Abstract:AbstractGlobal warming and increased living standards have rapidly increased the demand for cooling systems. Meeting this demand in less economically developed areas is highly challenging due to a lack of electricity. In this paper, we have demonstrated a high‐performance and wide relative humidity (RH) solar‐driven evaporative cooling strategy that uses only atmospheric water. Developed here for the first time, we designed a metal–organic framework (MOF‐801) based composite with a high‐performance atmospheric water absorption across a wide range of RH. The as‐synthesized composite can adsorb atmospheric water up to ~22% (~80%) of its weight at an RH@28% (~70%). Our demonstration has shown that the corresponding cooling powers range from 136 to 344 W/m2 in a wide range of RH and solar intensities, and the passive cooling temperature is up to 14°C lower than the device's reference counterpart. Our study thus proposes a solar‐driven cooling coating with high cooling powers across a wide range of RH based on an as‐synthesized composite, which pinpoints a pathway to replace traditional compression‐based cooling systems (e.g., air conditioners) and which will also have a significant impact in future global energy consumption.

Abstract:We present a comprehensive photonic approach for passive cooling of solar cells by simultaneously performing radiative cooling while also selectively utilizing the sunlight. We design a photonic cooler made of multilayer dielectric stack that can strongly radiate heat through its thermal radiation while also significantly reflecting the solar spectrum in sub-band gap and ultraviolet regime. We show that applying this photonic cooler on solar panel can cool the solar cell by over 5.6K in a typical terrestrial operating condition. Our technique points to an optimal photonic approach for passive cooling of solar cells and can be readily implemented as a retrofit for current photovoltaic modules to improve both efficiency and reliability.
Hybrid Thermochemical Sorption Seasonal Storage for Ultra-Low Temperature Solar Energy Utilization

Abstract:The effective upgrading and utilization of low or ultra-low temperature heat (below 50 degrees C) could meet a significant fraction of space and water heating loads. To fulfill this goal, hybrid sorption thermal energy storage (TES) to recover ultra-low grade solar heat below 50 degrees C is investigated, aiming to address the issue of winter heating in severe cold regions. A water-based solar photovoltaic-thermal (PVT) system is integrated to provide heat and electricity for a sorption TES system. Composite ammonium chloride is used for thermodynamic prediction in terms of weather conditions in different places. It is demonstrated that when water temperatures increase from 31.4 degrees C to 51.2 degrees C, energy efficiencies of hybrid sorption TES system under theoretical and selected working conditions in Hangzhou increase from 0.52 to 0.57 and from 0.33 to 0.38, respectively. The overall exergy efficiencies of hybrid TES with the PVT system under theoretical and selected working conditions increase from 0.059 to 0.062 and from 0.046 to 0.057, respectively. The overall exergy efficiency of the hybrid system in Helsinki is 0.55, which is 4.3% higher than those in Hangzhou. One remarkable fact is that hybrid sorption TES integrated with the PVT system is quite promising especially for severe cold regions. (C) 2021 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:In this work, a new solar cooling system that is powered by a concentrated photovoltaic thermal module is presented. Given the intermittent nature of solar energy, the essence of this system lies in its capability to offer continuous cooling. Furthermore, the proposed cooling system is versatile in operation, with three alternative modes available depending on the user's demands. Two operating scenarios of the system are presented. In the first scenario, thermal energy is utilized for cooling during the daytime, while electric energy is stored as compressed air for nighttime use. In the second scenario, both thermal and electric energies are employed for cooling during periods of high demand. The system is studied under different evaporator temperatures, various ambient temperatures, and different solar intensities. The results show that at an evaporation temperature of 4 °C, the system can provide continuous cooling, generating up to 10.24 kW of cooling power during the daytime and up to 7.66 kW during the nighttime, with an overall coefficient of performance of 0.612.

