Abstract:Edge ideals of finite simple graphs are well-studied over polynomial rings. In this paper, we initiate the study of edge ideals over exterior algebras, specifically focusing on the depth and singular varieties of such ideals. We prove an upper bound on the depth of the edge ideal associated to a general graph and a more refined bound for bipartite graphs, and we show that both are tight. We also compute the depth of several large families of graphs including cycles, complete multipartite graphs, spider graphs, and Ferrers graphs. Finally, we focus on the effect whiskering a graph has on the depth of the associated edge ideal.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a graph and $I=I(G)$ be its edge ideal. When $G$ is the clique sum of two different length odd cycles joined at single vertex then we give an explicit description of the symbolic powers of $I$ and compute the Waldschmidt constant. When $G$ is complete graph then we describe the generators of the symbolic powers of $I$ and compute the Waldschmidt constant and the resurgence of $I$. Moreover for complete graph we prove that the Castelnuvo-Mumford regularity of the symbolic powers and ordinary powers of the edge ideal coincide.

Abstract:Let $J_G$ be the binomial edge ideal of a graph $G$. We characterize all graphs whose binomial edge ideals, as well as their initial ideals, have regularity $3$. Consequently we characterize all graphs $G$ such that $J_G$ is extremal Gorenstein. Indeed, these characterizations are consequences of an explicit formula we obtain for the regularity of the binomial edge ideal of the join product of two graphs. Finally, by using our regularity formula, we discuss some open problems in the literature. In particular we disprove a conjecture in \cite{CDI} on the regularity of weakly closed graphs.

Abstract:A fruitful contemporary paradigm in graph theory is that almost all graphs that do not contain a certain subgraph have common structural characteristics. The "almost" is crucial, without it there is no structure. In this paper we transfer this paradigm to commutative algebra and make use of deep graph theoretic results. A key tool are the critical graphs introduced by Balogh and Butterfield. We consider edge ideals $I_G$ of graphs and their Betti numbers. The numbers of the form $\beta_{i,2i+2}$ constitute the "main diagonal" of the Betti table. It is well known that any Betti number $\beta_{i,j}(I_G)$ below (or equivalently, to the left of) this diagonal is always zero. We identify a certain "parabola" inside the Betti table and call parabolic Betti numbers the entries of the Betti table bounded on the left by the main diagonal and on the right by this parabola. Let $\beta_{i,j}$ be a parabolic Betti number on the $r$-th row of the Betti table, for $r\ge3$. Our main results state that almost all graphs $G$ with $\beta_{i,j}(I_G)=0$ can be partitioned into $r-2$ cliques and one independent set, and in particular for almost all graphs $G$ with $\beta_{i,j}(I_G)=0$ the regularity of $I_G$ is $r-1$.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the degree of $h$-polynomials of edge ideals of finite simple graphs. In particular, we provide combinatorial formulas for the degree of the $h$-polynomial for various fundamental classes of graphs such as paths, cycles, and bipartite graphs. To the best of our knowledge, this marks the first investigation into the combinatorial interpretation of this algebraic invariant. Additionally, we characterize all connected graphs in which the sum of the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity and the degree of the $h$-polynomial of an edge ideal reaches its maximum value, which is the number of vertices in the graph.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a simple connected non-complete graph and $J_G$ be its binomial edge ideal in a polynomial ring $S$. Using certain invariants associated to graphs, say $U(G)$, Banerjee and Núñez-Betancourt gave an upper bound for the depth of $S/J_G$, and Rouzbahani Malayeri, Saeedi Madani and Kiani obtained a lower bound, say $L(G)$. Hibi and Saeedi Madani gave a structural classification of graphs satisfying $L(G)=U(G)$. In this article, we give structural classification of graphs satisfying $L(G)+1=U(G)$. We also compute the depth of $S/J_G$ for all such graphs $G$.

