Abstract:This research focuses on analyzing the depth of generalized binomial edge ideals. We extend the notion of $d$-compatible map for the pairs of a complete graph and an arbitrary graph, and using it, we give a combinatorial lower bound for the depth of generalized binomial edge ideals. Subsequently, we determine an upper bound for the depth of generalized binomial edge ideals in terms of the vertex-connectivity of graphs. We demonstrate that the difference between the upper and lower bounds can be arbitrarily large, even in cases when one of the bounds is sharp. In addition, we calculate the depth of generalized binomial edge ideals of certain classes of graphs, including cyclic graphs and graphs with Cohen-Macaulay binomial edge ideals.

Abstract:Let $J_G$ be the binomial edge ideal of a graph $G$. We characterize all graphs whose binomial edge ideals, as well as their initial ideals, have regularity $3$. Consequently we characterize all graphs $G$ such that $J_G$ is extremal Gorenstein. Indeed, these characterizations are consequences of an explicit formula we obtain for the regularity of the binomial edge ideal of the join product of two graphs. Finally, by using our regularity formula, we discuss some open problems in the literature. In particular we disprove a conjecture in \cite{CDI} on the regularity of weakly closed graphs.

Abstract:We study unmixed and Cohen-Macaulay properties of the binomial edge ideal of some classes of graphs. We compute the depth of the binomial edge ideal of a generalized block graph. We also characterize all generalized block graphs whose binomial edge ideals are Cohen-Macaulay and unmixed. So that we generalize the results of Ene, Herzog and Hibi on block graphs. Moreover, we study unmixedness and Cohen-Macaulayness of the binomial edge ideal of some graph products such as the join and corona of two graphs with respect to the original graphs'.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a simple connected non-complete graph and $J_G$ be its binomial edge ideal in a polynomial ring $S$. Using certain invariants associated to graphs, say $U(G)$, Banerjee and Núñez-Betancourt gave an upper bound for the depth of $S/J_G$, and Rouzbahani Malayeri, Saeedi Madani and Kiani obtained a lower bound, say $L(G)$. Hibi and Saeedi Madani gave a structural classification of graphs satisfying $L(G)=U(G)$. In this article, we give structural classification of graphs satisfying $L(G)+1=U(G)$. We also compute the depth of $S/J_G$ for all such graphs $G$.

Abstract:International Journal of Algebra and Computation, Ahead of Print. In this paper, we study the powers of the generalized binomial edge ideal [math] of a path graph [math]. We explicitly compute their regularities and determine the limit of their depths. We also show that these ordinary powers coincide with their symbolic powers. Additionally, we study the Rees algebra and the special fiber ring of [math] utilizing Sagbi basis theory. In particular, we obtain precise formulas for the regularity of these blowup algebras.

Abstract:Conca and Varbaro (Invent. Math. 221 (2020), no. 3) showed the equality of depth of a graded ideal and its initial ideal in a polynomial ring when the initial ideal is square-free. In this paper, we give some beautiful applications of this fact in the study of Cohen-Macaulay binomial edge ideals. We prove that for the characterization of Cohen-Macaulay binomial edge ideals, it is enough to consider only "biconnected graphs with some whisker attached" and this done by investigating the initial ideals. We give several necessary conditions for a binomial edge ideal to be Cohen-Macaulay in terms of smaller graphs. Also, under a hypothesis, we give a sufficient condition for Cohen-Macaulayness of binomial edge ideals in terms of blocks of graphs. Moreover, we show that a graph with Cohen-Macaulay binomial edge ideal has girth less than $5$ or equal to infinity.

Abstract:In this paper we introduce the concept of clique disjoint edge sets in graphs. Then, for a graph $G$, we define the invariant $\eta(G)$ as the maximum size of a clique disjoint edge set in $G$. We show that the regularity of the binomial edge ideal of $G$ is bounded above by $\eta(G)$. This, in particular, settles a conjecture on the regularity of binomial edge ideals in full generality.

Abstract:In this paper we prove the conjectured upper bound for Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of binomial edge ideals posed in [23], in the case of chordal graphs. Indeed, we show that the regularity of any chordal graph G is bounded above by the number of maximal cliques of G, denoted by c(G). Moreover, we classify all chordal graphs G for which L(G) = c(G), where L(G) is the sum of the lengths of longest induced paths of connected components of G. We call such graphs strongly interval graphs. Moreover, we show that the regularity of a strongly interval graph G coincides with L(G) as well as c(G).

