Abstract:Flexible inorganic electronic devices (FIEDs) consisting of functional inorganic components on a soft polymer substrate have enabled many novel applications such as epidermal electronics and wearable electronics, which cannot be realized through conventional rigid electronics. The low thermal dissipation capacity of the soft polymer substrate of FIEDs demands proper thermal management to reduce the undesired thermal influences. The biointegrated applications of FIEDs pose even more stringent requirements on thermal management due to the sensitive nature of biological tissues to temperature. In this review, we take microscale inorganic light-emitting diodes (mu-ILEDs) as an example of functional components to summarize the recent advances on thermal management of FIEDs including thermal analysis, thermo-mechanical analysis and thermal designs of FIEDs with and without biological tissues. These results are very helpful to understand the underlying heat transfer mechanism and provide design guidelines to optimize FIEDs in practical applications.

Abstract:With rapid development of wearable electronic technology, flexible thermoelectrics have become an important research topic in the field of wearable energy devices, owing to their sustainable power-supply ability, flexibility, and portability. However, the application of flexible thermoelectric devices in wearables is limited by their low stretchability, lack of breathability, and poor functional integration. Fiber-based stretchable thermoelectric devices with one-dimensional structure feature properties such as small size, lightweight, large deformation, and weavability, which make them suitable for integration into wearable fabrics. In addition, these devices can harvest thermal energy from human body. In this study, the materials, structures, and processing techniques developed for the fabrication of stretchable fiber thermoelectric devices are reviewed. Thereafter, their applications in self-powered sensing, energy harvesting, and thermoelectric cooling are discussed. Finally, a summary and an outlook are provided on the development of fiber thermoelectric devices wherein the key challenges of their practical applications are highlighted.

Abstract:With the growing demand for stretchable, wearable, and versatile thermal management electronics, exploring novel active electrical heating textiles is of significance for expansive practical applications. The electrical heating textiles enabled by the functional fibers with favorable comfort, washability, flexibility, and high conversion efficiency constitute clear advantages over traditional electrical heating devices. In this review, we summarize the recent research advances of wearable electrical heating textiles, including flexible substrate, conductive electrode, power supply and other basic components. The electrical heating materials are reasonably classified and comprehensively discussed, laying emphasis on the corresponding properties and emerging applications of functional fibers. Furthermore, the outlook and prospective of wearable electrical heating textiles are also demonstrated together with the remaining challenges in order to further promote the development of this field.

Abstract:Stretchable electronics, which offers the performance of conventional wafer-based devices and mechanical properties of a rubber band, enables many novel applications that are not possible through conventional electronics due to its brittle nature. One effective strategy to realize stretchable electronics is to design the inorganic semiconductor material in a stretchable format on a compliant elastomeric substrate. Engineering thermal management is essential for the development of stretchable electronics to avoid adverse thermal effects on its performance as well as in applications involving human body and biological tissues where even 1–2 °C temperature increase is not allowed. This article reviews the recent advances in thermal management of stretchable inorganic electronics with focuses on the thermal models and their comparisons to experiments and finite element simulations.

Abstract:Due to the flexibility and lightness, flexible thermoelectric (TE) technology shows great potential in the field of renewable energy and low-temperature waste heat collection. In recent years, a lot of efforts have been made to improve the efficiency of flexible TE technology, such as synthesizing high-performance flexible TE materials, improving the structure of flexible thermoelectric generators (TEGs), and optimizing the system integration design. This review comprehensively summarizes the flexible TE materials, device types, substrate selection, and fabrication techniques, aiming to reveal the latest research trend of flexible TE technology. The methods used to improve the physical properties of flexible TE materials and device design are discussed, including theoretical analysis, experimental verification, numerical simulation, and especially the potential and challenges of machine learning in flexible TE materials and devices. Besides, we summarized the applications of flexible TE technology in wearable devices, waste heat utilization of industrial heat pipes, medical sensors, Internet of Things, etc. Finally, the current research status of flexible TE technology and the prospect of the potential development of the flexible TE field are discussed.