Abstract:Solar energy is the most sustainable and free source to manage the world energy demand. One aspect of solar-driven energy supply can be observed in cooling systems. Recently, solar energy-based cooling systems have received many attentions. Solar cooling systems utilizing solar collectors, as the renewable and sustainable-based solution, have the good potentials to overcome the challenges associated with consumption of fossil fuels. In this study, the recent advances about the potentials of dish collectors and linear Fresnel reflectors for the usage in the cooling systems are reviewed. In addition, the solar-powered conventional absorption chiller and cryogenic systems are investigated. Hybrid cooling solar systems and solar-based combined cooling, heating, and power systems are also studied. The hydrogen production in cooling integrated systems and cold thermal energy storage are discussed. In each section, in addition to general description of the system, some explanations about the thermodynamic and economic aspects of the systems are provided. Finally, the main results of the review are summarized and based on the available gaps between the literatures, some suggestions are provided for the future studies. It was found that using solar dish collectors in a hybrid system, designed for the freshwater and LNG production, causes carbon dioxide emissions reduction by 40%, and also increases freshwater and LNG production by 95% and 4.7%, respectively. In the hybrid trigeneration solar-biomass power plants, using the linear Fresnel reflector leads to 29% save in biomass and land.

Abstract:In rural regions, freshly harvested fruits and vegetables cannot be precooled in time, resulting in enormous economic losses. In this paper, a novel solar-driven compression-assisted desorption chemisorption refrigeration/cold energy storage system for refrigerated warehouses is proposed. Compression-assisted desorption allows flexible adjustment of the desorption temperature of composite sorbent to actively adapt to the instable solar hot water temperature. The desorption reaction can increase compressor suction pressure, which helps to reduce power consumption and improve the coefficient of performance (COP). The chemisorption energy storage module completes its regeneration by day and releases cold energy to refrigerated warehouse at night. This module can change the refrigerating temperature depending on the type of fruits and vegetables, superior to the phase change cold storage technology. Therefore, the system can effectively overcome the problems caused by the instability and intermittency of solar energy. According to the performance test results of the reactor, the COP is 5.5 at a hot water temperature of 90 °C, an evaporating temperature of −10 °C and a condensing temperature of 40 °C, which is higher than the 2.6 of the R404A vapor-compression system. Additionally, its refrigerating capacity can be changed by adjusting the number of reactors operating inside the sorption bed, ranging from 1.52 kW to 5.21 kW. Analysis results indicate that the system can efficiently and consistently meet the precooling needs of freshly harvested fruits and vegetables during the picking season. The payback period is less than one year, considering the economic benefits it brings. Ultimately, the novel system is suitable for refrigerated warehouses in sunny rural regions.

A compact modular microchannel membrane-based absorption thermal energy storage system for highly efficient solar cooling

Abstract:This study applies the microchannel membrane-based module to develop a novel modular and compact thermal energy storage system to meet building requirements with solar or waste thermal energy in a low-carbon path. Compared to traditional systems, the novel system demonstrates significant improvements, with the charging and discharging rates increased by 2 and 3 times. The energy storage efficiency is enhanced from 0.470 to 0.772, while energy storage density based on fluid and setup volume are increased by 78.62% and 120.90% respectively. The charging/discharging rate and solution concentration glide increase continuously as the heat source temperature rises from 75 °C to 100 °C, leading to continuous increases in energy storage density and efficiency. As increasing channel length, width, number, and module number, or decreasing channel height improves the charging/discharging rate. Energy storage density can be enhanced by augmenting the channel height and width, increasing the quantity of both channels and modules, or diminishing the channel length. Conversely, smaller channel dimensions and larger channel heights are advantageous for higher efficiency. The scaling up combined with customizability, and popularization of the proposed compact modular microchannel membrane-based absorption thermal energy storage system would be required for mass uptake of this innovative solution in building cooling applications.

Abstract:Despite global urbanization, a significant part of the world's population lacks access to the electrical grid. Photovoltaic (PV) cells offer off-grid electricity but face efficiency challenges and shortened lifespans due to prolonged exposure to high temperatures. While PV cells traditionally generate electricity only during daylight, our innovative system integrates radiative cooling (RC), thermoelectric generators (TE), and phase change materials (PCM). In comprehensive tests, our system effectively lowered the PV module temperature by 15 °C during daylight at 800 W/m 2 irradiance. Under a clear night sky, it achieved a remarkable 20 % improvement in power generation (120 mV) compared to previous studies. This advancement positions our system as a continuous power source for sustained electricity generation in off-grid settings, contributing to temperature moderation and extending Photovoltaic module lifespan without compromising efficiency. To optimize performance, we used COMSOL software, analyzing factors like wind speed, ambient temperature, irradiation intensity, and the photovoltaic cell to thermoelectric generator area ratio. Insights from this analysis form the basis for future enhancements and upgrades.

