Abstract:On 18th March 2021 Hermann Flaschka passed away in Tucson Arizona. He was a Professor of Mathematics at the University of Arizona, well-known for his important contributions in completely integrable systems. He was a fellow of the American Mathematical Society, an awardee of the Norbert Wiener Prize in Applied Mathematics and one of the founding editors of Physica D. He was held in great esteem by his collaborators and students. This special issue collects a series of articles written by people who were close to Professor Flaschka during his career to honour his legacy.

Abstract:This volume is dedicated to the memory of Paul Waltman. Many of the authors of articles contained here were participantsat the NCTS International Conference on Nonlinear Dynamics with Applications to Biology heldMay 28-30, 2014 at National Tsing-Hua University, Hsinchu, Taiwan. The purpose of the conference was to survey new developmentsin nonlinear dynamics and its applications to biology and to honor the memory of Professor Paul Waltman for his influence on the development of Mathematical Biology and Dynamical Systems.Attendees at the conference included Paul's sons Fred and Dennis, many of Paul's former doctoral and post-doctoral students, many others who,although not students of Paul, nevertheless were recipients of Paul's valuable advice and council, and many colleagues from all over the worldwho were influenced by Paul's mathematics and by his personality. Abstract:Sergio Adamo prematurely left us on January 7th 2022, just one year after his retirement, leaving his family, friends and colleagues deeply sad and grieving. Sergio was a full Professor of Histology and Embryology at the Sapienza University of Rome. Since the foundation of the Institute of Histology and Embryology more than 50 years ago, he dedicated himself to the institution, research, and teaching with integrity, generosity, and a great sense of teamwork. Sergio's main research interests have been the mechanisms of myogenesis, muscle homeostasis and regeneration under normal and pathological conditions. Most relevant results obtained by Sergio and his collaborators indicate novel functions for the neurohypophyseal hormones, vasopressin and oxytocin, upon striated muscle differentiation, trophism, and homeostasis. Here we like to give the proper tribute to a mentor, a colleague and a sincere friend. He left an indelible mark on the professional and personal lives of all of us and his absence provokes a profound sense of emptiness.
Celebrating Thomas van der Hammen's 100th anniversary: contributions of an explorer palynologist to neotropical paleoecology

Abstract:We celebrate the 100 th anniversary of Thomas Van der Hammen (1924–2010). His career is a model of explorative environmental research in nearly all ecosystems of northern South America. He introduced palynological research into South America. As a PhD student he studied changes of climate, vegetation and landscape during the Lateglacial in Twente, eastern Netherlands. He continued his career in 1952 at the Geological Survey of Colombia with research, and teaching palynology and palaeobotany. He studied sediment archives from the Cretaceous to the Quaternary palynologically. He explored the potential of developing an understanding of the Quaternary history of neotropical ecosystems, the response to ice-ages in particular. In 1959 he returned to Leiden University where he succeeded professor Florschütz. In 1966 he was appointed at the University of Amsterdam and continued training Colombian and Dutch PhD students in studying the history of climate, flora and vegetation of northern South America, Amazonia and the Netherlands. He organised unparalleled transect studies through the Colombian Andes and collected a wealth of evidence in support of an elevational sequence of biodiversity. During decades Thomas skilfully used opportunities for research in academia as well as in industry. He gave structure for research at universities, municipalities, musea, ministries, and nature conservations. After his retirement he lived in Colombia. His country estate became a central meeting place where students, scientists, farmers, mayors, and even Ministers of State discussed the environmental past and future of Colombian ecosystems.

Abstract:This special issue on "Multiscale phenomena and patterns in biological systems" is an homage to the seminal contributions of Hans Othmer. He has remained at the forefront of multiscale modelling and pattern formation in biology for over half a century, developing models for molecular signalling networks, the mechanics of cellular movements, the interactions between multiple cells and their contributions to tissue patterning and dynamics. The contributions in this special issue follow Hans' legacy in using advanced mathematics to understand complex biological processes.

It covers a variety of topics but with a clear focus on spermatology where Jim's impact, as a scientist and teacher, was most profound. As a core member of the Editorial Board of Reproduction, Fertility and Development, for a series of Editors-in-Chief, he was a font of wisdom for all aspects of the field, including reproductive technology in humans, and acted as a guardian of editorial principles and ethics. Abstract:Editorial Super-resolution microscopy illuminated the hazy molecular world like a beacon, bringing significant changes to the fields of biology, optics and chemistry. Eric Betzig, who shared the 2014 Nobel Prize of Chemistry with Stefan Hell and William Moerner, is one of the inventors of this fantastic scientific tool. Working originally on near field optics, Dr. Betzig made a series of stunning achievements at Bell Labs before turning 35. Yet he quit, seemingly at the top of his game, to become a hands-on dad and joined the machinery business. Eventually, he missed science so much that he made a comeback and wowed everyone instantly with his work. He defies the conventional definition of “persistence” by demonstrating an alternative route to success. Plain-speaking and earnest, Dr. Betzig is sometimes honest to almost a fault, and always believes in doing practical things. He puts his heart and soul into everything he does, because he says he wants to truly live rather than simply pass through life. In science work, he is meticulous, yet he embraces risks and believes they can bring the best out of oneself. In life, he is a loving father who is always ready to take time from his busy research work to take his children to school or tennis lessons, and a caring teacher who never forgets to command the hard work of his postdocs.