Abstract:Wearable heaters that can retain conformal contact with human skin have attracted significant attention in recent years due to their enormous potential in thermotherapy. Existing strategies for wearable heaters are constrained by fixed configurations or dimensions, which limit their broad utilities in bio-integrated applications requiring heaters of various sizes. Here, we report a mechanics-guided design of wearable network heaters based on the lattice structure with the negative Poisson's ratio combined with the uniaxial stretch, which allows for the easy realization of heaters with different sizes and relatively uniform heating performance. Theoretical and computational mechanics studies reveal the fundamental aspects of the design and operation of the network heaters. Thermal analyses of the network heaters integrated with human skin are performed to investigate the influences of design parameters on the skin temperature. This study offers an easy route for wearable network heaters and provides design guidelines for their fabrications.

Abstract:Electrothermal materials have been widely used due to controllable heat energy in our life. With the development of wearable technology, a flexible, safe and waterproof heater with the good ability to endure repeated bending is required in future. In this paper, we have developed a novel wearable heater based on flexible, stretchable graphite nanoplates and polyurethane (GNP/PU) nanocomposite films. Firstly, the GNP/PU thin films with a thickness of 30-200 mu m were fabricated in mass production by the method of gap-coating, which can be bent 180 degrees repeatedly, or even knotted for their excellent flexibility, and has a maximum elongation up to 387.8%, due to the homogenous distribution of GNP in PU matrix. By the control on the amount of GNP and the thickness of the film, the minimum resistivity and square resistance of the GNP/PU films can be 80 m Omega.cm and 4 Omega/square, respectively. Through a further flexible structure designing and waterproof electronic packaging process, the fabricated wearable heaters are able to withstand 100,000 180-degrees bending with the resistance changes of only 3.24%, and have a IPX7 waterproof ability to work continuously for 120 min under 1.30 m water. Interestingly, as-prepared bare GNP/PU films have a good resistence to water and salt erosion, with the light 2.1%, 2.4% and 3.1% increasing in electrical resistance, and without obvious change in heating performance, even after the immersion in pure water, 0.5% and 5% salt water and dried completely. Furthermore, the wearable heaters can generate heat uniformly under the safe voltage of 5-24 V to achieve rapid heating and cooling rate of 25 degrees C/min and 13 degrees C/min, respectively. Lastly, a heating full-body vest mode of as-prepared wearable heaters was fabricated, which can work well with hand raising, bending and walking. The results showed that as-prepared wearable heaters were very suitable for wearable electronics, due to the excellent flexibility and stretchability of GNP/PU films and their special packaging structure, which provides a new choice for wearable heating products.

Abstract:<p>With the ever-growing development of multifunctional and miniature electronics, the exploring of high-power microwatt-milliwatt self-charging technology is highly essential. Flexible thermoelectric materials and devices, utilizing small temperature difference to generate electricity, exhibit great potentials to provide the continuous power supply for wearable and implantable electronics. In this review, we summarize the recent progress of flexible thermoelectric materials, including conducting polymers, organic/inorganic hybrid composites, and fully inorganic materials. The strategies and approaches for enhancing the thermoelectric properties of different flexible materials are detailed overviewed. Besides, we highlight the advanced strategies for the design of mechanical robust flexible thermoelectric devices. In the end, we point out the challenges and outlook for the future development of flexible thermoelectric materials and devices.</p>

Abstract:As the interface of matter and energy exchange between human body and surroundings, fabrics play an indispensable and important role in controlling the micro‐climate surrounding human skin. Smart fibers and textiles, with active and passive cooling/warming, heat dissipation, thermostatic, and self‐responsive functions which could provide adjustable smart personal temperature regulation ability, providing an efficient strategy for efficient personal thermal management. With the emergence and development of smart wearable electronics and healthcare systems, strong demands for energy saving and effective personal thermoregulation have attracted great attentions. In order to prevent thermal runaway and realize human thermal comfort during the long‐term wear of electronics that closely contact to skin, personal thermal management is emerging as an important strategy to regulate and balance the heat exchange between human body and surrounding environments. Smart fibers and textiles with light weight, mechanical flexibility, multiple responsive, as well as, excellent thermoregulation ability for efficient personal thermal management are eagerly desired in the healthcare applications of wearable electronics. This review summarizes the state‐of‐the‐art advancements on emerging smart fibers and textiles for personal thermal management, including personal cooling, warming, and thermostatic according to the specific healthcare application fields and individual requirements. Advanced fibers and textiles could provide adjustable smart personal thermal regulation ability, in response to various external stimuli and the changes of surrounding environments for efficient personal healthcare are focused on. Finally, the opportunities and challenges of smart fibers/textiles for personal thermal management are also discussed.