Abstract:The solar absorption-subcooled compression hybrid cooling system is an economically viable energy-saving solution for cold storage refrigeration system. However, the thermodynamic and economic performance of this system has not been assessed specifically for cold storage. Additionally, the system performance strongly depends on the appropriate design of critical parameters, which has not been previously analyzed either. Therefore, a technical and financial evaluation of the solar absorption-subcooled compression hybrid cooling system for cold storage is implemented systematically in this study based on the simulation of the typical days. The effects of the absorption subsystem size and storage tank volume are analyzed. Furthermore, global optimization is performed using the genetic algorithm. It is determined the optimal design is as follows an absorption subsystem size of 0.04–0.06 kW/m2 with a storage tank volume of 40–60 L/m2 for the case in which the collector area (2000 m2) is half the available area. The peak annual electric energy savings is 68.8 kWh/m2. The solar absorption-subcooled compression hybrid cooling system is economically viable for cold storage without any subsidy and the minimum payback period is 4.96 y. This study can be beneficial for the effective and feasible reduction of the energy consumption of cold storage refrigeration systems.

Abstract:This manuscript presents an innovative simulation study focusing on a solar-powered refrigeration system featuring a mechanical porous sub-cooler. The research evaluates the system's performance by employing diverse porous materials within the sub-cooler, aiming to address the pressing need for sustainable cooling solutions and decreasing dependence on conventional energy sources. The novelty of this study lies in its pioneering approach to bridging a significant void in the current body of the literature. By offering a comprehensive numerical simulation, this research seamlessly integrates three crucial aspects: solar energy utilization, porous media dynamics, and the utilization of diverse refrigerants. The system under scrutiny comprises a 4-ton sub-critical refrigeration unit, incorporating essential components such as a compressor, condenser, porous sub-cooler, expansion valve, and evaporator, with R454B serving as the designated refrigerant. Uniquely, it integrates a solar-powered mechanical porous sub-cooling sub-cycle employing the refrigerant R454C, solved utilizing Engineering Equation Solver (EES) while considering Jordan's climate conditions. The investigation encompasses a range of condensing temperatures from 25 to 40 °C, evaporation temperatures spanning from − 5 to 10 °C, and condensing pressures ranging from 25 to 45 Kpa. The study meticulously analyzes the coefficient of performance and power consumption, considering factors such as sub-cooler porosity, condensing pressure, evaporation temperature, compressor efficiency, and ambient temperature. Remarkably, the results highlight that reducing porosity and condensing pressure significantly enhance the coefficient of performance by approximately 84% and reduce power consumption by 30.2%. Furthermore, enhancements in base-cycle compressor efficiency and decreased sub-cooler porosity also positively impact the coefficients of performance. Particularly noteworthy is the finding that increasing compressor efficiency and decreasing porosity lead to a remarkable 182% increase in the coefficient of performance. This study underscores the critical significance of sub-cooler porosity, compressor efficiency, and condensing pressure for achieving optimal system performance. Moreover, the innovative design of the solar panel system ensures sufficient power generation for continuous operation, thereby conserving utility power during peak solar generation periods. Leveraging the solar-powered mechanical sub-cooling system not only enhances the overall coefficient of performance but also diminishes reliance on utility power, thus contributing to sustainability efforts in refrigeration technology. The model's credibility is affirmed through validation against existing experimental data, further consolidating the reliability and relevance of the study's findings.

