Abstract:Alkali earth metal clusters have been the subject of intense interest due to the wide range of applications and unique characteristics of transition from nonmetallic to metallic bond. In this work, the structural evolution and electronic properties of neutral and anionic strontium-doped magnesium clusters have been studied by structural search code of CALYPSO and subsequent calculation of DFT at B3PW91 level. The results reveled that most of the Sr2Mgn0/– clusters are viewed as the substituted structures of corresponding pure magnesium clusters, in which the Sr atoms prefer to occupy the convex capped sites. Analysis of the natural population show that the Sr atoms always play the role of electron donor in the charge transfer process except for Sr2Mg1-3–. In the range of studied size, the neutral Sr2Mg8 cluster with a tower-like structure and outstanding stability is uncovered. The molecular orbital and chemical bonding analysis indicate that the stronger Sr-Mg interaction lead to s-p hybridization between Sr and Mg atoms can stabilize the Sr2Mg8 cluster.

Abstract:Divalent metal clusters have received great attention due to the interesting size-induced nonmetal-to-metal transition and fascinating properties dependent on cluster size, shape, and doping. In this work, the combination of the CALYPSO code and density functional theory (DFT) optimization is employed to explore the structural properties of neutral and anionic Mg n + 1 and SrMg n ( n = 2–12) clusters. The results exhibit that as the atomic number of Mg increases, Sr atoms are more likely to replace Mg atoms located in the skeleton convex cap. By analyzing the binding energy, second-order energy difference and the charge transfer, it can be found the SrMg 9 cluster with tower framework presents outstanding stability in a studied size range. Further, bonding characteristic analysis reveals that the stability of SrMg 9 can be improved due to the strong s–p interaction among the atomic orbitals of Sr and Mg atoms.

Abstract:Projects about alkaline-earth metals doped magnesium are hot issues constantly in cluster science, while research in terms of Mid-Sized Ba atoms doped magnesium cluster was unreported. We adopted the CALYPSO method coupled with DFT calculation to simplify the process of structure searching at the range of BanMgm 0/– (n = 1,2; m = 10–15) cluster. We found the doped Ba atoms tend to occupy convex capped sites in each structure. Meanwhile, the six-atom triangular prism as a major structure constructed the great mass of isomers. Based on the result of the relative stability survey, we selected BaMg13 – and Ba2Mg13 – to conduct further investigations, according to a different numbers of doped Ba atoms. Analysis of the bonding character manifests that the Mg-p orbital takes up the highest proportion for both BaMg13 – and Ba2Mg13 – cluster at HOMO, LUMO position as well as the existence of strong covalent bonds between Mg-Mg atoms and Ba-Mg atoms.

Abstract:Metallic clusters have received tremendous interest due to the unusual structure and bonding along with potential as the motif for novel nanomaterials. Herein, the global minimum structures of neutral and anionic Mgn0/− and CaMgn0/− (n = 2–15) clusters have been searched by utilizing the CALYPSO program with subsequent DFT calculations. For each cluster size, a large number of stable structures were converged, and then, the most stable ones were identified in light of the PES spectra and total energies. The results show that the most stable structures transform from planar to three-dimensional geometry at n = 3 and the hollow framework at n = 8, then to filled cage-like structure at n = 13. For all CaMgn0/− clusters, the Ca atom prefers to occupy the external capped site. The simulated PES, IR, and Raman spectra could provide additional ways to identify the structure of these clusters in the following experiments. In the range of studied size, a tower-like CaMg9 cluster is uncovered and proved to be a magic number cluster with superior stability. Analysis of charge transfer, molecular orbitals, multi-center bonds, and ELF reveals that the CaMg9 has 20 valence electrons of closed-shell 1S21P61D102S2 and more strong Ca-Mg bonds caused by spd hybridization.

Abstract:This paper reports systematic studies of small sized magnesium clusters doped with two barium atoms in both neutral and anionic species. The search, geometric optimization, and energy correction of stable and low-energy structures were completed using CALYPSO software package and DFT calculations. The structural evolution of Ba2Mgn0/– clusters (n = 1–10) with increasing size were elucidated, and we found that most of the ground-state isomers of them inherit that of the corresponding pure Mg clusters well in terms of structure. After verifying the NBO (natural bond orbital) charge of the low-lying Ba2Mgn0/– clusters (n = 1–10), a new fact was exposed: that all the doped Ba atoms in the structures are positively charged except in Ba2Mg–. A pagoda-like most-stable cluster Ba2Mg8 with a HOMO-LUMO gap of 1.59 eV was found by relative stability analysis within the scope of our study. Further analyses of the molecular orbitals and bonding of Ba2Mg8 clusters also revealed a strong interaction between Ba-6 s and Mg-3p AOs, which may be the main reason for the high stability of Ba2Mg8. We hope our studies will provide guidance for the synthesis and application of doped Mg-based nanomaterials in the future.