Abstract:With the unique ability to directly convert thermal energy to electricity or vice versa, the thermoelectric materials have exhibited great potential applications in waste heat recovery and environmentally friendly refrigeration.In contrast to the inorganic bulk thermoelectric materials, the flexible thermoelectric materials have the advantages of being bendable, small-size, light-weight and others, which makes them applicable in fabricating portable/wearable electronic device.In the recent decade, as one of the most challenging and promising functional materials, the conductive polymers, carbon materials and inorganic nanomaterials-based flexible thermoelectric materials and devices have attracted the attention of a great number of research groups around the world.This review describes systematically the recent achievements on flexible thermoelectric materials and devices based on different materials, and the problems that need to be solved urgently in the near future.The future major ongoing areas of effort have also been suggested.A large number of literatures have demonstrated that the thermoelectric performance of materials can be well-controlled through chemical synthesis and molecular design strategies, as well as morphology controlling and doping techniques.So far, research and development of the state-of-the-art flexible thermoelectric materials for practical applications still presents a considerable challenge.

Abstract:In this decade, the demands of energy saving and diverse personal thermoregulation requirements along with the emergence of wearable electronics and smart textiles give rise to the resurgence of personal thermal management (PTM) technologies. PTM, including personal cooling, heating, insulation, and thermoregulation, are far more flexible and extensive than the traditional air/liquid cooling garments for the human body. Concomitantly, many new advanced materials and strategies have emerged in this decade, promoting the thermoregulation performance and the wearing comfort of PTM simultaneously. In this review, an overview is presented of the state-of-the-art and the prospects in this burgeoning field. The emerging materials and strategies of PTM are introduced, and classed by their thermal functions. The concept of infrared-transparent visible-opaque fabric (ITVOF) is first highlighted, as it triggers the work on advanced PTM by combining it with radiative cooling, and the corresponding implementations and realizations are subsequently introduced, followed by wearable heaters, flexible thermoelectric devices, and sweat-management Janus textiles. Finally, critical considerations on the challenges and opportunities of PTM are presented and future directions are identified, including thermally conductive polymers and fibers, physiological/psychological statistical analysis, and smart PTM strategies.

Abstract:Conventional heaters have evolved from traditional rigid heaters to flexible heaters, stretchable heaters, and deformable heaters for the development of soft electronics. Film-based or filament-based heaters can be designed and engineered to fulfill the deformable, adaptable and stretchable applications. Compared with conventional heaters, deformable heaters can maintain stable electrothermal property even with large deformation. Based on this, deformable heaters have shown great potential to be used in the field of Internet of Things and work together with other electronic devices. This review summarizes the structure design strategies to achieve deformable heaters. Parameters, such as electrical conductivity, stretchability, thermal capacity, and thermal diffusivity, play essential roles in the effective design and development of heating devices. New methodologies and fabrication processes are developed to obtain deformable heaters that are expected to be highly conductive, adaptable, and conformable, as well as can be readily integrated with wearable fabrics. This review introduces the latest advances from conventional heaters to deformable heaters, emphasizing key recent developments on methodologies and fabrication processes and strategies geared toward applications in electronic skin, healthcare, deicing, sensors, and actuators. The challenges in this area are critically evaluated, and the perspectives for developing future deformable heaters are presented.