A smart thermal-gated bilayer membrane for temperature-adaptive radiative cooling and solar heating

Abstract:Due to the huge energy consumption of traditional cooling- and heating-based electricity, passive radiative cooling and solar heating with a minimum carbon footprint using the outer space and Sun as natural thermodynamic resources have attracted much attention. However, most passive devices are static and monofunctional, and cannot meet the practical requirements of dynamic cooling and heating under various conditions. Here, we demonstrate a smart thermal-gated (STG) bilayer membrane that enables fully automatic and temperature-adaptive radiative cooling and solar heating. Specifically, this device can switch from reflective to absorptive (white to black) in the solar wavelength with the reduction in optical scattering upon ambient temperature, corresponding to a sunlight reflectivity change from 0.962 to 0.059 when the temperature drops below ∼30 °C, whereas its mid-infrared emissivity remains at ∼0.95. Consequently, this STG membrane achieves a temperature of ∼5 °C below ambient (a key signature of radiative cooling) under direct sunlight (peak solar irradiance >900 W m-2) in summer and a solar heating power of ∼550 W m-2 in winter. Theoretical analysis reveals the substantial advantage of this switchable cooling/heating device in potential energy saving compared with cooling-only and heating-only strategies when widely used in different climates. It is expected that this work will pave a new pathway for designing temperature-adaptive devices with zero energy consumption and provide an innovative way to achieve sustainable energy.
A mechanical-optical coupling design on solar and thermal radiation modulation for thermoregulation

Abstract:Passive daytime radiative cooling (PDRC) and selective solar absorption (SSA) represent sustainable alternatives to conventional air conditioning, offering energy-efficient thermal management. PDRC promotes sub-ambient cooling, whereas SSA supports heating, both operating at minimal energy costs. Traditional static PDRC and SSA systems, however, often fail to deal with dynamic and unpredictable environmental temperature fluctuations, leading to overcooling or overheating. In this work, we introduce a novel approach to address these challenges by utilizing a mechanical-optical coupling mechanism for synchronous solar and thermal radiation modulation. This system features a multi-layer structure inspired by the dynamic skin of a squid, composed of a thickness-sensitive Styrene Ethylene Butylene Styrene thermal emitter, an Al2O3 bonding layer, an Ag reflector layer, and an Al2O3 protective layer. As a result, we successfully achieved a maximum solar modulation of 0.72 (solar reflectance from 0.97 to 0.25) and a thermal modulation of 0.3 (thermal transmittance from 0.07 to 0.37). This innovative modulation enables our film to adjust temperature by up to 9.3 °C during the day and 2.9 °C at night. Our design significantly reduces annual energy consumption by 20.4% to 56.7%, illustrating a viable and scalable solution for dynamic thermal management suitable for diverse outdoor environments.

Abstract:Global climate change requires a significant reduction of greenhouse gas emission through developing sustainable energy technologies such as photovoltaic (PV) devices. However, the inherently variable nature of solar irradiance and consequent electricity generation increase challenges for the system stability of electrical grids. Moreover, the PV devices face significant performance loss under full irradiance conditions with 55–65 °C operating temperature. Herein, we demonstrate a novel solar energy conversion and storage (SECS) system by integrating a perovskite PV device with a low-cost membrane-free Zn/Mn-based redox flow battery (RFB) which has a quite negative temperature coefficient. The proof-of-concept SECS system shows great potential for future large-scale deployment of sustainable energy by three concurrent processes: (1) Liquid electrolyte of RFB provides an effective cooling process for the PV device, mitigating its performance loss at high temperature. (2) Thermally regenerative electrochemical cycle (TREC) allows RFB to generate additional electricity from the low-grade heat gathered from the solar cell at a high absolute thermoelectric efficiency, which adds to the overall system efficiency. (3) RFB timely stores the electricity produced by the solar cell, buffering the fluctuation of solar power, stabilizing the electrical grids, and reducing the energy curtailment.

Abstract:Radiative cooling is a passive cooling strategy with zero consumption of electricity. Although this technology can work well during optimal atmospheric conditions at nighttime, it is essential to achieve efficient radiative cooling during daytime when peak cooling demand actually occurs. In this article, we report an inexpensive planar polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)/metal thermal emitter, i.e., a thin film structure fabricated using fast solution coating process that is scalable for large area manufacturing. By manipulating the beaming effect of the thermal radiation, temperature reduction of 9.5 °C and 11.0 °C were demonstrated in the laboratory and out-door environment, respectively. In addition, a spectral-selective solar shelter architecture was designed and implemented to suppress the solar input during the daytime. Due to the enhanced directionality of the thermal emission, the dependence of the radiative cooling performance on the surrounding environment was minimized. Out-door experiments were performed in Buffalo NY, realizing continuous all-day radiative cooling with an average power of ~120 W/m2 on a typical clear sunny day at Northern United States latitudes. This practical passive cooling strategy that cools without any electricity input could have a significant impact on global energy consumption.