Abstract:Bimetallic clusters aroused a great deal of attention in materials science because of their novel properties, depending sensitively on their size, structure, and composition. Herein, we report a theoretical study of the geometry, stability, electronic and vibrational properties of bimetallic NaMg n – ( n = 2–11) clusters through CALYPSO code within DFT calculations. The most stable NaMg n – clusters were found to be planar structure at n = 2, triangular pyramid-based structure at n = 3–5, pentagonal pyramid-based structure at n = 6–7 and the triangular prism-based structure at n = 8–11. Most of them are structurally consistent with anionic magnesium clusters, in which the Na atom tends to localize on the convex site. Stability studies conform to the NaMg 3 – and NaMg 9 – clusters to being the magic number structure with prominent stability, which benefits from short interatomic bonds and closed-shell 1S 2 1P 6 and 1S 2 1P 6 1D 10 2S 2 electronic configurations. Bonding nature analysis not only reflects the delocalized bonding properties in the NaMg 3 – and NaMg 9 – clusters, but also reveals that the Mg-Mg bond is stronger than the Na-Mg bond. For the NaMg n – clusters, calculated PES , IR, and Raman spectra could be used as essential evidence for identifying cluster structures experimentally in the future.

Abstract:Bimetallic clusters received tremendous interest because the unusual physicochemical properties vary sensitively depending on their geometry, size, and composition. Here, we combined an efficient CALYPSO structural searching code and DFT calculations to study the structures and properties of magnesium clusters doped with two Li atoms, Li2Mgn (n = 1–11). Compared with pure Mgn clusters, it is found that Li doping induces a significant influence on the geometry and stability of the host. The structures of Li2Mgn are present a 2D to 3D transition at n = 3, slightly later than pure and single Li doped magnesium clusters. Localized sites of two Li atoms change from the convex position to the external capped position at n = 11. All positive charges on Li atoms illustrate a charge transfer from Li to Mg in doped clusters. Analysis of internal charges on the atomic orbitals shows an increased metallicity for Li2Mgn with increasing cluster size. Two triangular bipyramid structures, Li2Mg3 and Li2Mg9, were uncovered and proved to be the magic number ones with outstanding stability. The study of molecular orbitals and bonding nature implies that their higher stability is associated with the 1S21P6 and 1S21P61D102S2 closed-shell together with more strong Li-Mg bonds caused by sp hybridization. The simulated IR and Raman spectra could provide additional ways to identify the structure of these clusters in the following experiments.

This finding is supported by multi-centre bonds and Mayer bond order analyses.

Abstract:Electronic structures of magnesium clusters (up to 57 atoms) are studied by the spin-unrestricted density functional theory with a local density approximation. As the cluster size increases, more 3p electrons will be involved in the sp hybridization. The obtained energy gap, binding energy and electronic structure suggest that the convergence of Mg clusters toward the bulk bonding is slower than that of Be clusters.

Abstract:The structures and electronic properties of low-energy neutral and anionic Mgn (n = 3-20) clusters have been studied by utilizing a widely adopted CALYPSO structure searching method coupled with density functional theory calculations. A large number of low-energy isomers are optimized at the B3PW91 functional with the 6-311+G(d) basis set. The optimized geometries clearly indicate that a structural transition from hollow three-dimensional configurations to filled-cage-like structures occurs at n = 16 for both neutral and anionic clusters. Based on the anionic ground state structures, photoelectron spectra are simulated using time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) and compared with experimental results. The good agreement validates that the current ground state structures, obtained from the symmetry-unconstrained searches, are true global minima. A detailed chemical bonding analysis distinctly indicates that the Mg17 cluster is the first neutral locally π-aromatic homonuclear all-metal cluster, which perfectly satisfies Hückel's well-known 4N + 2 rule.

Abstract:In this work, we explored the structures and electronic properties of Sr n −/0 ( n = 3–20) clusters through a hybrid particle swarm optimization and genetic algorithm coupled with density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The structures of these Sr n − ( n = 3–20) clusters have been confirmed by the comparison of the simulated and experimental photoelectron spectra (PESs). The results show that anionic and neutral Sr clusters share the same geometric configurations, following a roughly gradual growth pattern. For sizes n = 3–13, an icosahedral structure stepwisely formed. Then, the resulting icosahedron is capped with the remaining Sr atoms from Sr 14 to Sr 19 , finally forming a 19-atom double icosahedron. Adding an excess Sr atom to the waist of Sr 19 can obtain the structure of Sr 20 . Both of vertical detachment energy and average binding energy values share roughly decreasing trends with the increasing cluster size, while the HOMO–LUMO gaps show a roughly opposite trend. The secondary-order energy differences show that sizes n = 7, 10, 13, and 19 are the magic numbers for both of anionic and neutral Sr clusters, which indicates that it is the geometric structure, not the electron configuration, that primarily dominates the stability of the Sr cluster.

Abstract:The optimized structure and electronic properties of neutral and singly charged magnesium clusters have been investigated using ab initio theoretical methods based on density-functional theory and systematic post-Hartree-Fock many-body perturbation theory accounting for all electrons in the system. We have systematically calculated the optimized geometries of neutral and singly charged magnesium clusters consisting of up to 21 atoms, electronic shell closures, binding energies per atom, ionization potentials and the gap between the highest occupied and the lowest unoccupied molecular orbitals. We have investigated the transition to the hcp structure and metallic evolution of the magnesium clusters, as well as the stability of linear chains and rings of magnesium atoms. The results obtained are compared with the available experimental data and the results of other theoretical works.