Abstract:In this paper we introduce the concept of clique disjoint edge sets in graphs. Then, for a graph $G$, we define the invariant $\eta(G)$ as the maximum size of a clique disjoint edge set in $G$. We show that the regularity of the binomial edge ideal of $G$ is bounded above by $\eta(G)$. This, in particular, settles a conjecture on the regularity of binomial edge ideals in full generality.

Abstract:In this article, we study algebraic properties of binomial edge ideals of Levi graphs associated with certain plane curve arrangements. Using combinatorial properties of Levi graphs, we discuss the Cohen-Macaulayness of binomial edge ideals of Levi graphs associated to some curve arrangements in the complex projective plane, like the $d$-arrangement of curves and the conic-line arrangements. We also discuss the existence of certain induced cycles in the Levi graphs of these arrangements and obtain lower bounds for the regularity of powers of the corresponding binomial edge ideals.

Three invariants of geometrically vertex decomposable ideals

Abstract:We study three invariants of geometrically vertex decomposable ideals: the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity, the multiplicity, and the $a$-invariant. We show that these invariants can be computed recursively using the ideals that appear in the geometric vertex decomposition process. As an application, we prove that the $a$-invariant of a geometrically vertex decomposable ideal is non-positive. We also recover some previously known results in the literature including a formula for the regularity of the Stanley--Reisner ideal of a pure vertex decomposable simplicial complex, and proofs that some well-known families of ideals are Hilbertian. Finally, we apply our recursions to the study of toric ideals of bipartite graphs. Included among our results on this topic is a new proof for a known bound on the $a$-invariant of a toric ideal of a bipartite graph.

Abstract:Conca and Varbaro (Invent. Math. 221 (2020), no. 3) showed the equality of depth of a graded ideal and its initial ideal in a polynomial ring when the initial ideal is square-free. In this paper, we give some beautiful applications of this fact in the study of Cohen-Macaulay binomial edge ideals. We prove that for the characterization of Cohen-Macaulay binomial edge ideals, it is enough to consider only "biconnected graphs with some whisker attached" and this done by investigating the initial ideals. We give several necessary conditions for a binomial edge ideal to be Cohen-Macaulay in terms of smaller graphs. Also, under a hypothesis, we give a sufficient condition for Cohen-Macaulayness of binomial edge ideals in terms of blocks of graphs. Moreover, we show that a graph with Cohen-Macaulay binomial edge ideal has girth less than $5$ or equal to infinity.

Abstract: Inspired by the recent work of Lu and O'Rourke, we study the $a_i$-invariants of (symbolic) powers of some graded ideals. The first scenario is when $I$ and $J$ are two graded ideals in two distinct polynomial rings $R$ and $S$ over a common field $\mathbb{K}$. We study the $a_i$-invariants of the powers of the fiber product via the corresponding knowledge of $I$ and $J$. The second scenario is when $I_{\Delta}$ is the Stanley-Reisner ideal of a $k$-dimensional simplicial complex $\Delta$ with $k\ge 2$. We investigate the $a_i$-invariants of the symbolic powers of $I_{\Delta}$.
Normally torsion-free edge ideals of weighted oriented graphs

Abstract:Let $I=I(D)$ be the edge ideal of a weighted oriented graph $D$, let $G$ be the underlying graph of $D$, and let $I^{(n)}$ be the $n$-th symbolic power of $I$ defined using the minimal primes of $I$. We prove that $I^2=I^{(2)}$ if and only if (i) every vertex of $D$ with weight greater than $1$ is a sink and (ii) $G$ has no triangles. As a consequence, using a result of Mandal and Pradhan, and the classification of normally torsion-free edge ideals of graphs, it follows that $I^n=I^{(n)}$ for all $n\geq 1$ if and only if (a) every vertex of $D$ with weight greater than $1$ is a sink and (b) $G$ is bipartite. If $I$ has no embedded primes, conditions (a) and (b) classify when $I$ is normally torsion-free. Using polyhedral geometry and integral closure, we give necessary conditions for the equality of ordinary and symbolic powers of monomial ideals with a minimal irreducible decomposition. Then, we classify when the Alexander dual of the edge ideal of a weighted oriented graph is normally torsion-free.