Abstract:Solar energy, with its sustainable properties, has garnered considerable attention for its potential to produce green electricity and clean water. This paper proposes a multistage energy transfer co-generation system (MWCNTs-covered thermoelectric module with aerogel and cooler, AC-CTEM) combining power generation and evaporative cooling. On the light-absorbing surface, the hot side of a thermoelectric module is covered with a hydrophobic coating made of PDMS and MWCNT. The cold side transfers heat to the evaporation zone using a heat sink. Aerogel evaporators are cross-linked with chitosan and polyurethane, which reduces the enthalpy of evaporation and facilitates efficient interfacial evaporation to remove heat and return it to refrigeration. Additionally, with the addition of Fresnel lenses and wind energy to the enhancement device, the system achieved an evaporation rate of 3.445 kg m-2 h-1 and an open-circuit voltage of 201.12 mV under 1 kW m-2 solar irradiation. The AC-CTEM system also demonstrated long-term stability and effectiveness in treating various types of non-potable water. Furthermore, we demonstrated the practical utility of the system by successfully cultivating grass seeds and powering electronic equipment. The AC-CTEM system exemplifies a practical energy-saving approach for the development of highly efficient co-generation systems.

Abstract:Heating and cooling, as the basic requirements of human life, account for more than 28% of global energy consumption. To minimize carbon footprint and save energy, various strategies based on passive heating and cooling have attracted much attention. Typically, as the sun and outer space are the natural thermodynamic resources for renewable energy harvesting, passive solar heating and radiative cooling have been widely explored through a precise spectral design to effectively exploit solar energy and thermal radiation. In this Perspective, based on the previous works and principal development of passive solar heating and radiative cooling, the corresponding ideal spectral design under different temperature conditions is proposed and highlighted. As demonstrations, we present several examples of different optical spectral designs for realizing passive solar heating and radiative cooling to fit various scenarios. Finally, possible solutions to the current problems and the directions for future development are discussed.

Abstract:The utilization of solar energy is attracting rapidly increasing researches due to its many advantages, and an important application is to satisfy the refrigeration demand of residents with the solar-assisted absorption chillers. However, the simple solar-assisted refrigeration system cannot always meet the cooling demand of residents due to the mismatch between solar power and the refrigeration load. Therefore, the thermal energy storage device is introduced into the solar-assisted system to increase the stability of the refrigeration system and reduce the waste of solar energy. In this contribution, a solar-assisted absorption chiller system together with the TES device is presented and optimized to minimize the operation cost of the system. The system is modeled using the newly proposed heat current method and its global constraints are constructed, which largely reduces the number of the constraints comparing to the traditional equation-oriented approach. Optimization results present that the optimized design of the system reduces the total operation cost effectively.

Abstract:In most of the developed nation, the increase in percentage share of renewable power in the total power generation causes major concerns over the integration of these renewable power with the grid resulting grid instability. Energy storage is a new frontier technology which is considered as the ultimate solution in developing smart micro grid with distributed renewable energy (RE) generation. Most of the hot countries like India spend nearly 24% of the electricity generated on air conditioning and food preservation. Under such scenario, among the various types of storage systems, the cool thermal storage plays a vital role to promote renewable power in an economical way. Considering the importance in the present increasing RE scenario, in the present work, an experimental investigation was performed on a cool water storage integrated with a chiller system driven by solar PV unit which has major advantages in central air conditioning system for demand management strategies and to solve the Grid instability. The results revealed that with the installation of 100 W chiller operated by a 200 Wp solar PV panel it is possible to generate 25 liters of cool brine at – 6C from 35C along with the storage of 0.405 kWh and 0.1 kWh of electrical energy in the battery respectively during the months of May and September. In the month of January the temperature was brought down only to a temperature of 1.3C along with 0.234 kWh of energy stored in the battery. These results will be very useful for the design and development renewable based micro grid for cooling and other applications which are electrically driven in various building sectors.
