradition, and it refracted or channelled currents developing in fields from manufacturing to human physiology. It produced conceptions of the political world, as well as new forms of historical consciousness. It offered frameworks for structuralist thought, but also for policies regarding manufacturing and technology, international relations, and governmental decision-making. But the rising sense of the breadth, importance, and even shock of cybernetics long remained understudied, even as its intellectual assemblages continued to, well, relay. In devices and the so-called ‘digital humanities’, a refracted legacy of cybernetics is also visible. From mainframes to category-frameworks, cybernetics is everywhere in our material and intellectual worlds, even as the name and its meaning have faded. To the extent that cybernetics permeates the human sciences and our culture at large, it remains opaque – an only partially visible legacy often deemed too complex to form a simple object of historical narrative. This special issue on cybernetics in the human sciences outlines the history and stakes of cybernetics, as well as the possibilities of returning to it today.
