Abstract:This paper presents a study of the total cutting force used and selected parameters of the geometric structure of the surface (e.g., Sa, Sz) during the end milling process of NiTi alloy. The input parameters included are cutting speed (vc), feed per tooth (fz), and radial depth of cut (ae). A Box–Behnken experimental design was employed to conduct the research. The obtained experimental results were utilized within the framework of a response surface methodology (RSM) to develop mathematical and statistical models capable of predicting cutting force components and selected 3D surface parameters. These models provide valuable insights into the relationships between the cutting parameters and the output variables, facilitating the optimization of the NiTi alloy milling process. The findings of this study contribute to a better understanding of the behavior of NiTi alloy during the milling process and offer information for process optimization. By employing a Box–Behnken experimental design, it was possible to investigate the effects of different parameter combinations on the components of total cutting force and selected 3D surface parameters according to ISO 25178, thus aiding in the identification of optimal milling conditions to achieve desired outcomes in the machining of NiTi alloy.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is to study the relationship between the total cutting force and surface geometric structure parameters (such as Sa, Sz) during the end - milling process of NiTi alloy, and how these parameters affect the efficiency and surface quality of the machining process. Specifically, by using the Box - Behnken experimental design method, the author systematically explored the effects of three input parameters, namely cutting speed (\(v_c\)), feed per tooth (\(f_z\)) and radial depth of cut (\(a_e\)), on the cutting force components and selected three - dimensional surface parameters. Through the response surface method (RSM), mathematical and statistical models capable of predicting the cutting force components and selected 3D surface parameters were established, thus providing valuable insights for optimizing the milling process of NiTi alloy. ### Main objectives of the paper: 1. **Study the relationship between cutting parameters and cutting force**: Analyze the effects of cutting speed, feed per tooth and radial depth of cut on the cutting force components through experimental data. 2. **Study the relationship between cutting parameters and surface roughness**: Analyze the effects of the above - mentioned cutting parameters on surface roughness parameters (such as Sa and Sz). 3. **Establish prediction models**: Use the response surface method (RSM) to establish mathematical and statistical models to predict the cutting force components and surface roughness parameters. 4. **Optimize the milling process**: Provide optimization suggestions through the models to improve the efficiency and surface quality of the NiTi alloy milling process. ### Research background: - **Material characteristics**: NiTi alloy has unique properties such as shape memory and superelasticity, and is widely used in aerospace, medical and other fields. However, due to its high hardness, low thermal conductivity and poor machinability, the processing of NiTi alloy faces many challenges. - **Processing difficulties**: During the milling process, NiTi alloy will generate high temperature, rapid tool wear and continuous chips, resulting in low processing efficiency and poor surface quality. - **Research needs**: In order to improve the processing efficiency and surface quality, it is necessary to deeply understand the effects of cutting parameters on the cutting force and surface roughness, and optimize the processing parameters. ### Experimental design: - **Experimental method**: Use the Box - Behnken experimental design method and establish models through the response surface method (RSM). - **Experimental parameters**: Cutting speed (30 - 50 m/min), feed per tooth (0.01 - 0.04 mm/tooth), radial depth of cut (0.2 - 0.4 mm). - **Measuring tools**: Use Kistler 9257B piezoelectric dynamometer to measure the cutting force components, and use Taylor Hobson measurement system to measure the surface roughness parameters. ### Results and discussion: - **Cutting force analysis**: The experimental results show that the feed per tooth (\(f_z\)) and the radial depth of cut (\(a_e\)) have a significant impact on the cutting force components, while the influence of the cutting speed (\(v_c\)) is relatively small. - **Surface roughness analysis**: The feed per tooth (\(f_z\)) and the radial depth of cut (\(a_e\)) also have a significant impact on the surface roughness parameters (such as Sa and Sz). - **Model verification**: The validity of the model was verified by ANOVA analysis, indicating that the established model can accurately predict the cutting force components and surface roughness parameters. ### Conclusion: This study, through systematic experimental design and data analysis, reveals the influence mechanism of cutting parameters on the cutting force and surface roughness during the milling process of NiTi alloy, providing a scientific basis for optimizing the processing technology. These results are helpful for improving the processing efficiency and surface quality of NiTi alloy and promoting its wide application in the engineering field.