Printable Liquid‐Metal@PDMS Stretchable Heater with High Stretchability and Dynamic Stability for Wearable Thermotherapy

Abstract:As a type of flexible electronics, wearable heaters have attracted broad attention because of their giant potential market value, such as for use in wearable thermotherapy. Wearable heaters are required to simultaneously possess high stretchability and dynamic stability, in order to realize joints or muscles thermotherapy during exercising. Here, a high‐performance electrically driven heater using the conductive composite of liquid‐metal (LM) and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) is reported, which is patterned as sinusoidal structure by the printing technology of direct ink writing. Because high conductive LM is chosen as the active material, the LM@PDMS stretchable heater possesses high stretchability (>100% strain) and good conductivity (1.81 × 103 S cm−1). It also exhibits superb dynamic stability, due to the 3D conductive network of LM in matrix and the sinusoidal structure of the composite. While being stretched to the strain level of 100%, the heating temperature variation of LM@PDMS stretchable heater is less than 8%. This relatively low temperature variation is several times smaller than that of existing heaters at the same large strain levels. It is demonstrated that the LM@PDMS stretchable heater worn on the knee joint works well during strenuous exercise, thus proving great potential in wearable thermotherapy.

Abstract:Wearable flexible temperature sensors, as a new type of sensor technology, have the ability to monitor the surface temperature of human skin in real-time. Compared with traditional temperature sensors, wearable and flexible temperature sensors have the advantages of comfort, wearability, and strong adaptability, which can provide new solutions for medical monitoring, health monitoring, and sports training. The basic principle is based on the thermoelectric effect or thermistor effect. Specifically, temperature sensors convert thermal energy into electrical signals by measuring the temperature changes of an object. Based on the magnitude of electrical signals caused by temperature changes, the temperature of an object can be inferred. Using flexible materials as the substrate for sensors, temperature measurement is achieved by measuring the material's resistance, capacitance, or thermal conductivity. The preparation methods mainly include the selection of flexible materials, the preparation of sensing elements, and the integration of sensors. Common flexible materials include polymers, nanomaterials, and conductive fibers. This article reviews the research progress of wearable temperature sensors in recent years, including wearable optical temperature sensors, wearable temperature sensors for clinical detection, integrated wireless sensors, multi-mode force and temperature tactile sensors based on high sensitivity short channels, and other advanced temperature sensors. Finally, the challenges and future development directions of flexible wearable temperature sensors were proposed. Sensors, as one of the most important core components, will affect the functional design and future development direction of wearable devices. That's why it has been highly anticipated in recent years.

Abstract:This is a comprehensive overview of smart Joule‐heated fabrics. This review focuses on the conductive materials currently used for smart Joule heating, the strategies for the preparation of smart Joule heating fabrics, and the latest applications of smart Joule heating fabrics in the areas of personal thermal management, health therapy, visual indication, drug release, and soft actuators. Multifunctional wearable heaters have attracted much attention for their effective applications in personal thermal management and medical therapy. Compared to passive heating, Joule heating offers significant advantages in terms of reusability, reliable temperature control, and versatile coupling. Joule‐heated fabrics make wearable electronics smarter. This review critically discusses recent advances in Joule‐heated smart fabrics, focusing on various fabrication strategies based on material‐structure synergy. Specifically, various applicable conductive materials with Joule heating effect are first summarized. Subsequently, different preparation methods for Joule heating fabrics are compared, and then their various applications in smart clothing, healthcare, and visual indication are discussed. Finally, the challenges faced in developing these smart Joule heating fabrics and their possible solutions are discussed.

Abstract:<p>Flexible thermoelectric (TE) generator (f-TEG) assembled with flexible TE films (f-TEFs), which can continuously output power by harvesting the heat energy (body heat and sunlight, etc.), is a very promising candidate to power wearable electronics and sensors. So, f-TEFs have attracted increasing attention in the last decade and made dramatic breakthrough in the last two years. In this paper, f-TEFs, which can be divided into two categories of free-standing flexible films and flexible substrate supported films, prepared by various methods, are reviewed. Strategies for improving the performance of the f-TEFs are proposed. Recent breakthroughs in f-TEFs and how these films are assembled into device designs taking advantages of their mechanical flexibility and TE properties are presented. In addition, the problems in studying f-TEFs and f-TEGs and the possible challenges are also summarized and detailed design guidelines regarding the TE properties and flexibility of the f-TEFs are provided.</p>
