Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Mental Health
Abstract:Qualitative research methods are based on the analysis of words rather than numbers; they encourage self-reflection on the investigator's part; they are attuned to social interaction and nuance; and they incorporate their subjects' thoughts and feelings as primary sources. Despite appearing well suited for research in child and adolescent psychiatry (CAP), qualitative methods have had relatively minor uptake in the discipline. We conducted a qualitative study of CAPs involved in qualitative research to learn about these investigators' lived experiences, and to identify modifiable factors to promote qualitative methods within the field of youth mental health.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
### The Problem the Paper Attempts to Address This paper aims to explore the application of qualitative research methods in the field of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (CAP) and to identify factors that facilitate or hinder researchers from entering the field of qualitative research. Specifically: 1. **Current Application of Qualitative Research in CAP**: - Although qualitative research methods are highly suitable for the CAP field, their actual application is relatively limited. - Analysis reveals that the number of qualitative studies is far fewer than quantitative studies, and their publication rate in professional journals is lower. 2. **Identification of Influencing Factors**: - The authors conducted semi-structured interviews with 23 CAP researchers from the United States and France to identify factors influencing their entry into the field of qualitative research. - These factors include personal traits, adaptability to uncertainty, interest in narratives, and conflicts with medical research identity. 3. **Proposed Solutions**: - Based on these modifiable factors, the authors propose specific strategies to enhance pathways into qualitative research and improve research quality. - Specific strategies include personalizing research focus, balancing internal and external perspectives, seeking epistemological flexibility, and going beyond bibliometrics. In summary, this paper aims to reveal the current state of qualitative research in the CAP field through empirical research and propose specific improvement measures to encourage more researchers to adopt qualitative research methods, thereby better understanding and representing the voices of patients.