Abstract:Let be a polynomial ring over a filed . The edge ideal of a graph G is the monomial ideal, denoted by , whose generators correspond to the edges in G . The quotient ring is called the edge ring of G . In this paper, we study the minimal graded free resolution of edge ring of a k -partite n -crown graph . We give a combinatorial formula for the graded Betti numbers in the linear strand of . We also determine the Hilbert series of the edge ring both in terms of i -faces of its independence complex and the graded Betti numbers of its edge ring. We then compare these Hilbert Series and derive a combinatorial formula for other graded Betti numbers of . As a consequence, we also determine the extremal graded Betti number of the edge ring of a partite crown graph . Moreover, we determine the projective dimension and the Castelnuovo–Mumford regularity of the edge rings of these graphs.

Regularity of two classes of Cohen-Macaulay binomial edge ideals

Abstract:Some recent investigations indicate that for the classification of Cohen-Macaulay binomial edge ideals, it suffices to consider biconnected graphs with some whiskers attached (in short, `block with whiskers'). This paper provides explicit combinatorial formulae for the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of two specific classes of Cohen-Macaulay binomial edge ideals: (i) chain of cycles with whiskers and (ii) $r$-regular $r$-connected block with whiskers. For the first type, we introduce a new invariant of graphs in terms of the number of blocks in certain induced block graphs, and this invariant may help determine the regularity of other classes of binomial edge ideals. For the second type, we present the formula as a linear function of $r$.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a complex classical group, and let $V$ be its defining representation (possibly plus a copy of the dual). A foundational problem in classical invariant theory is to write down generators and relations for the ring of $G$-invariant polynomial functions on the space $\mathcal{P}^m(V)$ of degree-$m$ homogeneous polynomial functions on $V$. In this paper, we replace $\mathcal{P}^m(V)$ with the full polynomial algebra $\mathcal{P}(V)$. As a result, the invariant ring is no longer finitely generated. Hence instead of seeking generators, we aim to write down linear bases for bigraded components. Indeed, when $G$ is of sufficiently high rank, we realize these bases as sets of graphs with prescribed number of vertices and edges. When the rank of $G$ is small, there arise complicated linear dependencies among the graphs, but we remedy this setback via representation theory: in particular, we determine the dimension of an arbitrary component in terms of branching multiplicities from the general linear group to the symmetric group. We thereby obtain an expression for the bigraded Hilbert series of the ring of invariants on $\mathcal{P}(V)$. We conclude with examples using our graphical notation, several of which recover classical results.

Abstract:A symmetric ideal is an ideal in a polynomial ring which is stable under all permutations of the variables. In this paper we initiate a global study of zero-dimensional symmetric ideals. By this we mean a geometric study of the invariant Hilbert schemes $\mathrm{Hilb}_{\rho}^{S_n}(\mathbb{C}^n)$ parametrizing symmetric subschemes of $\mathbb{C}^n$ whose coordinate rings, as $S_n$-modules, are isomorphic to a given representation $\rho$. In the case that $\rho = M^\lambda$ is a permutation module corresponding to certain special types of partitions $\lambda$ of $n$, we prove that $\mathrm{Hilb}_{\rho}^{S_n}(\mathbb{C}^n)$ is irreducible or even smooth. We also prove irreducibility whenever $\dim \rho \leq 2n$ and the invariant Hilbert scheme is non-empty. In this same range, we classify all homogeneous symmetric ideals and decide which of these define singular points of $\mathrm{Hilb}_{\rho}^{S_n}(\mathbb{C}^n)$. A central tool is the combinatorial theory of higher Specht polynomials.