Abstract:Let $G$ be a connected and simple graph on the vertex set $[n]$. To the graph $G$ one can associate the generalized binomial edge ideal $J_{m}(G)$ in the polynomial ring $R=K[x_{ij}: i \in [m], j \in [n]]$. We provide a lower bound for the cohomological dimension of $J_{m}(G)$. We also study when $J_{m}(G)$ is a cohomologically complete intersection. Finally, we show that the arithmetical rank of $J_{2}(G)$ equals the projective dimension of $R/J_{2}(G)$ in several cases.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a simple graph with binomial edge ideal $J_G$. We prove how to calculate the multidegree of $J_G$ based on combinatorial properties of $G$. In particular, we study the set $S_{\min}(G)$ defined as the collection of subsets of vertices whose prime ideals have minimum codimension. We provide results which assist in determining $S_{\min}(G)$, then calculate $S_{\min}(G)$ for star, horned complete, barbell, cycle, wheel, and friendship graphs, and use the main result of the paper to obtain the multidegrees of their binomial edge ideals.

On the $\mathrm{v}$-number of binomial edge ideals of some classes of graphs

Abstract:Let $G$ be a finite simple graph, and $J_G$ denote the binomial edge ideal of $G$. In this article, we first compute the $\mathrm{v}$-number of binomial edge ideals corresponding to Cohen-Macaulay closed graphs. As a consequence, we obtain the $\mathrm{v}$-number for paths. For cycle and binary tree graphs, we obtain a sharp upper bound for $\mathrm{v}(J_G)$ using the number of vertices of the graph. We characterize all connected graphs $G$ with $\mathrm{v}(J_G) = 2$. We show that for a given pair $(k,m), k\leq m$, there exists a graph $G$ with an associated monomial edge ideal $I$ having $\mathrm{v}$-number equal to $k$ and regularity $m$. If $2k \leq m$, then there exists a binomial edge ideal with $\mathrm{v}$-number $k$ and regularity $m$. Finally, we compute $\mathrm{v}$-number of powers of binomial edge ideals with linear resolution, thus proving a conjecture on the $\mathrm{v}$-number of powers of a graded ideal having linear powers, for the class of binomial edge ideals.

Abstract:We characterize all graphs whose binomial edge ideals have pure resolutions. Moreover, we introduce a new switching of graphs which does not change some algebraic invariants of graphs, and using this, we study the linear strand of the binomial edge ideals for some classes of graphs. Also, we pose a conjecture on the linear strand of such ideals for every graph.

Abstract:Edge ideals of finite simple graphs are well-studied over polynomial rings. In this paper, we initiate the study of edge ideals over exterior algebras, specifically focusing on the depth and singular varieties of such ideals. We prove an upper bound on the depth of the edge ideal associated to a general graph and a more refined bound for bipartite graphs, and we show that both are tight. We also compute the depth of several large families of graphs including cycles, complete multipartite graphs, spider graphs, and Ferrers graphs. Finally, we focus on the effect whiskering a graph has on the depth of the associated edge ideal.

Abstract:Some recent investigations indicate that for the classification of Cohen-Macaulay binomial edge ideals, it suffices to consider biconnected graphs with some whiskers attached (in short, `block with whiskers'). This paper provides explicit combinatorial formulae for the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of two specific classes of Cohen-Macaulay binomial edge ideals: (i) chain of cycles with whiskers and (ii) $r$-regular $r$-connected block with whiskers. For the first type, we introduce a new invariant of graphs in terms of the number of blocks in certain induced block graphs, and this invariant may help determine the regularity of other classes of binomial edge ideals. For the second type, we present the formula as a linear function of $r$.

Combinatorics of Castelnuovo-Mumford Regularity of Binomial Edge Ideals

Abstract:Since the introduction of binomial edge ideals $J_{G}$ by Herzog et al. and independently Ohtani, there has been significant interest in relating algebraic invariants of the binomial edge ideal with combinatorial invariants of the underlying graph $G$. Here, we take up a question considered by Herzog and Rinaldo regarding Castelnuovo--Mumford regularity of block graphs. To this end, we introduce a new invariant $\nu(G)$ associated to any simple graph $G$, defined as the size of a particularly nice induced maximal matching of $\text{in}_{\text{lex}}(J_{G})$. We investigate the question of expressing $\nu(G)$ in terms of the combinatorics of $G$. We prove that $\nu(G)$ is the maximal total length of a certain collection of induced paths within $G$. We prove that for any graph $G$, $\nu(G) \leq \text{reg}(J_{G})-1$, and that the length of a longest induced path of $G$ is less than or equal to $\nu(G)$; this refines an inequality of Matsuda and Murai. We then investigate the question: when is $\nu(G) = \text{reg}(J_{G})-1$? We prove that equality holds when $G$ is closed; this gives a new characterization of a result of Ene and Zarojanu, and when $G$ is bipartite and $J_{G}$ is Cohen-Macaulay; this gives a new characterization of a result of Jayanathan and Kumar. For a block graph $G$ we prove that $\nu(G)$ admits a combinatorial characterization independent of any auxiliary choices, and we prove that $\nu(G) = \text{reg}(J_{G})-1$. This gives $\text{reg}(J_{G})$ a combinatorial interpretation for block graphs, and thus answers the question of Herzog and Rinaldo.