Abstract:The geometrical and electronic properties of small Al-doped Zrn−1 and host Zrn clusters (n=2–8) are investigated with hybrid HF/DFT functional: B3LYP. For the most favorable configurations of Zrn−1Al clusters, the Al atom prefers to be located on the surface of host zirconium clusters. The isomers that correspond to low coordination number of Zr–Al bonds are found to be more stable. The doping of Al atom in Zrn−1 clusters improves the chemical activities of host clusters. The Zr5, Zr7, Zr4Al and Zr6Al clusters behave the stronger stabilities relative to their respective neighbors. The strong s–d hybridizations are presented in all bonding Zr atoms. The values of WBI together with AIM analysis suggest that the Zr–Zr interactions are stronger than those between Zr and Al atoms. The doping of Al atom results into the decrease of spin magnetic moments for host zirconium clusters. The moments are mainly derived from the 4d electrons of bonding Zr atoms.

Abstract:Sc-doped semiconductor clusters are the simplest transition metal-and rare-earth metal-doped semiconductor clusters. In this work, the structural evolution behavior and electronic properties of Sc-doped neutral and anionic Si-n (n = 4-16) clusters were studied using the ABCluster global search technique coupled with a hybrid density functional method. The results revealed that although neutral and anionic configurations are different for ScSin (n = 6-14) clusters, the evolution pattern of the ground-state structures is consistent (evolution of linked to encapsulated structures starting from n = 14). The good agreement between the theoretical and experimental photoelectron spectra demonstrated that the obtained anionic global minimum structures are reasonable. The excellent agreement between the adiabatic electron affinities corrected by considering the structural correction factor and the experimental data indicated that the structural correction factor is important for reproducing the experimental data and that the obtained ground-state structures for the neutral ScSin clusters reported herein are reliable. The relative stability and chemical bonding analysis showed that the fully encapsulated ScSi16- cluster is a magic cluster with good thermodynamic and chemical stability.

Abstract:Here we reported the structures, electronic, spectral and thermodynamic properties of MBn −(M = La, Ce, Pr; n = 8, 9) clusters using Crystal structure Analysis by Particle Swarm Optimization (CALYPSO) searching method and density functional theory (DFT). Results found that the lowest structures of MBn −(M = La, Ce, Pr; n = 8, 9) possess the half-sandwich structure with Cs symmetry, respectively. Based on the lowest energy structures, the electronic properties are analyzed by calculating charge transfer, electron localization function and polarizability; the photoelectron spectra, infrared spectra, Raman spectra and UV-vis spectra are computationally simulated to facilitate their spectral characterizations. At last, thermodynamic properties are symmetrically investigated for doped systems. We believe that our research will provide useful motivation for further experimental and theoretical investigations of lanthanide-doped boron based nanomaterials.

Abstract:A theoretical study of MC2’s band structures and electronic properties. The chemical bonds are admixed with an ionic bond between M2+ and C22- and a strong covalent bond in anion clusters. Orbital hybridization effect is more evident with small ionic radius and atomic number, which lead the structure I4/mmm to P42/mnm. Relatively flat dispersion relations of band structures are indicated the localized bonding state and population analysis provided further information on this aspect. After analyzing the DOS, the valence band near the EF are all dominated by 2p orbit of carbon atoms and metals are important for conduction band.

Abstract:Geometry optimization and electronic properties of BMgn, AlMgn(n=1—12) clusters have been studied based on density functional theory (DFT). With the increase of the number of Mg atoms, the boron atom gradually comes into the interior of the Mgn cluster. However, the growth patterns of AlMgn clusters are similar to that of magnesium clusters. Doping of a B or Al atom makes the average binding energy higher and the stability enhanced. The atomic configuration plays a dominant role in the stability of B, Al atom doped magnesium clusters. The induction of B, Al atoms makes the NBO charge population of host magnesium clusters obviously altered. The peak of the average NBO charges population of 3p orbital of Mg atoms in AlMgn clusters is in agreement with the stability of AlMgn (n=1—12) clusters.

With the aid of particle swarm optimization algorithm and density functional theory calculations, we have identified the geometric and electronic structures of 13-atom Mg n Li12-n Sc (n = 1-8) nanoclusters. The icosahedral structures are discovered as their respective global minima except Mg8Li4Sc, of which the cage structure is destroyed due to a magnesium atom outside the external metal cage. As the magnesium atoms increases, there is a sharp energy drop thereafter Mg5Li7Sc, and a large gain energy in Mg n Li12-n Sc (n = 3-5) is indicative of their especial stability. Molecular orbital analysis shows that the high stable clusters have the characteristics of magnetic superatoms. Then, the second stable magnetic cluster of Mg4Li8Sc is chosen as a possible building unit and the five-membered face-sharing motif is adopted. Mg4Li13Sc2 with the supermolecular properties are successfully constructed. Though the outer cage doped, this could to be a useful way to form the magnetic superatoms. Our findings further enrich building units that may aid in developing cluster-materials and tailoring their properties.
